BIOGRAPHIESARSENI ARSOV (Normanno, Tenor) is a graduate

of the Sofia Conservatory of Music. He has performed with Opera companies in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe for more than 20 years. Arsov has been a guest singer with Teatro Lirico D’Europa on tours worldwide since 1990.

PLAMEN DIMITROV (Lord Enrico Ashton, Bari-tone) performed various roles with Teatro Lirico D’Europa’s U.S. tours for the last five seasons, including Schaunard in La Bohème, Morales in Carmen, Ping in Turandot, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Giorgio Germont in La Traviata, the title role in Rigoletto, and Escamillo in Carmen. WILLIAM POWERS (Raimondo Bidebent, Bass-

Baritone) made his New York City Opera debut in 1972 and, since then, has performed more than 100 Operatic roles throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. While the stylistic range of his portrayals spans from Renais-sance to Contemporary, Powers has earned the reputation as a “heavy” due to the dark, penetrating color of his voice. His teachers and mentors, George London and Norman Treigle, have contributed to the dramatic intensity of his delivery. Powers created many new roles for world premieres and performed in important revivals, including The Great Gatsby, Paradise Lost, Wuthering Heights, Holy Blood and Crescent Moon, and Sestina D’autunno. Powers has sung the roles of Celio in The Love of Three Oranges and performed in Gaetano Donizetti’s rarely heard Betly and the French ver-sion of La Favorite for the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Opéra Comique in Paris. Powers’ creations include the Italian version of Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District for the Spoleto Festival and the American premiere of George Frid-

eric Handel’s Poro, re delle Indie for The Kennedy Center’s Handel Festival. In 2000, Powers released a solo CD, Rogues and Villains, followed by The Worst of William Powers, which contains several arias from the characters Basilio, Mustafa, Don Magnifico, Iago, Pizzaro, Alvise, and Boris Godunov. Powers has also portrayed the villains Mephistopheles, Bertram, Mefisto, Reverend Blitch, Gianni Schicchi, and Falstaff. The Bass-baritone has performed symphonic rep-ertoire, including Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Missa Solemnis, and the requiems of Guiseppi Verdi, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonín Dvořák, Johannes Brahms, and Gabriel Fauré. These standards are joined by the Contemporary works of William Schuman and Ned Rorem, in conjunction with the Chicago, St. Louis, Pitts-burgh, Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Paris, Cologne, Strasbourg, Prague, Amsterdam, and Vienna Symphony orchestras. GIORGIO LALOV (Artistic/Stage Director, Sets, and Costumes) is the co-founder of Teatro Lirico D’Europa and the company’s current general manager and artis-tic director. Lalov was born in Telesh, Bulgaria, in 1958. His father Lalo, a doctor, and his mother Stoiyanka, an elementary-school teacher and Bulgarian Folk singer, were educated patrons of the arts. When his father died, Lalov was only 9 years old. Because he was an excellent student, he was accepted to an elite boarding school in Bulgaria where all the lessons were taught in French. When he graduated from high school in 1976, he was fluent in French and English. That year, he entered the Bulgarian National Academy of Music and went on tour throughout Italy with a choir from the university. While in Milan, he auditioned for the famous international School for Young Opera Singers at La Scala. He was accepted and went on to make his Operatic debut at La Scala at the age of 25. After living in Italy for a short time, Lalov became fluent in Italian. In 1986 while on tour with an Opera company in France, he met his future business partner, Yves Josse, a former Ballet dancer who was booking Opera and Ballet tours. The two decided to collaborate. By 1988 Josse and Lalov were working on what was to become the most success-ful Opera touring company in Europe. At the time of Josse’s death in 1995, Teatro Lirico D’Europa was averaging more than 250 performances a season throughout Europe. In 1990, Lalov established the Sofia Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Teatro Lirico D’Europa embarked on its first major U.S. tour in 2000.

TEATRO LIRICO D’EUROPA, the European Opera touring company formed in 1988 by former Bulgarian Opera singer Giorgio Lalov, has completed more than 3,000 perfor-mances worldwide, including seven seasons of U.S. tours. The popular company embarks on its 12th season of U.S. tours in 2010-2011 with 70 performances of several full-scale Operas, including Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Turandot, and Lucia di Lammermoor. Soloists for the productions were chosen from auditions held in major cities and countries around the world, including Moscow, New York, Prague, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Bratislava, and Sofia. n

SYNOPSIS

In a feud between the Scottish families of Ravenswood and Lammermoor, Enrico Ashton of Lammermoor wrongfully holds the estates of Edgardo Ravenswood. In addition, Enrico’s political activity against the king has placed him in a perilous situation, and he has resolved to reestablish his family’s position by marrying his sister Lucia to Lord Arturo Bucklaw.

ACT I

Normanno orders his henchmen to discover the identity of the man whom Lucia is secretly meeting each day before dawn. Enrico is frustrated because he cannot persuade his sister to accept a marriage that will save him politically, and Normanno

shares his suspicions concerning Lucia’s lover. Enrico’s outburst is interrupted by the return of his men confirming that Lucia’s lover is, in fact, his enemy Edgardo.

Lucia awaits Edgardo in the woods by a fountain whose legend of a bloody phantom alternately fascinates and repels her. Edgardo arrives with the news that he must leave for France. He tells Lucia that before departing, he wishes to ask Enrico for

her hand in marriage. Terrified of her brother’s reaction, Lucia begs him not to. She tries to calm him when he renews his vows of vengeance upon her family. They solemnly pledge their troth by exchanging rings and vows of eternal fidelity.

ACT II

In his fury at his sister’s betrayal, Enrico has concluded marriage preparations for the union of his sister with Arturo. Despite intercepting the letters between the lovers, Enrico has failed to secure Lucia’s consent to this arranged marriage. Lucia

remains obstinate even when presented with a letter, forged in Edgardo’s handwriting, announcing his marriage to another woman. Enrico explodes in rage against his sister. At Raimondo’s fervent pleading, the exhausted Lucia finally gives in.

The wedding party has assembled and Lucia has scarcely signed the marriage contract when Edgardo bursts into the castle demanding an explanation. Upon seeing the contract with Lucia’s signature, he curses her and her family forever.

Enrico triumphantly places his sister’s hand in Arturo’s.

ACT III

In a tower of Edgardo’s gloomy castle, Enrico arrives at night to challenge him to a duel the next morning.

The wedding celebration is in progress when Raimondo brings the terrible news that Lucia has slain her bridegroom and has gone mad. In her delirium, Lucia wanders into the hall and imagines a wedding ceremony with her beloved Edgardo. Enrico

returns and finds his sister insane. He suffers remorse as she loses all reason and begs Edgardo to pray at her tomb.

Unaware of all that has happened, Edgardo imagines Lucia’s happiness with Arturo and berates her for her infidelity. A party of guests leaving the castle brings word of Lucia’s madness. As he sets off to see her one last time, Raimondo stops him with

the news of Lucia’s death. In his grief, Edgardo stabs himself with the hopes of being reunited with Lucia in heaven.

BOBBY VINTON

Sunday, November 7, 2010, 3:00 PM

There will be one 20-minute intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.

BIOGRAPHYAs the child of a bandleader father, BOBBY VINTON

showed an early interest in Big Band music. A natural per-former, Vinton played the saxophone, clarinet, piano, and trumpet. During a stint in the army, he played the trumpet in a military band. When he left the military, Vinton scored a contract with Epic, where he was managed by Allen Klein, who later led the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to fame.

Between 1962 and 1972, Vinton delivered 30 songs that made the Top 40. He had more No. One songs than any other male vocalist, including Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Cited by Billboard for his “sentimental balladeer-ing,” Vinton has created a legacy brimming with hits that include Roses Are Red; Blue Velvet; and Mr. Lonely, a song he co-wrote with Gene Allan.

When the British Invasion swept the United States in

the mid-1960s, bringing with it the Beatles, Vinton firmly held on to the music charts with Please Love Me Forever, the No. One tune I Love How You Love Me, and his version of Sealed With a Kiss.

Vinton’s romantic songs greatly appealed to young fans, but he was able to adjust his style to impress adult au-diences as well. His No. One smash hit My Melody of Love, a tribute to his Polish heritage, paved the way for The Bobby Vinton Variety Show, which aired in more than 140 cities throughout the United States and Canada. Dubbed “The Polish Prince,” Vinton credits his mother for inspiring the tune, which features Polish lyrics. The Duquesne University alumnus was named a musical ambassador to Poland and he traveled there frequently to perform. n

BIOGRAPHIESB.J. THOMAS is known for his iconic Gold hits

(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song, I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, and Hooked on a Feeling. In the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sun-dance Kid, Thomas performed the Burt Bacharach/Hal David song Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head, which soared to the No. One spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The single became Thomas’ third Gold record. Thomas scored a long string of successes, which includes Rock and Roll Lullaby; No Love; Everybody’s Out of Town; Mighty Clouds of Joy; and I Just Can’t Help Believing, which was covered by Elvis Presley.

One of the founding members and former lead vocalist of the legendary Three Dog Night, CHUCK NEGRON mesmerized fans with his vocals on One, Easy to Be Hard, Old Fashioned Love Song, and the Grammy-nominated Joy to the World. In an era when Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, and Motown were competing for chart position, Negron helped Three Dog Night dominate with record sales surpassing 50 million by 1975. Negron has garnered widespread acclaim for his solo albums Am I Still in Your Heart, Long Road Back, and his double CD set, Chuck Negron – Live in Concert.

FLORENCE LaRUE & THE 5TH DIMENSION won acclaim, six Grammy awards, and entranced fans with what the Los Angeles Times hailed as “rich, soar-ing harmonies.” With its cherished classics Up, Up and Away and Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In from the hit musi-cal Hair, the group’s meteoric rise to the top included a stint with the late legend Ray Charles. The 5th Dimen-sion’s vocal flexibility – evident in the hits Wedding Bell Blues, Stoned Soul Picnic, One Less Bell to Answer, and (Last Night) I Didn’t Get to Sleep at All – garnered it a steady presence on the music charts and scored a 2002 induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. n

Saturday, November 13, 2010, 8:00 PM

This performance will not include an intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.

BIOGRAPHYAn ardent music lover and guitarist since his early

teens, ROBERT CRAY formed his own band in 1974. The group began by performing in West Coast college towns. After a few years of regional success, the band scored a con-tract with Mercury Records in 1982, and Strong Persuader soon followed. The record’s success boosted Cray’s status and name recognition, leading to career-making gigs with A-list musicians like Grammy winners Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, the Eurythmics, and B.B. King.

By the late ’80s, Cray and his band’s stature was quick-ly on the rise, with a Grammy triumph for Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, the “Best Contemporary Blues Recording” that rocked the music charts. The next decade kept the group busy, with a celebrated tour in Russia and a series of smash releases, including Midnight Stroll, I Was Warned, Shame + a Sin, and Some Rainy Morning. In 1996, Cray picked up another Grammy for his contribution on SRV Shuffle, a track on the A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan album, which featured various performers, including Clapton, King, Art Neville, Dr. John, Bonnie Raitt, and Buddy Guy.

By the late ’90s, it was time to hit the road again. The band packed its bags and toured the United States with King and Europe with Clapton. It also toured New Zealand and Australia. In 1999, Cray took home his fifth Grammy with the “Best Contemporary Blues Album” Take Your Shoes Off. The ensuing years brought a string of well-received releases, including Time Will Tell and Shoulda Been Home, garnering more applause for the group and further securing its role in music history. In 2009, Cray’s This Time album garnered a Grammy nomination. His 2010 Cookin’ in Mobile shows “a little more grit, grease, and fire,” says the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Cray’s longevity in the fickle Pop and Blues arenas is largely attributed to his guitar prowess and bold, brassy bursts of Southern Soul. The singer-songwriter’s talent and appeal have also attracted Hollywood’s attention, leading to several appearances on Saturday Night Live, Late Night With David Letterman, The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, and 1978’s Animal House, in which Cray plays a bassist in the movie’s fictional band Otis Day and the Knights. n

CLEAN COMEDY CAVALCADEFeaturing

NORM CROSBY, RONN LUCAS,

DALE GONYEA,and

JEFF CIVILLICO

Sunday, November 14, 2010, 3:00 PM

There will be one 20-minute intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.

BIOGRAPHIES“The Master of Malaprop,” NORM CROSBY is cel-

ebrated for his humorous wordplay routines. His signature shtick – a confused-sounding banter, filled with one mala-propism after another – has earned Crosby the respect most comedians hope for, but few can actually attain. The Las Vegas Review-Journal noted, “[He] can walk out on any given stage, a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye, and instantly you know you’re in for a good time.”

Called “The World’s Best Ventriloquist” by The New York Times, RONN LUCAS has long been a fixture on the Las Vegas strip. “His ability to make anything appear to speak, from a sock to an unborn child, is as magical as any sleight-of-hand trick,” hailed the Las Vegas Sun. With his sidekick puppets – Buffalo Billy (who thinks he is a ladies’ man) and Scorch (the lovable dragon teenager) – Lucas juggles audience participation, puppetry, vocal gymnastics, and stand-up comedy for an improvisational show that has

delighted fans and critics worldwide. Grammy-nominated comic-musician DALE GONYEA

returns to the CCPA, serving up his trademark clever ditties that prompted the Los Angeles Times to christen him “heir to the piano-comedy throne.” With his live appearances at Las Vegas Caesar’s Palace, Trump Castle, and Manhattan’s Town Hall, Gonyea has enthralled audiences with a unique brand of humor enhanced by his piano mastery.

JEFF CIVILLICO delights fans and critics with his blend of comedy, juggling, and audience participation. His exuberant brand of comedy is enhanced with athletics to produce an unforgettable show he calls “Comedy in Ac-tion.” His credits on the Las Vegas strip include V: The Ultimate Variety Show, Amazed, Nathan Burton, and The Improv at Harrah’s. Civillico holds a world record for bungee jumping on his unicycle off a cliff in New Zealand. n

A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMASFeaturing the

DAVID BENOIT TRIOand the

ASIA AMERICA YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Friday, December 3, 2010, 8:00 PM

This performance will not include an intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.

BIOGRAPHIESA CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS, which fea-

tures the DAVID BENOIT TRIO and the Asia America Youth Orchestra, is a heartfelt tribute to the late Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, developed by Contemporary Jazz pianist-composer-conductor David Benoit.

Five-time Grammy nominee Benoit – best known for Snap!, his instrumental hit from the award-winning album Fuzzy Logic – incorporates various musical genres to create this inspirational show. The array of music – including Jazz, R&B, and Classical – combines to define the Peanuts’ signa-ture sound. The tribute has been a huge hit with fans of the popular comic strip and its characters.

Benoit, who was voted “Keyboardist of the Year” in 2000 and 2001 by the Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards, has ar-ranged, conducted, and played for popular Pop and Jazz per-formers, including vocalist Patti Austin, saxophonist Dave Koz, singer Faith Hill, Grammy nominee Brian McKnight, and singers-songwriters Kenny Loggins and Kenny Rankin.

Benoit paid homage to one of his chief influences – the legendary Leonard Bernstein – with the critically acclaimed production The Songs of West Side Story.

Under Benoit’s guidance, the ASIA AMERICA YOUTH ORCHESTRA strives to open artistic and cul-tural borders by fusing the music of the East and the West and combining Classical and Jazz performances. Founded in 2001 by Benoit, the ensemble provides opportunities for young musicians – ages 12 to 18 – to play in a professional-level orchestra. Students, who are encouraged to write original compositions for the orchestra, perform a wide array of musical repertoire that introduces traditional Asian instruments into traditional Western Classical performances in very non-traditional approaches.

Also featured is the LUNADA BAY ELEMEN-TARY SCHOOL CHOIR from the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. n

for numerous international symphony orchestras. Pursuing compositions worthy of more appreciation for Mariachi, Maestro Hernández has enlightened audiences by producing rich, cultural performances world over. BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY HOLIDAY SHOW

Thursday, December 9, 2010, 8:00 PM

This performance will not include an intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.

BIOGRAPHYWith its breakthrough role in the 1996 hit comedy

Swingers, BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY (BBVD) intoxi-cated audiences and cast a spell on the American contem-porary Swing scene, quickly becoming one of the genre’s hottest acts. The band’s performance in the movie led to a recording contract for the ensemble’s first album, the Grammy-nominated Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, which reached certified Gold status. The band is noted for its high-octane performances and the hits Go Daddy-O, You & Me & the Bottle Makes Three Tonight (Baby), and Mr. Pinstripe Suit.

The troupe followed up its first hit album with This Beautiful Life, which showcased classics such as Ol’ Mac-Donald and Big and Bad. BBVD’s 2004 album Everything You Want for Christmas received glowing reviews from Rolling

Stone, which praised the group for infusing “its retro hep-cat cool with a dose of Yule spirit.” The magazine cited the al-bum’s hit singles, in particular Blue Christmas for its “dance-hall flair”; and Jingle Bells (Cha Cha) and Party for Santa, both flavored with “a Latin accent, which adds sizzle to the mix.” Rolling Stone called BBVD’s version of We Three Kings “a warm, brass-only arrangement” and hailed the group’s “sashaying sax and percussion rendition of Jingle Bells.”

After more than a decade of nonstop touring, BBVD continues to treat Swing music fans to its stirring concoc-tion of brassy swinging horns, crooning vocals, and wild Jazz rhythms. The band members, who are often seen sporting their “uniform” of fedoras and classic gentlemanly suits, consistently pack concert halls around the country. n

OAK RIDGE BOYSTHE BOYS ARE BACK

FOR CHRISTMAS

Friday, December 10, 2010, 8:00 PM

There will be one 20-minute intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.

BIOGRAPHYAs a Gospel quartet, THE OAK RIDGE BOYS gar-

nered four Grammys for Just a Little Talk With Jesus, Where the Soul Never Dies, The Baptism of Jesse Taylor, and Talk About the Good Times.

In the late 1970s, The Oak Ridge Boys modernized its sound and successfully transitioned to the Country music realm, eventually landing in the Pop mainstream. The New York Times called the group “a singular phenomenon … that has broken several barriers” because each of the group’s crossovers resulted in greater acclaim, more fans, and bigger hits.

The Oak Ridge Boys was a fixture on the Country music charts, producing 25 Top 10 singles, including the No. One songs I’ll Be True to You, This Crazy Love, and Bob-bie Sue. In 1981, the band won a Grammy for the Country tune Elvira. Even as the group incorporated Pop music into its style, The Oak Ridge Boys’ core sound remained deeply rooted in Country Gospel harmony. The late ’80s and early ’90s brought more successes, including the No. One hits It

Takes a Little Rain (To Make Love Grow), Gonna Take a Lot of River, No Matter How High, and the Top 10 song Lucky Moon.

As impressive as its succession of hits is the ensemble’s long list of accolades, which includes three “Group of the Year” honors from the Country Music Association; two “Best Vocal Group” awards from the Academy of Country Music; the “Breakthrough Award” and four “Number One Country Group” trophies from Billboard; and distinctions from the American Music Awards. The band was inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001.

The quartet’s current members include lead singer Duane “Ace” Allen, tenor Joe Bonsall, baritone William Lee Golden, and bass vocalist Richard Sterban. The Oak Ridge Boys has been a tireless advocate of charitable and civic causes, including the Boy Scouts of America, the Na-tional Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse, and Feed the Children. n

CCPA SEASON SCHEDULE TO CHANGE IN 2011-2012

Starting next season, the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) will implement a change to future CCPA performance schedules that will allow the theater to present more of your favorite entertainers.

The CCPA’s 2011-2012 Season will consist of two four-month “mini-seasons.” The first will run from July 2011 through early November 2011. The second will run from December 2011 through the end of March 2012.

Starting the CCPA season in July will expand the range of popular performer options available to the theater. Many of the most popular entertainers the CCPA has presented have greater touring availability during this time. This modified schedule also will allow the CCPA to provide greater availability for special event requests that it receives throughout the year, but has previously been unable to accommodate.

Reminders of this scheduling change will be made throughout the current season. The 2011-2012 Series Subscription and Season Package Brochure will be mailed in March 2011 instead of May, and the CCPA’s usual ticketing procedures will be adjusted accordingly. The City of Cerritos and the CCPA look forward to seeing you often at the theater for performances in this and future seasons.
