BT young gun Andrew Prichard has won the prestigious ALUCA TurksLegal Scholarship which awards the winner with an overseas package valued up to $8,000 including return travel, accommodation, $1,000 cash and registration at a major insurance conference in the United States in 2012. Runners up –Tower’s Ray Young Goh and Comminsure’s Tim Hulme – received a $1,000 Red Ballon gift certificate and a $250 restaurant voucher respectively. “For a dynamic industry like the life insurance sector, quality professional development and top- notch skills are crucial if underwriters and claims professionals are to stay on top of their game”, said TurksLegal’s partner Alph Edwards. Now in its fifth year, the scholarship provides a forum for life insurance claims professionals who are also ALUCA members, to contribute their ideas on cutting edge issues affecting the industry’s future. “We were delighted to support this scholarship because it promotes excellence on so many levels – from the sharing of best practices and great ideas across the life insurance industry, to encouraging high achievers to broaden their professional horizons,” said ALUCA president, Tracey Peters. Testament to the value of the scholarship, last year’s winner, Comminsure’s Vanessa Back says “Attending the Eastern Claims Conference at the Waldorf Astoria in New York was a once in a life time opportunity, giving me the opportunity to compare and contrast claims management best practice from around the world.” Entrants in the 2011 Australian Life Underwriters and Claims Association (ALUCA) TurksLegal Scholarship had to submit a 2,500 word paper addressing one of six questions drawn from topic areas as diverse as the Getting ready for tomorrow – accelerating the claims process to Closing the underinsurance gap. Essays were assessed on a number of criteria including understanding of the topic, clarity, commercial insight research, conclusions and presentation. The judging panel comprised industry figures including ANZIIF CEO Joan Fitzpatrick; Tower Australia’s managing director Jim Minto, ALUCA president Tracey Peters, ClearView managing director Simon Swanson and head of life insurance at BT Financial Group Phil Hay as well as TurksLegal partners Alph Edwards, John Myatt and Lisa Norris.
