In his third season as the head coach of the C.W. Post

women’s soccer team, Mark Dawson looks to keep the Pioneers

fi rmly entrenched as one of the top teams in both the East Coast

Conference as well as the entire East Region, furthering the suc-

cess that the program has enjoyed since its inception in 1994.

Ending 2009 with a 12-6-1 record, Dawson’s sqaud earned

its second consecutive ECC tournament berth under his guid-

ance, falling just short of returning to the NCAA East Regional.

During his debut season at the helm, Dawson guided the

Pioneers to their second consecutive East Coast Conference

Championship and appearance in the NCAA Division II North-

east Regional. With a record of 17-3-1 last season, Dawson and

the Pioneers tied the program record for wins, previously set

during the 2007 season. For his eff orts, Dawson was selected as

the 2008 ECC Coach off the Year.

As an assistant in 2005, Dawson helped the team to their

fi rst-ever NYCAC tournament championship, defeating confer-

ence rival Adelphi and 10th ranked New Haven. Th e Pioneers

advanced to the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Champi-

onship tournament, marking the fi rst time the Pioneers had

reached the national tourney since 1999.

Dawson has extensive knowledge of soccer in the Northeast

Region, both with the C.W. Post program, and with the former

Long Island University – Southampton College. He originally

joined the Pioneers after a seven-year stint at Southampton Col-

lege, where he was the head coach of the women’s program.

He led the Colonials to an 80-50-6 mark during that time

span, as well as a No. 3 national ranking in the 2004 campaign

when Southampton played host to the NCAA Division II Cham-

pionship’s Northeast Regional.

A two-time NYCAC Coach of the Year (2001, ‘04), Dawson

also received Northeast Region Coach of the Year accolades from

the NSCAA in his fi nal season with the program.

Th e Mastic, N.Y. resident also served as an assistant coach

with Southampton’s men’s soccer program from 1996-2004,

helping the Colonials to the “round of eight” in an NCAA Divi-

sion II Championship tournament.

Since 2004, Dawson has also coached in the Eastern New

York Olympic Development Program (ODP) in the Under-12 to

Under-19 age groups.

Dawson, the former director of Pro Soccer Camps from

1998-2003, serves as a physical education instructor in the Wil-

liam Floyd School District.

Ruairi McGuinness returns to the C.W. Post women’s

soccer team for his third season as assistant coach.

McGuinness is a native to Enniskillen, Northern Ireland.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sport and Fit-

ness Studies from the University of Luton, England in 2000.

McGuiness held a starting position for three years on the

University men’s soccer team, and then became a volunteer

assistant coach for his alma mater in 2000. He also played semi

professionally with the Ballinamallard United F.C. Mallards.

McGuinness is currently serving as the Education Depart-

ment Manager for NOGA Soccer, a position he has held since

February 2001. He also is a staff instructor for the Long Island

Junior Soccer League Academy Staff Program, off ering licenses

to youth soccer coaches on Long Island. Recently, in June 2008,

McGuinness obtained his UEFA A’ License, one of the most

prestigious in Europe.

Lauren Pollitt, a former NYCAC Player of the Year for

C.W. Post, begins her seventh season as an assistant coach at

her alma mater.

Th e former Pioneers central defender was a two-time All-

NYCAC and Academic All-NYCAC selection (2002-03), and

served as a team captain during the 2003 campaign.

Pollitt came to C.W. Post in 2002, following a two-year

stint as one of the best junior college players in the country at

Nassau Community College. She was the team’s starting center

midfi elder in the 2000 and 2001 seasons, and garnered NJCAA

Region XV Player of the Year and NJCAA Honorable-Mention

All-America accolades as a freshman at the Garden City, N.Y.

school.

A four-year starter at Valley Stream Central High School,

Pollitt also worked from 1997-2004 with the Valley Stream

Soccer Club. She served as a team trainer for the LIJSL Boys’

Under-12 and Under-14 age groups from 2002-04, while also

taking on roles as a summer camp instructor and an intramural

head coach with the club.

Pollitt received her bachelor’s in Adolescent Education

with a Social Sudies concentration from C.W. Post in 2004, and

master’s degree in Linguistics and Communications Disorders

from Queens College in 2008.

Kim Yacenda enters her third season as an assistant on the

women’s soccer coaching staff , following a standout playing

career at her alma mater.

Yacenda, a 2008 graduate, capped off her four-year career

by posting a 0.37 goals against average in 2007 She made 59

saves in 1,708 minutes for a save percentage of .894. Her 2007

record between the pipes was 16-1-3. Her performance was

good enough to merit an Honorable Mention as a 2007 All-

American.

Th e Greenlawn native improved in each of her four

seasons at C.W. Post, building a career resume that featured a

36-8-6 record, 26 shutouts and a 0.52 goals against average. She

holds several program goalkeeping records, including all-time

saves (228), wins, and shutouts.

Andreas Lindberg is in his fi rst season assisting the wom-

en’s soccer program, pulling double duty as he also serves as

C.W. Post’s head men’s soccer coach.

Lindberg and Dawson have a proven track record when as-

sisting with the others’ respective program, as Lindberg helped

Dawson with the Southampton women’s program in leading the

Colonials to the second round of the 2004 NCAA Division II

Championships as well as an ECAC championship.

Lindberg also made quite an impact in his fi rst season as

the head men’s soccer coach, earning ECC Coach of the Year

honors after leading the Pioneers to a share of the ECC regular

season title, an ECC Championship title, and a 12-5-2 record in

just his fi rst season at the helm of C.W. Post.

In addition to his coaching duties at C.W. Post, Lindberg is

currently a head coach at the Met Oval Developmental Academy,

a member of the USSF Developmental Academy. He has been a

member of the staff since 2007 and is responsible for coaching

and training top-level 15-18 year olds in the tri-state area and

communicating with United States National Team scouts.

Th e Hampton Bays, N.Y. resident is certifi ed by the National

Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) with an

Advanced National Diploma, and also serves as the regional site

director of the Farmingdale Future Stars Summer Camps, where

he manages and supervises up to 1,200 kids weekly who partici-

pate in the camps.

Lindberg graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Business

from Southampton College in 2002, and received his MBA from

C.W. Post in 2004.

A 12-6-1 season and a third consecutive appear-ance in the East Coast Conference tournament is most certainly a solid season by many program’s standards. But for a C.W. Post women’s soccer team that has become accustomed to ECC Championships and NCAA tourna-ment wins, last season can best be described as unsatisfy-ing. It will certainly provide the necessary motivation for this year’s team, senior-laden with experienced players who have been to two NCAA tournaments, to return to form as an ECC and East Regional power.

Forwards Th e off ense will run through three-time All Region player Ivana Babic (Haninge, Sweden) one of the top options and goal-scoring threats for the Pio-neers. Babic has 40 career goals and 18 career assists, and will look to end her ca-reer on a high note. She will need to fi nd the back of the net in order for the Pioneers to make a playoff and NCAA run. Fellow senior Sanna Pet-terson (Orebro, Sweden) is a hard worker on the off ensive end, and Dawson will look for more production out Petterson this season as she pushes for a starting role.

Jeanine Ambrogi (Greenlawn, N.Y.) played for a strong club team in high school and has the skill and toughness to make an impact either in the midfi eld or up top playing a striker position. Alexa Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.), who was a club team-mate of Ambrogi’s, will also see time at either midfi eld or up top, and her goal-scoring ability could give her an edge in the push for minutes.

Midfi eld Senior Jackie Sousa (North Reading, Mass.) is one of the top returning midfi elders in the conference, but is coming back from off season ACL surgery, so Dawson will look to ease his center midfi elder back into game action. However, if Sousa can progress quickly, she will resume her role as an off ensive threat in the center midfi eld.

Th ree-time All-Region midfi elder Danielle DeLuca (Islip, N.Y.) also returns for her senior year looking to maintain the same type of play she has displayed the last three seasons. A speedy player on the outside of the fi eld, DeLuca is tough to defend and will be an impact player in the midfi eld as well as providing senior leadership to the squad. Junior Tove Eriksson (Helsingborg, Sweden) is a returner to the midfi eld who Dawson will look to get into a starting role this season. With good size and strength,

Eriksson has a solid strike on set pieces and will need to be in impact player on the off ensive end in order for the Pioneers to succeed. Sophomore Prudence Rydstrom (Islip, N.Y.) earned All-Conference First Team accolades following an outstanding rookie season, and Dawson will look for the sophomore to continue her steady play and development. A great competitor, Rydstrom will likely see time at either midfi eld or back this season. Sophomore Sam Tav-antzis (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) is a hard worker and good teammate who will make a push for time at midfi eld, and Lauren Bischoff (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) is a solid player who will provide depth. Ambrogi and Niciforo will also likely see some time at midfi eld.

Defense Th e defense will be an-chored by senior Anna Svensson

(Stockholm, Sweden) who is one of the most solid defen-sive players in the entire region. Svensson will be relied upon not only for her steady defensive play, but for her leadership on the fi eld. Two other seniors return as starters to their posi-tions on defense in Jessie Gianatti (Southington, Conn.) and Katie Weiland (Ocean City, N.J.). Gianatti is a three year starter at left back, and is a tough and reliable player. Weiland has battled though injuries the past few seasons but Dawson is confi dent she has returned to form, and she will provide solid defensive as well as upperclassmen leadership. Senior Qaroline Nahl (Kumla, Sweden) will also re-

turn to the backfi eld after seeing virtually all of her action on the forward line last season. Dawson notes that Nahl is a tough, speedy player with good game knowledge. Senior Samantha Barbero (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) is coming off an off season ankle injury, and will look to return to game form in order to provide another solid op-tion for the defense. Sophomore Janie Janitto (Hamden, Conn.) saw ac-tion in a reserve role at back last season, and will push for more time this season. A hardworking player, Janitto could see time as a starter or pro-vide quality minutes off the bench. Several sophomores will see time at both defense and midfi eld, as Dawson will utilize his teams’ versatility to put out the best pos-sible lineup. Caroline Rostlund (Ostersund, Sweden) lost all of last season due to injury, but has good technical skills and will provide depth to the defense. Jessica Talarico (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) is a hard worker and an excel-lent team player, and will also add depth on defense. Taylor Teff t (West Granby, Conn) is a sound technical player who will push for minutes at back and midfi eld. Freshman Karina Rizzo (Oceanside, N.Y.) comes to the Pioneers with good experience playing in the Olympic Develop-ment Program (ODP) and has played at a high level throughout her prep career. With good size and athleticism, Rizzo is a solid player who could make an impact on defense or in the midfi eld.

Goalkeepers Th e battle for the starting goalkeeper looks to be a very close one, as both returning keepers are talented and athletic players. Junior Allie Weiser (Grand Island, N.Y.) would appear to have the edge, with two seasons under her belt. She looks to return to freshman year form, which saw her put up a 12-2-1 record and earn ECC Goalkeeper of the Year accolades. Weiser will face a stiff challenge from returning soph-omore Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.), who posted a 6-2-1 record last season in 10 starts. Fierro is an excel-lent athlete and a good communicator, and regardless of

who wins the battle for the starting spot, the Pioneers can rely on either keeper to turn in an excellent performance. Th e Pioneers will spend their fi rst seven games on the road, not ideal conditions for any team to start the season, but they will be quickly challenged to reverse the fortunes of last season, where they posted just a 6-5-0 record away from Robert Blitz Field. Opening with UMass-Lowell, the Pioneers will take on two more NE-10 teams in American International and Pace, before facing off against West Virginia Wesleyan and Philadelphia.

Dawson’s squad will open ECC play on Sept. 18 against Molloy, and will fi nally play their home opener on Sept. 28 as they host Southern New Hampshire. Traditional ECC rivals Bridgeport and Dowling both travel to Brookville to take on the Pioneers at home, and a late-season matchup with pre-season top 25 nationally-ranked Kutztown will highlight the latter part of the schedule.

C.W. POST 200910 ECC CHAMPIONS

Founded as the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference in 1989

and rechristened the East Coast Conference in July 2006, the ECC was

formed to enhance intercollegiate athletic competition among member

institutions and to assist them in integrating athletics into their academ-

ic program in a fi scally sound way. Th e ECC is committed to the highest

standards of scholarship, sportsmanship, teamwork, and citizenship. Its

mission is to promote the total person concept in its student-athletes,

which stresses the abilities to excel in academic achievement, athletic

competition, and positive character traits. East Coast Conference (www.

eccsports.org) members for 2010-11-20 include: University of Bridge-

port (CT); C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University (Brookville,

NY); Dowling College (Oakdale, NY); Mercy College (Dobbs Ferry,

NY); Molloy College (Rockville Centre, NY); New York Institute of

Technology (Old Westbury, N.Y); Queens College (Flushing, NY); and

St. Th omas Aquinas College (Sparkill, NY).

Th e ECC sponsors the following championship sports: baseball;

men’s and women’s basketball; men’s and women’s cross country; men’s

and women’s lacrosse; softball; men’s and women’s tennis; men’s and

women’s soccer; and women’s volleyball.

Th e East Coast Conference is a proud member of the NCAA and

Division II. Division II is a dynamic and engaging group of colleges,

Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal

scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008.

A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacifi c Whale Foundation

in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University,

and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post.

As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private

university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300

continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development,

admissions and recruitment, retention, fi nancial aid, athletics, student aff airs, public safety, and

buildings and grounds.

His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In

2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in

achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and fi eld research op-

portunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior.

Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philoso-

phy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the

University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of

Hawai’i: Th e Long Journey Back.”

Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post

Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution

since 1985. Th e son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he

was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in

England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on

a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian

studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary

degrees.

He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where

he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as

executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.

Th e author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught,

lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His fi rst book, “Philippine Collaboration in

World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “Th e Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edi-

tion, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the

Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major

textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “Th e Emergence

of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and

Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005.

Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when

Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies,

the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others.

He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. Th e couple

has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accom-

plishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.

Bryan Collins is in his fi fth year as the Director of Athletics at C.W. Post. Under Collins’ lead-ership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels. During Collins’ tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success. Notable achievements include 24 conference titles as well as three NCAA championship titles from the 2007 women’s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams. Th is past season, the men’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, men’s lacrosse, baseball, softball and women’s lacrosse teams all participated in NCAA tourna-ments. Th e Pioneers alson won the 2009-10 East Coast Conference (ECC) Commissioner’s Cup. Under the direction of Collins, the Pioneers amassed 81.75 total points, to reclaim the Cup for the fi rst time since the 2006-07 academic year.

C.W. Post boasts many of the most top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in national polls. Th ey won the 2009-10 and 2006-07 ECC Commissioners Cup, and fi nished second in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and fi eld hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Off the fi eld, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. Among the eff orts since his arrival have been visitations to the St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, N.Y., while also volunteering with other charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the 2008-09 academic year, C.W. Post student-athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service.

Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic achievements in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program. During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual student-athlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic success. Th e department also established an Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes’ with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facili-ties on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a new state-of-the art sound system for the stadium. In addition, all the outdoor athletic fi elds have under-gone improvements to the playing surface. Th e Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams, received a new quality sound system as well as a working press row for media and game operations staff . A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John’s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, persever-ance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifi ce in seeking to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1987. Collins and his wife, Patti, reside in Sayville, N.Y. with their son, Tyler (15) and daughter, Megan (10).
