Free Courses UNBC recently offered free courses for Aboriginal, unemployed, and low income residents in Quesnel. The Business Development Assistance certificate program is part of the federally financed Community Adjustment Fund. “Participants learned how to start their own business, how to expand an existing business, or how to work with other businesses and economic developers,” says Program Coordinator Titi Kunkel. Valedictorian Sheila Anderson (BSW ’10) could be the poster child for hard work and perseverance. The 22 year old began her post-secondary journey at the age of 17 with a two month old accompanying her to class at UNBC’s Quesnel campus. This May, Anderson walked across the stage at UNBC’s Prince George convocation as Valedictorian of the College of Arts, Social, and Health Sciences. UNBC Highlights 2009/2010

Quesnel grad, and Valedictorian of the College of Arts, Social, and Health Sciences class,

Sheila Anderson and daughter.

• The UNBC men’s basketball team scored UNBC’s first national championship this year after going 17-1 during the season and capturing the provincial title.

• This June, UNBC is celebrating two anniversaries: the 10th anniversary of the health care rally in Prince George that led to the establishment of the Northern Medical Program and the 20th anniversary of the creation of UNBC by the Government of BC.

• John MacDonald, co-founder of MacDonald Dettwiler, is UNBC’s fifth chancellor. The Prince Rupert native and CEO of BC-based solar company Day4 Energy is a champion of BC’s renewable energy.

• UNBC is actively implementing a $15 million bioenergy program at the Prince George campus that could give the core campus the smallest carbon footprint of any Canadian university by this time next year.
