Season Outlook

5www.smcathletics.com

The 2010 Saint Michael’s College field hockey team is oneof the youngest and least experienced squad’s in CarlaHesler’s 12 seasons as Purple Knights’ head coach. However, despite the relative youth and lack of experience, SaintMichael’s could turn some heads in the Northeast-10Conference this season, and has a chance to return to theleague playoffs.

SeniorsFour seniors will look to end their careers on a high note

this fall.At forward, tri-captain Natalie Elvidge will be expected

to provide scoring production. She has been a steady contrib-utor the last two seasons, tallying five goals and four assists, and can become one of the league’s top offensive forces.

In the midfield, tri-captain Kaleigh Ferrari will be centralto the squad’s success. She hasplayed 18 games each of thelast two seasons, and lendssupport both offensively anddefensively.

On defense, tri-captainOlivia Hoeppner is expectedto move into a starting rolethis fall. She received her firstsignificant playing time in2009, and has worked hard forher opportunity to produce asa starter.

In goal, MeghanMcLaughlin should splittime. The multi-sport athletereceived the bulk of the play-ing time in net as a junior, herfirst meaningful collegiateminutes, and has the potentialto anchor the team’s defense.

JuniorsA handful of juniors will also be expected to take their

game to the next level in 2010.The team’s two top returning scorers are forward Jenny

Boudrow and midfielder Taylor Wahrenbrock. Boudrow, anelusive and speedy scorer, netted three goals in a breakoutsophomore campaign. Wahrenbrock, meanwhile, earned fivepoints while playing in all 18 contests, and is one of thestronger and more athletic players in the conference.

In net, Jackie Stacey is expected to see increased playingtime this fall. She got her feet wet in her first year with theteam in 2009, but is a solid option if called upon.

Like Stacey, Katie Stickney received limited playing timein her first season with the team last fall, but should see anenhanced role on defense in 2010.

Completing the class, forward Megan Hill has the poten-tial to crack the starting lineup, and also aid the diverse offen-sive attack.

SophomoresFive sophomores - all of whom saw playing time in 2009

- give the Purple Knights depth at several key positions. At forward, Julia Heald and Kelly MacDonald will be

given the chance to contribute to the squad’s offensive output.Heald did so last year while playing in 15 contests, and sheshould crack the starting lineup, while MacDonald will mostlikely do so in a reserve capacity.

Also expected to make a signficant leap in playing timethis fall is Hali Roy. Sheappears to be the team’s topoption for inserting penaltycorners, and can play bothmidfield and defense.

Also providing depth inthe backfield are LakenFerreira and Erin Brien. Theduo combined to play in fivegames last fall, a total thatshould surely rise in 2010.

First-YearsCompleting the squad are

seven first-years, many ofwhom will need to produceimmediately in order for SaintMichael’s to succeed in 2010.

Kelly Celata is one first-year that has the potential toshine right away. An aggressiveforward, she could move into

the starting lineup by year’s end.Caroline Casper is another forward that could crack the

regular rotation this fall, and may become a starter by 2011.Maggie Bozzutti, meanwhile, completes the trio of first-yearforwards, and is one of the team’s most physical players.

In the midfield, Lauren McHatten and Alexa Colemanbring different styles to the team. McHatten is the tallest play-er on the squad at 5-9, while Coleman one of the smallest at5-2.

Completing the squad are defenders Courtney Bedelland Sarah Marcotte, who should see limited but valuableplaying time in 2010.

Juniors Jenny Boudrow (left) and Taylor Wahrenbrock are the squad’sleading returning scorers, as the duo combined for five goals and 11points in 2009.
