“I was looking for a university where I would be more than a face in the crowd. At Rogers State University, I’m a member of the Honors Program and the varsity cheerleading squad, all while pursuing my degree in medical/molecular biology. I don’t know for sure where I’ll be ten years from now but I do know I’ll be working in the medical !eld and my education will have prepared me to be successful. RSU has given me so many opportunities that I would not have gotten at other schools. For that, I’ll always be grateful.”

Greetings from the Hill and wel-come to the fifth edition of HillcatBasketball.

The RSU men’s and women’s bas-ketball teams have enjoyedtremendous success since theirinaugural 2007-08 seasons. Lastseason was particularly memo-rable with both teams advancing

to the NAIA National Tournament in the same year for thefirst time ever.

Coach Justin Barkley’s men’s squad gave us all a thrill byadvancing to the quarterfinals of the Big Dance beforebowing out in Kansas City. Coach Amy Williams’ womencontinued their ascent to the top of the Sooner AthleticConference with 23 wins and a Top 25 national ranking in2010-11.

Both teams enter the 2011-12 campaign ranked in the Top25 and looking to improve on last year’s triumphs. With allthe excitement surrounding our sports and academic pro-grams, I can’t think of a better time to be involved with theHillcats.

We are very proud of our basketball teams and eager tosee what the future holds for these fledging programs. Theoutpouring of community support has played a huge rolein our early success and will remain vital to Hillcat Athleticsas we strive to raise the bar once again in 2011-2012.

Thank you for all you do in support of the Hillcats!

RSU student athletes have the opportunity to live in on-campus apartments that opened this fall. Each apartmentcomes with cable TV, internet access, a kitchen, bathroom, private bedroom, and access to study lounges and recre-ational facilities.

Of course, campus improvements also include ongoingprojects to update academic buildings and improve class-room resources. Just last year, we celebrated the openingof new Baird Hall which boasts classrooms equipped withSmart Boards, a performance studio, an art gallery, and anumber of other exciting features.

I am not only proud of everything RSU offers our studentathletes, I am beyond proud of the contribution our stu-dent athletes make to RSU.

Thank you for joining us to see it happen for a fifth season.

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success StoryRogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education.

Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent, earningRSU the title of one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities.

RSU is a dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,600 students, widely recognized for its high-quality academicprograms, distance learning options, and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residen-tial university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technol-ogy, environmental conservation, military history, sport management, and game development.

Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studiesthrough RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence inits nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Collegesand Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a majoraccomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU.

RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with pri-vate, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earncollege credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders andpolicymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.

The university also boasts an Honors Program, whichprovides an atmosphere where scholars can challengethemselves academically to maximize their college expe-rience through specialized courses, student/faculty jointresearch projects, and a strong emphasis on servicelearning in the community.

In addition, the President's Leadership Class (PLC), afour-year scholarship program that fosters personal andprofessional development, was designed for RSU stu-dents who have demonstrated leadership abilities.

RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy, SouthKorea, and Wales through the University's Studies-at-Large Program. The international study programs providestudents with opportunities to see the world, learn aboutother cultures, and enrich their educational experience.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, hasbecome the centerpiece of the main campus inClaremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facilitycombines student development programs under oneroof, serves as a central location for students to study andsocialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campusin Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, confer-ence centers, and meeting rooms for the community.

A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on theClaremore campus was completed in 2010. The newBaird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of theleading-edge features associated with higher learningtoday, including classrooms equipped with SmartBoards, a performance studio, an art gallery, and an out-door classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days.

A Brief History of RSURSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters andsons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first buildingon the school's campus.

However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy(OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971.

Known as the “West Point of the Southwest,” OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, bothin military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during WorldWar II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.

In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior col-lege grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted avariety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station, and intercollegiateathletics.

In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accredita-tion as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaurete level was granted in 2000.

Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs tomore than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville and Pryor.

Academic DevelopmentThe Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes asthey strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support suchas advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete.

Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work withtutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes grow into responsi-ble adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future.

The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrews, is there every step of the way for all athletes, toensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE ProgramsThe Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a vari-ety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them infor-mation useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs:

Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners, and courtesies. Each athlete is givena demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given exam-ples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse.

“It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes about the exist-ing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more carefuldecisionmaking.

Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are givenan overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

9

Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned aboutthe dangers of gambling addictions and also are warnedagainst gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violationof NAIA and NCAA rules.

RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order toprovide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of Character

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)Champions of Character program is designed to instill anunderstanding of character values in sport, and provide prac-tical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use inmodeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Characterprogram addresses character issues more comprehensivelythan any other national program for youth. The program cur-rently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly300 college and university campuses in North America andextends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA has been informally teaching character develop-ment through athletics for decades. The core values ofrespect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, andsportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in theChampions of Character program.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an education-al outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of characterand integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but foryounger students, coaches, and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators, and community partnersall have a role in developing students of character. The NAIAChampions of Character program brings them training, guidelines, and behavior models to create positive environ-ments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

After a remarkable run to the Final Eight at the BuffaloFunds NAIA National Championship a year ago, HeadCoach Justin Barkley added 10 newcomers who will joinsix returners to make up the 2011-12 squad that willboast six seniors and seven juniors.

“We want to continue to build on the solid foundationthat the team from last year and previous teams that RSUhas put on the floor set before us,” Barkley said. “I likethis team, if we handle our business and continue toimprove on and off the floor I think we can have suc-cess.”

ReturnersThe Hillcats will turn to a trio of veteranreturners to lead the team. MauriceRutherford returns for his final seasonon the Hill. The redshirt seniorhas been with the Hillcats sincethe inception of athletics in 2007.

“Of the six returners, you don’thave to look any further thansenior Maurice Rutherford,”Barkley said. “He has beenhere through some reallygood teams. He has foughtthrough some adversity witha knee injury but this is hissenior year and he will jointhe team at Christmas dueto a semester rule with theNAIA. He has been a con-stant, day in and day out. Mauricehas been a solid kid that you canhang your hat on not only on thecourt but off the court as well.”

Coach Barkley is also turning to sen-ior Joey Twilley and junior AlexEwings to provide leadership to theteam.

“This is a big year for a lot of guys,”Barkley said. “I have been extremely

Men’s Basketball Outlookpleased with Alex Ewings and Joey Twilley. They haveboth bought into the system and this is their program. Iam hoping this will be a big senior season for Joey.”

Larry Cox is returning for his final season after playing in23 contests as a junior. The Byron, Ga. native was a keycontributor in the Hillcats run to the NAIA Final Eight.Jeremy Marseille is also returning for his senior campaignand sophomore Jordan Burrell is back after playing in 29contests for the Hillcats during his freshman season.

NewcomersFive of the 10 newcomers have competed at the NCAADivision I level in their collegiate career, while two comefrom the NCAA Division II level, one is a junior college

transfer and two are from the high school ranks. RSUhasn’t seen a recruiting class with such Division Iexperience since the inaugural class in 2007 fea-tured six Division I transfers.

“My coaching staff has done an outstandingjob with the recruiting class,” Barkleysaid. “We are really pleased with theguys we brought in this year. I wouldsay about every kid we brought willbe leaned on in some capacity. Eachplayer will have the opportunity tomake an immediate impact. They areearning their playing time on the prac-

tice floor every day. I think we will be able toplay deeper into our lineup than we did ayear ago and hopefully that is somethingthat will help us down the stretch.”

ExpectationsThe Hillcats are looking to finish whatthey started a year ago. In his secondyear at the helm of the men’s basket-ball program, Barkley says theteam’s sights are on the Big Dancein Kansas City, Mo. However, toachieve their goal the Hillcats willhave to contend in conferenceplay.

Men’s Basketball Outlook

“We are going to have to be mature very early,” Barkley said. “RSU has had success in a short amount of time and we aregoing to get everyone’s best shot. We have to come ready to go every single night. Right now we have such a new teamwith a lot of new faces and it is going to take time for our chemistry to come together. I think once we learn and buildtrust in one another we will have some opportunities to do things that not only the players can be proud of but also theuniversity and community as well.”

The climb to the top won’t be quite as steep as it was a year ago as RSU was picked just outside of the Top 10, comingin at No. 11 in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. The Hillcats were slated second inthe Sooner Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

“Being ranked early is primarily based on the success we have had in the past as a program,” Barkley said. “It is definite-ly nice of our peers to think of us this highly but we really have to prove on the court. The SAC is easily considered oneof the best small college conferences across the country. There are no nights off and we are going to get tested in all 22games. It's not where you start but where you finish.”

u The Hillcats set their sights on a trip to the Big Dance in Kansas City, Mo.

With a team full of veteran leadership, the Rogers Statewomen’s basketball squad was able to reach heightsnever seen before in the program’s four-year history. Lastseason, the team played for a Sooner AthleticConference Championship and reached the NAIANational Tournament for the first time.

Head Coach Amy Williams and her staff have added eightplayers who will join five returners from last season in whatwill be a junior laden roster for the Hillcats in 2011-12.

ReturnersThe Hillcats will look to Claremore native Logan Froeseas a leader on the floor. The junior played in 32 gamesas a sophomore and has tallied 478 points in her twoseasons on the Hill.

“Logan Froese is our only returning starter withsignificant experience,” Williams said. “Ifshe can stay healthy and consistent, wewill likely lean on her heavily to leadand educate.”

Sasha Barnes and Brittani Smithreturn for their final season inHillcats red and blue. Barnesand Smith each played in33 contests a year ago.Smith posted 181points and 105rebounds, helping theCats to the NAIANational Tournament.

“We have been asking ourreturners to be great leaders for theeight new players,” Williams said.“We want them to help the new-comers understand our system andthe way things are done in ourprogram. We are looking for themto educate the newcomers on thechallenges that come with com-peting in the grueling SoonerAthletic Conference andhelp them understandthe level of mental andphysical toughness ittakes to win in thisleague.”

The Hillcats have some big shoes to fill as five playerscompleted their careers last season. Hunter Petersonclosed out her career holding 11 career records. AndreaMiles finished her four-year career as a Hillcat ranking inthe top three of 10 different career statistical categories. In two-years of service, Candice Stewart became thecareer leader in blocks and defensive rebounds.

Although they only spent one season with the program,Cortney Crockett and Angie Criner made significant con-tributions. The duo garnered a stack of honors and each

played in all 33 contests. Criner was named to theNAIA Division I Women’s Basketball All-Americathird team while Crocket earned All-Americahonorable mention. Crockett led the team inscoring as she averaged 13.8 points per gameand dished a team-high 117 assists along withsetting the single-game record for steals and

the single-season record for pointsscored with 454 on the year. Crineraveraged 13 points per game, nabbed 63 steals and poured in asingle-season record 98 freethrows.

“Last year's team was very specialand we are hoping this team willbe special in its own right as well,”Williams said. “While it is virtuallyimpossible to replace the experi-

ence that Pooh (Andrea Miles) andHunter brought to our program and thethreat of having two All-Americans on thecourt together, we look for this team tobe a well-rounded, high-energy teamwith several players capable of steppingup on any given night.”

NewcomersAs the Hillcats welcome eight newcomersto the squad, senior Gianna Woods stands

out with a wealth of experience under herbelt. She joins RSU after starting for Henderson StateUniversity last season. She averaged 15 points andeight rebounds at HSU. Woods began her career atNCAA Division I Robert Morris University.

“Gianna Woods transfers in as a senior and has some strong college playing experience,” Williams said. “She is a goodathlete with high potential to make an impact for us this season.”

Ariani Silva, Leah Smith and Sierra Cornwell will also look to make an instant impact on the court this season. Silva playedtwo seasons at Cowley College where she was named to the All-Jayhawk East Conference team and earned first team all-region and third team all-american honors. Smith joins the Hillcats after an impressive two year career at Penn ValleyCommunity College. She was a two-time Co-MVP at Penn Valley and averaged 18 points, three assists, two rebounds andthree steals last season as a sophomore. Cornwell joins RSU after spending the previous two seasons at Connors StateCollege where she earned second team all-conference honors the previous two seasons. She averaged eight steals as asophomore and helped lead CSC to a conference championship.

“Ariani Silva was a junior college All-American at Cowley County Community College last year and is a tough and talent-ed player that we hope will make an immediate impact with the loss of several guards from last year,” Williams said. “LeahSmith is a very capable scorer and Sierra Cornwell can affect the game with her defensive presence.”

ExpectationsThe Hillcats compiled a program best 23-win season a year ago and although there are several new faces in the program, the coaching staff hopes to see their young team flourish over the course of the season.

“It is difficult to place expectations on a team that has more newcomers than returners,” Williams said. “I am still veryuncertain how well this team will come together, but there is the potential for our team to accomplish some great things.”

u Hillcat fans will enjoy 18 home dates during the 2011-12 season.

Three Hillcat women earned all-conference honors as jun-ior Angie Criner was named Newcomer of the Year alongwith receiving first team recognition. Crockett was namedto the second team while Stewart garnered honorablemention.

After being predicted seventh in the conference in the pre-season by the league coaches, the Hillcat women finishedalone in fourth place in the SAC.

Five players return for the 2011-12 campaign as RSU lostfour players that were a part of a senior class that built theprogram to the level it stands at today. Joined by key new-comers and a strong returning class, the Hillcats will lookto return to the NAIA National Tournament in 2012.

The 2010-11 Rogers State women’s basketball teamreached territory never seen in the program’s four-year his-tory. Head Coach Amy Williams’ squad competed in theNAIA National Tournament for the first time, made its firstappearance in the Sooner Athletic ConferenceChampionship game and defeated the No. 2 team in thenation, while tallying the most wins in program history.

A 23-10 record was highlighted with a trio of victories overnationally-ranked teams. A homecoming victory over thenNo. 15 Langston University, 75-68 got the season goingright. RSU defeated No. 2 Oklahoma City on a neutral site, the University of Tulsa’s Reynolds Center due to wintryweather, 73-70 for the biggest win in program history. TheHillcats then toppled No. 22 Lubbock Christian in the finalregular season game, 80-75, and gave the Lady Chaparralstheir first loss at home all season.

The Hillcat women opened the season 7-4 with close loss-es to Langston, Northwestern Oklahoma State and JohnBrown University. A loss to Oklahoma City opened thestart of the 2011 calendar year but the Hillcats closed outthe regular season on a 13-3 run. The lone losses came toWayland Baptist and Southern Nazarene twice during thestretch.

RSU avenged two earlier losses to John Brown by knock-ing off the Golden Eagles in the opening round of the SACtournament, 60-55. Oklahoma Baptist was next on theCats path to a title and didn’t stand in the way as RSU won74-59. Southern Nazarene met the Hillcats in the titlegame and once again was too much for the ladies fromClaremore, as the Crimson Storm was victorious 52-48.

In the NAIA National Tournament the Hillcats controlledthe opening 33 minutes but Westminster College was ableto fight back as RSU had one of its worst shooting nightsof the season. Hitting 33 percent from the field and con-necting on just one 3-pointer, the Cats were equally as badat the charity stripe making just 9-of-19.

Four seniors completed their careers on the Hill, includingtwo that had spent all four years in Hillcats red and blue.Hunter Peterson closed out her career holding 11 careerrecords. The Jenks, Okla., native became the first memberof the 1,000 point club and played 128 games in hercareer after being one of the first signees to the program.

Andrea Miles closed out here four-year career as a Hillcatranking in the top three of 10 different career statisticalcategories. In two years of service, Candice Stewartbecame the career leader in blocks and defensiverebounds. Cortney Crockett came to the Hill transferringfrom Delaware State and left a lasting mark on the pro-gram in just one year.

GO HILLCATS!

Page 72: 2011-12 Rogers State University Basketball Media Guide

HillcatThe university’s official mascot, the “Hillcat,” is a uniqueblue and red animal that serves as a source of campuspride and provides a visual identity for the university’sAthletics, Student Activities, and other school spirit pro-grams.

The “Hillcat” embodies the enthusiastic, determined andbold spirit of the university’s athletic programs and thepride our students and alumni feel for the institution.

It is a fictitious cousin of the bobcat, which is indigenousto northeast Oklahoma.

The mascot also draws its name from “College Hill,” atraditional nickname for RSU. The university sits atop ahill overlooking the city of Claremore.

The name was conceived independently by a group ofRSU students in spring 2005, and approved by theUniversity Mascot Committee, Student GovernmentAssociation, President, and Administration.

The mascot was developed and officially unveiled to thecampus in 2005 by RSUPR – the university’s Office ofPublic Relations – with the assistance of SME Brandingof New York, N.Y.

Fear the ClawNot long after Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball wasintroduced at RSU, the home court at the ClaremoreExpo Center quickly gained a reputation as a formidablevenue for opponents.

As a member of the Hillcat team aligns himself or herselfon the free throw line, the crowd at the Expo Centerextends one arm skyward and makes the sign of the clawwith their fists.

If the shot falls successfully, arms descend in the mannerof the scratch of a ferocious wild cat.

As members of an opposing team prepare to shoot a freethrow, the rowdy RSU student section has been knownto intimidate the shooter. Depending on the shooter’sfortitude, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!

Homecoming WeekThe university celebrated the first-ever Homecoming dur-ing the first week of November 2007, during the firstHillcat men’s and women’s basketball games.

At RSU, Homecoming is quickly becoming a campus-wide tradition.

A bonfire is typically held the night before the big gamesin the open area north of the University Village A studentapartments.

A “Paint the Paw” spirit competition is held duringHomecoming Week, in which students and staff mem-bers compete to show their Hillcat pride.

The Hillcat Hacker Invitational is a fun-filled golf eventplayed amidst the hazards of Rogers State University’sscenic Claremore campus. The game features specialnondestructive golf balls and is designed for pros, ama-teurs and hackers alike. The goal of this event is to gen-erate camaraderie among the university’s friends andalumni, showcase RSU’s beautiful and historic campusand establish an outstanding Hillcat Homecoming tradi-tion.

Other events include grocery cart races and spirit boardcompetitons. The Homecoming Tailgate Party, held out-side of the Claremore Expo Center, is one of the mostpopular Homecoming events for students, alumni, andthe community.
