Voluntary Action CenterDuring the past winter season, the Huskies worked with the Volun-tary Action Center, a program that serves the DeKalb/Sycamore area, helping with hunger relief. The Huskies worked with the Meals on Wheels program delivering bags of hot and cold meals to the elderly at the DeKalb High Rise senior center for over two weeks.

Hook a Kid on Golf Foundation Since 2003, NIU golfers have been working with the Illinois’ Hook A Kid On Golf program. Hook A Kid provides structured instruction for kids 5-15 and teaches them a skill that will be beneficial in their per-sonal and professional lives. Hook A Kid brings golf inside the class-room and exposes youths to a game they can enjoy for a lifetime.

Jerry Rich shrugs off the fact that he is one of only a few people to have ever actually inquired about membership at Augusta National. Had he joined, his significant energies and do-it-yourself resolve might not have been applied to creating a tough and beautiful track in northern Illinois that, in a handy turn of names, has been the invocation of farmers in the Prairie State for hundreds of years.

Jerry and Betty Rich’s dream began to intersect when a small bit of the farm they had built by amassing adjacent farms into a 1,820-acre showcase of nature and agriculture gave way to one golf hole and a practice area. Then three holes, then six. Inspired by Augusta and the encouragement of friends Bob Murphy and Sam Snead, Rich completed 18 holes in 1997. After interviewing five architects he discovered he could draw the plans himself - and did, in typical fashion. He even hired a construction company that had never before done a golf course. While he was influenced by Augusta, he also took inspiration from Dick Wilson’s Pine Tree in Florida. Within five years Rich Harvest Links was ranked as the fifth Best New Private Course in the U.S., beating out designs from Nicklaus, Dye and Wieskopf, and was proclaimed as a Top 100 pick. In the “condition” category, it was ranked 2nd Best New Course in the country.

For many that would be enough. For Jerry Rich, it was just the start. In 1998, with his life-long friend Don Springer, he established the Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois that by 2004 had introduced over 150,000 Illinois children to the game. Of all of his accomplishments, he hopes the

All the holes at Rich Harvest Farms are not only numbered but named. The par three Silver No. 5 is aptly named “Amen - Holy Stone.” One must clear a winding creek and an imposing wall of stones to reach the green safely.

No. 7 on the Silver Course, “Beauty & the Beast,” lives up to its name. The approach shot offers a beautiful view of the green, however, with water in the front and sand on the other three sides, it takes total concentration to ensure the ball lands on the green.

When golfers step into the tee box of Silver No. 4, they are greeted to one of the most intimidating tee shots in golf. They have to contend with trees on either side, water in the front, and if that wasn’t enough, high prairie grass if they want to hit the fairway of “Devil’s Elbow.”

No. 9 on the Gold Course, “Covered Bridge,” is a dog leg right par five. If one wants to be bold and go for the green on their second shot, they have to contend with Welch Creek, which divides the fairway in half. Three bunkers running down the left side of the fairway ensure all shots will head slightly right.

Foundation will be his legacy. Rich Harvest has been the site for the foundation’s fundraisers, including the Bob Murphy Pro-Am and Chrysler All-Star Shoot-Out.

The course, like everything Jerry Rich undertakes, is a testament to his drive, tastes, sense of fun and devotion to the game. Each hole has been thoughtfully named. Number 3, “Snead’s Crotch”, is a 362-yard par 4 with a 90-degree dogleg and the beckon to “walk with a legend, tee shot 230 with a draw”. “Devil’s Elbow”, No.13, warns of the “most demanding tee shot in golf ”, In another gesture to Augusta, the par-3 14th is “Amen Holy Stone” and offers a caution to “check the wind” when hitting over a brontosaurus shaped pond. Caddies even wear the white jump suits and green hats so distinctive to the Masters. There are 18 pins but 45 potential holes. Wilson was a proponent of large greens, sand bunkers and clever doglegs, all found on the 4th, which on the card is a 200-yard par 3 but can also be played as a 278-yard par 4, requiring a gamma ray tee shot through the trees. There are 105 bunkers to contend with, along with wetlands and natural waste areas, giving the layout its dichotomous character.

A picture perfect farm, an award-winning course, a successful and growing foundation for kids. The next step for Rich? How about hosting the 2009 Solheim Cup, and he did just that, as Rich Harvest Farms served as the grounds for competition for Team USA’s 16-12 win over Team Europe to keep the Cup.

After taking their swings at The Course, Huskie golfers can walk over to the practice green. From chipping out of the rough or punching it out of the sand, sinking a long putt or making a “gimme”, the practice green at Harvest Lodge allows Huskie golfers to work on every aspect of the short game no matter the weather.

Located just beyond the green of Gold No. 9 is the beautiful Harvest Lodge. Inside are 10 fully-furnished cottages, a state-of-the-art exercise room and an indoor practice area. There are also two practice areas located outside, with a putting green on the side and a driving range in back.

You don’t have to travel too far to continue to work on your game once the weather breaks. Step out the back door of Harvest Lodge and you’ll find a well-manicured driving range. With several pins located at various distances, NIU’s student-athletes can swing every club from pitching wedge to driver.

Also located inside Harvest Lodge is The Course, a high definition golf simulator. Huskies can work on their swings in a comfortable setting with this state-of-the-art training tool.

Opened November 1, 2007, the Huskie Indoor Training (H.I.T) Center is one of the newest athletic training facilities to open on the Northern Illinois University campus. While the Jeffrey and Kimberly Yordon Center, which opened in August of 2007 provides a home for the athletic training, sports performance and academic units of NIU athletics, the H.I.T. Center serves as the indoor practice home for the Northern Illinois baseball, men’s and women’s golf and softball programs.

Located southwest of the Convocation Center in what was formerly known as the John Deere Building, the H.I.T. Center provides student-athletes a place to develop their skills during the winter months.

The H.I.T. Center measures 9,800 square feet and features an Astroturf carpet floor and sport specific lighting. Space is divided equally for baseball/softball and golf. Retractable netting allows for the redistribution of practice space. Four full-size batting cages are located on the baseball/softball side of the facility, while the golf side features space for six practice tees surrounded by netting. A

putting green has also been installed.

Prior to the opening of the H.I.T. Center, NIU’s spring sport student-athletes used space in the Rec Center or on the east side of Huskie Stadium. Now they have a place of their own to call home.

kIshwaukee couNtry clubKishwaukee Country Club is the home of the KCC-NIU Huskies Short Game Practice Facility, which was officially opened on August 1, 2009 after the facility was completed in mid-July of 2009 at the course that is located at 1901 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

KCC Golf Course Superintendant Jeff Hoste’s new 40,000 square foot practice facility covers nearly every shot possible from 75 yards and in. The 25-yard deep creeping bent-grass green is mowed to just under an eighth of an inch and the bent-grass fairway is mowed at one-half inch. The facility also features a fairway bunker at 40 yards and a greenside bunker at 20 yards.

Established in 1901, KCC is also where the Northern Illinois golf program holds practices and qualifying rounds. The par-70 course is 6,324 yards of golf on bent grass with a rating of 70.9 and a slope of 124. The 18-hole championship course has also been host to the Illinois PGA Senior Tournament and Illinois Senior Open.

In one semester as head men’s golf coach at Northern Illinois,

Tom Porten has already had a taste of success. In his first ever event at the helm of NIU golf, Porten’s team carded a score of four-under par 280 at the Spartan Classic on September 19, 2009 that stands as the third-best 18-hole score in program history. More importantly, that could be a sign of things to come.

Despite the early success, and a 54-hole score of 883 in his first event for a ninth-place finish, Porten quickly found himself in a bit of a bind and had to find a way to turn things around after NIU averaged a 54-hole score of 939.3 over the next three events.

And he did just that, displaying his coaching ability, hard work, and dedication to the NIU golf program as the Huskies posted their best score of the fall season by shooting an 882 at the APSU Intercollegiate.

While ending the fall season positively on the links, Porten has also stressed the importance of the academic success that the program has enjoyed in the past. The golfers led all men’s athletic programs at NIU with an 86 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) as part of the Huskies’ overall GSR of 82 percent, which marked the fifth straight year of improvement in the overall Huskie GSR. The golfers also posted a combined cumulative GPA of 3.166 to lead all men’s programs in the fall of 2009, and helped NIU student-athletes extend their streak to nine semesters in a row with a GPA above 3.0.

Porten brings experience in the Mid-American Conference to Northern Illinois as he was the head men’s golf coach at Akron in 2006-07, and spent one season as the associate head coach at MAC golf powerhouse Kent State in 2007-08.

In one season as associate head coach for both the men’s and women’s golf teams at Kent State, he assisted in all phases of coaching, recruiting, fundraising and administration for the Top 30 Division I program. While there, both teams finished with the highest ranking in school history (men - 12th; women - 13th).

Porten also achieved similar results as the head men’s golf coach at Akron in 2006-07 as the Zips won a school-record four tournaments and posted their top finish at the MAC Championships with a second-place showing.

Prior to his time in the MAC, Porten spent 15 years at Cleveland State University as the head men’s golf coach and then created and led the women’s program at the school. During his tenure at his alma mater, Porten turned a program that did not award scholarships when he arrived in 1991 into a conference championship team in 1998, earning Midwest Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors for that effort. Two years later, he added duties as Cleveland State’s director of golf operations and head women’s golf coach for the start-up program, earning MCC Coach of the Year in 2002-

03. In his last season at CSU in 2005-06, the Viking men’s team

won the Horizon League Championship to earn the first automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals in school history. Porten picked up his third conference coach of the year honor.

At each of his collegiate coaching stops, in addition to his coaching responsibilities, Porten has been involved in managing tournaments, including events at Firestone Country Club in Akron, fundraising - through tournaments and corporate sponsorships - and community service efforts.

The Ohio native spent last year as Director of Instruction at GolfTEC Cleveland East in Beachwood, Ohio, where he taught more than 1,600 lessons to 200 clients, including some of the region’s top collegiate and prep players.

The 46-year-old Porten, who is just the third head coach in the history of the NIU men’s golf program, earned a bachelor’s degree in history with a political science minor from Cleveland State in 1990. He and his wife, Renee, have an 18-year-old son, Ryan, 16-year-old daughter, Victoria, and nine-year-old daughter, Anna Renee.

The newest member of the NIU men’s golf coaching staff, Kurt Sro-ka brings a solid golf background to the Huskies. The Illinois native spent the last three years as a golf professional at Boone Creek Golf Academy in Bull Valley, Ill., where he taught lessons, built the junior golf program to over 300 students, coordinated golf outings, trained employees and assisted in the daily functioning of the facility.

Sroka also spent the last three years providing personalized assess-ments as a Titleist Performance Institute certified fitness instructor at Snap Fitness in McHenry, Ill.

In the fall of 2005, the former McHenry High School standout served as a fitness center assistant at the Sports Enhancement Cen-ter in Bloomington, Ill supervising the golf instruction program.

As a player, Sroka was a four-year letterwinner (2002-06) and a member of the 2005 Missouri Valley Conference championship team at Illinois State, where he received his bachelor’s degree in exercise science with a coaching minor in August of 2007. He also played in the 2006 U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Course. Additionally, Sroka was named the 2001 Northwest Herald Golfer of the Year while playing for McHenry on his way to a fourth-place finish in the IHSA Class AA 2001 state finals.

Shea Thompson is in his second year as a graduate assistant on the Northern Illinois Sports Performance staff working with student-athletes in the areas of strength and conditioning. The Iowa native has worked with the football, wrestling, women’s soccer, and golf programs in his time at NIU assisting with the development of all aspects of training for Huskie student-athletes.

Prior to his arrival at NIU, Thompson spent 18 months at the Uni-versity of Nebraska as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. He helped develop the Cornhuskers’ training routines for track & field throwers, golf, tennis, and swimming teams and assisted the men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling squads.

As an undergraduate at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, Thompson held the position of head volleyball strength and condi-tioning coach. He also lettered for two years as a linebacker on the Beaver football team and earned a bachelor of arts in exercise science with a minor in health and coaching in 2007.

Thompson is a member of the National Strength and Condition-ing Association, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and is CPR certified.

Northern Illinois made history in 2007 by hosting its first NCAA Regional in any sport when NIU served as the home school for the NCAA Central Golf Regional on May 17-19 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., the Huskies’ home course.

In all, 27 teams vied for one of 11 spots in the NCAA Championships. Northern Illinois staff members, the staff of Rich Harvest Farms and a host of local volunteers made the event one to remember for the participants. In the end, Tulsa staved off a late charge by Alabama and held on for the championship with a three-round tally of 895.

The Crimson Tide finished with an 898, followed by Louisville (899), Lamar (900), Tennessee (904), Oklahoma State (906), Texas Tech (907), Michigan State (915), Texas (916) and Minnesota (918) to round out the top 10. The Golden Gophers edged Texas A&M (918) in a one-hole playoff to earn the final berth in the 2007 NCAA Championships.

Lamar’s Dawie Van Der Walt and Wisconsin’s Dan Woltman shared the individual title at one-under-par (215), followed by Western Illinois’ Tim Streng (+3, 219), Xavier’s Jason Kokrak and Alabama’s Michael Thompson, who both tied for fourth (+4, 220). Streng and Woltman each earned individual invitations to the NCAA Championships.

The Jeffrey & Kimberly Yordon Center is a state-of-the-art facility in every way. From the Midwest Orthopaedic

Training Room to the Chet and Teresa Young Equipment Room, the strength & conditioning center to the Frances and George Wilkins Academic Support Center, every Huskie student-athlete is provided with the resources necessary to excel in the classroom and in competition.

While all 450 NIU student-athletes utilize the Yordon Center throughout the year, the facility is the full-time home of the Huskie football program, with locker rooms for players and coaches, meeting rooms, a spacious football equipment room and office space.

The heart of the 62,000-square foot Yordon Center, the Frances and George Wilkins Academic Support Center (honoring Carole & Joe Novak), features one-on-one tutorial rooms, a group study room and a fully-equipped computer lab, as well as offices for the counselors of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) unit. This area brings the staff of SAASS into more direct daily contact with NIU’s student-athletes and is a constant hub of activity in the building.

The 12,500-square foot strength & conditioning center allows NIU’s professional sports performance coaches to avoid scheduling conflicts between teams while allowing space for warm-ups, plyometric exercises and speed and agility activities. The spacious area features brand new equipment with a variety and multitude of machines, as well as a three-lane sprint track.

All Huskie student-athletes benefit from the spacious and technologically-advanced facilities used by NIU’s professional athletic training staff and team doctors to prevent, treat and rehabilitate injuries in the Yordon Center. Doctors and trainers have been provided with all the tools they need, as the Yordon Center’s state-of-the-art health center features an X-ray room, doctor’s office, two rehabilitation pools, a drug testing area and offices for staff.

DeKalb’s CornFest (left) and Taste of Chicago (right) are two popular summertime events. The Taste leads up to Chicago’s Fourth of July festivities, while CornFest coincides with the students’ return to campus in late August.

When a Northern Illinois University student-athlete steps onto campus in DeKalb, Illinois, they are stepping onto the national

stage. Located just 65 miles west of downtown Chicago, the nation’s third-largest media market, Huskie student-athletes are a part of one of this country’s great sports towns.

During the 2007-08 season, the NIU football team took on Iowa at Soldier Field in the fall, while the baseball team faced Notre Dame at U.S. Cellular Field in the spring. In 2011, the Huskies will return to Soldier Field to play Wisconsin.

DeKalb’s proximity to Chicago also affords local citizens, including NIU students, the opportunity to experience all that the city has to offer, from cultural events and festivals, to restaurants and theatres. Three airports – O’Hare, Midway and Rockford – are within an hour’s drive of NIU.

While it is close to the “Windy City” and the city’s ever-expanding western suburbs, DeKalb maintains a unique character and offers a quality existence to its nearly 45,000 residents. DeKalb is successfully combining the old and the new as brick-paved streets and historic homes co-exist with a growing business sector and brand new residential and commercial developments. In addition to many activities, including Huskie athletics, available on campus, DeKalb is famous for its annual “CornFest,” welcoming students back to town in late August.

Northern Illinois University is among the nation’s premier regional public

universities. Located in one of the most dynamic regions of the country, NIU is a comprehensive teaching and research institution with a diverse and international student body of more than 25,000.

• Northern Illinois has been ranked in the top four percent of all American universities by the Carnegie Foundation, having received the agency’s highest possible designation – “Doctoral/Research University Extensive.”

•The NIU College of Business was ranked 65th in BusinessWeek’s 2007 ranking of best undergraduate business programs in the country. The college received especially high marks for the quality of its faculty, its job placement services and for its facilities. • NIU’s School of Art is the largest producer of art teachers in Illinois, and overall, NIU is one of the 10 largest teacher preparation programs in the nation.

• Northern’s Jazz Lab Band, under the direction of Rodrigo Villanueva, won the top prize at the 2008 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Festival. The prestigious festival celebrated its 41st year in March 2008.

• Students from the NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology took first place in the Spring 2007 Basic Utility Vehicle Competition hosted by the Institute for Affordable Transportation in Indianapolis. The Institute challenges teams to design and build simple, durable and affordable transportation that can be manufactured cheaply in third world countries.

•The 2007 graduates of the NIU School of Nursing posted a 99 percent passing rate on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensure Examination. Comparatively, the pass rate was 86 percent for all nursing programs in Illinois and 85 percent for all U.S. programs.

Dr. John G. Peters is the 11th president of

Northern Illinois University, a post he has held since June 2000. As NIU’s chief executive officer, Dr. Peters provides strategic direction and oversight for a nationally-recognized, comprehensive university serving more than 25,000 students in 120 areas of study at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Under his leadership, NIU has both expanded and refined its

institutional vision to more closely align teaching, research and outreach efforts with emerging needs of the northern Illinois / Chicagoland region.A native of Strongsville, Ohio, Dr. Peters earned his bachelor’s degree in political science at Cleveland’s John Carroll University, and a master’s in government from Ohio University in Athens. In 1974, he received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to assuming the NIU presidency, Dr. Peters was provost and chief operating officer at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. His distinguished academic career also includes 20 years in teaching and administrative roles at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned numerous awards for work in and out of the classroom. Dr. Peters’ presidency at NIU has been marked by substantial increases in the university’s reputation and the discovery of new sources of funding. In his first year as president, he gained admission for Northern Illinois University to the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), an honor reserved for the top five percent of universities nationwide. That same year, Dr. Peters secured NIU’s largest-ever private gift: $20 million for a new College of Business building. Since that time, President Peters has led efforts to expand federal funding of select NIU research programs – a campaign that has garnered more than $60 million, strengthened key partnerships with state and federal research programs, and enhanced NIU’s standing in the prestigious Carnegie Foundation rankings of research institutions.NIU’s longstanding commitment to regional service has also received new attention and support under Dr. Peters’ leadership. His vision of NIU as “the nation’s premier regional public university” has been the basis for substantial enhancement of regional partnerships with schools, businesses, health care and local governmental agencies. In 2005, Dr. Peters established an ambitious five-year plan that leverages historic NIU strengths by connecting regional engagement and applied research to the university’s well-known focus on real-world learning experiences. Fortified by that plan and more than $100 million in private donations, NIU launched its first-ever

comprehensive capital campaign and began a campus-wide strategic planning process to focus university resources and efforts in the years ahead. Among its more ambitious components is creation of a proton therapy cancer treatment and research center that integrates NIU’s respected physics program with cutting-edge nuclear medicine. Dr. Peters’ reputation as a consensus-builder and education policy expert puts him in demand for leadership roles in statewide and national organizations. He has served as chair of the Mid-American Conference Council of Presidents and is a member of that group’s executive committee. His leadership in the area of intercollegiate athletics also includes membership on the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee representing the “coalition conferences.” Dr. Peters served as Illinois’ representative to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). He is a member of the U.S. Abraham Lincoln Commission on International

Education; NASULGC’s Commission on Women in Higher Education; and is co-chair of Illinois’ Center for Child Welfare and Education. In 2004, the U.S. Department of Education named Dr. Peters to a special task force studying math and science education, providing a national perspective for his ongoing work with education and economic development groups throughout the Midwest.A political scientist by training, Dr. Peters specializes in studies of public policy and Congress. He has published widely, including articles in the Journal of Policy Studies, American Politics Quarterly, American Political Science Review, and Legislative Studies Quarterly, and has co-edited two books on American politics. He is a Fellow of the Center for Great Plains Studies and has served as the associate editor of the Great Plains Quarterly. Dr. Peters and his wife, Barbara Cole Peters, have a son, Russell, who lives and works in Knoxville, Tennessee with his wife, son and daughter.

associate vice president and director of athletics at Northern Illinois University on June 1, 2008, Jeff Compher has made strategic decisions to keep the athletics program moving forward while planning for the future and engaging with Huskie student-athletes.On February 10, 2009, Compher unveiled the NIU Department of

Intercollegiate Athletics’ Strategic Plan. The plan defines the mission, vision and values of the department while setting strategic goals and objectives for each unit for the next three years. Developed by NIU head coaches and a team of administrators, the cornerstone of the plan is the one-sentence, comprehensive, mission statement — “We develop champions in the classroom, in competition, and in life.” While Compher was laying out his plan for Huskie Athletics, NIU student-athletes continued to raise the bar academically. For the ninth consecutive semester, NIU student-athletes combined to post a cumulative grade point average above 3.0 as the fall 2009 term GPA came in at 3.05. On the fields of play, Compher was instrumental in securing the Huskie football team’s berth in the 2008 Independence Bowl on an at-large basis, while the NIU men’s soccer team lost in overtime of the MAC Championship match after claiming a win over No. 2 ranked SMU earlier in the year. Northern Illinois sent two wrestlers and two gymnasts to NCAA Regional competition, and both the softball and baseball teams claimed wins over ranked teams in 2009.In addition, in his first year, Compher oversaw the completion and opening of Northern Illinois’ new Track & Field/Soccer Complex as well as the installation of a new FieldTurf surface at Huskie Stadium. He completed the negotiation of a 10-year contract with ISP Sports to manage NIU’s multi-media rights and corporate partnerships, giving Northern Illinois a guaranteed income stream. He also oversaw the renegotiation of agreements with 670 AM WSCR The Score and Comcast SportsNet Chicago to broadcast Northern Illinois contests. Most recently, Compher hired Eric Luzzi to lead the Huskie men’s soccer program.A veteran collegiate athletics administrator, Compher came to DeKalb after nearly four years at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash., where he served as executive associate athletic director and was responsible for the general management and daily operations of the athletic department at the Pac-10 school. The Baltimore, Md. native also brought previous experience as an athletic director to Northern Illinois as he led the athletics program at Western Carolina University from 2000 to 2004. In each of his previous three stops, Compher has been involved in developing and implementing long-range planning and working closely with constituencies within and outside the university. He has emphasized the student-athlete experience. At Washington, Compher had day-to-day responsibility for a 23-sport, 650 student-athlete department, including direct oversight of the football, men’s basketball, baseball and crew teams, as well as facilities and game operations. He also managed the student-athlete welfare areas. During his tenure at Washington, it consistently ranked in the top 30 in the Director’s Cup standings while surpassing NCAA Academic Progress Rate and

Graduation Success Rate standards. At both UW and Western Carolina, Compher was directly involved with capital projects and facility renovations, including construction of a new track/soccer and tennis complex and a significant expansion of the football stadium at Western Carolina, and the completion of the Football Legends Center at the University of Washington.While at WCU, he also hired successful head coaches who have since been hired at BCS programs, and saw the operating budget increase by 42 percent and the total budget for athletic scholarships improve by 113 percent. During his tenure in Cullowhee, the Catamount teams improved their individual and conference records, and the baseball, women’s golf and indoor track and field teams won Southern Conference titles. As associate and then senior associate athletic director at Vanderbilt University for four years, Compher directed nearly every area of the department, including leading the external areas from 1998-2000. Prior to that, he oversaw the NCAA compliance, academic support, strength and conditioning, equipment and CHAMPS/Life Skills areas at Vanderbilt. Compher spent 13 years in several different positions at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. As assistant athletic director at N.C. State from 1986-92, he managed the student-athlete support services units, established the first life skills program and handled scheduling and travel for the football and men’s basketball teams. He was the assistant to the chancellor at N.C. State before moving on to Vanderbilt and back into athletics administration.Throughout his career, the 50-year-old Compher has continued his education, participating in the NACDA Management Institute (1998), the Sports Management Institute Executive Program (1998-99) and the Division I-A Athletic Directors’ Institute (2005 and 2006). He served on numerous university committees at each of his previous stops and spent time in the classroom as an instructor at Washington, Western Carolina and N.C. State. Compher earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from James Madison University, where he was a football student-athlete, in 1980, and graduated with a master’s degree in counseling and student personnel services from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania in 1982. His first position in collegiate administration was at North Carolina State, where he was the assistant director of Housing and Residence Life from 1982 to 1986. He and his wife, the former Cathy Fatica, have two sons, C.J. (17) and David (14).

The Mid-American Conference was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus,

Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. Today the Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only, and sponsors 23 sports.

Comprising the East Division are Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State (1952), Buffalo (1998), Kent State (1951), Miami (1947), Ohio (1946) and Temple (2007). The West Division members are Ball State (1973), Central Michigan (1971), Eastern Michigan (1971), Northern Illinois (1975-86, 1997), Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan (1947).

One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 63-year history of the league this past March. Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving for six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference.

For men, championships are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis.
