North Dakota State University has been in-strumental in North Dakota’s development for more than a century.

As the state’s first land-grant university, it has a strong heritage of providing instruction, research and public service to North Dakota, the region, the nation, and the international community. With about 74,000 living alumni, NDSU has a well-deserved national reputation for a commitment to excellence.

With humble beginnings, NDSU was estab-lished in 1890. President Horace E. Stockbridge and five faculty members welcomed the first class of 30 students who attended a winter agricultural course. The construction of historic Old Main was completed in 1892.

Today, the university educates more than 14,400 students and has 900 professors, associate professors, assistant professors, instructors and lecturers. NDSU offers more than 100 baccalaureate majors, 46 doctoral programs, 66 master’s pro-grams, an educational specialist degree and nine certificate programs.

Instruction is offered through these academic units: College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources; College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Business; College of Engineering and Architecture; College of Human Development and Education; College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied Sciences; College of Science and Mathematics; College of University Studies; and College of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies.

The school’s educational opportunities attract students from across the nation and around the world. During the fall of 2010, students and gradu-ate students came to NDSU from 52 North Dakota counties and 42 states. NDSU has more than 1,300 international students from 89 foreign countries.

The NDSU’s primary academic campus includes 42 square blocks and 101 university build-ings, 12 non-NDSU buildings, eight leased buildings and 10 leased spaces, with building, personal and outdoor property with a total value of $838 million.

In all, NDSU is located on 18,746 acres of North Dakota land, which includes the main Agri-cultural Experiment Station at Fargo. There are 247 Agricultural Experiment Station buildings and stor-age facilities at the main station and eight research Extension centers across the state, and 18,488 acres dedicated to agricultural research.

Dedicated to outreach efforts, the NDSU Extension Service conducts a rigorous education program in agriculture, human development, nutrition and youth and community develop-ment through its county, area and state staff. The NDSU Extension Service had 590,103 face-to-face contacts across the state during the last fiscal year, including 23,455 youth who participated in 4-H programs and activities.

Why the Bison?North Dakota State University’s athletic teams

have progressed from the “Farmers” in the 1890s to the “Aggies” in the early 1900s, to “Bison,” North Dakota State’s current athletic symbol. It was developed by head football coach Stan Borleske in 1919 because he and members of the football team didn’t like being known as

the Aggies. Borleske wanted a strong and fierce mascot. The Bison was a logical choice. The

great animals once roamed the North Dakota prairie in vast numbers, and over the years Bison

athletic teams added an additional name, the “Thundering Herd.”

Dr. Dean L. Bresciani, President

When he came to NDSU in the summer of 2001, Gene Taylor inherited a department surrounded by a whirlwind of questions.

In his first year as the director of athletics at NDSU, Taylor was asked to spearhead a comprehensive study and evaluation of the Bison athletic department. He has guided the athletics program through the unpredictable waters of reclassification to NCAA Division I from Division II.

One of most important pieces of the transition was securing conference affiliations for all 16 sports. The Bison are currently members of The Summit League, Missouri Valley Football Conference and Western Wrestling Conference.

Taylor also played an instrumental part of forming the Great West Football Conference in February 2004, an affiliation that gave the Bison football program an immediate home in Division I. He served as chair of the coaches committee.

Also on the reclassification checklist: fundraising. Taylor spearheaded an increase in the Bison athletics budget, which has more than doubled from $5 million in his first year to almost $12.5 million for the 2008-09 season.

He was recognized for his success by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in June 2008. Taylor was one of 29 recipients of the AstroTurf AD of the Year award as the Football Championship Subdivision Central Region winner.

A student assistant to the associate athletic director in his undergraduate days at Arizona State University, Taylor came to NDSU after a 15-year stint at Navy (1986-2001) as an administrative assistant, assistant ticket manager, ticket manager, assistant athletic director for tickets and operations, and associate athletic director.

Taylor is a 1980 business management graduate of Arizona State, and he received his master’s degree in sports administration in 1985 from St. Thomas University in Florida.

He worked in the ticket office at Southern Methodist University in 1985-86 directly before joining the Naval Academy and was in the private restaurant business before that for five years. His tenure at Navy included serving as the commissioner of the five-team Collegiate Sprint Football League that includes Army, Navy, Penn, Princeton and Cornell.

Taylor and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of a daughter, Casey, and a son, Jared.

Lynn Dorn, Women’s Athletic Director Enthusiasm, innovation and hard work are the cornerstones to Lynn Dorn’s remarkable 34-year record at North Dakota State University. In Dorn’s tenure as the director of women’s athletics, the Bison women’s teams have seven national titles, 62 North Central Conference titles, 16 Summit League championships, 118 national appearances, seven conference all-sports trophies to their credit. Three Bison competitors have been named the Honda Broderick Division II Most Outstanding Female Athlete, five received the NCC’s Stan Marshall Award, and there have been 135 All-Americans in six sports since 1981. In the classroom, the student-athletes’ academic achievement mirrors their athletic excellence. Twenty-nine women have been selected for 46 CoSIDA Academic All-America® awards and 17 have earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

Dorn was named one of the five most influential people in Division II athletics by College Sports magazine in 1995, one of seven administrators of the year in 2002 by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, and was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches

Association Administrator of the Year in 1997. She sees her role as a facilitator who empowers coaches to use their individual skills while working within a framework of common goals and themes. Dorn received her bachelor’s degree from Bemidji State in 1972 and her master’s degree in physical education from Minnesota in 1977.

the SUMMit LeaGUe “Ascending” and “improving” are adjectives frequently used in media cov-erage of The Summit League as it continues a renaissance on the playing field and in the classroom. As The Summit League celebrates its 30th anniversary season as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, the level of performance and achievement among the 11 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes in 19 cham-pionship sports continues to grow. Headlining The Summit League’s most recent history were the additions of the University of South Dakota and the University of Nebraska Omaha to its membership. USD joined in 2009 and the 2011-12 academic year marks its first full year of league competition. UNO’s membership took effect on July 1, 2011, and it will begin league competition in 2012-13. Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its fifth year of rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all league student-athletes. The Summit League has a combined enrollment of more than 135,000 at 11 universities: IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), the University of Nebraska Omaha, North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. The league has one other associate member, Eastern Illinois University, which competes in swimming and diving. Southern Utah University will leave for the Big Sky Conference after the 2011-12 year. These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports, which include: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives automatic bids to the NCAA tournament in all applicable sports. Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League has had several transcen-dent moments on the national stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the first round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament on

its way to the Sweet 16. A decade later, Valparaiso captured the nation’s atten-tion when Bryce Drew hit “the shot” to defeat No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA first-round game and spark its Sweet 16 run. More recently, the Oral Roberts baseball program finished the 2004 campaign with a national ranking and became the first Summit League school to reach the NCAA Super Regionals in 2006. The league has produced five NCAA champions, four Olympic athletes, and several All-Americans in the sports of track and field, swimming and diving, and cross country. Numerous professionals and several draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball first-round picks, a pair of NBA first-rounders and one WNBA selection. Former Summit Leaguers Kevin Duckworth (NBA) and Kevin Seitzer (MLB) each were two-time all-stars during their professional careers. Recent and historical success coupled with an increased growth among its membership base gives The Summit League a promising future on the land-scape of college athletics.
