***Avail® - Simplot is proud to introduce the Avail® Technology. Certain chemical elements in the soil interfere with phosphorus’ ability to be absorbed by your turf and ornamentals. By minimizing the adverse effect of these elements on phosphate fertilizer, at the micro-environmental level, Avail® increases the potential for more phosphorus to be absorbed by plant root systems. Simply put, phosphate w/Avail® means more phosphate for your ornamentals and turf, especially establishing turfgrass seedlings.

To determine the amount of fertilizer needed to apply on a given area:Divide 100 by the content of the nutrient you want to calculate for (i.e. nitrogen) times the amount of actual nutrient to be applied for a given area.

Using a fertilizer with the analysis of 40-0-0:

Example 1:The application calls for 1 lb. Nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, the area is 8,500 ft2

Calculate the amount of fertilizer needed by using 100 ÷ 40 = 2.5 lbs. of fertilizer applied on 1,000 ft2

Multiply amount of fertilizer needed per 1,000 ft2 (2.5 lbs.) by the number of 1,000 square feet multiples (8.5)2.5 times 8.5 = 21¼ lbs. is the amount of fertilizer needed to cover 8,500 ft2 providing 1 lb. Nitrogen per 1,000 ft2

Example 2:The application call for 1.25 lbs. Nitrogen per 1,000 ft2, the area is 3.4 acresCalculate the amount of fertilizer needed by using 100 ÷ 40 = 2.5 lbs. times 1.25 = 3.13 lbs. fertilizer to deliver 1.25 lbs. Nitrogen3.13 lbs. will provide 1.25 lbs. of Nitrogen per 1,000 ft2so to cover 3.4 acres the amount of square feet is 43,560 ft2 and since there 43.56 - 1,000 ft2 areas then 43.56 times 3.4 = 148,104 ft2 therefore 148 times 3.13 = 463 lbs. fertilizer

Herbicide Combination Fertilizers

To determine how much herbicide combination fertilizer product to apply based on the recommended amount of active ingredient per acre: Divide 100 by the percentage of acitive ingredient (use the percentage amount - do not move the decimal point) then multiply times the amount of active ingredient in pounds per acre to be applied.

Example: BEST 12-8-16 Mini with .4% Barricade, the label recommends 1.5 lbs of active ingredient per acre so; divide 100 by 0.4 = 250 times 1.5 = 375 lbs. of product per acre ((100 ÷ 0.4) × 1.5 = 375).

The combination of active ingredients, and their multiple modes of action, enables Instrata to control all of the numerous pathogens that cause snow mold throughout the often extended period of winter snow-cover. Instrata uses its three active ingredients to combine suspended particles (chlorothalonil and fludioxonil) and a microemulsion (propiconazole) to yield a one-of-a-kind formulation: a suspomicroemulsion.

29.9% cholorthalonil, 1.2% fludioxonil, and 4.7% propiconazole in a suspomicro-emulsion.

Medallion® Fludioxonil

Medallion represents the Turf and Ornamental market’s first fungicide based on the unique phenylpyrrole chemistry. Different from other fungicide products on the market today, Medallion’s formulation is highlighted by application rates that offer up to 38 times less active ingredient per 100 gallons of solution for ornamentals. In ornamentals medallion is the standard for Rhizoctonia control indoors and out. For Turf Medallion is the contact fungicide offering excellent control of Anthracnose, Brown Patch, Bentgrass Dead Spot, and Snowmold.

Trimec Southern is designed to minimize risk to sensitive southern turfgrasses. But that doesn’t mean it won’t control tough weeds everywhere. In fact, recent research has shown that Trimec Southern is the most effective amine Trimec complex for clover control. Trimec Southern is formulated with less 2,4-D to accommodate sensitive warm-season grasses, and higher in MCPP to maintain the quality performance you expect from a Trimec complex. This adjustment in formulation is the optimum ratio for knocking out clover. So Trimec Southern isn’t just for the south, it’s for tough weed control anywhere, especially where clover or chickweed is the primary target. Trimec Southern is intended for use on bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, centipedegrass and St. Augustinegrass1 and can also be used on cool-season grasses such as bluegrass, fescues and ryegrass.

Barrier® Dichlobenil

Barrier is a selective herbicide for the control of annual and perennial weeds in established landscape and non-crop settings. Barrier is activated with rainfall or irrigation at temperatures above 60°F. After the active ingredient is washed off the granule, Barrier attaches to soil organic matter. As the granules release the active ingredient, a “vapor barrier” is formed in the upper two inches of the soil. Barrier affects only the growing points of plant roots and shoots. Germinating seeds can’t live within the vapor barrier and perennial weeds die when new growth invades this barrier. Barrier slowly kills existing shallow-rooted weeds and grasses. Deep-rooted, established trees, shrubs and certain groundcovers are not affected since their primary roots are well below the layer of vapor.

Pre- and Postemergent

4% dichlobenil in a granular formulation

Barrier® 50W Dichlobenil

Barrier 50W, used as a herbicide under asphalt just prior to paving, creates a vapor barrier that stops all vegetative growth. Weed seed germination is inhibited. Also, the growing tips of roots and the sprouts from rhizomes and stolons are inhibited. Application of Barrier 50W will prevent the blemishes and repairs associated with surface heaving, punctures and sprouting weeds for several years as long as the asphalt surface remains intact. There is minimum risk to ornamentals growing adjacent to the asphalt since any roots penetrating the treated area are pruned off and dichlobenil is not picked up by the root system. It should be remembered, too, that roots of mature trees can extend tremendous distances. Up to 150 ft. for a 60 ft. tall elm. With Barrier 50W between them, both the asphalt and the tree are protected.

Two strengths of bensulide in a granular formulation. May be applied with several different types of granular spreaders such as drop spreaders and cyclone spreaders. Recommended for pre-emergent control of crabgrass, goosegrass and Poa annua as well as other listed annual weeds in turfgrass. The Pre-San labels cover virtually all the major turfgrass species. One of the primary criteria for selecting a pre-emergent herbicide is the tolerance of the turfgrass to the herbicide. The tolerance of established bentgrass (even on greens) to bensulide at labeled rates has been cited as good to excellent by users and researchers.

When used as directed, Amdro Pro: • Delivers proven, cost-effective control of fire ants. • Eliminates the queen and her colony within seven days of a mound treatment. • Rids the entire area of fire ants within two weeks of a broadcast application.

Azatrol® Azadirachtin

Azatrol provides all the benefits of azadirachtin, a proven natural anti-feedant, insect growth regulator, anti-ovipository and repellent, as well as a toxin to soft bodied insect larvae. The benefits to your insect control program are multiple. Anti-feedant: Insects will feed less or not at all on treated plant tissue. Foliage is not damaged and insects ultimately starve to death. IGR: Insects will fail to mature and reproduce, eliminating populations over time, or keeping populations at acceptable levels. Anti-ovipository and Repellent: The likelihood of insect infestation is greatly decreased in treated plants. This also adds a preventive aspect to your control program. An application of Azatrol does not provide the quick ‘knock-down’ of a contact poison. However, 21 days after treatment, insect control is comparable to the standards. The end result — insect population control — is obtained. If Azatrol is used as a preventive treatment throughout the season, prior to insect infestation, the goal of protecting plants, ornamental flowers and shrubs and trees will be accomplished.

Formulation

Endeavor® Pymetrozine

Endeavor insecticide belongs to a new class of chemistry that safely eliminates sap-sucking aphids and whiteflies with its unique mode of action. As the aphid begins to “tap” into a plant treated with Endeavor, its sucking mechanism is immediately and irreversibly paralyzed—the aphid pulls out its stylets. With no harm to beneficial insects or mites, and no further harm to the plants, the aphid dies within 2 to 4 days. Endeavor is also extremely effective against sap-sucking whiteflies.

Sprayer CalibrationsLarge Area SprayerLand speed is the first variable that need to be measured. Since not all tractors, etc. have accurate speedometers on board, a land speed determination should be done.

To accurately determine land speed choose an engine rpm and transmission gear that provides a safe yet productive land speed. •Mark off a linear distance (i.e. 100 feet), then time the vehicle (in seconds) as it travels the pre-measured distance. As a result you •will have a speed measurement in terms of feet / second. Measure the spacing between nozzles or, if it is a boomless spray nozzle refer to manufacturer's nozzle specification for effective •coverage width.

Calculate:Speed = distance (feet) / time (seconds) x 60 seconds / minute •Area (in acres/minute) = speed feet / minute x nozzle spacing (inches) x 1 foot / 12 inches x acre / 43,560 square feet •

Then measure:Nozzle output: Using a measuring cup, collect the spray output from each nozzle for a pre-determined measured amount of time •(i.e. 30 seconds). Replace invidual nozzles if output varies more than 10% from the average of all nozzles. Hardened stainless steel resists wear the most but is the most costly whereas brass is the least expensive but wears out much more quickly.Output gallons / minute = volume (fluid ounces) / time (seconds) x 60 seconds / minute x 1 gallon / 128 fluid ounces. •Finally, gallons / acre = gallons / minute ÷ acre / minute •

Hand Sprayer CalibrationMark out an area equal to 1 / 128 • th of an acre which is 340 squre feet (i.e. 18 ½ ft x 18 ½ ft, 10 ft x 34 ft, or 1½ ft x 228 ft).Measure the time it takes to spray the measured area. Repeat several times and take the average time. •Spray into a container for the same amount of time it took to spray the measured area. Measure the water collected, in ounces. •IMPORTANT: The amount collected in ounces equals gallons per acre.

Example:● Step 1. Measure area. 18.5 by 18.5 ft = 340 sq ft ● Step 2. Amount of time to spray = 51 seconds ● Step 3. Amount collected = 40 oz Therefore; 40 ounces = 40 GPADetermining How Much Pesticide To Add To The Spray Mixture

Pesticide labels call for 1 quart of the product per acre •The sprayer is applying 40 gallons per acre. Therefore; you will need to add 1 quart of the pesticide to each 40 gallons of water •Your sprayer only holds 1 gallon of spray mixture. So how much pesticide will you need to add to the gallon of water? •1 quart or 32 ounces divided by 40 gallons means that each gallon of water contains 0.8 ounces of the pesticide •1 fluid ounce = 2 tablespoons. Therefore; you will need ~ 2 tablespoons of the pesticide per gallon of water. •

How large of an area will 1 gallon spray? There are 43,560 ft2/acre. If 40 gallons will spray one acre then one gallon will spray an area 1/40 that size. Therefore; 43,560 ft ÷ 40 = 1,089 ft2

Formulation Manufacturer

Atrimmec®

A systemic plant growth regulator which works by blocking the plant hormones that stimulate growth. Applied as a foliar spray, it is absorbed by the leaves and translocated to the shoot tips where it interrupts apical dominance and temporarily stops shoot elongation. One trimming and one Atrimmec application can last the entire season on many plants. Spraying shrubs, hedges, trees and groundcovers not only reduces trimming and pruning labor by 50% or more, but Atrimmec also improves the appearance of landscape ornamentals. It promotes lateral branching giving plants a more dense, fuller look. Hedges and shrubs that show irregular shapes including damage from pests and weather, can fill in lushly, even on the old wood, particularly if treated under optimum growing conditions. Atrimmec users can trim for a formal shape or a more natural appearance. For a natural look, you trim to shape, then allow new shoots to grow at least two inches before applying Atrimmec. For a formal look, trim the shrub or groundcover to shape, leaving at least two pairs of expanded leaves on each shoot to absorb the spray.

Did you know?New data posted to the internet in March 2009 by the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP), showed Jacklin Seed bluegrasses in a commanding lead in the first full year of the new trial results. The latest trial was planted in August 2005 and contains 110 mostly new varieties evaluated at 18 university locations from coast to coast. This spring’s data marks the first results from the new test. Of the 15 top-performing entries in the trial, 13 were bred by Jacklin Seed. These 13 included 8 new experimental varieties Jacklin Seed developed specifically for this test.“The results show we’re headed in the right direction,” says Doug Brede, Jacklin Seed’s Research Director. “Eight of the 10 new experimentals we entered scored in the top 15.” Brede does the bluegrass and bentgrass breeding himself. His research team works on 9 other grass species.“This is the third consecutive NTEP that Jacklin varieties have dominated turf quality,” he says. Jacklin varieties monopolized the top of the trial in the 1995-1999 and 2000-2005 studies as well.In addition to experimentals, Jacklin Seed entered several variety “standards” into the trial, the highest ranking of which was NuGlade in the new results. Results released to date are labeled as “preliminary,” since one or two additional sites are expected to submit scores in the coming weeks. Full data is available on the www.ntep.org website.

SprayPack®

Adjuvant products designed to enchance your pesticide and feritlizer spray applications by improving the characteristics of the spray solution.

Product Description

Spray-Wet® Spray-Wet is a highly concentrated low-foam, non-ionic spreader activator. Spray-Wet increases the activity and effectiveness of pesticides, by breaking down the waxy cuticle on the leaf surface, and improves adhesion between the pesticide and the plant surface.

Spray-Buff®Spray-Buff is an organic, acidifying tank-mix adjuvant, designed to improve water quality, by lowering the pH of spray solution. Spray-Buff is designed for use, and is compatible with all types of traditional spray equipment. Spray-Buff does not contain heavy metals, that may inactivate companion pesticides.

Spray-Soft®

Spray-Soft is a water conditioning agent, which promotes herbicide performance, by modifying elements such as, pH and hardness of the spray water. To aid in herbicide uptake, a blend of ammonium sulfate and ammoniacal nitrogen have been added, along with buffers, sequestrants, and chelating agents, to condition the spray water. Hard water and high pH can minimize the effectiveness of certain pesticides. Ammoniacal nitrogen is known to be an effective uptake enhancer for herbicides, by several plant species and by conditioning the spray water, and providing a source of ammoniacal nitrogen. Spray-Soft positively affects herbicide spray applications.

Spray-Fast®

Spray-Fast is a superior, nonionic wetting agent combined with organosilicone, designed for water based pesticide applications in horticulture, industrial, turf, and forestry operations. It is designed for fast spreading, uniform distribution, and absorption of spray on leaf and stem surfaces. Spray-Fast may be used with most pesticides and fertilizer products. Optimum application and consequent effects, can be influenced by many factors. It is recommended that the spray be observed, and adjuvant rates be adjusted accordingly. During application, insure thorough coverage without excessive runoff.

Spray-Sticker®Spray-Sticker is a superior sticking agent, intended for use with most crop protection products, in which the label permits the use of a spreader sticker. Spray-Sticker is compatible in spray solutions with most commercial crop protection, and foliar feed micronutrients. A thin coating of Spray-Sticker solution, bonds the pesticide to the plant foliage. This decreases the risk of residue erosion from rainfall or irrigation.

Spray-Slick®

Spray-Slick is a unique blend, of highly refined and modified spray oil, and nonionic organosilicone. Spray-Slick with its unique chemistry allows for enhanced wetting, and absorption of those pesticides, or products which labels recommend the addition of a spray adjuvant, to improve performance. The addition of Spray-Slick to a spray tank solution, will improve a spray application by physically modifying the wetting and spreading characteristics, the result being a more uniform spray deposit. Observe the initial application, to insure thorough coverage without excessive runoff of the spray.

Spray-Rite®Spray-Rite is a specially formulated blend of water conditioning and acidifying agents intended for use with a variety of pesticide or nutrient applications that recommend lower pH water and ammonium sulfate as a tank mix additive. Spray-Rite is a water-soluble powder that readily goes into solution. Spray-Rite improves pesticide performance by conditioning and acidifying tank mix water. The ammonium sulfate ingredient prevents hard water antagonism from water impurities such as iron, calcium and magnesium. Certain herbicides fungicides and insecticides perform more effectively at lower pH ranges. Spray-Rite is compatible with all glyphosate formulations and with a range of drift retardants and nonionic surfactants and is approved for aquatic use.
