friends of United Way,

as we all know 2010 was a very eventful year that brought devastation to various points in central oklahoma. after enduring a record-breaking snow and ice storm in January, we were hit with tornadoes and damaging hail storms in may, followed by debilitating floods in June. although central oklahomans are no strangers to disaster, the continuous bad weather took a toll on our community.

fortunately United Way of Central oklahoma, its Partner agencies and many other organizations stepped up to help those affected by the disasters. a large part of United Way of Central oklahoma’s role in our community is to convene people and organizations that have the resources to get things done. We held to that standard this past year, as we worked with city, county and state government, our Partner agencies, and corporations and nonprofit organizations to meet the needs of our community, both during times of community-wide disasters and during times of personal disasters.

another great stride we took this year was our involvement with the Westtown resource Center and day shelter, a one-stop resource for our community’s homeless population. United Way of Central oklahoma has been an integral part of convening the involved parties to progress the center from concept to reality. We’ve watched the building take shape and look forward to Westtown’s opening in 2011.

United Way of Central oklahoma relies on the generosity of our community to help fund programs at our Partner agencies, as well as our response to projects including disaster response and Westtown.

i have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Chairman of the Board and will always be proud to be associated with such a fine organization. over the past two years, i’ve had the opportunity to further understand the amazing work being accomplished right here in central oklahoma. i know our community is a better place because of United Way of Central oklahoma and the dedication of our donors, volunteers and staff.

together, we can continue to change lives and make our community a better place for all.

sincerely,

ed martinackerman mcQueenUnited Way of Central oklahoma Board Chairman 2009-2010

JAnuARy – snoW stoRmWorking with our Partner Agencies HeartLine and Boy Scouts Last Frontier Council we developed a system for snow and ice removal from the drive and walk ways of elderly and homebound citizens. Following the uncharacteristic snow storm, Boy Scout troops cleared more than 30 drive and walk ways. This may seem like a luxury service, however clear walk ways are critical to the well being of seniors and homebound citizens. This service not only keeps the home owner safe, but it allows for visitors – including mobile meals volunteers – to approach the home safely.

A snow storm, tornadoes, a massive hail storm and numerous floods wreaked havoc on central Oklahoma in 2010. No one in central Oklahoma was exempt from the impact of the multiple disasters. Fortunately numerous city, county and nonprofit organizations, including United Way of Central Oklahoma and our 60 Partner Agencies, were prepared to address the needs of those affected by each of these disasters.

mAy – hAil stoRm & toRnAdoStrong storms are expected in May, however there was nearly no way to prepare for the force of the massive hail storm that pummeled north Oklahoma City. Roofs, windows, siding, windshields and cars were heavily damaged.

United Way of Central Oklahoma partnered with Oklahoma City Councilman Sam Bowman, Oklahoma City Emergency Management, Crossings Community Center, the Disaster Relief Team, and The Salvation Army to open a Damage Assessment Site. During this one day assessment, case workers gained information about the extent of damage not only to vehicles, but to homes and businesses.

From the damage assessment, 61 windshields were replaced and 292 cases were worked. Some families who needed more than just windshield repairs were connected with case workers who helped them access critical services. Fastrack Auto Glass and Glass Guys, Inc. generously reduced their rate, making it possible for United Way of Central Oklahoma to replace the windshields of those who could not afford to replace it on their own.

June – FloodsWhat started out as a damp commute to work quickly turned into a devastating morning. With rain continuing to pour down, drainage systems began overflowing, causing widespread flooding. Cars were stranded on city streets and the interior of homes and businesses became ponds.

Following the floods, United Way of Central Oklahoma worked with numerous partners to reach out to those in the hardest hit areas. United Way Partner Agency Latino Community Development Agency hosted a Small Business Administration Disaster Loan Site that provided financial assistance to families in the affected area. In addition, United Way Partner Agencies The Salvation Army and American Red Cross of Central Oklahoma provided disaster relief services.

Vital SignsUnited Way of Central oklahoma is unique among other United Ways as being one of a very few to provide a community-based research publication for the general public. oklahoma County vital signs has provided central oklahomans with local, current trend data and research for nearly fifteen years and continues to serve as the only broad-based research publication of its kind in central oklahoma. for many readers, vital signs serves as an introduction to new and emerging community trends, as was the case with vital signs: human trafficking special edition. the special edition on human trafficking has been distributed throughout the state as part of the outreach efforts of oklahoman’s against trafficking of humans (oath). the issue also served as a valuable resource for leadership oklahoma City’s 2010-11 youth in action class, who selected human trafficking as their mission and funding focus.

to view past issues of vital signs, visit http://www.unitedwayokc.org/about/vital-signs-report

Programs and Initiativesin 2010, United Way of Central oklahoma convened nearly twenty state and non-profit agencies to develop a pilot project aimed at reducing the number of women sentenced to prison for non-violent offenses. the resulting program, remerge of oklahoma County, is community based with services provided by non-profit agencies to help female offenders break the cycle of crime and addiction, restore family relationships, and lower incarceration and recidivism rates.

United Way of Central Oklahoma has always emphasized the importance of

responsibility, transparency and accountability.

Additionally, our Partner Agencies carry with them

the obligation to uphold the same high standards.

We are committed to maintaining the efficient and

wise stewardship of your contributions to ensure

that funds are directed to programs that are

proven to impact our community.

United Way of Central Oklahoma continually

exceeds United Way Worldwide’s Standards

of Excellence. Committed to responsible

stewardship, 87 cents of every dollar contributed

to United Way of Central Oklahoma goes directly to

programs serving our community. With combined

administrative and fundraising costs less than

13.5%, we are well below the national standard

for charitable accountability for nonprofit

organizations, which is 35%*.

To further ensure your contributions are reaching

those who need it most we depend on a team

of more than 250 donor volunteers who spend

more than 5,600 hours reviewing all programs

at our 60 Partner Agencies. Volunteers assess

agency budgets, IRS 990s, and audits, as well

as spend time at each agency further learning

how their programs work and how they impact

our community. Following this extensive review,

volunteers recommend funding levels to the

Community Investment Committee. These

recommendations are ultimately voted on by our

Board of Directors.

Campaign Results 2010

We asked you to give, and you gave generously. In fact, thousands of central Oklahomans contributed more than $20.7

million to provide solutions to our community’s most pressing problems.

Led by Campaign Chairman Mark Funke, we had another record breaking

fundraising campaign.

Though our annual fund drives are well publicized, many are unaware that

we manage six unique campaigns simultaneously to reach the $20.7 million

mark. We are proud to administer the Combined Federal Campaign, the Heart

of the City Campaign, the State Charitable Campaign, the United Way of

Canadian County Campaign, and the United Way of Logan County Campaign

in conjunction with the United Way of Central Oklahoma Campaign.
