Lions Set to Make Noise in First Season as Active CIAA MemberLincoln University of Pennsylvania football begins its first sea-son of active NCAA Division II membership an experienced group hoping to make inroads toward the top of the confer-ence.

Having completed the three-year transition to Division II, LU — a former founding member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) — anticipates increased success with nine starters returning on offense and 10 on defense.

Indeed, this is a veteran group in a young program. Lincoln enters just its third year of football since re-establishing the program for 2008. The program had disbanded in 1960. LU went 3-7 last year and picked up a win over a CIAA opponent with a 10-0 shutout of Livingstone.

The Lions will be led by their defenders, especially the lineback-ing corps. Juniors Brucelee Sterile and Brandon McElwee have combined for 184 and 177 tackles the last two seasons.

Offensively, sophomore quarterback Laquan Williams heads the offense. Entering last season fourth on the depth chart, the Philadelphia native started Lincoln’s last six games and continued to progress through spring ball. Sophomore speedy wideout Matthew Coston is the main threat on the outside. The 6-foot-1 target caught 29 balls including four touchdowns.

Two rivalry games highlight the out-of-conference schedule. The first is a Sunday showdown in the season opener Sep. 5 versus Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in what will be the Battle of the Firsts. Lincoln was the nation’s first historically black institution. Lincoln holds a 9-0-1 series edge including a 41-20 victory in the opener last year.

On Oct. 9, LU travels to NCAA Division I FCS school Howard to rekindle its oldest rivalry. The schools met in the Lions’ first football game in 1894, and the series is deadlocked 23-23-5. Lincoln won the last meeting, 12-8, in 1959.

Junior D’Ante Smith will see time as a receiver after two productive years in the backfield

PresidentIvory V. Nelson

11th Year

Ivory V. Nelson became the twelfth president of Lincoln University on August 15, 1999, bring-ing with him more than 40 years of experience in higher education, administration, research, and community service. At the time of his appointment by the Board of Trustees, Nelson served seven years as president of Central Washington University in Ellensburg. While at CWU, Nelson secured $185 million in state funding; the CWU Foundation honored him by establishing a $50,000 Ivory V. Nelson endowed graduate Fellowship in Chemistry; and the Board of Trustees conferred on him the title of President Emeritus. Prior to his work at CWU, Nelson served six years as chancellor of

Alamo Community College District where the Board of Trustees honored him for his distinguished service to the district and for his implementation of a $100 million capital improvements program. He also served one year as acting president of Prairie View A&M University, and three years as executive assistant to the chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. Nelson enjoyed a successful academic career that included receiving the Fulbright Lectureship, teaching gradu-ate and undergraduate chemistry, and serving as department head, assistant dean of academic affairs, and vice president for research. His career in the corporate sector includes assignments as a research chemist for both Union Carbide and American Oil Company. Lincoln University, founded in 1854, the nation’s first degree-granting HBCU, was in decline when Nelson stepped in and turned the institution around. Early in his tenure, he developed a five-year strategic plan with a clear vision support-ed by solid financial planning and phased construction. He eliminated operating deficits, audit findings, repaid outstanding loans and debt, removed Lincoln University from financial aid probation, secured $40.1 million financing through Insured AAA (A3 Underlying Rating) Bond Issuance, secured $27 million to renovate the University’s graduate Center in Philadel-phia, and secured over a quarter of a billion dollars in state funding for capital construction and renovation projects. He is featured in a 2003 issue of The Black Voices Quarterly, “Catalyst for Success: Chemist sparks Lincoln’s rebirth,” and in a 2005 issue of Main Line Today, “A Big Win at the Linc.” The new academic facilities and apartment-style residence hall enhance the University’s landscape and re-energized the campus and surrounding communities. Approximately $100 mil-lion (of the $250 million) is in the pipeline including a Wellness Center, athletic venues, and campus-wide landscaping with a pedestrian mall that will beacon students, alumni and visitors alike. Lincoln University has experienced unprecedented transformation and academic growth under Dr. Nelson’s leadership. He established a master development plan, imple-mented a new organizational structure, led a delegation of University administrators to review Rivers State University of Science and Technology in Rivers State, Nigeria, academically established five Centers of Academic Excellence in Science, Business, Teacher Education, Mass Communications, and Visual Arts, secured over $18 million in information technology improvements, increased faculty salaries, revised the University’s core curriculum, implemented a comprehensive outcomes assessment process for measuring student success and improving student retention, reduced all majors to a total of 120-124 semester credit hours, reduced the number of academic majors from 52 to 38, increased University enrollment, and, after 48 years, brought back football and established a marching band. Dr. Nelson has been involved in numerous public service and professional activities, including member of the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the National Association for Equal Op-portunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), the NCAA Division III Presidents Council, the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce College and University Presidents Council, the Brandywine Valley YMCA Board of Directors, and the Union League of Philadelphia. He is the recipient of numerous academic honors and civic awards including the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Education Leadership and Edu-cational Excellence Awards, the Philadelphia Tribune’s Philadelphia’s Most Influential African Americans Award, Harlem Week guardian of Our Legacy Award, The Delta Sigma Theta Legacy of Love Educational Excellence Award, and Miller’s gallery of greats. He has authored numerous technical publications, a chapter in one book and a chapter in a monograph. He is listed among the world’s top scientists in a book entitled, Distinguished African American Scientists of the 20th Century. A native of Curtis, Louisiana, he entered the United States Air Force after graduating from high school where he attained the rank of staff sergeant working in crypto analysis with top-secret cryptographic clearance. He received his B.S. degree from grambling State University (magna cum laude) and his Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry from the University of Kansas, Lawrence with high departmental honors.

2009 game by game

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Behind three touch-downs from an opportunistic defense and the leader-ship of a senior quarterback, Lincoln University (1-0) defeated rival Cheyney University (0-1) Saturday at Charles Martin Memorial Stadium at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, 41-20. The Wade Wilson Classic was the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) Game of the Week as it pit-ted two schools both claiming to be the first historically black colleges in the United States. It marked the first time the schools met since 1946. The win was Lincoln’s first over an NCAA oppo-nent since 1959 when the Lions defeated Howard, 12-8, on Thanksgiving. The program disbanded following the 1960 season and began competition last year by going 1-9, with the lone win coming against George Mason’s club team. Cheyney’s Stan Banks picked off Brandon Aus-tin (Greenville, N.C.) on the Lions’ first play from scrimmage and returned it 29 yards to the Lincoln 20. The Lion defense, though, held strong and only sur-rendered a field goal. Kareem Dennis (Philadelphia, Pa.), last year’s starting quarterback, entered Saturday third on the depth chart, but after three turnovers on Lincoln’s first four drives, the team’s first two quarterbacks found themselves deferring to the incumbent. Dennis immediately led the Lions on a seven-play, 78-yard drive capped by a 35-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Coston (Brooklyn N.Y.) 46 seconds into the second quarter. Dennis started his afternoon 8-for-8 for 134 yards and finished 11-for-21 with 139 yards and two scores. On the ensuing Cheyney drive, sophomore line-backer Deano Buycks (Euclid, Ohio) picked up a fum-ble and ran it back 65 yards to put the Lions up 13-3. Lincoln would add a 15-yard run by D’Ante Smith (Bowie, Md.) and another defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery, this time by Daron Jones (Baltimore, Md.) for a 27-3 lead. Cheyney, though would add a field goal as time expired in the first half, though Lincoln was still in firm control at 27-6. Carlos Velasquez (North Hills, Calif.) began Lion scoring the second half by returning a Malik White pass 48 yards for a touchdown just 52 seconds into the third quarter. Cheyney countered with a field goal midway through the third and defensive touchdown of its own. Ben Thompson sacked Dennis, picked up the loose ball and rumbled 50 yards to pay dirt, leaving Lincoln with a 34-20 advantage with 4:37 remaining. Freshman running back Chris Darby (Pittsburgh) iced the game with a 24-yard run with 2:19 to go. Dar-by led an impressive ground attack for Lincoln with 92 yards. D’Ante Smith finished with 90. Overall, Lincoln netted 223 yards on the ground.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — After an his-toric performance over Cheyney last week, the Lincoln University football team failed to capitalize on that po-tential momentum, falling 33-10 to the University of New Haven Saturday at Avon Grove High School. The Lions entered as the more experienced club with the Chargers of New Haven starting their first sea-son since 2003. In spirited play, New Haven jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first period after a Michael Herrera 42 yard field goal and a Demetrius Washington-Ellis nine-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Ryan Osieski. Things did not get any better for the Lions in the second quarter. A three-yard run from running back Andrew Nass followed by a Victor James 39 yard run gave New Haven a 23-0 cushion at the half. Lincoln struggled, earning only three first downs and just 34 total yards of offense compared to New Haven’s 239. Lincoln would get on the board in the third period thanks to Rahsaan Lisimba (Philadelphia) connecting on a 24 yard field goal. After coming out of the game twice due to injury, Nass answered with a one-yard run to go up 30-3. The third quarter was by far the best for the Lions, winning the frame, 10-7. Lincoln sustained a nice drive resulting in a Kareem Dennis (Philadelphia) one-yard strike to Trey Thomas (Canton, Ga./Woodstock) to make it 30-10. Dennis finished with 122 yards complet-ing 14 of 28 attempts. Lincoln could not hold the momentum in the final quarter with New Haven’s ground game eating up the clock. UNH held the ball for 10 minutes compared to Lincoln’s five. Herrera dialed in on his second field goal of the day en route to the Charger’s 33-10 lead. For New Haven, Osieski, who is a transfer from Louisville, threw for 247 yards and a touchdown, go-ing 22 for 33. Sharieff Hall was a recipient of eight of those passes for 119 yards. Nass had a solid day on the ground, churning out 84 yards on 22 carries. For the Lions, there were some bright spots. Bran-don McElwee (Gloucester City, N.J.) continued his stellar play from last year. The sophomore linebacker recorded 15 total tackles to go along with 2 sacks. His partner in crime, fellow linebacker Brucelee Sterile (Miami, Fla.) finished with 12 tackles.

Brandon Austin had 304 yards passing and 53 yards rushing in his return under center for Lincoln against Southern Virginia. The Lions improved to 2-1 by scoring 29 unanswered points.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — Welcome back, Brandon Austin (Greenville, N.C.). The Louisburg College transfer showcased his tal-ents by throwing for three touchdowns in a 29-8 Lin-coln (2-1) win Saturday over Southern Virginia (0-3) two weeks after starting his Lincoln career with two turnovers and a demotion. With Lincoln looking to bounce back from a 33-10 loss to New Haven last weekend, Austin got the start-ing nod. The win puts this year’s total to two, one better than last year’s season total. Austin overcame a slow start for a 17-for-34, 304-yard day. No. 7 also emerged as a dual-threat, leading the team with 74 yards on 17 carries. Two of his touch-down strikes went to 6-6 senior Kareem Dennis (Phil-adelphia, Pa.), who had replaced Austin under center in the win against Cheyney and moved to wide receiver this week. Lost in the performance by Austin was a defense that gave the offense multiple scoring opportunities, led by Anthony Bell (Atlanta, Ga.) and Jairon Bailey (Compton, Calif.) with two interceptions apiece. The win was exactly the kind of total team effort that Lincoln needed. The offense totaled 446 yards with the Lions defense holding Southern Virginia to 209 yards. For the Knights, Sam Trulock went 10-for-25 for 103 yards. Their leading rusher was Brandon Os-tler, who rushed for 57 yards on 8 rushes. An offensive struggle in the first period under the rainy skies at Avon Grove High School, neither school could muster much offense, with Lincoln earning the quarter’s only first downs (four). The Lions went for 80 yards to the Knights’ 24 yards of total offense. Lincoln could not take advantage of a Philip Jean-Juste (Miami, Fla.) 50-yard punt return in the middle of the quarter, continuing their first quarter woes. Three games in, the team has yet to score in the opening frame. Both teams were also plagued by the yellow flag in the first half. Lincoln was called on nine penalties for 48 yards, while Southern Virginia totaled 6 for 53 yards. The action started to pick up in the second. Tru-lock’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Bokinsky. A Trulock rush on the two point conversion gave the knights an 8-0 lead. Lincoln would return the favor after corner back Bailey picked off Bokinsky.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — Shaw scored seven second-half touchdowns for a 68-6 win at Avon Grove High School Saturday, breaking open a game that stood at 12-6 just after midway through the second quarter. First-time starter Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) successfully moved the ball down the field against the CIAA’s best defense, throwing for a touchdown in the second quarter. D’Ante Smith (Bowie, Md.) led Lincoln with 57 rushing yards. Playing in unquestionably its toughest game of 2009, the Lincoln University football team seemed to welcome Shaw University and the challenges at hand through the first half. Shaw, which had defeated Football Championship Series school Bethune-Cookman, 20-6, earlier this year, first got on the board one minute into the game af-ter Lincoln punter Ameer Allen (Trenton, N.J.) alertly kicked the ball out the back of the end zone following a high snap. On the ensuing Lincoln drive, Shaw’s Frederick Sparkman intercepted first-time starter Williams to set up a 44-yard field goal by Lyncon Shepherd. The Bears extended 5-0 advantage to 12-0 when Raymond Williams scored the first of his three rush-ing touchdowns on a pivotal fourth-and-two with 2:36 to go in the first quarter. The second quarter, once again, proved to be Lincoln’s strongest period. As the first quarter closed, Justin James (Philadelphia, Pa.) recovered a fumble by Shaw quarterback Travis Robinson on fourth and goal from the three and returned to it Shaw’s 33 yard line. Williams showed poise while leading the Lions down the field and capped the drive with a five-yard toss to Matthew Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to make the score 12-6. Shaw, though, responded with a workmanlike 12-play, 41-yard drive touchdown drive when Aaron El-lison scored from two yards out for his first of three touchdowns for a 19-6 advantage heading into the in-termission.

2009 game by gameWeek 5--Livingstone; Saturday Sept. 26, Salisbury. N.C.

D’Ante Smith had a career-high 114 yards in becoming the first Lion rusher to surpass the 100-yard mark since the program resumed play in 2008.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Lincoln got several key firsts Saturday against Livingstone College with a 10-0 victory in Salisbury, N.C. The win marked the Lions’ (3-2, 1-1 CIAA) first victory against a CIAA opponent and first road win since reinstating the program in 2008. The Lions were led by a ground game that broke off several big plays, led by Trey Thomas (Canton, Ga.) and D’Ante Smith (Bowie, Md.). Smith had 114 rushing yards and became the first Lincoln player to surpass 100 yards since the program resumed play in 2008. Thomas had 85 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown scamper. The Lions finished with a season-high 267 yards rushing, besting the previous high of 223 against Cheyney. Defensively, Lincoln was masterful against the run, surrending just 4 yards. Brucelee Sterile (Miami, Fla.) and Brandon McElwee (Gloucester City, N.J.) had eight tackles apiece and combined for six tackles for loss. For the second-straight week, Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) got the start under center for an ail-ing Brandon Austin (Greenville, N.C.). The true fresh-man threw for 116 yards in a soggy contest that saw rain from the opening kickoff through the final whistle. Livingstone (0-5, 0-2 CIAA) came into the game surrendering 297 yards on the ground. Lincoln held the lead from their opening posses-sion when Rashaan Lisimba (Philadelphia, Pa.) kicked a 29-yard field goal capping a 35-yard drive. In the second half, Lincoln struggled to move the football. Midway through the third quarter, Livingstone attempted to score on a fourth-and-goal from the 8-yard-line but an errant pass gave the defense a clutch stop, preserving the 3-0 lead. Taking over deep in their own territory, Lincoln manufactured its most impressive drive of the year. Smith broke off a 63-yard run and Thomas finished off the 92-yard drive with a 27-yard touchdown rush of his own. Livingstone’s last scoring threat came with eight minutes left in the game. On first-and-goal from the one, quarterback Steven Williams fumbled on a sneak.

2009 game-by-gameWeek 6--Bowie State; Saturday Oct. 3, West Grove, Pa.

Laquan Williams threw for 214 yards and two touchdown pass-es in his best game as the signal caller for the Lions against Bowie State.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – A promising start gave way to an impressive Bowie State surge as the Lincoln University (3-3) football team fell 51-20 Sat-urday afternoon at Avon Grove High School in West Grove, Pa. True freshman Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) got his third start under center and had his best performance, going 24 for 44 for 214 yards with two touchdowns. Anthony Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa.) caught two touchdown passes for two of his 3 catches for 74 yards. The ever-versatile Trey Thomas (Canton, Ga.) threw for a score, caught 11 passes for 78 yards and rushed for another 19 yards. Bowie State showcased the CIAA’s best rushing attack, entering averaging 200 yards a game. Against Lincoln, they ran for 261 yards and 2 scores, led by Ra-mano Flowers’ 102 yards on six carries. After enjoying a game of firsts last weekend in their 10-0 victory over Livingstone, Lincoln University hoped to grab its second straight victory for the first time since returning to the field last season. Things got off to a quick start for the Lions. On Bowie’s first play from scrimmage, a handoff to lead-ing CIAA rusher Rodney Webb resulted in a forced fumble by defensive end John Mason (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The offensive would capitalize with a 14-yard Williams strike to Matthew Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) for one of his four catches for 45 yards. Bowie answered back after an errant snap on a Lincoln punt attempt. Webb took a 15-yard screen pass en route to a diving play towards the end zone to give the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead. The Lions would regain the lead quickly after a trick play caught Bowie’s defense off guard. Thomas connected with fellow wide-out Wilson on a 57-yard touchdown. Lincoln kept momentum on its side when Gerald Foster (PG County, Md.) intercepted Tyrae Reid on Bowie’s fourth possession with less than five minutes remaining in the first quarter. However, Lincoln’s drive stalled, and Bowie State’s high-powered offense got rolling. Two touchdown passes from Reid to Larry Dixon and Dominique Budd and a one-yard run by Reid made it 27-12 heading into the half. Bowie State got the second half started with a 60-yard rushing touchdown by Budd to add to its lead. Williams continued to show poise in the pocket leading Lincoln to a five-yard pass to Wilson, to pull within 17 points with a score of 37-20 in the fourth. Bowie ended any chance of a Lincoln comeback behind Seth Minter’s 38-yard kick off return and a one-yard leaping touchdown by Tariq Jones to give them the 51-20 edge.

2009 game by gameWeek 7--Virginia Union; Saturday Oct. 10, West Grove, Pa.

Gerald Foster took control of the race for most interceptions in 2009 by recording two against Virginia Union, both coming in the second quarter of the Homecoming game. He now has four.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania football team dropped a 35-6 decision to Virginia Union during its second an-nual Homecoming game since the program’s reinstate-ment in 2008. A packed crowd came out to support the Lions at Avon Grove High School in West Grove. The Lions (3-4) had a rough start as Virginia Union (4-3) scored three first-quarter touchdowns and sopho-more Anthony Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa.) caught a 55 -yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Bran-don Austin (Greenville, N.C.) with a 1:13 remaining in the first half to get Lincoln on the board. Gerald Foster (P.G. County, Md.) helped a Lin-coln defense that grounded VUU’s aerial attack, picking off two passes in the second quarter. The sophomore linebacker also had nine tackles. It was Austin’s first appearance since his 304-yard day against Southern Virginia in week three of the season. He split repetitions with starting quarterback freshman Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.), who went 10-for-19 finishing with 80 passing and 33 rush-ing yards. Sophomore Matthew Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Lions in receptions with five for 65 yards. Freshman Philip Jean-Juste (Miami, Fla.) had four punt returns with a season-high return of 26 yards and a fumble recovery. Several players, in addition to Foster, had great defensive days. Brucelee Sterile (Miami, Fla.) finished with 13 tackles and a sack. Sterile also had two tackles for a combined loss of eight yards. Other key players for the defense included junior Jairon Bailey (Comp-ton, Calif.) with eight tackles and sophomore Brandon McElwee (Gloucester City, N.J.) with six tackles. Fos-ter finished with two interceptions for the Lions while Timothy Green (Fanwood, N.J.) had a forced fumble that set up McElwee’s fumble recovery with 13 minutes and one second left at the start of the second quarter. Virginia Union (4-3) was led by running back Christopher Smith and Trevon Winston. Winston had two touchdowns and 71 yards rushing for the Pan-thers and Smith carried the ball 28 times for 166 yards and two scores of his own.

2009 game-by-gameWeek 8--Elizabeth City State; Saturday Oct. 17, Elizabeth City, N.C.

Senior Trey Thomas caught four passes for 70 yards, including a touchdown and a two-point conversion against Elizabeth City State.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Lincoln’s search for a fourth win will have to wait another week, as Eliz-abeth City State defended its home turf with a 54-18 win Saturday at Roebuck Stadium. Trey Thomas (Canton, Ga.) caught four passes for 70 yards and Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, PA/John Bartram) went 11-for-21, two touchdowns and 167 yards as the Lions dropped their third straight con-test, falling to 3-5 on the year and 1-4 in the CIAA. Wil-liams was also Lincoln’s leading rusher with 52 yards. Defensively, Brandon McElwee (Gloucester City, N.J.) continued his monster season, racking up 15 tack-les, forcing a fumble and blocking a punt that resulted in a safety in the second quarter. The loss stings, but in the first meeting between the two schools last year, ECSU spoiled Lincoln’s Homecoming game by running away with a 70-6 vic-tory. This year, Lincoln moved the ball down the field and accumulated 280 yards of total offense on the Vi-kings’ Homecoming game. In the first half, three Lion drives stalled from in-side the ECSU 30 because of two interceptions and a fumble, resulting in a 27-2 deficit, LU’s only points coming when McElwee blocked a Daniel Mendez punt with 2:33 remaining in the first half. In the second half, Lincoln finished drives with points. Thomas scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Williams with 3:44 to play in the third quarter. Williams subsequently ran in the two-point conver-sion. On Lincoln’s subsequent drive, Williams connect-ed with Kareem Dennis (Philadelphia, Pa.) on a seam route from 30 yards out. It took Lincoln just three plays to traverse the 57 yards needed to find pay dirt. LU con-verted another two-point play when Philip Jean-Juste (Miami, Fla.) connected with Thomas. Unfortunately, the quick-strike capability came too late. The Vikings first scored with 6:05 remaining when Dexter Manley caught a nine-yard pass from Crevan Powell. Four minutes into the second quarter, Daronte McNeil scampered in from four yards. After a Lincoln three-and-out, Reggie Smith had a 50-yard punt return for a touchdown, the first of two special teams touch-downs for the Vikings. Justin Hamilton ran back the ensuing kickoff following Lincoln’s first touchdown.

2009 game by gameWeek 9--Virginia State; Saturday Oct. 24, West Grove, Pa.

D’Ante Smith ran for a 20-yard touchdown in the fourth quar-ter against Virginia State. It was the back’s first visit to paydirt since the second quarter of the opening game with Cheyney.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — Lincoln (3-6) pieced together two fourth quarter scores, but Virginia State (5-4) staved off the flurry with its own big plays for a 34-14 win Saturday at Avon Grove High School in West Grove, Pa.

Lincoln scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper by Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) to cut the deficit to 13-7 with 13:19 remaining, marking the first LU points in six meetings with the Trojans.

The Trojans and the Lions traded three-and-outs, and the Lions were positioned for another big defensive stop, but on third and nine, wide receiver Corey Young took a screen pass, and with some blocks, cashed in for 75-yard touchdown with 9:36 to go.

On Lincoln’s ensuing possession, Shawn Bethea (Piscataway, NJ) delivered what may have been the LU play of the year. Williams’ pass sailed deep down the visitor sideline but was picked off by Howard Spencer, but Bethea stripped Spencer as the defensive back reeled in the pick and cradled the ball in a fluid motion, ripping it from the defender’s hands.

The effort went for naught two plays later when Alfred Ngauja jumped a comeback pattern along the home sideline. After a couple of nifty spins and broken tackles, he had a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 27-7 lead.

Williams, though, refused to be rattled and showed resiliency not found in most true freshmen. As the Lions have done all year, they continued to fight.

Williams turned to senior Trey Thomas (Canton, Ga.) twice for a first down to the Lincoln 48. Later in the drive, Thomas caught a 13-yard pass to set up Lincoln at the Virginia State 38. Matthew Coston (Brooklyn, NY) then took a wide receiver screen 17 yards. Sophomore back D’Ante Smith (Bowie. MD) made several cuts and beat a defender to the pylon for a 20-yard touchdown run for a 34-14 game with 5:01. The drive took eight plays and went 63 yards. Smith led LU with 48 rushing yards.

Virginia State, though, went on a scoring drive of its own when Rahoo Walker punched in a rush from four yards out with 2:04 to go. He eclipsed the century mark with 101 yards in the rainy affair.

Brandon McElwee led Lincoln with 13 tackles, four of which were unassisted in Lincoln’s final road game of the year

SOUTH HILL, Va. — Lincoln’s defense stood up and limited St. Paul’s to 24 passing yards, but offensive miscues proved insurmountable in a 16-6 loss Saturday at Parkview High School. With the loss, Lincoln finishes 2009 with a 3-7 record, a two-win improvement from last year’s inaugural campaign.

Timothy Green (Fanwood) routinely harassed the Tiger backfield with seven stops, two sacks for 13 yards, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Justin James (Philadelphia, Pa. Roxborough) forced two balls to the turf as well, one of which was recovered by Eugene Lancaster (Virginia Beach, Va.) late in the fourth quarter.

Brandon McElwee (Gloucester City, N.J.) recorded 13 tackles and two for losses while Brucelee Sterile (Miami, Fla.) had eight stops.

Overall, the defense had 11 stops behind the line for a total of 58 yards and three sacks for 22 yards. The two sophomore linebackers fought for the season lead in tackles all year, and Sterile held on despite McElwee’s brilliant play Saturday, 88-87.

Offensively, though, Lincoln struggled to maintain possession, and the Tigers proved opportunistic, recording eight interceptions and one fumble recovery.

D’Ante Smith (Bowie. Md.) continued to show signs of growth late, building off his 48-yard performance last week by rushing for 60 yards on 14 carries. Trey Thomas (Canton, Ga.) again led the receivers with five receptions for 46 yards and Lincoln’s lone touchdown, a four-yard catch on a roll-out from quarterback Laquan Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 8:01 left in the third quarter.

The tone was set early in the game when Lincoln fumbled the exchange between Williams and Smith set up a 14-yard run by Jermaine Williams with 20 seconds into the game.

Lincoln held after an impressive march by the Tigers on SPC’s second drive of the game, a drive kept alive when quarterback Korey Rose picked up a fourth and eight on a scramble. After driving inside the Lincoln five, the Tigers got called for a holding, and Ronald Love (Plainfield, N.J.) sacked Rose on third and goal.

About the CIAA The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) is an athletic conference consisting of twelve historically African-American institutions of higher education and one majority university: Bowie State University, Chowan Uni-versity, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Livingstone College, St. Augustine’s College, St. Paul’s College, Shaw University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University and Winston-Salem State University, all working together to set an overall standard of excel-lence. Established in 1912, the CIAA is the nation’s oldest black athletic conference, rich in history and heritage. The CIAA is entering its ninety-ninth year of athletic competition in which they will continue to reap success and recogni-tion on the field and on the court. The presence of the CIAA as a premiere member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, continues to expand throughout the country. Expansion of television broadcasts has resulted in nationwide coverage of football and basketball contests, as well as the annual CIAA Basketball Tournament. Increasing competitiveness in other sports is also leading to recognition of CIAA member schools as athletic power-houses. The reputation, in conjunction with the academic success of our athletes, is a proud legacy for the CIAA. The conference is divided into Northern and Southern Divisions in all sports except baseball. The CIAA annu-ally sponsors 16 men’s and women’s championships. The eight men’s championships include football, cross country, in-door track, basketball, golf, tennis, baseball, and track & field. The eight women’s champions are bowling, cross country, volleyball, indoor track, basketball, softball, tennis and track & field.

Sports Info. and MarketingChris Weeden

2nd Year

Chris Weeden enters his second year as the Director of Sports Information and Marketing at Lincoln University after spending two years at the University of Sioux Falls. He is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of athletic media and marketing plans and serves as the primary media contact for Lincoln’s 17 sports. In addition to serving as a me-dia contact for 17 sports, he coordinated game scripts and was involved heavily in sponsorship sales and marketing efforts. The 2008 football team highlighted his tenure, winning the NAIA

national championship in Rome, Ga., with a 14-0 campaign. At the University of Sioux Falls, Weeden worked as the Marketing and Promotions and Sports Information Director where he was a part of the university’s transition from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to NCAA Division II. As part of these efforts, Weeden earned a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Sioux Falls in 2009 with a master’s project in strategic planning and market positioning. A 2007 Penn State graduate, Weeden holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a sports emphasis and a political science minor. From 2004-2007, he worked as a staff member for Penn State’s independent paper The Daily Collegian, culminating in positions as the assistant sports editor and night sports editor. In the summer of 2006, he interned at The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review as a sports reporter and that fall in-terned at Fight on State, a magazine and Web site covering Penn State athletics. A native of Stony Brook, N.Y. on Long Island, he resides in Wilmington, Del.

Media Relalations Policies

The Office of Sports Information serves as the liaison between Lincoln University student-athletes and the media. We handle all of the media’s needs, including setting up interviews, maintaining statistics, coordinating photographs and organizing and updating the historical records of Lincoln University athletics. Lincoln University’s Office of Sports Information attempts to protect student-athletes, as well as promote their achievements. This is accomplished, with your cooperation, by use of media guides, press releases, website stories, pho-tographs, newspaper articles and other media interviews and promotional plans developed with your coach. They also compile biographical and statistical information about you during your career at Lincoln University. When a student-athlete is interviewed, a member of the Office of Sports Information should be present, even if it is a telephone interview. All student-athletes are representing Lincoln University, both on the field and off the field. Lincoln student-athletes have an obligation to speak with the press after games, win or lose. If student-athletes are uncomfortable talking about a specific topic (health, family, etc.), please let the Office of Sports Information know ahead of time. Lincoln University student-athletes are not obliged to talk about the past or any-thing that is not related to Lincoln athletics unless you want to. The Lincoln University Office of Sports Information provides game programs, updated rosters, current team and individual statistics, box scores and statistics for every game of the season. Photo arrangements, media passes and broad-cast inquiries should be made through the Office of Sports Information. Meals are not provided unless Lincoln University is hosting a postseason contest. Complete boxscores with play-by-play will be distributed following the conclusion of the game. Those desiring phone, fax and internet service prior to or following the game should contact the office at least 24 hours in advance.

Credentials & ParkingWorking press credentials and parking passes may be obtained by calling the Office of Sports Information. Requests should be made no later than two days prior to the scheduled contest. There is ample parking in the lot adjacent to Manuel Rivero Hall.
