Game 17 at Evansville - Jan. 21, 2012 3

Head Coach Nyla MillesonNyla Milleson (Kansas State, ’85) is in her fifth sea-son as the head coach at Missouri State with a 77-67 mark as the Lady Bears’ mentor and an overall record of 262-103 in 12 years as a collegiate head coach. Prior to taking the reins of the MSU program, the Goodland, Kan., native guided Drury Univer-sity to a 185-36 record in seven seasons, high-lighted by a national runner-up finish in 2003-04. In all, the Lady Panthers made five NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, advancing to the Sweet 16 in three of those years. Milleson was honored as Heartland Conference Coach of the Year three times, as Drury won six conference titles in all.

Last Time OutSouthern Illinois used a 20-3 second-half run to turn an eight-point deficit into a nine-point lead and held off Missouri State late to earn a 78-72 victory over the Lady Bears and snap a 24-game Missouri Valley Conference losing streak Thursday at SIU Arena. Missouri State’s (10-6, 3-3) three-point halftime lead had been cut to one at 48-47 when Christiana Shorter converted a three-point play, Jaleshia Roberson hit two free throws and Lacey Boshe scored a putback layup for a 7-0 run and 55-47 lead with 12:07 remaining. The Salukis (4-13, 1-6) took over from there, going on an 11-0 run in just 2:07 of game time to lead 58-55 and extending the run to 20-3 and their lead to 67-58 with 5:18 left to play. Shorter hit four consecutive free throws to pull MSU within 67-62 and Teri Oliver answered with her school-record seventh three-pointer to make it 70-62. Missouri State scratched and clawed, eventually closing to within one possession on Karly Buer’s bucket with 56 seconds left that made it 75-72, but SIU was bailed out by an MSU foul to end the next possession and made two free throws that sealed it. The Lady Bears shot just 9-of-31 in the second half and 39 percent in the game, losing for the first time this season when scoring 70 points. SIU shot 48 percent for the game and buried 11 three-pointers while MSU went 0-for-11 from beyond the arc. Oliver led all scorers with 28 points, going 7-for-8 from three-point land. Shorter scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her second consecutive double-dou-ble, while Casey Garrison scored 20 with eight rebounds and Buer added a season-best 10 points. Missouri State led the rebounding battle 44-41, including 21 offensive boards, and committed 16 turnovers to 23 for the Salukis. Shorter and Oliver battled to the first media timeout, each scoring six points with Shorter adding five early rebounds as the Salukis led 9-7. Southern Illinois scored four straight out of the timeout to lead 13-7 and Garrison hit a long two-pointer at the 11:54 mark for a 15-15 tie. Oliver drained her third and fourth treys of the half to help SIU lead 21-17, and Garrison again scored for the tie at 23-all before Karly Buer gave the Lady Bears their first lead since 4-3 with a bucket for a 25-23 advantage. The Salukis briefly regained the lead with a triple before Shorter’s layup sparked a 10-0 Missouri State run that saw four different players score over the next 2:43 for a 35-26 advantage. SIU responded with a 7-1 run to close the gap to 36-33 with 1:34 left in the half, and Oliver buried a fifth three-pointer with 1:13 on the clock for a 38-36 score in favor of the Lady Bears. MSU hit two free throw to one for SIU in the final minute for a 40-37 halftime lead. The Lady Bears withstood 7-of-11 three-point shooting by the Salukis in the first half compared to 0-for-4 themselves by forcing 13 turnovers and shooting 18-of-38 overall.

Millenium ClubThe Lady Bears have three active players among the school’s all-time 1,000-point scor-ers, with the potential for one more this season. Senior Jasmine Malone (878) also has a shot at 1,000 by the end of the season.

Game 17 at Evansville - Jan. 21, 2012 4

MSU has scored 100 points now 16 times in its history, with 104 tying for the No. 9 total. Missouri State’s 64 first-half points served as a JQH Arena record and are two points shy of what is believed to be the school record for points in a half as MSU scored 66 against Davidson in 1998.

Players of the WeekJaleshia Roberson became Missouri State’s first MVC Player of the Week Jan. 9 after averaging 23.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in wins over Creighton and Drake. Roberson’s 47 points came on just 20 field goal attempts as she shot 14-20 overall, 10-16 from three and 9-10 from the foul line.

MSU Peaks in The ValleyThe Lady Bears are 237-107 all-time in MVC play with a 139-32 home record against league foes. Missouri State has won at least a share of 11 regular-season titles and nine conference tournaments since the 1989-90 season. MSU has played in 11 of the 19 Valley tournament championship games and 13 of the 26 title games since the in-ception of the Gateway Conference Tournament in 1983.

Missouri State All-TimeMissouri State is in its 43rd season of women’s collegiate basketball and has an all-time record of 730-503 (.592). MSU began formal competition in 1969 and, with its 24-11 mark last year, secured its 28th winning season. The Lady Bears have made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by Final Four trips in 1992 and 2001 to go along with a Sweet 16 appearance in 1993. The Lady Bears are in their 30th NCAA Division I season and 20th MVC year. MSU was in AIAW competition on the state, regional and national levels through the 1981-82 season, moved to Division I and Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference play in 1982-83 and started MVC competition in 1992-93 when the Gateway merged with The Valley.

Preseason FavoritesFor the second consecutive season, the Lady Bears will begin a season as the Missouri Valley Conference’s preseason favorite. MSU was tabbed to win the conference title by the league’s head coaches, media representatives with 36 if a possible 40 first-place votes. Additionally, senior guard Casey Gar-rison was voted the preseason Jackie Stiles Player of the Year and was joined on the all-conference squad by junior for-ward Christiana Shorter.

Challenging StartMissouri State opened the season against three schools that made the NCAA Tourna-ment in 2011. Louisiana Tech (28), Louisville (26) and Kansas State (46) also finished last year with RPIs of 46 or better. Missouri State’s fourth and fifth opponents, Oral Roberts and Arkansas-Little Rock, made the WNIT and NCAA fields, respectively, last season, and ETSU was MSU’s first opponent this season that did not play in the postseason a year ago. A Dec. 8 trip to Oklahoma State made it six 2011 postseason squads in its MSU’s seven games. MSU’s first seven games were also against teams that had winning records in 2010-11, and the Lady Bears closed last season with three such games to begin what turned out to be a 10-game streak against winning teams from last season.

“Q” RatingAfter compiling a 325-108 record in Hammons Student Center over its 32-year stint as home of Missouri State basketball, the Lady Bears posted a 13-5 home mark last season. The “Q” is the fourth regular home of Missouri State women’s basketball in the four-decade history of the program. The Lady Bears utilized both McDonald Arena and the Greenwood Laboratory School gym from 1969 until Hammons Student Center opened in 1976. MSU continued to play some of its home games at McDonald through the 1979-80 season. The Lady Bears dropped their first game at Hammons to Iowa State by an 81-62 score on Dec. 11, 1976. The Lady Bears’ new home was made possible by a $30 million gift from MSU alum-nus John Q. Hammons and will feature seating for more than 11,000 fans, 24 suites, the PRIME Overtime Club and the Missouri State University Hall of Fame and Legacy of Competition.
