Donna's Day:

Creative Family Funby Donna Erickson

Tips to Recycle the Garage-Sale WayPlanning and running a family garage sale can be more

than a moneymaking venture for you and your kids. Dol-lars might be an incentive for parting with outgrown toys, books and clothes, but your kids also will be reaping the benets of hands-on experience in marketing, merchandis-ing and sales.

Here are some tips to recycle and turn your castoffs totreasures the garage-sale way:

Get Ready:• Set aside time before the sale to help your kids clear

the clutter and sort through books, toys, DVDs and clothes.Wash items that are soiled, and put jackets, shirts and blous-es on hangers to show off the merchandise. People don’tlike to dig in piles of stuff. If a toy has small parts, corral the pieces, put them in a small bag and tape the bag to the toy.

• Put price stickers on items and price to sell.• Although you might advertise the sale in the news-

paper and on websites like craigslist, your kids can make

their own iers to distribute to neighbors to publicize theitems they are selling.

Eye-Catchers:• Make your sale “an experience” with small touches.

Cover tables with bright fabric, hang a mirror near clothingand hats, and play music on a DVD player. If your gardenis in full bloom, ll jars with owers and sell by the stem.

• Draw in shoppers with a big poster with “ExtraordinaryKids Stuff” printed in large letters in the kids’ department.

• Set out a table or box of “free stuff.” You’ll be sur - prised to see what people will take for free!

• By far, snacks are a super draw. Sell coffee and cold beverages. And who can refuse buying a cookie or sweetroll while strolling around your sale?

Selling:

• Find a cash box and be sure someone is always incharge of it throughout the day.

• Be prepared to bargain, especially for bikes, scootersand skates.

• At the end of the sale, gather leftover items in goodcondition, remove the stickers and donate to a nonprotorganization.

Itchy Skin Plagues Pot-Bellied Pigs

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My pot-bellied pigs, “Pen-

ny” and “Norman,” again lost their hair very early this

spring, when it was still very cold. Their skin was ex-tremely itchy and very cracked and dry-looking. I con-

tacted many vets, Humane Societies and others concer n-ing this never-ending issue. Many told me that hair loss in

pot-bellied pigs is normal, and there was nothing I coulddo. That was not good enough for me.   Now I think I found something that is helping. I’ve beenadding safower oil in with their food pellets – about a ta- blespoon each feeding. They have not grown back any hair,

since I just started this about three weeks ago. But I can tellthey don’t look as dry and they’re not scratching as much.

I give safower oil to my dogs and cats during the win-ter while our wood stove is operating, as they tend to get

dry, aky skin. The oil makes their fur very shiny. So Ithought I would try it on my piggies. I hope this will help

others who are going through this. Good luck! –  Diane at  Little Moose Farm  DEAR DIANE: Skin problems and hair loss in pot-bel-lied pigs is indeed very common, but troubling for own-

ers. Pot-bellied pigs can “blow their coats” routinely after reaching about two years of age, and their skin can be dryduring the period before their hair grows back. However, other problems can sometimes cause hair loss and dry, cracked skin as well, so it’s always good to check with thevet when hair loss occurs.

Many experts recommend adding a cod liver oil or shoil supplement to the pigs’ food, and safower oil may bea good alternative as well. This can help improve their dryskin while waiting for their coats to regrow.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Music Never Stopped” (PG) – This is an uplift-

ing family drama for people who really love their music. After being separated for 20 years, Henry Sawyer (J.K.Simmons) is reunited with his son Gabriel (Lou Taylor Pucci) under grim circumstances -- Gabriel has a braintumor that has robbed him of his ability to form newmemories. Determined to have a real conversation withhis son, Henry nds a therapist who discovers that musiccan awaken something in Gabriel and give him a chanceto have meaningful conversations again.

Those who can connect to the music or the strainedrelationship will be taken on a dramatic ride, piloted byan astounding performance by J.K. Simmons – an actor who you have doubtlessly seen and heard in the pastdecade, but never knew his name or that he could handlea leading role so well.

“Stakeland” (R) – One might take a brief look at this

post-apocalyptic horror lm and think it a forgettableclone of “I Am Legend,” but that would be dead wrong.“Stakeland” is the story of survivors and vamp-huntersin the wastelands of America after a vampire epidemichas left human society scattered and living in tiny, frightened rural clusters. The performances, atmosphere

J.K. Simmons, Lou Taylor Pucci

and suspense bring a nightmare vision to life withoutoverplaying the violence and gore. Monster-fans whowant to see vampires return to their virulent, nonromantic blood-frenzied glory will ock to this movie like a swarmof nocturnal predators descending on a helpless village.  “Exporting Raymond” (PG) – This goofy light-hearted documentary follows Phil Rosenthal, creator of TV’s “Everybody Loves Raymond,” as he travels toMoscow to aid in the production of Russia’s attempt to produce its own version, “Everybody Loves Kostya.”Dry humor is one of those things that’s highly culture-

sensitive, as Rosenthal quickly nds out when thecomedy he helped create is wildly and hilariously mis-interpreted every step of the way. The comedy sparksying away from the culture clash are funnier thanmost sitcom episodes.

Brain Excercises

There’s more to being connected to the Internet thanchecking email and reading out-of-state newspapers.

With the right software, we can exercise our brains.CogniFit Personal Coach is an online program geared

to helping seniors improve memory, stay alert, multi-task and think faster. There’s nothing to download to your computer. The whole program is online, and you onlyneed to sign up and log in. After an initial assessment,it keeps track of your progress as you go step-by-stepthrough more then 100 different levels.

Among the many areas it covers are auditory short-term memory, spatial perception, visual scanning, eye-hand coordination and response time.

Getting benets from the program only takes one hour a week, broken into three 20-minute sessions. If youdon’t have a computer, your program can be done on afriend’s computer or even at the library, since your sign-on information is secure.CogniFit won the 2009 International Council on ActiveAging award for creative products aimed at seniors. The

program costs $14.95 per month. Log on and see how itworks at www.cognit.com. If in doubt about the valueof the training, click the Scientic Validation tab and look through the studies.

If you’re uncertain about computer use, those whouse computer for any amount of time are 44 percent lesslikely to have mild cognitive impairment. Add in exer -cise, and you can delay (or even prevent) mental decline.

Prefer to work with pencil and paper? Pick up a Gradu-

ate Record Exam (GRE) study guide at the bookstore. Each general test book has practice questions on a varietyof topics such as math, vocabulary, reading comprehen-sion. Talk about brain stretchers!
