September Program:
Residential Landscape Design We all want gorgeous gardens that appeal to
both friends and wildlife. Yet, gardening in North
Central Texas certainly has its challenges: hot,
humid summers, drought conditions, clay
soil, occasional flooding, periodic hard freezes,
etc. Steve Huddleston, Senior Horticulturist for the
Fort Worth Botanic Garden, co-author of Easy
Gardens for North Central Texas, and president of
his own landscaping company, will share his ideas
for creating successful residential landscape
designs.
Steve will have copies of his book for sale in
the lobby before and after the meeting. Payment is
BY CHECK ONLY, made payable to Blooming
Concepts, Inc. The price is $41.08 which includes
tax and autograph.

President’s Message
The executive committee has been hard at work this summer planning
programs, workshops, trips, the fall plant sale, and Butterfly Flutterby. They have
created a calendar filled with activities designed to increase our gardening
knowledge, benefit our community, and provide opportunities for us to step out of
Grapevine and experience gardens in other parts of our state and beyond.
To our newest members, please plan to attend the New Member Coffee on
September 28th. This event is open to members who have joined the club since
January 2017, and showcases the various positions and committees that keep our
club running at full speed. Additional information can be found in this newsletter.
I’ll close by saying to all of you – enjoy your garden club membership! Attend
the monthly meetings, participate in our workshops, and sign up for tours, all of
which will expand your knowledge of gardening while you’re making new friends.
Happy 85th Year!
Candace Kyler
Fall is almost here! Although it’s been a mild
summer by north Texas standards, I’m sure we’re
all ready for cooler weather and the return of our
Grapevine Garden Club routine.
And please volunteer. Whatever your particular
interests, you will find a wealth of volunteer opportunities
available to you as a GGC member. And you’ll be
supporting our community, our future gardeners, and our
growing organization in the process!
This fall we will begin reflecting on the past 85
years as we celebrate the inception of our garden club
in 1932. Look for a history lesson in each month’s
newsletter as we remember the people who founded
and built our club. I want to be the first to thank Joetta
King for sharing her knowledge in such an
entertaining manner!

Introducing….Kristi Hayward
Kristi changed course in her late 30s, however, and enrolled at Texas A&M,
majoring in horticulture with a specialization in fruits and vegetables. She helped
finance her degree – and gained valuable experience – by working in the TAMU
greenhouses while in college.
Following graduation, Kristi accepted a position at the University of Texas in
Austin, where she worked in food purchasing for the University’s dorm cafeterias
and other food outlets on campus. One of her proudest achievements during her
two years at UT was the establishment of a farm stand on campus.
Kristi is busy planning educational programs for children to tie in with several
upcoming events at the GBG – Fossil Fest and Jurassic Garden in September and,
of course, Butterfly Flutterby in October! She also plans to offer several classes for
adults, including plant propagation. AND she would like to add a culinary garden
at the GBG to teach children and adults how to grow their own veggies. All those
hours spent in Grandma’s vegetable garden really paid off!
Kristi Hayward
On June 12th, the Grapevine Botanical
Gardens welcomed Kristi Hayward as their
Horticulturist. I met with Kristi over the summer
and wanted to share some of the highlights of her
career and her future plans for the GBG.
Like so many of us, Kristi’s earliest memories
of gardening involve working with her
grandmother in the vegetable garden. Kristi’s
family was in the restaurant business and so she
began her career working in restaurants in
various management positions. Eventually her
career path even included culinary school.
Pete and Jack
In her spare time, Kristi enjoys watching sports
of all kinds, especially Texas A&M football and
Atlanta Braves baseball (she was born in Atlanta
and spent her early childhood there). She also
enjoys hanging out with her very cute “furbabies” –
Pete the Papillon and Jack, the marble Bengal cat.

Rose Trial Update
The goal of the Rose Trial is to find rose varieties that are resistant to Rose
Rosette disease (“RRD”). The 19 varieties that were planted two years ago were
considered to be potentially resistant by scientists and growers. At the September
data collection, we found three new roses that have contracted RRD.
So far nine of our 72 roses have contracted RRD. They are Wedding Bells,
Miracle on the Hudson, Betty Prior (2), Miranda Lambert (2), and Hot Cocoa.
They have been reported to the Texas AgriLife Extension and in some cases
samples have been sent. Many thanks to Laura Miller of the Extension for her
technical assistance.
Everyone is welcome to help with the next data collection on Tuesday, October
3rd at 9:00 A.M. at the intersection of Dove Loop & Shadybrook, next to Cross
Timbers Winery.

hosting a May luncheon and executive committee meeting at her home, serving on
the spring luncheon committee for numerous years, participating in Gardens on

The GGC Executive Committee recommends that Lou Milner receive
honorary life membership in the Grapevine Garden Club. This recommendation
will be presented at the September general meeting and may be approved by a
majority vote of the voting members present.
(See Bylaws 4.01 for definition of honorary life membership)
By now our scholarship recipients (Chris Wermuth, Ashton
Bisballe, Joanna Lambert, and Amy Lambert) have begun
their studies at their respective colleges and their bursars have
received their scholarship monies from our GGC. At the June
Board Meeting, the Board reviewed and accepted by vote the
motion to raise the scholarship amount from $2,500 to
$3,000. The scholarship amount was last raised in 2015 from
$2,000 to $2,500.

ways that can’t be documented but remain in our memories.
With Wayne’s passing, Lou’s enthusiasm for hands-on home gardening projects

Despite these changes, she continued to serve faithfully as e-mail chair for many
years.

GGC “Adopts-An-Area” of Wall-Farrar Trail The GGC Wall-Farrar Trail Tidy-up is part of a larger program to pick up litter
and/or improve adopted sites. According to Cindy Harris, GGC member and
Grapevine PARD Volunteer Services Liaison, Grapevine currently has over 80
areas that have been adopted by individuals or groups. This program is facilitated
by Keep Grapevine Beautiful (“KGVB”), an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful and
Keep America Beautiful. Both organizations require annual reporting and program
participation from KGVB in order to maintain affiliation status.
Please join us for our next “Tidy-up the Trail” event on Monday, September

Gardens on View Come tour two gardens in south Grapevine after our September general
meeting. Fall vegetables and herbs will be available for purchase at the Bruns
home (see article in this newsletter for additional information). Checks or cash
only, please!
The Bruns Garden
The garden of Tina and Rick Bruns is home to 15 “free
range” box turtles! The backyard landscape of perennials
and paths was designed by Blooming Colors five years ago
and, according to Tina, they removed six large trees and
recently topped two 30-year-old Bradford Pears.
In the nine years they have lived in
their home, Tina and Rick have had
to adjust to both shade and sun – and
are now somewhere in between. Tina
says it’s the perfect garden for anyone
who loves to prune. She welcomes any
suggestions from GGC gardeners on
the tour, especially in the area near the
shed!

The King Garden
As we all know, there is a learning curve in any landscape and according to
Joetta, you may not see “thrivers” but you can definitely view survivors in sun,
shade, and sandy soil. The paths and patios are brimming with a wide variety of
plants, and Joetta says that while not every single plant has an ID tag, somewhere
in the garden each plant species is labeled. She and Ed invite you to bring a
brown-bag lunch and linger with friends!
Please watch for an e-mail with a brief survey about Gardens on View
(only three questions!). And please contact Tina Bruns if you’d like YOUR garden
to be on the tour in October, March, or April.

Gardens on View
Remembering Adele Claeson (9/2/56 – 8/23/17) I met Adele several years ago when I was designing a landscape for a client of
mine in Adele’s neighborhood. My client said, “You’ve just got to see my
neighbor’s yard!” So we walked down the street to meet Adele and tour her
beautiful shady garden in Grapevine. We were instant kindred gardening spirits.
Adele’s garden was featured on the Colleyville
Promenade Garden Tour in May, 2013 and the Southern
Regional Master Gardener Tour in November, 2016. She
became a Tarrant County Master Gardener in 2014 and later
served as a mentor for interns. She was voted “Intern of the
Year” among her 2014 Master Gardener Intern class. Adele
joined the Grapevine Garden Club in 2014. She put her love
of gardening and knack for landscape design to work as a
garden designer for Grow It Land Designs, a garden center
in Coppell.

Happy 85th Birthday, GGC, Part 1 Life in our area has definitely changed in the 85 years since the club was
organized. In 1932 there were 230 homes in Grapevine and the population was
about 936. Today Grapevine’s population is approximately 49,479 and the number
of housing units is over 16,000.
Who were the original members of The Grapevine Garden Club of Grapevine,
Texas and how are the members and organization different today? Well, for one
thing the name was changed to The Grapevine Garden Club, Inc. And although
most of us think individual dues of $25.00 a year are a bargain, the original yearly
dues of 50¢ were apparently too pricey because in 1933 the dues were reduced to
25¢ and remained that amount until 1943!
Membership consisted of both men and women in 1932, but social mores have
changed in how women are addressed in yearbooks, minutes, and newspaper
articles. In the early years, a married woman was always referred to by her
husband’s name (e.g., Mrs. Edward King). It wasn’t until 1972 that women were
listed in the yearbook for the first time under their married names with their given
names in parenthesis – Mrs. Edward King (Joetta). Finally in 1985-86 yearbooks
began listing female members and officers by their given names with their
spouses’ names appearing in parenthesis – Joetta King (Edward). And in the
current yearbook, each member is listed individually.

The professions of the charter members are not strikingly different from today –
teachers, librarians, postmaster, banker, farmers, merchants, and homemakers. Our
current members include architects, engineers, accountants, teachers, school
principals, librarians, landscape architects, interior decorators, doctors, and
homemakers. And we definitely have more retirees as members!
Today’s lifestyle is certainly different. As far as I know, we don’t have a
current member associated with the U.S. Postal Service, however in 1932, a
speaker at the organizational meeting, George Ellison (“Ell”) Hurst, carried the
mail on a route out of Grapevine to the Flower Mound area. He delivered mail by
horse and buggy in good weather, and by horseback when the roads were too
muddy. His daughter recalls, “I remember when we first got a phone. People would
call early in the morning and ask him to pick up a prescription and bring it to them
when he delivered the mail.” Current member Chuck Voelker provides a similar
service today by volunteering through the REC to assist aging residents with
transportation to doctor appointments and pharmacy shopping.
The current Grapevine librarian undoubtedly earns more than Eunice Davis,
GGC president in 1932, who served as librarian from 1932 to the 1940s, and
earned a whopping $8.00 a month. Of course, her job was enriched by the thrill of
having the library located at the front of the fire station!

I can’t think of a current member to compare to John and Bessie Brock. The
Brocks had twelve children and farmed, raised cattle, kept milk cows, planted
sugar cane and made sorghum molasses, butchered hogs in the winter, shelled and
milled corn at the gristmill on the stream, and did custom threshing for other
farmers! However, there IS an interesting connection between the Brocks and
today’s GGC. Based on research by Sally Andrews, Historical Preservation, it
seems that when GGC members are working at the Rose Trial garden, they are
walking on the 44.5 acre Brock farmland. The Brock home is now the Cross
Timbers Winery.
The club was organized by men and women who were fiercely interested in
beautification of their community and had a passion for growing plants. That is
still true today!
