Formalizing Innovation According to leaders, innovation that leads to new products and services is the lifeblood of most organizations. In fact, a recent McKinsey Global Survey shows that 84 percent of executives say innova‐tion is extremely or very important to their companies’ growth strategy. The trick, it seems, is generating breakthrough ideas, selecting the right ideas, prototyp‐ing, and developing business cases – in short, organizing the innovation process from start to finish. Seems like a lot to take on. When asked what one thing would make the most difference in their compa‐nies’ innovation performance, the leaders said process improvement. To some, a process for innovation is an oxymoron ‐ inspired, radical products and services that defy the norm cannot be produced through structured methods. Rod Greder of Awear Technologies and New Productivity Group disagrees, saying the key to success is to “integrate innovation into the strategic planning effort”. An international consultant and facilitator in the area of new product development and innovation, Greder advocates that innovation benefits from formalized processes. “A framework allows you to ‘systematize’ innovation and new product and new service de‐velopment.”

CELEBRATE WHAT’S RIGHT WITH THE WORLD (22 minute DVD, includes leaders guide and workbook)
Do we choose to see possibilities? Do we really believe they are there? Dewitt Jones assures us that there is always more than one right answer. This inspirational, best‐selling training program helps us recognize the possibilities and find solutions for many of the challenges before us. Stunning photography and powerful dialogue help viewers approach their lives with celebration, confidence and grace.
DIVERSITY CHALLENGES—WHAT WOULD YOU DO? (16 minute DVD, includes leader’s guide and Power‐Point presentation on CD)
It is one thing to understand what diversity is, but it is another to hire and manage the human complexities of a diverse workforce. In talking about diversity, we not only focus on the visible examples such as race, age, gender and national origin, but also on not‐so‐visible examples such as personality style, style of interaction, lifestyle situations, education and work function. It is the identification, acceptance and understanding of those differences and similarities that allow individuals to become aware of and fully use their talents and abilities to make unique contributions to workgroups and organizations. Whether your organization has started a diversity initiative or is just beginning to look at the effect diversity has on produc‐tivity, this program is designed to give organizations a chance to discuss issues affecting your workforce.
EVEREST (14 minute DVD, includes discussion guide)
Climbing Mount Everest is hard. Climbing Mount Everest blind is impossible. Or at least that is what they told Erik Weihen‐mayer. This incredible true story follows Erik’s quest to reach the summit of the tallest peak in the world, and the amazing team that made it possible. This DVD is essential for anyone who has ever worked on a team or is responsible for making teams strive to reach higher performance goals. This DVD can also be used to open a project kick‐off meeting, launch a com‐pany retreat, motivate your group during a change experience or initiate leadership development.
START WITH WHY—HOW GREAT LEADERS INSPIRE EVERYONE TO TAKE ACTION By: Simon Sinek
In studying the leaders who have had the greatest influence in the world, the author discovered that they all think, act, and communicate in the exact same way—and it is the complete opposite of what everyone else does. The author calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with ‘why?’ This book is for anyone who wants to inspire others or who wants to find someone to inspire them.

The McKinsey Global Survey confirms this, reporting that 45 percent of companies with set formal strategic priorities for innovation believe they are good at commercialization. That number increases to 56 percent among the respondents at companies with a very or extremely formalized process for commercializing innovations. Formality clearly makes a difference. Greder offers this advice for successful innovation, “Make it a priority and then work toward the goal of commercializing it.” Dr. Greder will be in Winnipeg on March 17 and 18 as a part of QNET’s 2011 Innovation Series. The two sessions, Innovation Tools and New Product Development, can be taken individually or combined to create a two-day series that covers innovation from concept to commercial prod-uct. The sessions are designed to provide you with a solid foundation to build a world-class, new product, or new service development framework for your organization.
Certificate in Management Development What is the QNET CMD? Whether you are new to management or need to upgrade your skills, the QNET Certificate in Management Develop‐ment (CMD) covers a full range of management and leadership responsi‐bilities. This flexible pro‐gram is designed to meet your individual performance and train‐ing requirements while working within your busy and demanding schedule. Most courses are a full day. What’s involved? Earn a certificate by completing 70 credit hours, consisting of 42 core hours (6 workshop days) and 28 optional hours (4 workshop days). Full participation and attendance is required to receive course credit. Besides giving you the tools to become a better manager, QNET’s CMD core courses, and most optional courses, are eligible for credit in the Certificate in Applied Management: Organizational Effectiveness (CAM:OE) program with the Univer‐sity of Manitoba Continuing Education.
