BACKGROUND

In 1889 the gunsmiths in Belgium’s Liege Region formed an association to fill an order from the Belgian military for 150,000 Mauser rifles built under license. Thus Fabrique Nationale formed and is the origin of today’s FN, a designation that is still a worldwide hallmark of quality.

In 1897, the FN tradition expanded with the partnership of John Moses Browning, one of the most innovative firearms designers in history. Together, FN and Browning produced several of the most prestigious firearms in the world, including the 9mm Hi Power pistol, numerous Browning machine guns, the Auto-5 autoloading shotgun, the .22 semi-automatic rifle and the B25 Superposed shotgun – arms that were Made in Belgium and are still legendary.

FN products received the ultimate acknowledgement in 1957 and 1982, respectively, when NATO adopted our 7.62mm and 5.56mm caliber ammunition designs as their military standard. The success of the M249, M240, .50 caliber machine guns, and the fielding of the FAL (Light Assault Rifle) by more than 90 countries all demonstrate FN’s commitment to excellence.

FN’s full name is Fabrique Nationale Herstal (FNH). Herstal was added to FN when it became a subsidiary of the Belgian-based company, the Herstal Group. FNH and the Herstal Group are based out of Liege, Belgium, just an hour drive from the NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The Herstal Group is known around the globe for the quality and performance of its products. Under the brand names FN Herstal, Browning and Winchester, the Herstal Group designs, manufactures and distributes a full range of firearms and accessories for defense, law enforcement, hunting and competition.

LEADER IN SMALL ARMS

In the United States FN is represented by two entities; FNH USA, which is responsible for sales, marketing and business development, and FNM, which handles manufacturing. Together they have a workforce of approximately 700 employees.

FNH USA was started in 1998 in McLean, Virginia. FNH USA is split into two separate divisions: military operations and law enforcement/commercial operations. The role of FNH USA is to coordinate business development with all government agencies and to grow FN market share in the law enforcement and commercial sector.

FN Manufacturing, located in Columbia, South Carolina, is the U.S. manufacturing arm of FN. Design, research and development, and manufacturing activities are conducted under the authority of the mother company, FN Herstal SA. Some of the firearms that FNM produces for the U.S. Government are M16 rifles, M249 Light Machine Guns and M240 Medium Machine Guns. FNM also produces the FNP and FNX line of handguns, as well as the SPR and TSR XP bolt-action rifle line for FNH USA.

FNM is one of only three small arms manufacturers designated by the U.S. Government as the industry base for small arms production. Our reputation for quality and reliability has been clearly demonstrated by the adoption of numerous FN weapon systems by the U.S. military and law enforcement organizations.

FUTURE FIREARMS

Among FN’s latest designs, and potentially one of its most influential family of firearms, are represented by the 5.56 mm MK 16 carbine, 7.62 mm MK 17 assault rifle and 40 mm MK 13 Grenade Launcher, all developed under the Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle (SCAR) program. In January 2004 the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) began soliciting for a new assault rifle, the SCAR.

In November of the same year, the FN model of the SCAR™ was chosen over 11 other bids. The enhanced capability of the FN SCAR™ is directly related to its modularity (capable of 9 different configurations) and its development process. The FN SCAR™ will replace

seven firearms now in the USSOCOM inventory. These firearms were developed hand-in-hand with SOF operators and FN engineers. The MK 16, MK 17 and MK 13 are truly an operator envisioned, tested and chosen firearm system. They are now being operationally fielded in overseas deployment by units of the U.S. Military.

The FN SCAR™ 16S and 17S are also available as semi-auto, civilian-legal versions, and are ideal for 3-gun practical competition.

The fn Tactical Sport Trigger System™ is a three-lever trigger that works on the simple principle of the pivoting lever. Pictured above are the triggerpiece (a), actuator (B) and sear (c). all internal parts, pins and springs are precision crafted from stainless steel. The sear and actuator are electroless nickel Teflon® coated for corrosion resistance and smoother operation.

The triggerpiece offers a wide, smooth face to better distribute finger pressure for a lighter, more sensitive feel. Because of the trigger’s new geometry and 2:1 mechanical advantage, as the triggerpiece moves rearward (X) it travels only half the distance of the actuator (2X). Since this distance is greatly decreased, the perception of trigger creep and overtravel movement are virtually eliminated.

Like auto racing, competitive shooting provides a proving ground for new ideas and new technologies.

In addition, corporate support for the shooting sports is important to help recognize competitive excellence, build the sport and bring new participants into organized programs around the country. Programs like these are key to improving shooting skills as well as promoting the safe and responsible ownership and use of firearms. FNH USA is proud to be involved in supporting marksmanship at the highest levels of national competition.

For example, FNH USA is the major sponsor of the annual Midwest 3-Gun Championships, held

in Fayette, Missouri. This NRA-sanctioned event is one of the largest 3-gun action shooting matches in the country, drawing hundreds of competitors from across the nation.

At the 2009 Midwest 3-Gun Championships, Sgt. Daniel Horner of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit won the Tactical Optics Division. Another member of the USAMU team, SFC Robby Johnson, won the Tactical Iron Division. The Tactical Optics-Heavy Division win went to Tate Moots, with the Heavy Metal Division win going to Michael Fordyce, and the Open Division win going to Don Bednorz. The win in the Stage 5 FNH USA match, in which all competitors use a SCAR™ 16S carbine, SLP Mark I shotgun and an FNP-45 pistol also went to Sgt. Horner.

In 2009, FNH USA also sponsored the Rocky Mountain 3-Gun match, the DPMS 3-Gun event and the Ft. Benning 3-Gun competition.

The FNH USA-Leupold Long-Range Precision Shooting Competition is held at Ft. Meade, Maryland. This demanding week-long event hosts dozens of elite law enforcement and military tactical shooting teams, testing their physical conditioning as well as their shooting, observational and range-finding skills.

In 2009, Officer Nate Mickle and PFC Rich McCampbell of the Baltimore County PD SWAT team took top overall team honors. The duo of Sgt. Trent Lebo and Sgt. Steve Tom from the Maryland State Police ‘A’ Team nailed down the second overall team ranking, while the San Diego PD squad of Officer Wayne Doeden and Off icer Gordon Campfield took third. Campfield also took the top overall individual shooting honors.

FNH USA also participates in the annual Shooting Industry Master’s Tournament. This annual event brings the best shooters in the firearms industry together for some top-flight competition in the rifle, pistol and shotgun events.

In 2009, the FNH USA team of Ken Pfau, Ken Flood, Tommy Thacker, Mark Hanish and Tasha Hanish placed second overall, and Mrs. Hanish emerged as the Open Division champion in the Ladies Category. FNH USA has a long corporate tradition of offering support to many dedicated organizations and worthy causes related to the shooting sports. In 2009, at the non-profit FNH USA-Leupold Long-Range Precision Competition, participants and supporters raised some $13,000 for the

National Tactical Officers Association, Special Forces Association and Redwing 19 Special Warfare Family Fund to help support tactical officers and soldiers who have been wounded in action, and to help their families deal with the costs of their medical care and rehabilitation.

FNH USA participated in the 2009 Shooting Industry Master’s Tournament. The industry-wide event raised over $25,000 for the NSSF First Shots program to promote the shooting sports to newcomers.

During its 4th Annual FNH USA Midwest 3-Gun Championships, the company donated a FN SCAR™ 16S for raffle that raised $4,900 for the Wounded Warrior Project.
