2011-12 SEASON RECAP: The Seawolves concluded the 2011-12 campaign with a 9-25-2 overall record and a 5-22-1 slate in league play, falling to eventual Frozen Four qualifier Minnesota in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs ... highlighting the season was a 3-2 win over then-No. 1 Minnesota Duluth, along with upsets of No. 6 Colorado College and No. 15 Michigan Tech ... the Seawolves were 4-1-1 in non-conference play, winning the Kendall Hockey Classic and Brice Alaska Goal Rush tournaments ... UAA also landed a program-high-tying 14 on the WCHA Academic All-Conference Team and six to the WCHA Scholar-Athlete Team.
2012-13 TEAM CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED: Head bench boss Dave Shy-iak announced that Chris Crowell will dress as ‘Captain’ for the Sea-wolves in 2012-13, while Matt Bailey will be the ‘Assistant Captain’ ... Crowell becomes the first stand-alone captain since Jared Tuton in 2009-10.
SENIOR SEND OFF: The Seawolves said goodbye to four seniors – Brad Gor-ham, Curtis Leinweber, Jade Portwood and Dusan Sidor – who played in their final collegiate game on March 11 at Minnesota in the WCHA First Round Playoffs ... the foursome dressed in their final home game on March 3 against Bemidji State ... combined, the four played in 343 games and posted 34 goals and 70 assists.
TEAM AWARDS: Sophomore Matt Bailey was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player on March 29 as UAA wrapped up the 2011-12 campaign with its annual banquet at the Anchorage Marriott Downtown ... the individual honors went to seniors Jade Portwood (Corner Man) and Dusan Sidor (Most Inspi-rational and Jack Peterson Student-Athlete), sophomore Chris Kamal (Leon Thompson Fan Favorite) and freshmen Derek Docken (Rookie of the Year) and Corbin Karl (Most Improved).
WCHA FIRST ROUND RECAP: The Seawolves’ season came to an end after Minnesota swept UAA, 2-1, 7-3, in the WCHA First Round Playoffs on March 10-11 at Mariucci Arena ... on March 10, the Golden Gophers took a two-goal lead on tallies from Erik Haula, before senior D Brad Gor-ham netted UAA’s lone goal in the final seconds of the middle frame ... on March 11, the Seawolves took a 3-1 lead with a pair of goals by sophomore F Matt Bailey and one by freshman F Scott Allen ... Minnesota then responded with two more tallies in the second and four in the third for the sweep.

Sidor joins former UAA netminder Jon Olthuis as the only Seawolves with three WCHA Student-Athlete honors.
WCHA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: UAA landed a program-high-tying 14 student-athletes to the men’s All-Western Collegiate Hockey As-sociation Academic Team ... earning the recognition for the third time of his career was senior Dusan Sidor ... claiming their second academic honor were juniors Chris Crowell, Alex Gellert and Scott Warner ... receiving the award for the first time were seniors Brad Gorham, Curtis Leinweber and Jade Portwood, juniors Tyler Currier and Daniel Naslund and sophomores Matt Bailey, Brett Cameron, Chris Kamal, Andrew Pickering and Quinn Sproule ... the 2008-09 UAA squad also had 14 student-athletes earning the recognition.

HEAD COACH DAVE SHYIAK 76-152-26 career record (7th Season) 50-126-20 WCHA record / 21-12-5 non-conference - Posted most wins in 2010-11 since joining the league and second-best conference record, while advancing to the WCHA Final Five. - Fourth head coach in program history & second most winningest coach in program history. - Led UAA to a third-straight Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup title in 2008-09. - Helped guide NMU to seven 20-win seasons, six Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament berths and one NCAA Tournament appearance. - Wildcats averaged over 20 wins a season under Shyiak’s tenure. - Recorded an overall mark of 213-174-40 as an assistant coach at NMU (10 seasons) - Served as head coach of the North American Select Team in 2000 and 2001, guiding the squad to silver- medal finishes both seasons at the World “Junior A” Hockey Tournament - Co-Captain of NMU’s 1991 NCAA Championship team that eliminated UAA from the Quarterfinals.

high 8 power-play tallies ... at the completion of 36 games, UAA was outshot by opponents, 1010-901, but won the battle of the shots in the third (305-300) and overtime (12-7) … UAA posted 24 goals in the first period, 40 in the second, 19 in the third and two in OT for a combined 85 goals … the Seawolves allowed 134 goals ... for special teams, UAA posted 25 power-play goals to opponents’ 28, and two shorthanded strikes to opponents’ five ... in the WCHA overall stats, UAA ranked 5th on the penalty kill (81.1), 8th in penalty minutes (13.5), 10th on the power play (19.5) and 12th in scoring offense (2.36) and scoring defense (3.72) ... the Seawolves posted a season-high 17 points on Oct. 15 against Mercyhurst in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush, including a season-high-tying 6 goals ... Bailey finished the season tied in points with senior F/D Curtis Leinweber ... Leinweber concluded his collegiate career with nine goals, eight assists and three power-play goals ... Leinweber needed just one more goal to double his goal total from his first three seasons as a Seawolf ... also wrapping up his college career were seniors F Jade Portwood, D Brad Gorham and G Dusan Sidor ...
