The George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility, already considered one of the top sites in the Southeast for outdoor collegiate track competition, was improved as part of Georgia Tech’s preparation for the Centennial Olympic Games. Griffin Track was renovated with a sate-of-the-art Mondo surface, similar to those used at Olympic Stadiums and at the sites of the World Championship, U.S. Track and Field Indoor Championships and NCAA Outdoor Championships. The track was the workout track for the Olympic Village, which offered Tech the opportunity to renovate its facilities. Fifteen Griffin Track records (eight women’s and seven men’s marks) were set at the 1996 Georgia Tech-Reebok Invitational, the first event held on the new surface. The Georgia Tech track team’s locker rooms were also renovated as part of the $10 million re-creation of the Alexander Memorial Coliseum, which served as the boxing venue during the Games. In addition to Griffin Track’s state of the art surface and locker rooms, the facility is enhanced by a scenic location, which combines natural beauty with Atlanta’s modern skyline. The eight-lane, ultramodern Griffin Track is located between Tech’s Rose Bowl practice football fields and the Bill Moore Tennis Center on Fowler Street. Griffin Track was originally built in the summer of 1985 and remains one of the few tracks in the United States that meet international standards. The facility is named after national Hall of Fame coach George C. Griffin, who guided both the Yellow Jacket track and cross country programs from 1921-25 and 1934-43 and remained the cross country coach until 1974. The Tech track and field program experienced unprecedented success during the Griffin era, winning six Southeastern Athletic Association Championships and one Southeastern Conference Championship. Griffin also guided the cross country team to new heights, winning 10 SEC titles, including six in a row from 1935-40. Two of Griffin’s athletes competed in the Olympic Games. Homer Welchel competed in the javelin in 1924, and Ed Hamm won a Gold medal and set a world record in the long jump in 1928.

Morris Bryan Stadium, which completes the George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility, provides the Ram-bling Wreck with one of the finest total track and field complexes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The facilities at Morris Bryan Stadium include a 1,500-seat grandstand along with judges stands, a press box, concession stands, storage areas and restrooms. The grandstands bring fans close to the action and give them an excellent view of the track as well as the Atlanta skyline. The area around the track is magnificent, as you can see the Atlanta skyscrapers and the Tech Tower. The stadium’s namesake, the late Morris Bryan, is the former president of the Jefferson Mills. A 1941 graduate of Georgia Tech, Bryan competed for three years as a hurdler on legendary coach George Griffin’s track teams. Bryan was widely known as the “Father of the Georgia Olympics,” an all=classification state high school track and field championship meet that has been held in Jefferson, Ga., since 1972. “The family and company wanted to make a first-class facility,” said Tom Bryan. “We are highly hon-ored to name the stadium in memory of my brother.” The stadium was officially dedicated when Tech hosted the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the first time in school history in April 1987. A contribution from the Bryan family and Jefferson Mills in large part funded the building of the stadium. Former Director of Track Buddy Fowlkes also solicited donations from Tech track and field alumni. Donors have had their names etched on a plaque and were honored at the dedication ceremony.

Head Coach | 16th Season | Ferris State ‘76A 2003 inductee into Ferris State University’s Hall of Fame, Grover Hins-

dale enters his 30th season at Georgia Tech and 16th as head coach of the men’s

track and field team.

The Yellow Jackets have posted seven top-10 indoor and outdoor NCAA

Championship finishes during Hinsdale’s tenure. He was named Atlantic Coast Con-

ference Indoor Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2008 and has tutored three Olympic

Gold Medalists, 13 NCAA champions and 73 All-Americans.

Among the group of talented athletes that struck gold is Derrick Adkins,

who won Olympic gold in 1996, and was a two-time national champion and six-

time All-American during his Tech career. A second Olympic medalist is Derek Mills,

who won gold as part of the 4x400 relay team in Atlanta. He was a four-time na-

tional champion and an 11-time All-American for the Jackets. The third Olympic gold

medalist is Angelo Taylor, who won gold in the 400 intermediate hurdles at the

2000 Sydney Games. He won two national titles and was a four-time All-American

during his career on The Flats.

Other top runners under Hinsdale include Octavius Terry, a three-time

national champion and nine-time All-American; Jonas Motiejunas, a two-time na-

tional champion and five-time All-American; and David Krummenacker, a two-time

national champion and eight-time All-American. Krummenacker is currently one of

the top middle distance runners in the world.

In 2009, Hinsdale led the Jackets to their best finish in school history

at the NCAA East Regional Championships in fifth and also saw his team regiser a

fourth place finish in the ACC Outdoor Championships, the teams highest finish since

2005. Also, three Yellow Jackets qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships,

with Steve Marcelle registering All-American honors in the shot put, a first for a Tech

athlete.

In 2008, Hinsdale led the men’s squad to a second-place finish at the

ACC Indoor Championships, the programs best finish since placing second at the

1988 Indoor Championships in Johnson City, Tenn. He was named the 2008 ACC

Indoor Coach of the Year in a vote conducted by the league’s coaches.

In 2005, the Yellow Jackets tallied a pair of fifth-place finishes at the

indoor and outdoor ACC Championships. The Jackets posted their first indoor NCAA

finish, since the 2002 season, finishing in a tie for 48th place. Senior Montrell

Person garnered All-Amerca honors in the 60-meter high hurdles.

Hinsdale guided Tech to fourth- and fifth-place finishes at the outdoor

and indoor ACC Championships in 2004. The Rambling Wreck tallied 103 points at

the outdoor meet, the second highest tally by a Jacket squad in the history of the

program. A total of five ACC titles were won by Yellow Jackets and seven garnered

All-ACC accolades. Senior Brendon Mahoney captured four ACC crowns en route to

being named indoor and outdoor ACC Performer of the Year. Mahoney and junior

Montrell Person went on to earn

All-America honors at the Outdoor NCAA Championships, becoming the 68th and

69th athletes to do so under Hinsdale’s watch.

In 2003, Hinsdale led the Jackets to their second consecutive top-three

finish at the Indoor ACC Championships. Six Tech athletes earned All-ACC honors with

distance runner Kyle Rabbit earning the accolade in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters.

Junior Brendon Mahoney claimed All-ACC honors for the third straight year in the

mile, while seniors Bryan Swarn and Brian Fraser captured conference accolades at

At the Outdoor ACC Championships, the Yellow Jackets scored 96 points

to tie for fourth place. Brewer and Fraser captured individual ACC titles in the ham-

mer throw and triple jump, while the 4x400-meter relay team of Brian Ford, Sharif

Azim, Matt Trester and Swarn took first place at the championship. The Jackets

qualified five athletes for the Outdoor NCAA Championships, plus the 4x400 relay

team. Brewer claimed All-America honors, finishing 13th in the hammer throw.

Hinsdale garnered his first ACC Coach of the Year honor when he guided

the Jackets to a third-place finish at the conference championship in 2002. That

season, three Jackets earned All-America honors under Hinsdale’s tutelage, as

Brendon Mahoney was seventh at the NCAA Championships in the indoor mile, and

Chris Sinotte placed 10th in the javelin at the outdoor meet. Bryan Swarn was 11th

in the outdoor 400.

In 2000, Hinsdale coached the men’s outdoor 4x400 relay team to

a sixth place finish at the NCAA Championships, and also had two individual All-

Americans as Bryan Swarn (400 meters) and Malcolm Leason (triple jump) earned

that distinction. Following the 2000 NCAA meet, Tech athletes had competed in the

NCAA Championship meet for 17 consecutive years.

He has put his stamp on the Tech program by coaching 13 NCAA

national champions in 12 years as head coach on The Flats.

Hinsdale came to Tech in September 1979 as an assistant track coach, a

position he held for 13 years under the legendary mentor Buddy Fowlkes. He was

promoted to assistant head track coach in 1992 and was named head coach the

following year.

He led Tech to a seventh-place NCAA Indoor Championship finish and

an eighth-place NCAA Outdoor Championship finish during the 1998 season. That

year, the Jackets produced three national champions, as Krummenacker won the

indoor 800 meters, Taylor captured the outdoor 400 intermediate hurdles, and the

men’s outdoor 4x400 relay team captured the NCAA title with a time of 3:01.89.

Krummenacker also ran the fastest American mile that year, while Taylor captured

the Track & Field News Male Athlete of the Year award, while finishing with the

second fastest time in the world in the 400 intermediate hurdles with his time of

47.90 seconds. Krummenacker capped his career by winning MVP awards at both

the indoor and outdoor ACC Championship meet, which marked the third and fourth

times, respectively, he was honored in his career.

At the 1997 NCAA Indoor Championships, Hinsdale guided Tech to its

best national finish ever, as the Yellow Jackets tied for third place with 25 points.

That season Tech was led by David Krummenacker, who won the 800 meters and

then teamed with Tomas Motiejunas, Michael Johnson and Angelo Taylor to finish

sixth in the 4x400. Taylor also finished third in the 400 meters. Eric Bowers also

placed third in the long jump.

During Hinsdale’s first full season in 1994, he guided Tech to fourth

place at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. After claiming national titles in the 400

meters, 400 intermediate hurdles and 4x400 relay, the Jackets tallied 34 points,

Tech’s highest total ever.

A former decathlete at Ferris State, Hinsdale now coaches the 400m,

400m IH and 4x400m relay. His first 14 years with Tech were spent in the field

events.

Some of the top field performers under Hinsdale include Rich Thomp-

son, a three-time All-American in the triple jump; Mark White, an All-American

discus thrower who won two ACC Championships in the discus and was the 1990

ACC Champion in the shotput. Other top athletes are Eric Bowers, the 1995 and

1996 ACC champion and current ACC record holder in the long jump; along with Joe

McDonald, who broke the school record in the decathlon for the third straight time

in 1992 and was the ACC indoor long jump champion in 1991.

Overall, Hinsdale has guided three Olympic gold medalists, three world

champions, seven USA Track and Field champions, four Goodwill Games medalists,

13 NCAA national champions, 71 All-Americans, 86 ACC champions and 172 All-ACC

honorees. A total of 127 All-America honors have been earned by men’s track and

field athletes at Georgia Tech.

An excellent recruiter, Hinsdale has brought many top prospects to At-

lanta, including state champions from Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho,

Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina,

Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia.

These talented signees include All-Americans James Purvis, Mike Armor,

Dirk Morris, Rich Thompson, Conrad Nichols, Chris Sinotte, Adkins, Mills, Terry, Taylor

and the Motiejunas brothers.

A Sand Creek, Mich., native, Hinsdale lettered four years in track and

field at Ferris State. He won the Coaches Award twice and was elected team captain

three-straight years. Hinsdale was inducted into the school Hall of Fame on Sept.

Distance Coach | 20th Season | Georgia Tech ‘87Alan Drosky is entering his 16th season as the head coach of the Georgia

Tech women’s track and field program. He also mentors the distance runners for the Yellow Jackets’ men’s track team. Additionally, Drosky recently completed his 18th year as the head coach of both the men’s and women’s cross country teams at Georgia Tech. Drosky, a two-time All-American and five-time track All-Atlantic Coast Confer-ence performer, has been head women’s coach since the 1995-96 season. He has been a part of the Yellow Jacket coaching staff since 1987, when he took a graduate assistant position while working towards a master’s degree in management. After completing his graduate studies in 1989, Drosky became a full-time assistant for the 1990 season and took over the helm of the cross country program in ‘91. Prior to earning a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial management in ‘87, Drosky was one of the most decorated middle distance performers in Tech history. He competed for the Yellow Jackets from 1985-87, serving as team captain three times. He holds the Tech school record in both the 1000 (2:22.78) and 1500 (3:43.37) meter indoor events, and is a member of Tech’s outdoor record-holding 4x1600-meter relay (16:32.98). Drosky earned All-America honors twice at the NCAA Championships, finishing sixth in the indoor mile in 1986 and 12th in the outdoor 1500 meters in 1987. He was also the 1987 ACC champion in the indoor mile. Following his distinguished career, Drosky was inducted into the Georgia Tech Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. Since taking the reins of the women’s program, Drosky has guided the Yellow Jackets to seven top-three finishes in the last eight years at the ACC Indoor Championships, including the program’s first ACC title at the 2002 indoor ACC meet. It was just the second ACC title by any women’s program at Georgia Tech and snapped nine consecutive indoor titles by North Carolina. Drosky was named Indoor ACC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career (1999). The Jackets have been a mainstay atop the ACC standings, posting a combined nine top-three finishes at the indoor and outdoor ACC meets since 2001. Tech scored a program-best 146 points at the outdoor meet in 2004. Nationally, Drosky led the Yellow Jackets to their highest NCAA outdoor finish at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships, finishing in a tie for 15th place in Austin, Texas, and highest indoor finish in 2007, 14th-place. Tech posted a second top-25 finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing in a tie for 21st place in Fayetteville, Ark. The Yellow Jackets posted a pair of top-25 finishes in `05, repeating its 21st-place indoor finish and finishing 18th at the outdoor meet. Drosky has led Tech to a total of 10 top-30 finishes, including two top-15 finishes at the NCAA Championships. Chaunte Howard became the first Tech athlete to win three consecutive national titles, claiming the NCAA high jump crown at the indoor and outdoor NCAA Champi-onships in `04, and winning the crown again at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships. Howard became the first women’s athlete to qualify for the Summer Olympic Games, finishing second at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in the high jump to stamp her ticket to Athens, Greece. On a rare off day, Howard finished in a tie for 28th place at the XXVIII Olympiad. She turned professional in the summer of 2005, after her junior season, and went on to win a Silver medal in the high jump at the 2005 IAAF World Champion-ships, in Helsinki, Finland. In addition to his mentoring of the women’s program, Drosky has also coached several of the nation’s top men’s distance performers. Headlining that list is David Krummenacker, who won the 1997 and `98 NCAA indoor 800-meter national titles, still holds four different school records and was named the 1997 and `98 ACC Indoor and Outdoor Championship MVP while at Tech. Under Drosky, Krummenacker won 12 individual ACC titles and captured the U.S. 800-meter national title in 2001. He has gone on to win a two more U.S. national titles in the 800 (2002-03) and captured a World indoor 800 title in 2003. Krummenacker ranks as the fastest American 800-1500-meter doubler of all-time and set the American record in the indoor 1000 meters in 2002. Recent graduate Brendon Mahoney ranks among Drosky’s finest proteges. He was a three-time All-American and finished seventh in the mile at the 2002 NCAA Indoor

Championships. He also finished eighth in the 800 at the 2002 U.S. National Outdoor Champion-ships, a race won by Krummenacker. In 2004, Mahoney won ACC titles in the indoor 800 and mile, and the outdoor 800 and 1500 meter races en route to being named ACC Performer of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. He went on to earn All-America honors in the 1500 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Drosky’s top women’s competitors include Tech assistant coach Becky Megesi and former standout Renee Metivier. Megesi garnered All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 1500 meters in 1999 and was a member of the seventh-place distance medley team in 2000. She won the ACC outdoor 1500-meter title in both 1998 and `99 and qualified for the NCAA Championship meet in both the 800 and 1500 meters in 1999, as well as the 800 in 2000. Metivier had an outstanding 2002, becoming the first Jacket to earn All-America hon-ors in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. During the indoor season, she earned that status in the 3000 and 5000 meters. She also claimed All-America accolades with an eighth-place finish in the 5000 at the outdoor NCAA meet. Metivier now holds four school records. Beth Mallory also earned All-America honors under Drosky, placing sixth in the mile at the 1996 NCAA Indoor Championships. In his career, Drosky has coached his athletes to three national titles as Krummen-acker won two in the 800 and Conrad Nichols won one in the 4x400m relay. His athletes have earned 66 NCAA All-American honors, 94 ACC championships and 200 All-ACC accolades. In cross country, Drosky has also led the team to success in one of the nation’s top cross country conferences. He has guided the women’s team to a pair of NCAA Championship appearances (2000, `01), with a top finish of 26th in ‘01. That same season, he coached the women’s team to their first-ever NCAA South Region crown, and was named South Region Coach of the Year. The Jackets’ men’s team also enjoyed a program-best finish of fourth at the 2001 regional championships. His top ACC finishes came in 1994 with both teams finishing third at the conference championships in Atlanta. Drosky has mentored three cross country All-Americans and seven NCAA individual qualifiers. Additionally, he has guided Tech runners to 15 All-ACC and 34 all-region performances. Metivier enjoyed the top season in Tech cross country history in 2001, finishing second at the NCAA Championships, winning the NCAA South Regional title and placing second at the ACC Championships. Mallory earned All-America honors in 1995, placing 25th, and also earned All-ACC honors three times. Additionally, Megesi was an individual qualifier in ‘98. On the men’s side, Kevin Graham is the lone All-American in Tech history, finishing 32nd in ‘94. Senior Kyle Rabbitt earned All-ACC honors in cross country at the 2004 ACC Champi-onships, finishing 14th. Rabbitt is the third Tech athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in 2003. A native of Riverdale, Ga., and a former Georgia state champion in the mile at River-dale High School, Drosky is married to the former Kim Bohanon, who ran cross country at Georgia State. The couple has two daughters: Hayley, 16, and Hannah, 13.

Jumps/Hurdles Coach | 14th Season | Cal Poly ‘91

Nat Page is in his 14th year as an assistant coach for the Georgia Tech track and field program. Page is responsible for coaching field events, including high jump, long jump and triple jump, as well as the men’s and women’s sprint hurdle events.

Since joining the Tech staff in 1996, Page has mentored Tech student-athletes to 37 ACC titles, 39 All-America performances and four national titles. Page was named the NCAA South Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008, and the Mondo Women’s Jumps/Multi Events Coach of the Year in 2004.

The most recent Jackets to benefit from Page’s training have been Terrence Tram-mell, Shantia Moss, Fatmata Fofanah and James Lemons II. Trammell, the 2009 USA Indoor 60-meter hurdle national champion, earned silver medals in the 110-meter hurdles at both the 2007 and 2009 World Championships under Page’s tutelage. Moss, the 2007 60-meter hurdles NCAA Champion, earned four All-American honors in her time on the Flats. Fofanah, a two-time All-American in the hurdles, represented Guinea at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Lemons became a two-time ACC Field MVP and three-time All-American under Page’s teachings.

One of his latest prodigies, Chaunte Howard, captured three consecutive national titles in the women’s high jump at the 2004 indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships, and ‘05 indoor NCAA Championships. She became the first women’s athlete to qualify for the Sum-mer Olympics, finishing second at the ‘04 U.S. Olympic Trials, earning a spot on the U.S. team. Howard won the high jump at the ‘08 U.S. Olympic trials, and went on to place sixth at the 2008 Beijing games. She won the Gold medal at the 2009 U.S. Outdoor National Champion-ships this past summer in Eugene, Ore.

In Athens, Greece, Howard finished in a tie for 28th place on a rare off day. She ended her career at Tech as a six-time ACC champion, six-time All-American, three-time NCAA champion and three-time ACC Most Valuable Performer. Howard signed a professional contract with NIKE, forgoing her senior season, but continues to train under Page and attend classes at Tech. She went on to earn a Silver medal at the 10th IAAF World Championships, in Helsinki, Finald, with a lifetime-best mark of 6’6.75” in the high jump. Howard currently ranks sixth in the world and is the top American in the high jump.

Andria King, a former assistant coach at Tech, was another highlight under coach Page’s tutelage. Page coached King to four NCAA national runner-up finishes in the 60- and 100-meter hurdles in 1998 and ‘99. She formerly held the American collegiate record in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.00 in 1999. King was a five-time All-American and three-time ACC MVP.

Other Yellow Jacket All-Americans under Page are Eric Bowers (indoor long jump, 1997), Lynn Houston (indoor high jump, 1999), Malcolm Leason (outdoor triple jump, 2000), Shantrell Moss (4x100, 2005), Montrell Person (110m HH, 2004/60m HH, 2005), Clayton Porter (indoor long jump, 2000), Dana Rogers (4x100, 2004, ‘05/60m HH, ‘05), Amandi Rhett (4x100, 100, 200, 2005), Brandy Depland (triple jump 2005, `06), Shantia Moss (60m HH, ‘07, ‘08, 100m HH, `06, ‘08), Andriane Lapsley (60m, 100m, 4x100, `06), Jerome Miller (high jump, `06, ‘09), Fatmata Fofanah (100m HH, ‘07, 60m HH, ‘08) , James Lemons II (indoor triple jump, ‘08, indoor long jump, ‘08, outdoor triple jump, ‘08) and Alphonso Jordan (indoor triple jump, ’09).

Page narrowly missed being named the 2009 East Region Assistant Coach of the Year as Yellow Jackets Alphonso Jordan (triple jump) and Jerome Miller (high jump) won titles in their respective events.

On the conference level, he has guided six men to conference titles: Bowers (indoor long jump, 1997), Jordan (outdoor triple jump, 2009), Leason (outdoor triple jump, 2000), Miller (outdoor high jump, 2009), David Riley (indoor triple jump, 1997) and Person (60m HH, 110m HH, 2004-05).

On the women’s side, Page has coached 25 conference championship perfor-mances, in addition to King’s three hurdle and sprints titles. Lynn Houston won both indoor and outdoor high jump titles in 1997. Mishanta Reyes won the indoor long jump crown in 2001, while Shanta Smith won the indoor triple jump and Jennifer Ledbetter claimed the outdoor high jump title in ‘02. Howard won a total of six high jump titles in three seasons. The women’s 4x100m relay team finished first at the 2005 ACC Outdoor Championships, while

He has coached nine World Championship team members and five Olympians: Natasha Gibson, Howard, Terrence Trammell (2007 U.S. Outdoor National Champion, ‘07 Outdoor World Championships Silver Medalist, ‘08 U.S. Olympic team member, ‘09 U.S. Indoor National Champion), Fofanah and Tisha Waller, who is now the American indoor record holder in the high jump. Page has also worked with Wenda Vereen, who was a member of the U.S. 4x100 team, which won a Silver medal and set an American record at the 1993 World Championships. Howard captured a Silver medal at the 2005 IAAF World Cham-pionships in Helsinki, Finald, with a lifetime-best leap of 6’6.75” in the high jump. Trammell, a three-time Olympian, won the 2007 USA Outdoor National Championships in the 110-meter hurdles and placed second at the ‘07 World Championships since working with Page.

Waller joined Howard on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team in the high jump after capturing her second U.S. title at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Calif.

A native of Evanston, Ill., Page was a NCAA Champion high jumper at the Univer-sity of Missouri in 1979. He was ranked in the top 10 in the world from 1979-81 and earned a spot on the United States’ 1980 Olympic team after finishing second at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Director of AthleticsIndiana [PA] (1980) • 4th Year at Georgia Tech

In his fourth year as Georgia Tech’s Director of Athletics,Dan Radakovich has brought a new vision for excellence tothe Yellow Jackets’ storied athletics tradition. In a relativelyshort amount of time since arriving in Atlanta, Radakovichhas put his mark on Georgia Tech’s athletics program. The 2008-09 academic year at Georgia Tech wos one ofunprecedented athletic success. One year after hiring Paul Johnson as head football coach, Georgia Tech suprised the experts by winning nine games, tying for the ACC Coastal Division title and playing in a 12th consecutive bowl game. The Yellow Jackets, who beat 13th-ranked Georgia and two other ranked teams in November, played in the Chick-

fil-A Bowl and were ranked 22nd in the final national polls. The women’s basketball team registered its third straight 20-win season and earned an NCAA Tournament bid for the third consecutive year. The baseball team finished ranked in the top 25. The softball team swept the ACC regular season and tournament titles. The golf team captured the ACC championship and finished the season ranked seventh nationally. The men’s swimming and diving team enjoyed its best NCAA Championships finish ever (19th) and the women’s team broke 10 school records. The women’s tennis team finished ranked eighth nationally. In men’s track, Jerome Miller (high jump) and Steve Marcelle (shot put) turned in recordbreaking performances en route to earning All-American honors. Facilities received major upgrades in 2008-09. Shirley Clements Mewborn Field, the homefor Tech’s softball program, was unveiled prior to the start of the 2009 season and was ultimately showcased on ESPN when the Yellow Jackets hosted an NCAA Super Regional. The Zelnak Center, a new practice facility for Georgia Tech basketball, will be in place prior to the start of the 2009-10 season. Bobby Dodd Stadium will receive several cosmetic upgrades, featuring a new video board that will be in place this fall. The 2007-08 academic year featured the hiring of Johnson as head football coach, wom-en’s basketball emerging as one of the top programs in the South, baseball advancing to the NCAA Regionals and women’s tennis advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Individually, Amanda Mc- Dowell won the NCAA singles title in women’s tennis. The 2006-07 year was highlighted by Tech’s women’s tennis team capturing the Institute’s first ever NCAA championship and its third straight Atlantic Coast Conference title. The football team won the ACC Coastal Division, the men’s basketball team earned its third NCAA Tourna-ment bid in four years, the women’s basketball team posted its finest season with 21 wins and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, and the golf team won a share of the ACC title for the second straight year. Outside the competition venues, Radakovich has directed an overhaul of the annual giving and donation structure for Tech athletics, anchored by the new TECH Fund, which establishes minimum giving levels tied to season tickets in various seating areas of Bobby Dodd Stadium and Alexander Memorial Coliseum. Several facility upgrades have been completed, including the transformation of Tech’s former football locker room on the ground floor of the Edge Athletic Center into a new Technology Center, which benefits academic support services for all Yellow Jacket student-athletes. Radakovich also initiated the Athletic Director’s Initiative Fund, started in June, 2006, which has rasied in cash and pledges more than $12 million. A recent gift from the Henry F. Mc-Carnish, Jr., family for the renovation of Alexander Memorial Coliseum, could be worth up to $15 million toward that project. Named Georgia Tech’s Director of Athletics on February 22, 2006, Radakovich possesses nearly two decades of experience in collegiate athletics management positions. He came to Georgia Tech after five years as senior associate athletics director at LSU (2001-06), and he previously served as the Athletics Director at American University in 2000-01. That followed stints as associate athletics director at South Carolina (1994-2000) and Long Beach State (1989-94) as well as two years as the athletics business manager at Miami (1983-85). Just the seventh Director of Athletics in Tech history, Radakovich was named by then Institute President Dr. Wayne Clough to succeed Dave Braine, who retired after nearly nine years in the post. Radakovich also follows in the footsteps of storied names such as John Heisman, Bobby Dodd and Homer Rice.A graduate of Center High School near Aliquippa, Pa., and a member of its Alumni Hall of Fame, Radakovich, 50, became a football letterwinner and student coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1980 with a bachelor of science degree in finance. He was enshrined into the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame earlier this year. Radakovich added a master’s degree in business administration from Miami in 1982. He also completedthe Sports Management Institute’s executive education program in 1992. He is married to the former Marcie McDonald, and the couple has two children, Christian, 19,and Grant, 15. Christian is a sophomore at Georgia Tech.

John Heisman (1904-08) Track was introduced as a sport in 1904 and the first head coach for the Yellow Jackets was football legend John Heisman. Along with track, Heisman coached the base-ball, basketball and football teams, where he won a national title in football in 1917. Under Heisman’s guidance, Tech hosted its first track meet on the Tech track circling the baseball field. On May 22-23, 1908, Tech hosted the Southern Intercolle-giate Athletic Association meet at Tech park

Charles Thomas (1909-17) Charles Thomas coached the Tech track team for nine seasons. Thomas led the Rambling Wreck to its first conference championship with a first-place finish at the SIAA meet in 1912

William Anderson Alexander (1918-23) Working as a football and track coach, William Anderson Alexander led the Yellow Jacket track program for six seasons. In 1922, the Yellow Jackets had its finest season during the early era when Alexander led the Rambling Wreck to a Georgia State Championship, a Southeastern Amateur Ath-letic Union Championship, a dual meet win over Sewanee and a tri meet victory against Auburn and Clemson.

George C. Griffin(1924-26, 33-43) George Griffin made his coaching debut in 1922, when the Jackets enjoyed a ton of success. Griffin began his track career at Tech as a freshman standout in 1916 and came to work as an assistant coach under coach Alexander from 1922-23. Griffin took over the reigns in 1924 and although his first stint as head coach lasted only two years, he returned for a 10-year stint 1933-43. He led the Rambling Wreck to unprecedented success during that span, as Tech won six Southeastern Athletic Association Championships and one Southeastern Conference Championship. Griffin coached two Olympians, Homer Welchel and Ed Hamm. Hamm won a Gold medal in the long jump in 1928.

Harold Barron(1927-30) Harold Barron came to Tech after win-ning four national titles in the high hurdles at Penn State University. Barron was on the 1920 Olympic team and finished second at the Summer Games in the high hurdles. Under his watch, Tech standout Ed Hamm won two national championships and qualified for the 1928 Olympics.

Ed Hamm (1931-32) Ed Hamm won two national champion-ships for Tech and took over as head coach in 1931. Hamm became the first Gold medalist for the Jackets in 1928, winning the long jump at the Summer Games.

Norris Dean (1944-64) Norris Dean, one of the finest all-around athletes in Georgia Tech history, succeeded legendary coach George C. Griffin and immediately began to establish his own legacy. In the 20 years in which he directed the track team, Dean witnessed three SEC track titles and finished runner-up on three different occasions. The Yellow Jackets went undefeated in dual meets in 1944, ‘48 and ‘49 and won SEC cross country titles in ‘47, ‘53 and ‘54. Dean is a member of the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame, joining Griffin to represent 32 years of excellence in track and field coach-ing.

Buddy Fowlkes (1965-92) A recent induction into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame on Nov. 30, 2005, Buddy Fowl-kes, the captain of the 1949 Tech track team and three-time SEC total point champion, was named head coach in 1965. Over the next three decades he elevated the Georgia Tech track and field program to extraordi-nary heights as the Yellow Jackets began to consistently rank among the nation’s elite. Fowlkes’ list of accomplishments include three Olympic medalists, two World Record holders, 10 NCAA national champions, 50 All-Americans, 77 Atlantic Coast Confer-ence champions and 126 All-ACC selections. A 1988 inductee in the State of Georgia Athletic Hall of Fame, Fowlkes was twice named ACC Coach of the Year (1987, ‘88) and was honored as the 1985 NCAA Indoor Southeast Coach of the Year. Fowlkes pupils include Antonio McKay,

who won Gold and Bronze medals at the 1984 Olympics and Gold at the ‘88 Summer Games, Mike Armour, a former World Record holder in the 500 meters and James Purvis, a two-time national champion and five-time All-American.

Grover Hinsdale (1993-present) Hinsdale engineered the track program to four top 10 indoor and outdoor NCAA Championship finishes during his 16 seasons as head coach. Entering his 31st season overall with the Yellow Jackets, Hinsdale was named ACC Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2008, and has tutored three Olympic Gold medalists, 13 NCAA champions and 68 All-Americans. Among the group of talented athletes that struck gold is Derrick Adkins, who won Olympic gold in the 400-meter individual hurdles in 1996. A second Olympic medalist is Derek Mills, who won gold as part of the 4x400 relay team in Atlanta. The third Olym-pic gold medalist is Angelo Taylor, who won gold in the 400 intermediate hurdles at the 2000 Sydney Games. He won two national titles and was a four-time All-American dur-ing his career on The Flats. Other top runners under Hinsdale include Octavius Terry, a three-time national champion and nine-time All-American; Jonas Motiejunas, a two-time national champion and five-time All-American; and David Krum-menacker, a two-time national champion and eight-time All-American. Krummenacker is currently one of the top middle distance runners in the world. A 2003 inductee of Ferris State University’s Hall of Fame, Hinsdale led the Rambling Wreck to a fourth-place finish at the 1994 NCAA Outdoor Championships and a third-place finish at the 1997 NCAA Indoor Championships.
