Throughout 2011, HPNA celebrated its 25th anniversary. The first major event was the Anniversary Dinner at the Annual Assembly in Vancouver, BC, Canada. In tandem with this event, HPNA hosted a history room with memorabilia covering its 25-year history. At the Plenary Event to highlight HPNA, the first 16 presidents of the Board of Directors of HPNA were honored. The celebrating continued to the Leadership Development weekend, where local leaders had the opportunity to learn more about HPNA’s history and was woven into our 5th Clinical Practice Forum held in Pittsburgh, PA. And finally, the Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing launched a new cover to honor the anniversary year and published a supplement to highlight the history of palliative nursing over the past 25 years.

2011 was a very successful year. This report highlights the major achievements of HPNA in

2011 under the leadership of Todd Hultman and the HPNA Board of Directors in collaboration with the CEO and National Office Staff. This summation will be presented during the Annual Membership Meeting next week during the AAHPM/HPNA Annual Assembly at the time noted above.

In 2011 we recognized nearly 350 HPNA member individuals who volunteered their services as

committee leaders and members, chapter leaders, teleconference presenters, authors, newsletter writers, reviewers, etc.

The HPNA Board of Directors completed a yearlong process for creating the 2012-2015 Strategic Plan guided by our mission statement, feedback from the membership survey, focus

groups at Leadership Weekend, the 6 Standing Association Committees as well as the 5 Board committees.

In focusing on the pillars of our mission, the following activities are highlighted:

Leadership Development

• Continued active participation in the National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care

• Approved 4 chapters for a new total of 50 Chapters and 23 provisional groups � Middle Tennessee Chapter (Nashville Area)

� North Alabama

� Southeast Atlantic (Savannah, GA)

� Florence, South Carolina

• Held conjoint board meeting with the Board of Directors of ONS which will lead to future coordination of efforts on behalf of nursing

• As an affiliate member of ANA representatives sent to provide HPNA’s voice in multiple areas

• HPNA Board President chaired the Alliance for Excellence in Hospice and Palliative

Nursing Board of Trustees and the 2011 Alliance Summit

Education Resources

• Approved revisions for 9 existing position statements: “Legalization of Assisted

Suicide”, “Artificial Nutrition and Hydration in Advanced Illness”, “Complementary Therapies in Palliative Care Nursing Practice”, “Palliative Sedation”, “Role of Palliative Care Nursing in Organ and Tissue Donation”, “Shortage of Registered Nurses”, “Value of

the Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse in Palliative Care”, “Value of Professional Nurse in Palliative Care”, and “Withholding and/or Withdrawing Life Sustaining Treatments”

• Approved 3 new position statements: “Role of Nurse When Hastened Death is

Requested”, “Reporting and Management of Medication Errors in the Home”, and “Role of Nurses When Hastened Death is Requested”

• Held the 5th Clinical Practice Forum: Integrating Cancer and Palliative Care across the

Lifespan with record attendance • Board leadership participated in the Alliance Summit that focused on messaging to the

Public • Provided E-Learning webinars for more than 1400 participants

• Provided 50 CE requests • Approved 921 Approved Educators, which is the most ever

• Expanded on Teaching Sheets expanded to include sheets in English, Spanish and

Mandarin Chinese which receive more than 10,000 hits on the website

• Completed two new educational products and revised four others • HPNA held 6 ‘Live Chats’ in 2011, welcoming members to participate in discussion on a

variety of topics • Social media efforts have yielded great results with more than 1200 members following

HPNA on Facebook and nearly 900 on Twitter

• Membership levels reached an all time high with over 10,557 • JHPN generated an increased number of manuscripts necessitating increasing the

number of issues from 6 to 8 beginning in 2012. The journal year ended with a special edition focusing on our 25 year history in education, certification, research, practice, and public policy.

Research Support

• Completed the compilation and approval of the 2012-2015 Research Agenda

• 4 participants were selected to participate in the Kathleen Foley Palliative Care Retreat and Research Symposium

• Established the recommendations for the research strategic plan for 2012-2015

Again this year we are enjoying another successful Annual Assembly with nearly 2500

attendees. At this time, I would like to acknowledge the work of Connie Dahlin and Barbara Head. Connie co-led the Planning Committee for this event during the past year and will again serve as co-chair for the 2013 conference. Barb co-led the scientific committee this past year. Connie has shared how wonderful this experience has been – it is a truly collaborative

relationship with AAHPM. The expertise provided by these individuals is outstanding and makes us very proud. We thank Connie and Barb for the wonderful work they have done to make the AAHPM/HPNA Annual Assembly the best conference ever.

Nancy Tropeck, National Office Staff The Chapters Committee supports the mission and growth of HPNA through the development and growth of integrated chapters. During the period July, 2010 through July, 2011 the

Chapters Committee: • Recommended renewal of charter for 39 chartered Chapters • Recommended award of charter to 11 Provisional Groups

• Coordinated and conducted HPNA’s 9th Annual Leadership Weekend for 76 Chapter and Provisional Group leaders in Pittsburgh, PA

• Provided support and mentoring to 23 Provisional Groups and numerous HPNA members, who inquired about forming a new Group in their local area

• Worked collaboratively with the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) to hold inaugural joint networking session for Chapter and Group leaders during the Annual Leadership Weekend event.

• Created an HPNA 25th Anniversary Video and Memory Book, which launched at the 2011 AAHPM/HPNA Annual Assembly in Vancouver, BC, Canada and contained testimonials from local Chapter leaders

• Reviewed and updated the Chapter Manual and Chapter Treasurer’s Manual

• Designed and launched an HPNA Chapter Awards Program, which includes the following awards: Chapter Excellence, Communication Award, and Recruitment and Retention Award.

• Created HPNA’s 8th Chapter District and reorganized its current District boundaries,

enabling Chapters and Groups to develop a close relationship with an experienced District Leader in its dedicated geographic area

• Created a “Chapter Template Library” online, which includes customizable

Chapter/Provisional Group related documents and materials • Created a FREE online course for Chapter members related to the new online election

process • Conducted 3 Chapter specific meetings during the 2011 AAHPM/HPNA Annual Assembly

in Vancouver, BC, Canada

• Further developed the “Critical Analysis of Chapters” tool to help District Leaders

identify potential areas of improvement for local Chapters

The Membership Committee is responsible for the overall promotion of membership and membership activities (recruitment and retention) and reports to the Planning and Resources Committee of the HPNA Board of Directors. In 2011 the Membership Committee:

Reviewed/discussed 2011 membership retention goal and membership growth goal on a monthly basis. Strategies implemented include revision of Welcome email and increased electronic contact with new members.

• Reviewed current HPNA membership fees in comparison to those of other nursing

associations of similar size. • Forwarded recommendations regarding 2012 membership dues increase to the

Planning and Resources Committee.

• Developed and implemented the full HPNA Membership Survey which is completed every three years.

• Reviewed the results of the full HPNA Membership Survey including all comments related specifically to membership satisfaction and renewal.

• Reviewed counts of those accessing Members Only area of HPNA website and discussed Members Only content.

• Committee Chair participated in the 2011 Leadership Weekend.

• Committee provided input to the HPNA Board of Directors Strategic Planning.

relevant to hospice and palliative care, provides feedback, and makes recommendations regarding actions plans to the Planning and Resource Committee. In 2011, the Public Policy Committee:

• Followed federal legislation based on the guiding principles approved by the HPNA Board of Directors

• Collaborated with multiple healthcare organizations, including NHPCO, AAHPM, CAPC, and ANA, in the dissemination of policy advocacy efforts and successes

• Secured Congressional testimony on behalf of Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy

celebrating HPNA’s 25th Anniversary • Supported 2 HPNA members to attend the Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) training

held in Washington D.C. • Reviewed and further developed the HPNA Legislative Assistant, a monthly e-newsletter

dedicated to informing members of current legislative and policy priorities

• Organized a Preconference Workshop for the 2011 AAHPM/HPNA Annual Assembly, titled “Climbing Up Capitol Hill and Loving It: Influencing Health Care through Legislation and

Advocacy”. • Reviewed and updated the ‘Get Involved in Advocacy‘ pages of the HPNA website. • Provided oversight and guidance to the HPNA State Ambassador Program, which allows

HPNA members to assist with policy/advocacy efforts as directed by the Board of Directors

and Public Policy Committee on the national and state levels. This program grew to 35 actives members in 2011.

• Developed ‘1 Pager’ template to be used by Bryan Cave, LLP, during its legislative visits on behalf of HPNA. This ‘1 Pager’ provides topic points, vital statistics, and ‘An Ask’ from

HPNA related to a specific topics. • Presented free online chat events, including guest presenters from the Public Policy

Committee

• Recommended nominations for the 2011 “Friend of HPNA Award” • Initiated the development of a free Advocacy Training online course for the members of

HPNA, which is to be released in early 2012 • Planned an advocacy training event for local Chapter/Group leaders, which was held during

the 2011 HPNA Leadership Weekend. • Conducted and published a formal interview series with Congressional leaders, which will

be posted in 2012 HPNA members publications.

• Further developed relationships with Congressional leaders by numerous member-level meetings on Capitol Hill.

• Communicated legislative and advocacy information, updates, and alerts through the HPNA

e-newsletter, Public Policy Special Interest Group, State Ambassador Program, HPNA Website, and HPNA LISTSERV

The Research Committee is responsible for guiding HPNA's support of palliative care research as defined by the Strategic Plan.

During 2011, the Committee accomplished the following

• Developed the 2012-2015 HPNA Research Agenda with input from a survey of HPNA

members. • Augmented the Research Scholars Program with an opportunity for past Scholars to

apply to return to the Kathleen Foley Research Retreat if space is available after accepting well-qualified new applicants. Four HPNA members (including one repeat

scholar) attended the 2011 Retreat and reported enthusiastically about the benefit of the networking experience.

• Collaborated with AAHPM to offer research consultations at the 2011 Annual Assembly,

an opportunity for members to meet with a senior research to discuss issues regarding the submission of competitive abstracts, manuscripts and grant applications.

• Made recommendations to the Board regarding the HPNA New Investigator and Distinguished Investigator Awards.

• Worked with the HPNA Policy Committee to issue a Call to Action soliciting comments for the proposed strategic plan for the National Institute of Nursing Research.

• Evaluated the review results for abstracts submitted by HPNA members for the 2012 Annual Assembly and made recommendations for a top abstract award. Judged posters

presented at the 2011 Annual Assembly and recommended two top poster awards. • Collaborated with the AAHPM Research SIG to develop a symposium for the 2012

Annual Assembly • Developed recommendations related to research for the HPNA Board’s strategic

planning process
