REVIEWING LAST WEEK’S DEPAUW GAME Host Wabash totaled 498 yards of offense and held DePauw to just 95 on the way to a 47-0 shutout of the Tigers in the annual Monon Bell game on a damp, dreary afternoon at Hollett Little Giant Stadium. Wabash also extended its lead in the series to 55-53-9 and closed DePauw’s lead in games played for possession of the Monon Bell to 37-36-6. Neither team managed a first down through the game’s first three possessions, but the Little Giants took a 3-0 lead on Spencer Whitehead’s 43-yard field goal with 9:01 left in the first. The Tigers punted on each of their next two series, before Wabash’s Tyler Burke scored on a 14-yard run to make it 9-0 with 2:26 remaining in the quarter. Late in the first, DePauw’s Taylor Wagner recovered a fumbled Wabash punt return at the Wabash 33, but the Tigers couldn’t convert and gave the ball back to the Little Giants on downs. Wabash then made it 12-0 on Whitehead’s 31-yard field goal with 8:17 left in the half which capped a 15-play drive. The Little Giants were driving on their next possession before Jonathan Lambert picked of Burke’s pass at the DePauw 32 with 2:18 left. DePauw converted a fourth down, but were stopped at the Wabash 49. A bad punt snapped resulted in a loss of 25 yards and the Little Giants needed just two plays to take a 19-0 lead as Chase Belton teamed with Geoffrey Wright for a 23-yard score. Wabash put the game away in the second half as it scored touchdowns on its first four possessions. Meanwhile, the Tigers’ first four series of the half ended in another bad punt snap, an interception, punt and a second interception. DePauw totaled just 11 rushing yards, while Michael Engle completed 12-of-33 passes for just 84 yards. Brayden Dahlstrom caught four for 35 yards and Alex Koors had three for 35 yards. Koors set the DePauw record with a catch in his 39th straight game, breaking the mark held by Jay Pettigrew (1993-96). Derrick Yoder paced Wabash with 164 rushing yards in 24 carries as the Little Giants totaled 292 on the ground. Burke and Belton combined to total 206 passing yards with four touchdown passes to four different receivers. Jonathan Horn led the way with seven catches for 105 yards. Lambert and Ryan Preuss each had 12 tackles for DePauw, while James Foglton had nine. Matt Johnson and Tyler Doane had one sack each in the loss. Deonte Singfield led Wabash with nine tackles, while James Pannell and Blake Powell each intercepted a pass. DePauw converted just 2-of-15 third down situations and 1-of-5 on fourth, while Wabash was 11-of-17 on third downs and perfect on its only fourth down. The shutout was the first in the series since

Wabash claimed a 7-0 win in 1967 and the 47-point margin equaled the third largest in the 117 meet-ings and largest since a similar 47-0 Wabash win in 1952. With Wabash spoiling DePauw’s perfect regular season, it marked the third time in the last four years it’s happened as DePauw defeated 9-0 Little Giant teams in 2007 and 2008.

A LOOK BACK AT LAST YEAR’S NCAA GAME After trailing by as many as 21 points in the first half, DePauw rallied to within three, but 10th-ranked Thomas More’s fumble recovery and score with 1:42 left gave the Saints a 49-39 NCAA Division III first round win over the Tigers. DePauw finished its season at 7-3, while Thomas More improved to 11-0 and advanced to the Division III second round. Thomas More took a 42-32 lead on Laymon Carter’s 1-yard run with 6:08 left which capped a 13-play, 64-yard drive and took 5:38. The Tigers wasted little time in answering as they drove 75 yards in 13 plays with Brayden Dahlstrom catching an 8-yard pass from Spud Dick to make it 42-39 with 3:21 remaining. The Tigers were unable to recover the ensuing onside kick, but the defense stopped the Saints and forced them to punt. A DePauw illegal block penalty on the punt return gave the Tigers the ball on their own 7-yard line with just 2:08 left. Dick teamed with Alex Koors for a 12-yard pass play and a first down. Two plays later, Dick completed a pass to Nathan Evans, but Thomas More’s Wade Begley forced a fumble as Evans was trying to get out-of-bounds. Zach Autenreib scooped up the ball at the DePauw 20 and ran it down the sideline all the way for the score. DePauw did drive to the Thomas More 13 on its final drive but Dick was intercepted by Brandon Kohrs at the Saints 5. “Our guys battled back today,” interim head coach Robby Long said. “I knew they would and I’m proud of them.” Thomas More started the game quickly as Ken-dall Owens scored on a 67-yard pass from Trevor Stellman on the Saints’ fifth play of the game. They made it 14-0 on Cordario Collier’s 1-yard run with 7:00 left in the first. Later in the first, DePauw punter Adam Hill landed a boot at the Thomas More 2 and the de-

fense pushed the Saints back to the 1. Following a Thomas More punt and the DePauw return, the Tigers took over on the Saints’ 30. Five plays later Dick teamed with Bryan Mulligan for a 7-yard score which cut the Thomas More lead to 14-7 with 13:46 left in the first half. DePauw’s defense came up big again with a three-and-out, but on DePauw’s second play of its next series, Nick Gramke intercepted Dick at the DePauw 41. Four plays later, Stellman ran it in from 12 yards to make it 21-7 with 10:52 remaining in the half. On the Tigers’ first play following the kickoff, Autenreib intercepted Dick at the DePauw 30 and returned it for a touchdown which pushed the margin to 28-7. DePauw then embarked on a 15-play, 56-yard drive which consumed 7:15 and culminated in Jordan Havercamp’s 29-yard field goal to make it 28-10. Early in the second half, Thomas Wrona picked off Stellman at the Saints’ 30 and returned it to the 12. Four plays later, Derrick Karazsia plunged in from the 1 to close the gap to 28-17. On the kickoff, Scott Hunt forced Mercier Doucette to fumble the return and DePauw’s Josh-ua Sturek recovered at the Thomas More 26. The Tigers picked up a pair of first downs and were faced with second-and-goal from the 3 when the Saints were called for pass interference. Three plays later Dick tossed a 3-yard scoring pass to Koors which made it 28-24 with 4:58 left in the third. The Saints, however, responded with Stellman’s 68-yard pass to Chris Farley which extended the lead to 35-24 with 1:55 remaining in the third. DePauw came right back as Dick connected with Evans for a 4-yard score with 11:46 left. After three straight penalty calls against the Saints on the two-point conversion attempt, Dick found Koors for the score which closed Thomas More’s lead to 35-32 with 1:46 left in the third. The Saints followed that up with Carter’s score on a drive which included a fourth-and-five conver-sion from the Tigers’ 25. “We were able to slow their rush in the second half,” Dick said of the difference in the offense’s second half performance. “In the first half we struggled quite a bit of-fensively mainly because every time I went back to throw the ball I had someone in my face.” DePauw totaled 29 first downs to the Saints’

KOORS’ RECORD-SETTING CAREER Senior receiver Alex Koors is the DePauw and the SCAC all-time leader in both career receptions and receiving yards with 245 catches for 3,675 yards. His 41 career receiving touchdowns is tied for the top spot in both DePauw and SCAC history behind Dan Ryan’s (1999-02) 41. Koors holds the DePauw record of 39 consecutive games with at least one reception.

ENGLE ANSWERS THE CALL Senior Michael Engle served as the top backup to four-year starter and record-setting signal caller Spud Dick each of the last two seasons and was the Tigers’ holder in 2008. He had started just one collegiate game under center prior to this year, but through this season’s first 10 games, he’s

just 235 passing yards, four completions and two passing touchdowns away from setting DePauw single-season school records in each category. He also already ranks eighth in a DePauw career with 3,259 passing yards and seventh with 30 touchdown passes.

DEPAUW’S FINAL SCAC SEASON In June, DePauw announced its departure from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season to join the North Coast Athletic Conference in 2011-12. Due to prior scheduling commitments by NCAC schools, the Tigers will not begin football competition in the NCAC until the 2012 season and will compete as an independent next season. DePauw competed for 13 seasons in the SCAC and posted the second-best conference record during that time, capturing SCAC titles in 2000, 2005, 2009 and 2010 including their lone outright championship this year.

    ROBBY LONGDePauw Head Coach

Robby Long is in his second season as head football coach and seventh overall on the DePauw football staff. He directed the Tigers to a 7-3 record in 2009 including a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference co-championship and the program’s first NCAA postseason appearance. For his efforts, Long was voted the SCAC’s Coach of the Year. Long served as an assistant coach the previous five years and as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator from 2006 through 2008. He also serves as DePauw’s coordinator of student athletic recruit-ment. Under his direction, the Tiger defense ranked 26th in NCAA Division III in interceptions in 2007, 30th in sacks per game and 47th in rushing defense, while the 2006 squad was 31st in sacks and 40th in both interceptions and pass efficiency defense rating. In the two seasons prior to coming to DePauw, Long served as a graduate assistant on the defensive line at the University of Illinois. He assisted the defensive line coach in planning and conducting practices in addition to organizing and coaching the defensive and special teams scout teams.

Long, a native of Champaign, Ill., earned a bachelor of science of applied life degree from Illinois. A three-year varsity letterman for the Fighting Illini, Long played on the 2001 outright Big Ten champion squad that finished with a 10-2 record and competed in the 2002 Sugar Bowl. He also played on the squad that won the 1999 Micron PC Bowl and finished with an 8-4 record. Long was the team’s defensive player of the week after the California game in 2001. In the summer of 2006, Long served as an assistant coach with the Chicago Bears as part of the National Football League’s Minority Coaching Fellowship Program.
