Simply.put,.the.West.Virginia.University.rifle.team.is.the.most.accomplished.collegiate.squad..With.14.national.championships.to.their.name,.the.most.recent.captured.just.two.years.ago.in.2009,.the.Mountaineers.set.the.nationwide.standard.for.sustained.success.. Six-year.WVU.coach.Jon.Hammond,.himself.a.former.Mountaineer.shooter,.has.resurrected.the.program.after.a.brief.absence.on.the.national.scene.and.led.them.to.four.straight.national.championships,.one.NCAA.team.title,.two.NCAA.air.rifle.titles.and.two.consecutive.Great.American.Rifle.Conference.(GARC).titles..Along.the.way,.Hammond.has.recruited.some.of.the.world’s.top.talent,.producing.35.National.Rifle.Association.All-Americans... WVU ON THE GLOBAL SCENE. A.program.rich.in.history,.the.West.Virginia.rifle.team.proudly.boasts.14.former.Olympians.among.its.alumni,.including.current.head.coach.Jon.Hammond.(Great.Britain,.2008)..At.least.one.former.Mountaineer.has.competed.in.every.Olympics.since.1976,.with.Hammond,.Mike.Anti.(USA),.Nicco.Campriani.(Italy).and.Dave.Johnson.(USA).all.participating.in.the.2008.Beijing.Summer.Games.. Most.recently,.Campriani,.the.2010.air.rifle.world.champion,.and.current.junior.Petra.Zublasing,.both.National.Rifle.Association.All-Americans,.captured.Olympic.quota.places.for.Italy.and.will.compete.for.a.spot.on.the.nation’s.squad.for.the.2012.London.Summer.Olympics;.Campriani.was.the.first.athlete.of.any.sport.to.earn.a.quota.for.the.2012.Games.. Hammond.also.has.made.a.name.for.himself.on.the.international.shooting.scene,.as.he.became.the.most.successful.Scottish.athlete.in.a.single.Commonwealth.Games.with.four.medal.wins.in.2010.–.two.Gold,.one.Silver.and.one.Bronze.. Many.current.Mountaineer.shooters.can.be.found.competing.on.the.International.Shooting.Sport.Federation.(ISSF).World.Cup.circuit.when.not.shooting.for.WVU..Additionally,.the.Mountaineers.are.frequent.competitors.at.USA.Shooting.Championships.

The.sport.of.rifle.requires.a.great.deal.of.muscular.endurance.and.a.high.level.of.kinesthetic.sense.of.awareness.to.fuel.stabilization.and.balance..An.efficient.heart.rate.is.also.important.for.the.student-athletes;.the.more.efficient.an.athlete’s.heart.can.pump.blood,.the.longer.he/she.will.have.between.heart.beats.to.square.their.rifle.on.target.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

. Winning.and.working.hard.are.important.to.the.West.Virginia.University.rifle.team..But.becoming.successful.and.positive.role.models.in.and.out.of.the.range.is.just.as.significant.to.them..The.Mountaineers.give.back.to.Morgantown.and.its.surrounding.communities.every.chance.they.get... “It’s.really.important.for.our.team.to.give.back,”.says.coach.Jon.Hammond..“Something.that.I.love.about.Morgantown.and.West.Virginia.is.that.the.athletic.department.and.the.teams.are.such.a.huge.part.of.both.the.city.and.the.whole.state.”.. The.Mountaineers.especially.enjoy.working.in.outdoor.settings,.and.regularly.volunteer.their.time.at.The.National.Hunting.and.Fishing.Days.at.Stonewall.Jackson.Resort..There,.the.team.interacts.with.visiting.children.and.gives.lessons.on.gun.safety.. With.coach.Hammond.putting.an.equal.emphasis.on.academics.and.athletics,.the.Mountaineers.are.constant.participants.in.the.“Read.Aloud”.program,.visiting.local.schools.and.not.only.reading.stories.to.the.younger.students,.but.also.encouraging.older.students.to.apply.themselves.to.their.studies... The.scope.of.the.athletic.training.services.encompass.various.domains.which.includes.injury.recognition,.treatment,.rehabilitation,.prevention,.education.and.counseling.that.will.enable.the.athlete.to.maintain.an.optimal.quality.of.life.beyond.the.span.of.athletic.competition... . Home.to.one.of.the.country’s.most.tradition-rich.programs,.the.WVU.rifle.range.is.a.reflection.of.the.long-term.success.enjoyed.by.the.14-time.national.champion.Mountaineers.. The.range.is.highlighted.by.the.presence.of.10.MEGAlink.electronic.scoring.systems,.the.most.up-to-date.system.used.by.some.of.the.country’s.proficient.shooters,.including.2008.Olympian.and.current.WVU.coach.Jon.Hammond.. The.technological.upgrade.at.the.WVU.facility.allows.a.student-athlete’s.shot.to.be.scored.based.on.sound.waves..With.the.advantage.of.a.computer.screen.located.at.the.shooter’s.stand,.team.members.can.view.the.results.of.their.shots.immediately.. The.system.adds.not.only.an.advantage.for.Mountaineer.shooters,.but.also.improves.spectators’.view.of.the.match..A.large.projection.screen.was.installed.in.the.viewing.room.so.fans.can.now.follow.along.shot-by-shot.with.the.athletes.. Another.unique.aspect.of.the.range.is.the.ability.for.shooters.to.work.simultaneously..Team.members.can.shoot.in.the.smallbore.position.at.the.50.foot.targets.while.others.can.also.shoot.the.10m.air.rifle.at.the.same.time.. Accompanying.the.many.features.of.the.range.is.a.comfortable.student.lounge.area.where.student-athletes.can.relax.before.and.after.meets..Other.amenities.include.a.gun.room.and.a.locker.room.

Scoring Information College.rifle.competition.includes.two.events:.air.rifle.and.smallbore.The.NCAA.initiated.a.new.rule.2010-11.that.mandated.that.each.team.can.declare.five.scoring.shooters.prior.to.a.match,.and.count.the.top.four.scores..The.same.five.shooters.do.not.have.to.count.for.smallbore.and.air.rifle..The.NCAA.Championships.is.the.only.exception.–.the.same.five.shooters.must.shoot.smallbore.and.air.rifle,.with.the.team.counting.the.best.four.scores.in.each.discipline..

Air Rifle Overview:.Competitors.stand.and.shoot.lead.pellets.from..177.caliber.guns.at.targets.10.meters.away..The.bullseye,.or.10-dot,.is.one-half.millimeter.wide.(about.the.size.of.the.period.at.the.end.of.this.sentence).The.Rifles:.Air.rifles.can.be.either.air.or.gas-powered.and.weigh.up.to.12.pounds.by.NCAA.regulations..The.rifles.have.metallic.sights.Course.Of.Fire:.With.the.new.electronic.targeting.system,.competitors.have.105.minutes.for.60.shots.from.the.standing.position.Perfect.Match.Score:.A.perfect.score.of.600.is.the.maximum.for.air.rifle.

Smallbore Overview:.In.smallbore.or.three-position.rifle,.athletes.fire..22.caliber.smallbore.rifles.from.the.prone,.standing.and.kneeling.positions.at.targets.50.feet.downrange..The.bullseye.is.a.millimeter.(slightly.larger.than.the.size.of.a.period.at.the.end.of.this.sentence).The.Rifles:.Athletes.shoot.free.rifles.(weight.limit.of.17.6.pounds).that.can.be.customized.with.special.accessories.and/or.alterations.that.fit.the.shooter’s.size.and.preferences..The.rifles.have.metallic.sights.Course.Of.Fire:.Athletes.fire.20.rounds.per.position.for.a.total.of.60.shots..The.total.time.limit.is.120.minutes.

Perfect.Match.Score:.A.perfect.score.of.600.is.the.maximum.for.smallbore.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. NCAA.titles.are.a.common.goal.for.all.West.Virginia.rifle.teams,.and.the.squad.has.made.good.on.its.ambition.14.times.since.1980,.the.most.of.any.team... With.a.talent.pool.envied.by.most,.the.Mountaineers.are.always.in.contention.for.individual.national.championships,.too,.with15.student-athletes.earning.19.combined.individual.titles,.the.most.of.any.collegiate.rifle.program..Four.Mountaineers.concluded.their.WVU.careers.with.two.national.titles:.John.Rost.(air.rifle,.1981,.1982),.Web.Wright.(smallbore,.1987,.1988),.Ann-Marie.Pfiffner.(air.rifle,.1991,.1992).and.Trevor.Gathman.(air.rifle,.1993,.1996).. Nicco.Campriani.is.the.most.recent.WVU.national.champion,.as.he.won.the.air.rifle.title.at.the.2011.NCAA.Championships;.he.was.the.first.Mountaineer.NCAA.winner.since.Marcos.Scrivner.claimed.the.smallbore.title.in.1997,.and.the.first.WVU.air.rifle.champion.since.Gathman.

The.four-time.National.Rifle.Association.All-American.tore.through.his.brief..Mountaineer.career..With.just.18.WVU.career.matches.to.his.name,.he.secured.almost.every.possible.honor.available.to.a.collegiate.shooter.and.capped.off.his.brilliant.tenure.with.the.2011.NCAA.individual.air.rifle.title.. In.addition.to.his.national.championship,.Campriani.was.a.repeat.Great.American.Rifle.Conference.(GARC).air.rifle,.smallbore.and.combined.score.champion..He.also.was.named.the.2011.GARC.Shooter.and.Senior.of.the.Year,.and.served.as.WVU’s.GARC.Scholar-Athlete.representative.. Campriani.broke.or.tied.every.record.in.the.WVU.record.book,.and.most.notably.he.shot.a.collegiate-record.600.air.rifle.twice.in.2011,.becoming.only.the.second.NCAA.shooter.to.attain.the.perfect.score... Graduation Rates. West.Virginia.University’s.graduation.rate.for.student-athletes.has.been.impressive,.to.say.the.least,.over.the.past.seven.years..The.ratio.of.student-athletes.graduating.to.the.general.student.body.has.increased.almost.every.year.. The.graduation.rate.for.student-athletes.is.based.upon.the.number.of.students.who.entered.the.University.receiving.athletic.scholarship.aid.in.a.given.academic.year,.and.their.progress.over.six.years..The.most.recent.figures.are.based.upon.the.progress.of.student-athletes.who.entered.WVU.during.2002-03.

APR.. The.West.Virginia.University.women’s.soccer.team,.men’s.basketball.team.and.women’s.cross.country.team.received.public.recognition.in.the.spring.of.2010.by.the.NCAA.for.their.latest.multiyear.Academic.Progress.Rate.(APR).scores..These.teams.posted.multiyear.APRs.in.the.top.10.percent.of.all.squads.in.each.sport..Each.year,.the.NCAA.honors.selected.Division.I.sports.teams.by.publicly.recognizing.their.latest.multiyear.APR... The.APR.provides.a.real-time.look.at.a.team’s.academic.success.each.semester.by.tracking.the.academic.progress.of.each.student-athlete.on.scholarship..The.APR.accounts.for.eligibility,.retention.and.graduation.and.provides.a.measure.of.each.team’s.academic.performance..

Student Athlete Advisory Committee . The.Student-Athlete.Advisory.Committee.(SAAC).provides.a.forum.for.the.“voice.of.the.student-athlete”.on.WVU’s.campus..SAAC.membership.provides.feedback.to.administration.about.how.to.better.WVU.athletic.programs..They.offer.input.on.the.rules,.regulations.and.policies.that.affect.student-athletes’.lives.on.NCAA.member.institution.campuses..

CHAMPS/Life Skills. The.many.challenges.that.today’s.college.student-athletes.face,.both.on.and.off.the.playing.field,.are.unmatched.in.the.history.of.higher.education..Unfortunately,.many.students.are.not.well.prepared.to.face.these.challenges.or.encounter.life.issues.that.undermine.health.and.success.in.college..To.prepare.student-athletes.for.the.demands.of.college.life.and.beyond,.the.NCAA.developed.the.CHAMPS.(Challenging.Athletes.Minds.for.Personal.Success)/Life.Skills.program.. In.the.spring.of.1995,.the.West.Virginia.University.Department.of.Intercollegiate.Athletics.initiated.its.own.CHAMPS/Life.Skills.program..WVU.was.one.of.only.170.schools.selected.by.the.NCAA.to.participate.in.their.national.pilot.program... The Early Years Inonlyhissecondyearasheadcoach,Hammondledthe2007-08riflesquadtoan8-3record,athird-placefinishattheGARCChampionshipsandasixth-placestandingattheNCAAChampionships,theMountaineers’firstappearanceinsixsea-sons. HammondguidedfiveMountaineerstoNRAsmallboreAll-Americahonorsthatseasonandalsoearnedindividualrecogni-tion,ashewasnamedtheGARCCoachoftheYearandlistedasthe2008NRADistinguishedCollegeCoach. HammondtookovertheMountaineerrifleprogramupontheretirementoflong-timecoachMarshaBeasleyin2006.Thatsea-son,heguidedthe2006-07teamtoitsfirstwinningseason(6-4)since2003.

Academic Achievements Astrongproponentforachievementintherangeandintheclassroom,Hammond’sshootershaveproventobewell-roundedstudent-athletes. Prior to Coaching at WVU Hammondearnedhisbachelor’sdegreefromtheUniversityofLeedswhilecompetingonitsrifleteam. HammondthenjourneyedtoWestVirginiatospendthe2002-03seasoncompetingfortheWVUrifleteamwhileworkingtowardhismaster’sdegreeinsportmanagement.HammondreturnedtoMorgantownin2006andbeganhiscoachingcareerasavolunteerassistantwiththeMountaineers. Inadditiontohishighlysuccessfulcareerasashooter,Hammondalsohasvolunteeredhistimetohelpothers.WhileamemberoftheLeedssquad,hehelpedcoachbeginningshootersaswellasassisttheteamwithorganizationaltasks. HammondalsohelpedinitiateBlindShootinginScotlandwithhisfather.HeworkedcloselywithagroupfromtheGrampianSocietyfortheBlindtoteachbasicrifletechniques.Hegavetheshooterspositionalandmentaladviceandundertookthetaskofraisingfundsforalloftheequipment,aswellasorganizingavenuetoholdtheclub’smatches.


One-on-One[asitdownwithcoachhammond]

The squad is relatively young this year, with only three returning letterwinners. How do you adjust your coaching style when you have so many newcomers in the fold?

Ithink,atthebeginning,itwilltakealittlelon-gertofigureoutwherethey’reat.Youhavetodeciphertheirtendencies,theirstrengthsandtheirweaknesses.Therewillbemorehands-on-coachingintherangetostartwithsoIcangetafeelfortheirrealtechniques.

Theyoungerstudent-athletesaregoingtoneedmoreinstructionontherighttech-niques.Iwanttoaccomplishthatearly,notonlysowecanpreventbadhabitsfromform-ing,butalsosowecanbreakanypreviousbadhabits.

Ithinktherewillbemoreactivecoachingearlyonthisseason.Throughoutthefirstfewweeksoftheseason,Iwillbebuildingaknowledgebaseofwherethey’reatandalsomakingshort-andlong-termplansforeachindividual.

Along those lines, the last three teams have been structured around the seven seniors that graduated in 2011. How does the team dynamic change when you lose so many letterwinners?

Youhavetorelyontheleadershipthatre-mains,andthatis(seniors)Mike(Kulbacki),Justin(Pentz)and(junior)Petra(Zublasing).Addingsomanynewcomersinoneseasonre-allygivesyoutheopportunitytodevelopfreshideasandbringfresh,newthingstotheteam,suchasadifferentatmosphereanddifferentpersonalities.

Ithink,asacoachingstaff,weallneedtorememberthattheyarefreshmenandtheyhaven’theardwhatwehavebeenpreachingforawhile.Wehavetoremembertokeepthatgoingandtomakesure,everyday,thatwearekeepinganeyeonthemandtheyaredoingthecorrectthings.

LikeIsaid,wereallyneedtorelyontheleadershipinplacetoimpressuponthenew

Mountaineershowthisteamworksandwhatweexpectfromthemregardingworkethic,trainingandcontributingtotheoveralldynamicoftheteam.

Mike and Justin are the only two holdovers from the 2009 national championship team. Will you depend on their experience to moti-vate the team? Are there benefits to having a thirsty team that hasn’t won the NCAA title yet?

Thereareprosandcons.Ithinkthebiggestproisthatthenationalchampionshipisgoingtobesomethingnewagainforthemajorityoftheteam.Thereshouldbeahungerandadesiretoobtainthattrophy.Outoftheteam,onlytwohavewonanationalchampionship,andthatisthegoalwestriveforyearinandyearout.Therenevershouldbecomplacency,butwhenyouhaven’tdonesomethingbefore,oftentimesthereisanincreaseddrivetoachievethatac-complishment.

You always stress success in the range and in the classroom. There has been at least one CoSIDA Academic All-American on each of your last three teams. How important is it for the team to stay focused on its studies too?

It’sreallyimportant.Thoseawardsshowthatthereisahighacadem-icstandardwithintheteamandalsoexpectedoftheteam.Ithinkwehadsomegreatindividualsoverthelastseveralyears,butourwholeteamhasbeenprettysolidandourteamGPAhasbeenashighasit’severbeen.

Ithinkit’simportantforthenewcomerstounderstandthatacadem-icsareimportant.NotonlydoIstressthis,butourreturningteammembersalsostressthispoint.Theyaretherolemodelsforthissquad,andtheyarealldoingwellinschool-theygototheirclasses,theygetgoodgradesandtheywanttoearnacademicawards.It’simportantforthefreshmentofollowtheirlead.

Ialwayssaythatifyou’redoingwellinschool,youwilldowellintherange.Ifyouaresomeonethatreallystrugglesinschool,youwillfaceextrastressandpressures,andthosemayimpactyourperformanceintherange.Everythingtiestogether.Iwouldprobablyratherwinanationalchampionshipthanseeeveryoneontheteamearna4.0GPA,buttheyhavetodowellintheclassroominordertoperformtotheiroptimumpotentialintherange.

Live stats will be provided this season for all home matches, and the interest in the team is at a peak right now. How important is this benefit to the growth and retention of the loyal fan base?

It’sthenextstepforward.It’sreallyimportant,andafewschoolsalreadyprovideit.It’sagreattoolforfans,parentsandsupporterstobeabletofollowthehomematcheslive.Idefinitelyreceiveanumberoftextsthroughoutmatches,andit’shardformetokeepupwiththemwhileI’mcoaching.Theselivestatsaregoingtoprovidethemup-to-datescoring.It’salsoanotherplaceforfanstoconnectwiththeteamandtracktheirsuccess.

Your student-athletes are always competing. During the offseason, many of the shooters compete for their national teams at exclusive national and international tourna-ments. How does this additional experience further the team’s success?

Itdefinitelyhelpsalotbecausetheyallcomebackwithnewexperiencesanddifferentmotivations.TheonesontheteamthatwanttostriveforinternationalhonorshaveanOlympianandafutureOlympianontheteamtolooktoward.

Forsomeofthem,thesematchesgivethemsomethingtodooverthesummermonths.Todowellisnotonlygoodfortheteam,butalsoishugeforrecruitingaswell.Prospectsreallytakenoteofwherethegoodshootersare.Ifourteammembersareouttherecompetingwellontheinternationalandnationalcircuit,it’sreallyimportantforourrecruiting.Thatexperiencealsogivesthemconfidenceforthenextcol-legiateseason.

RedshirtfreshmanThomasKyankoisthefourthreturningMountaineer.ThoughtheWellsburg,W.Va.,nativesatoutthe2010-11season,hegainedinvaluableexperiencepracticingwiththeteamintheWVURifleRange.Kyankoalsosawsuccessatthe2011USAShootingNationalCham-pionshipsoverthesummer,ashewonthejuniormen’s50m3position,finishedthirdinthejuniormen’s10mairrifleandplacedninthinthejuniormen’s50mrifleprone.Additionally,healsoplacedthirdand14thinthemen’s50m3positionandthemen’s10mairrifle,respectively.Kyankoisex-pectedtopushforacountingspotonthisyear’sroster. JamesP.ClementshassaidthatnouniversityinthecountrymeansmoretoitsstatethanWestVirginiaUniversitymeanstoWestVirginia.SincebecomingWVU’s23rdpresidentonJune30,2009,Dr.ClementshasfocusedonexpandingtheUniversity’sroleasa21stcenturyland-grantinstitution. WithaStrategicFrameworkfortheFuturenowinplace,WVUiscommittedtoexcellinginfivekeyareas:academicexcellence,researchandinnovation,diversity,globalengagementandenhancingthewell-beingandqualityoflifeofourcitizens. Dr.Clementshasannouncedseveralinitiativesinsupportofthesestrategicplan-ninggoals,including:adding100newfacultymemberstodecreasethestudent-facultyratioandsupportcoreandnicheacademicandresearchcurriculums;buildinganewstudenthealthfacilitytoincreasewellnessefforts;dedicatingcapitalfundstoexpandoutdoorrecreationalspaceforstudents;andincreasingresearchtostrengthentheUniversity’spositionasaneconomicengineaswellasaleaderinfieldssuchasenergy,biometricsandhealthsciences. Othergoalsincludefindingmoreefficientandeffectivewaystousetechnologytodriveprogress,increasingthediversityofWVU’slearningcommunityanddevelopinganevenbroaderglobalfocusinpreparingstudentsfornewinternationalopportunities. Otherinitiativesfocusonincreasingstudentretention,increasingWVU’sdoctoralprogramenrollment,enhancingleadershipdevelopmentandincreasingoperatingfunds. Thismomentumhascarriedovertorecordgainsinenrollment,researchandprivategiving.Studentenrollmentacrossallcampusesreachedmorethan32,000;researchcontractandgrantawardsforthepasttwoyearsaveragedanall-timehighof$176million;andannualprivategivingtoWVUreachedanall-timehighofnearly$100millionthispastyear. TheUniversitywasalsorecognizedasamongthesixpercentofinstitutionsinthecountrythattheCarnegieFoundationclassifiesashighlyengagedinservice,andasoneofthefourbestflagshipuniversitiesinthecountryforaccessbytheEducationTrust. Onanationallevel,hewasnominatedandselectedtoparticipateinthe81stJointCivilianOrientationConferencethroughtheU.S.DepartmentofDefense,andinvitedbyU.S.CommerceSecretaryGaryLocketojoinaselect15-memberInnovationAdvisoryBoardthatwillguideastudyofU.S.economiccompetitivenessandinnovation.Healsoco-chairstheAssociationofPublicandLand-GrantUniversities’EnergyForum. BeforejoiningtheMountaineerfamily,Dr.ClementsservedasprovostandvicepresidentatTowsonUniversity,thesecond-largestpublicuniversityinMaryland.Underhisleadership,Towsondevelopedacademicandstudentsupportprogramsthatledtoimpressivein-creasesinenrollmentaswellasretentionandgraduationrates.Towson’sexternally-fundedresearchincreasedby36percentduringDr.Clements’tenureasprovost. Priortobecomingprovost,heservedasTowsonUniversity’svicepresidentforeconomicandcommunityoutreachandastheRobertW.DeutschDistinguishedProfes-sorandchairoftheDepartmentofComputerandInformationSciences.Hewasafour-timerecipientofTowson’sFacultyMemberoftheYearAwardgivenbystudentsattheUniversity. Dr.Clementshasanacademicbackgroundincomputerscience.HeearnedaB.S.incomputerscienceandanM.S.andPh.D.inoperationsanalysisfromtheUniver-sityofMarylandBaltimoreCounty(UMBC),aswellasanM.S.incomputersciencefromJohnsHopkinsUniversity.Thefourtheditionofhisprojectmanagementtextbookwaspublishedinfourlanguagesandusedinmul-tiplecountries;thefiftheditionwasrecentlyreleased.AtWVU,Dr.ClementsisatenuredprofessorintheCollegeofEngineeringandMineralResources’LaneDepartmentofComputerScienceandElectricalEngineering. Successfulateachofhispreviouscareerstops,OliverLucklookstocontinuethatstreakatWestVirginiaUniversity.AformerMountaineerquarterback,Luck,appointedtheUniversity’s11thDirectorofAthleticsbyPresidentJamesP.ClementsonJune9,2010,hasalreadymadestridesinjustoneyearinenhancingWVU’sroleasaplayerinthecol-legiateworld. “OliverLuckissomeonewhohassuc-ceededatthehighestlevelsateverythinghehasdone–fromhiscollegeandprofessionalfootballplayingdaystohisacademicpursuitsandhisprofessionalbusinesscareer,”saidClements.“Heistheclearchoicetocarryforwardwhathastrulybeenagoldenerainathletics.” “It’sanincrediblehonorformetobeappointedasathleticdirectoratmyalmamater,”saidLuck.“Icaredeeplyaboutthisschool.I’vehadanopportunitytoserveontheBoardofGovernorsthelastcoupleofyears,andit’sgivenmeatremendousviewpointofhowimportantintercollegiateathleticsisataland-grantinstitutionlikeWVU. “WVUistrulyoneoftheoutstandingland-grantuniversitiesinthecountry,andIamsopleasedtobeapartofitsmomentumandgrowth.Thisisatremendousopportunity-achancetoreturntoaUniversityandastatethatIloveatadynamicandstrategictimeinitshistory.” Inhisfirstyear,LuckhashiredfourheadcoacheswhilemaintainingthesuperiorlevelofsuccessWVUhasrecentlyenjoyed.Inaddition

Luck’sjourneytothebigchairatWVUbeganinhisnativeCleveland,wherein1977hewasnamedtheClevelandTouchdownClubPlayeroftheYearatSt.IgnatiusHigh.LuckchoseWVUoverIvyLeagueschoolsHarvardandYale,embarkinguponacareerthatsawhimestablishschoolrecordsfortouchdownpassesandcompletionsduringhisplayingdays,whilealsoleadingtheMountaineerstoa26-6upsetvictoryoverFloridainthe1981PeachBowl. Hisbestseasoncameasaseniorin1981whenhecompleted216of394passesfor2,448yardsand16touchdowns.Hepassedforacareer-high360yardsina27-24losstoSyracuseattheCarrierDomeinthefinalregular-seasongameofhiscareer.
