The language of the moon.

the bush where it starts to get dark as soon as the sun disappears behind the trees. But if there’s a full moon, it makes all the difference when you have to find your way around the campsite.”

While doing background research for the Full Moon Series, Mantha discovered that Canada’s First Nations people share a deep connection with the moon, “In fact, aboriginal cultures around the world consistently look to the skies for information—when to plant; when to hunt; when animals begin their migration.”

“I believe the moon has magical qualities that are undeniable,” says Mantha, “Ever notice how people glance up at night, even if for a second? The moon’s size and location may change, but its powerful allure remains the same. This is why I kept it silver in all the designs. Regardless of the weather or the season, the moon is constant—a reassuring source of comfort for us here on earth.”

Timekeeper for the Algonquin people. In North America, the First Nations tribes that comprise the Algonquin people looked to the moon to track time. They assigned a name to every full moon to reflect the seasonal activities that accompanied each cycle. Theirs was a vast territory that extended from Lake Superior to the eastern seaboard, resulting in a variety of names throughout the Algonquin community. The buck, hunter, wolf and pink full moons represent summer, autumn, winter and spring.

Canadian artist John Mantha has created countless visual works for advertising agencies, corporations, book publishers, magazines, television and movies, so when he was asked to illustrate for coins, he eagerly embraced this challenging new medium.

Mantha is undeterred by the challenge of downsizing his creative thinking from a movie screen or book page to the minute proportions of a coin, “The size of the finished product is really secondary. I see my role as an interpreter. I listen carefully to my client to get a ‘feeling’ for what they are trying to say, and then figure out how to express it through my art. Some people speak multiple languages to verbally communicate an idea, but the languages I use are visual; and they include everything from the paint or pencil; the paper or canvas; colours, shapes, style and perspective.”

The Full Moon Series is Mantha’s sixth collaboration with the Mint. “I have a great appreciation for the beauty of the full moon,” he says. “I grew up in Sault Ste. Marie and would go canoeing deep in

The magpie on this coin is one of China’s most common and powerful symbols of happiness. Its name (xi que) translates directly to “the bird of happiness.” In fact, the decorations at Chinese weddings will often feature two magpies to wish “double happiness” for the bride and groom.

The lotus flower that creates the background on this coin is another visual and auditory symbol for happiness. Its name (lian) sounds identical to the word “continuous.” Combining the magpie with lotus flowers is a poignant way to express a wish for prolonged happiness, luck and success.

A treasured national symbol. The distinctive shape of the red maple leaf immediately says, “Canada” to people around the world. Its use as a symbol for all that is Canadian dates back centuries, but historians generally recognize 1836 as the year when the maple leaf earned its status as an official national emblem. The founding cultures had their fleur-de-lis (France), roses (England), thistles (Scotland) and shamrocks (Ireland). With the maple leaf, immigrants and native-born Canadians alike could express their pride in their promising new home.

Throughout the 19th century, the maple leaf was quickly popularized in print and song. Provincial flags, shields and coats of arms seemed incomplete without it. From 1876 to 1901, the maple leaf was a fixture on virtually every Canadian circulation coin. It became the centrepiece of Canada’s one-cent coin that has been in circulation since 1937.

2011FineSilverKilogramCoin—MapleLeafForeverHighlights:This incomparable treasure contains one kilogram (2.2 lb) of 99.99% pure silver and measures 101.8 mm (4 in) across its diameter. With its extremely low mintage, this coin is an important tribute to Canada’s heritage. Comes in an elegant Canadian maple wood display case.

Highlights:With an unparalleled standard of 99.999% pure gold, unusual scallop shape, and an extremely low, limited mintage, this coin promises to be popular among collectors.

Coindesign:A ceremonial lion from a traditional lion dance. A stream of firecrackers flanked at right, the explosions depicted by star bursts throughout the design. Above the lion’s head is a seal with the Chinese character for happiness.

An exclusive 888 coins available worldwide.

Quick find: mint.ca/113195

The lion dance is an energetic and colourful custom that dates back to ancient China. To this day, it still figures prominently during Chinese New Year celebrations or any joyous ceremony, such as the opening of a new business or building; or during planting and harvesting periods.

Firecrackers often accompany the lions as they dance about in order to enhance the lion’s roar and chase away evil spirits. Firecrackers usher out the old and bring in the new; they maximize the celebration and good fortune.

It is common for family and friends to actively bestow blessings of happiness upon each other—an uplifting and joyous message that is beautifully expressed by this exquisite scallop-shaped gold coin.

Honouring nature’s sacred gift. The Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapilla) is Canada’s most widespread bird species, flitting about wooded areas as far north as Alaska. It measures a mere 12–15 cm (4.75–6 in) tip to tip but is surprisingly hardy to brave the northern climate and larger avian species. Black-capped Chickadees will not hesitate to challenge intruders and can often be seen chasing other birds away from feeders. This clever bird is also known to hide its food—and remember its hidden cache 28 days later!

The Black-capped Chickadee also has notable thermoregulation abilities to decrease its body temperature by 10–12° C (50–54° F) below daytime levels to conserve energy on cold winter nights.

The official bird of New Brunswick sets to the busy task of nesting from April to June. A tree hole is ideal for this compact bird, but it will not refuse an abandoned woodpecker nest or hand-made nesting box.

Marine folklore tells tales of menacing creatures hiding beneath ocean waves, but such mysteries are not limited to the open sea. Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster, British Columbia’s Ogopogo and Quebec’s Memphré suggest numerous inland lakes hold similar secrets.

Lake Memphremagog is located about 150 km (93 mi) southeast of Montreal; a long, narrow lake that runs north-south across the border into Vermont. First Nations legends from the area speak

of mysterious monsters lurking in the lake. Official records begun in 1816 reveal as many as eight sightings every year; the majority of them confirmed by numerous, independent eyewitness accounts.

The descriptions of Memphré are so similar to those of Ogopogo and Nessie that scientists have speculated they are members of an animal species that hasn’t been discovered—yet. Will you brave the waters to find out?
