A Letter from the President

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I missed the final month of last school year, including the Class of 2012’s graduation mass. It was because I was in Rome as a delegate to the brothers’ 35th General Chapter, an assembly that is our highest authority after the Holy Father. Every six years Brothers from around the world gather to elect our international leaders and set goals for our mission.

As exciting as it was to participate in an event like that, I felt very torn about missing the crowning harvest of what we’d been sowing and watering at SSC all year. However, after a bit of time in Rome, I was consoled to discover a link between the Chapter’s broad world view and my daily responsibilities at SSC. One of the two major goals of our deliberations in Rome turned out to be giving “a common formation to brothers and our partners in mission.”

The more we brothers reflected in the international setting about our partners in mission, the more enthusiastic I became about the women and men who were getting the job done at home while I was away. Seen in the context of our hundreds of other establishments in thirty countries, the dedicated commitment of our SSC team of brothers and lay partners is truly remarkable. I would like to reflect on it here to express my gratitude and hope as well as to impress on you how lucky we are.

SSC asks more of its staff than most schools – because it is open 24-hours seven days a week; because our campus is so vast and varied; because class sizes are small, requiring many different preparations; because giving close personal attention is in our blood; because the ability range of our students is very broad; because we strive to build a community among ourselves and a sanctuary around our boys. Our partners in mission respond with generosity the likes of which I have rarely seen.

Our administrative team and department directors take personal ownership of SSC’s mission and care for its campus with a sense of responsibility equal to that of the brothers. They make efforts to form themselves to live the brothers’ founding charism and to adapt it to changing times in dynamic ways. They join formation programs and events at the province level, they advance their professional competencies, they show spiritual leadership among students and faculty, and they accept challenges with energy.

The hardest thing for me when I was away from campus was fear that I was abandoning Patrick McGrath for a month during his first year as principal. The fear was unfounded. By all accounts, the year was extremely successful, and even outstanding. Patrick has put together a strong faculty and works effectively with it. I am proud of the leadership he has shown not only at SSC, but among the principals of the other brothers’ schools.

If I had to single out one thing in this annual report to define the 2011-2012 school year, it would be the spirit of partnership in mission between SSC’s lay faculty and brothers, a spirit exemplified in a particularly gracious way at the level of leadership by Patrick McGrath and the administrative team. I give thanks for the spirit of unity it has created as well as for the numerous signs recounted in this annual report of its effectiveness and leadership.

A Letter from the Principal

Dear Alumni,

The Brothers of the Sacred Heart’s Rule of Life begins with its founding goal: “To rescue young people from ignorance, to prepare them for life, and to give them a knowledge and love of religion.” Over the course of my seven years at St. Stanislaus I have grown in my understanding of the challenges of this mission and how successful our school has been in accomplishing it. Through all of my responsibilities, whether as teacher, coach, assistant principal or principal, I have been blessed to witness the mission flourish through our rich tradition and lasting legacy, as well as through the successes of our current students and community. My experiences at St. Stanislaus have led me to a deeper appreciation and a passion for the same charism that excited the Brothers’ founder, Father André Coindre to act with compassion nearly 200 years ago. Since the beginning, our charism has been at the heart of this compassion and it is now through

this lens that I view all that we do here at SSC. This charism, the extraordinary grace freely given to us by God to meet the needs of our boys, is consistently revealed in our daily interactions at school. As I consistently witness the patience and kindness of our faculty, staff and community members, I distinctly see our compassionate God revealing himself through the charism. I see it alive every day in the struggling students who find sanctuary at SSC, in the dedicated staff members who have accepted our mission and embody its spirit, in the remarkable Brothers who have a hand in every part of our campus from the President’s Office to our athletic fields. Yet, the charism is incomplete in mentioning only these people – the unique nature of the charism endows every member of our community with a role in ministering to our young men. Indeed, I have been humbled and encouraged by the generosity of so many different people in so many different ways – in each of our various board members who lend time and expertise in guiding SSC in important decisions, in the incredible work that our parent-volunteers do, and in the extended SSC family that keeps us going through donations. Because these are also critical to our mission, our success depends this collaborative spirit as we respond in our own way to the same call that Father Coindre heard in a distant country in a time far removed from ours. God’s invitation to participate in the charism can be a weighty responsibility, however, when we consider the sacredness of his gift. The Brothers’ charism is a gift both to those of us who receive it, because we are challenged to be servants to others and models of Jesus, and to those who are in need. Yet it only asks of us according to what we are able to offer – whether that is in a lifetime commitment or only the occasional involvement. The beautiful implication is that of the mutual relationship between us and God – He offers us the inspiration and vision while we seek to make these tangible by offering back the individual gifts God has given us. To one degree or another, every young man who has spent time at St. Stanislaus has encountered this charism. As a lay leader, I am often reminded of the sacred duty of ensuring the survival and continuation of our legacy accomplished through this gift. I am grateful that God continues to flow through the charism, charging it with vitality and revealing it not as a relic that we archive, but as a beating heart of love.

Both the joy and the burden of this realization is that God remains infused in all the good that we do. It also means that we must constantly be attentive to what He is calling us to do. God continues to urge us forward, to reveal to us our students’ needs and to guide us in our response to them, as much today as He did in 1854. So as we recall with pride what we have all accomplished this past year, I thank God and I thank you for joining us in living out the charism of the Brothers of Sacred Heart. I pray that we may continue to serve it faithfully in the years to come, with your help.

In His heart,

Patrick DeMetz McGrath Principal

During this past year, the Great Wall of Rocks for Athletics honored two alumni and the 1993 tennis team for their accomplishments. Generations blended as Henry “Zeke” Bonura’27 and Vincent A. Moran’95 were honored for their individual achievements while the 1993 tennis team was applauded for its versatility on the court.

Bonura, who earned a total of eighteen varsity letters during his six years at SSC, excelled in football, basketball, and track and field. He was the national AAU champion in the javelin in 1925 at the ripe age of sixteen and remains the youngest male to win a national title in any event. Bonura’s winning distance of 213’ 10 ½” was a world record at the time and stood until 1930.

However, it was the baseball diamond where Bonura flourished. He played seven years in the major leagues with the White Sox, Washington Senators, New York Giants and the Chicago Cubs. He is a lifetime .307 hitter.

Vince Moran earned four letters in track and field, three in basketball and two in football while a student at SSC. He helped lead the Rocks to the Division 8-AAAA basketball title in 1995 but it was on the track where he found his greatest success.

He led SSC to three Division 8-AAAA titles in track and claimed the Class AAAA high jump state championship during his sophomore and senior years. He was the state runner-up his freshman and junior years. Moran became only the second Mississippi high schooler to clear seven-feet in the high jump his senior year. He was named to the All-State first team, the Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year in Mississippi and earned All-American honors. At the national indoor championships, Moran placed third. His seven foot jump remains a SSC school record.

The 1993 St. Stanislaus tennis team recorded a regular season record of eight wins and five losses. The squad was coached by Myron Labat, Sr. and was made up of Myron Labat Jr., Hector Hernandez, Kevin Watts, Eduardo Jimenez, Carlos Gonzales, Rodrigo Hernandez, Scott Pepperman, and Robbie Flink.

Coach Labat always talks about how the team “backed” into the Division 8-AAAA title during the season. However, he fondly recalls that he was blessed to have had the opportunity to coach this team. He described the team as “…extremely talented, well behaved and academically strong.” The boy’s doubles team of Myron Labat, Jr. and Hector Hernandez teamed up to claim the Class AAAA state title. It was the third consecutive year for the younger Labat to claim the doubles title.

St. Stanislaus College, the oldest existing establishment of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in America, boasts a long and colorful history dating back to 1854. Blessed with talented leaders and generous benefactors, St. Stanislaus grew from its humble beginnings into an educational institution of great renown on the Gulf Coast. But it was not an easy task. Major challenges overcome by Brothers, lay faculty, and their students include epidemics, Civil War, financial struggles, hurricanes, and fire.

Without the perseverance and dedication of instrumental individuals, St. Stanislaus would not be the school it is today. From its start in 1854, the history of SSC spans over a century and a half and includes over 7,000 alumni worldwide.

Membership in the Society of 1854 is offered to all those who share the commitment to continuing the mission of St. Stanislaus, and who, like those Brothers in 1854 and those who followed, affirm that commitment by means of a planned gift.

To become eligible for the Society membership, an individual simply informs the school in writing that St. Stanislaus has been included in his or her estate plans. The school also requires documentation of the planned gift, for example, a copy of the pertinent provisions of the individual’s will or trust, a copy of the life insurance policy which names the school as a beneficiary, or a letter from the individual’s attorney stating that he or she has, indeed, included St. Stanislaus in his or her estate plans. Upon receipt of such documentation, participants are enrolled in the Society of 1854.

Below are the members of The Society of 1854 whom we are proud to recognize for their generosity in making a planned gift to SSC.

If you have left St. Stanislaus in your will or estate plans, please contact the office of Advancement to inform them of your gift.

Dear Alumni and Friends,

In June I wrote a letter to the patrons of Rockin’ the Globe 2012 announcing the termination of RTG as an SSC fundraiser. I won’t repeat the reasons for that decision, but I do want to emphasize the gratitude I expressed in the letter for all those, particularly Jenny Nicaud and her family, who worked so hard and gave so much to making the party a success and a signature event promoting SSC on the Gulf Coast. As the facts on this page show, its edition of 2012 was particularly outstanding.

I do want to repeat one paragraph from the letter, the one which states my belief that, thanks to the patrons’ and guests’ support over eight years, Rockin’ the Globe has accomplished the mission its creators had in mind: “The first phase of the football field renovation nears completion. Our improved turf irrigation, new home bleachers, spacious concession stand and restrooms, press box, fencing, and first-class amenities would never have been possible without your help. Our hope is that your investment over the years will help make the booster club self-sustaining. The improvements promise to give it the facilities it needs to keep raising money in the years to come to insure the safety and success of Rock-a-Chaw athletes.”

I believe that the money raised by Rockin’ the Globe, together with other designated gifts, has not been spent, it’s been invested to generate annual funding for the athletic program. The booster club can now raise directly for itself the amounts that used to come from RTG. Since we inaugurated the new home side facilities August 24, the results of concession stand income, booster apparel sales, program sales, and rental of stadium chair-backs and suites have been very encouraging.

I am very grateful to all those whose names appear on the dedication plaque mounted near the new ticket booth and to all who have kept the RTG investment going by contributing generously in all of the new Rock-A-Chaw Stadium self-financing opportunities.

Let me sign off with a special word of thanks to Ronnie Artigues, Sr., whose vision and orchestration have been a grace

of support and an assurance of ongoing development in SSC athletic programs.

Your Brother,

Bro. Bernard Couvillion President

Since 1854, St. Stanislaus has benefited from the generous support of alumni, parents, past parents, grandparents,

friends, corporations and foundations. This guide has been prepared to inform current and potential donors of the school’s needs and the different opportunities available for giving. Behind every gift to St. Stanislaus is a unique story reflecting the interest, enthusiasm, and commitment of a donor.

St. Stanislaus is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that relies on private donations to meet the annual, capital and endowment needs of the school. At a time when there are so many requests for your charitable dollar, you may ask: Why St. Stanislaus? The answer is simply two-fold: St. Stanislaus is worthy of your investment because it is an investment in the formation and future of a child. Secondly, in a school with our unique mission, your gift to St. Stanislaus will truly make a difference.

ANNUAL FUNDOur Annual Fund Program is necessary to sustain the life of the school through enriched academic, campus ministry, and student programs, as well as to provide faculty and departmental support. Your investment on an annual basis through a St. Stanislaus Annual Fund contribution, at any level, will help raise necessary funds for important school objectives.

Recruit and retain outstanding, experienced faculty Improve the academic programs and student activities Increase professional development of faculty Provide financial assistance for students Enhance spiritual formation opportunities for students Improve technology on campus

ENDOWMENT FUNDSEndowed scholarship funds and endowed academic funds are often established to commemorate a deceased loved one or to honor a living person or family. These funds provide a lasting tribute to those who are so honored. The principal of the donation remains secure while a portion of the annual interest income provides tuition assistance for deserving SSC students and additional funding for teachers salaries and academic programs. The based funding requirement for a named endowment fund at SSC is $50,000, and this may be paid over a period of years.

MEMORIAL AND HONORARY GIFTSYour investment in SSC is contributed in memory or honor of loved ones, other individuals, or groups. These gifts are designated to the Memorial and Honorary Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to qualified students.

DESIGNATED GIFTSContributions can be restricted for a specific purpose and applied to benefit a named department, extracurricular activity, or project as the donor specifies and the school approves.

CLASS GIFTSThis is an opportunity for graduates of the same class to come together to create an endowed scholarship or other designated gift in the name of their class.

MATCHING GIFTSMany companies offer an employee benefit of matching contributions to a non-profit organization. These company programs match a donation from you or your spouse and increase the impact of your gift to St. Stanislaus. Many times, companies also match gifts from retirees. To find out if your company matches gifts, contact your human resource department for the required form(s).

PLANNED GIFTS - THE SOCIETY OF 1854In order to continue the good works of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at St. Stanislaus, planned gifts help to perpetuate the mission of the school. There are many ways to give a planned gift to the school. Bequests, life insurance gifts, retirement plan designations, and charitable remainder trusts are just a few. If you have already named St. Stanislaus in your will, please notify the school’s Advancement Office so we may acknowledge your generosity.

If you are interested in learning more about giving opportunities at St. Stanislaus College, please contact Chris Mensi in the Advancement Office at 228-467-9057, ext. 255. Your gift sends a powerful message of loyalty and support and helps shape the future of St. Stanislaus College.

SSC had a budget shortfall in the 2011 fiscal year due mainly to a trend of declining enrollment of students in our feeder schools. Eighty-five seniors graduated in May 2011 and only fifty-two seventh graders entered to replace them.

Recruiting beyond our feeder schools is a priority and will be for years to come. We are initiating new contacts in non-traditional locations such as China and the northeastern U.S. while continuing to increase the number of day students as well as U.S. resident students.

The heart of the school is our faculty. Salaries and formation expenses increased by nearly $100,000.

Needed safety improvements and classroom upgrades were required throughout the year.

Unexpected expenditures in food costs and insurance premiums account for over $100,000 of the budget shortfall.

Even in the best years, tuition does not cover all expenses. This year, tuition alone accounted for sixty-seven percent of the actual per student cost. The gap between tuition and the cost per student was filled through the Annual Appeal, special gifts, and an operational grant from the SSC Progression Corporation. The Progression Board and School Administration are searching for clear sighted and prudent ways of eliminating the need to request large operational grants from the endowment.

The 2011 fiscal year was a positive year for fundraising at SSC. The Annual Fund exceeded its goal once again of $200,000 by raising $244,779.19.

Donations to the construction of the Football Stadium amounted to a significant portion of Designated Gifts.

Additionally, a $30,000 grant helped our Dyslexia program, a $50,000 technology donation improved the speed and security of our network and servers, and a $100,000 marine science donation created our first departmental endowment.

Separately, with the Camp Stanislaus Board of Directors, a campaign was organized to rebuild the Camp’s Ski Lodge. This raised $59,891.69, and with additional funds from Camp Stanislaus proceeds, the Brother Ramon Ski Lodge was completed in May 2012 and utilized as a hub of ski activity for the summer.

Revenue from twenty-two endowed scholarships contributed $195,942.00 to forty-five students whose families were in need of tuition assistance.

Market volatility resulted in a net loss of $161,633.27 between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012.

The 2012 SSC Fishing Tournament was a great success, but not without its struggles. Thunderstorms on the initial date of June 8th and 9th resulted in rescheduling the event to June 22nd and 23rd. The Pursuit of Happiness

Dear Friends,

At some point in time you have probably heard the phrase, “You can have all the money in the world, but you can’t buy happiness.” Well, I am here to tell you that it’s not true! Now before you run to pick up the phone and call Brother Bernard to tell him that his Advancement Director has lost it, allow me to share with you the logic behind disproving this adage.

A recent CNN article titled, Winning the lottery: Does it guarantee happiness? compared the lives before and after lottery winners hit it big. Most people think that their lives would be amazing and carefree after a jackpot, but it appears as though that’s not quite the case. According to the article, many of the apparent winners ended up worse off than before they cashed in their lucky ticket. Either they spent all their money and went into debt, or everyone who ever knew them found them and bugged them for money. They wound up with more debt and fewer friendships than before they won the lottery and, as a result, winners often felt selfish and became antisocial.

Harvard Professor Michael Norton saw this article and asked whether the lack of happiness was a result of people spending their money on the wrong things. He began a study in which individuals in two groups were given different amounts of money. One group was told that they had to spend it on something for themselves. The other group was told that they had to give their money away or be pro-social in spending it. They then asked the individuals what they spent their money on and how happy it made them feel. Some people paid bills, purchased clothing or coffee. Others gave it to the homeless, bought a gift for someone or even bought someone else a coffee. This study was conducted in several countries among different age groups and cultures. What they found was that those who spent their money on other people were in fact happier than those who spent it on themselves. Also, it was found that the level of happiness was not altered by the amount of money spent nor the exact purchase made. What really mattered in whether the individuals were happy or not, was the fact that the money was spent on another person.

The one thing that the study did not look into, however, was how pro-social spending affected the recipients’ level of happiness. We would be naive to think that only those who give feel good about their contributions. In fact, in my role at SSC, I have had the opportunity to witness both sides of this story. Earlier this school year, we awarded tuition assistance to a number of families. I informed them of the donors’ wish to help future generations of students be able to attend St. Stanislaus, and most of the families wrote thank you letters back to the donors. You can imagine the amount of joy and gratitude that the recipients felt after learning that they would be able to afford a St. Stanislaus education for their son. The specific amount of money given was irrelevant. What mattered, and ultimately increased their happiness, was the fact that they received a gift from someone else. Through this action of a donor spending money on someone else, everyone’s level of happiness was increased.

We can look at ourselves and ask these very same questions and how they apply to our lives. When was the last time you bought something for yourself and someone else? How did each of those experiences make you feel? Chances are, you felt pretty good after doing something for someone else. Sure, the luxuries of life, or even a nice steak dinner, are things we dream about, but the excitement is typically short-lived and often replaced with something more extravagant. It is through the impact that we make on the lives of others, no matter how large or small, that we find a greater happiness. Whether you buy your mother a bouquet of flowers, help a family afford tuition or even get roped into buying some Cokes to help a little girl purchase a dance outfit, you can be sure that you’ll end up feeling good about your contribution. So the next time someone says: “You can have all the money in the world, but you can’t buy happiness,” you can safely reply that it all depends on who you’re spending it on.

God Bless,

Christopher J. Mensi ‘01 Director of Advancement
