Aloha and welcome to the spring issue of our Nursing Research Newsletter. Since our last issue we started the New

Year with the addition of a dedicated space at the university's Biomedical Building for our new research center. This

space was designated for the Center for Nursing, Office of Research and Extramural Programming, the Office of Re-

search Development and the Scholars in Research Program. A variety of lectures, workshops, and in-house trainings

were held to augment student and faculty knowledge and experiences on topics of research such as statistics, grant

writing, publications, and others. We continued to build clinical research partnerships within the university, our

health care industry, and the military institutions. For our first EARDA Undergraduate Summer Research Award,

we received applications from students whose proposals were of high quality and significance, resulting in very close

scores among the top three finalists. After review by the Research Committee, the award was given to Jeremy

Thacker, a pre-nursing student. We congratulate Jeremy and all the other applicants for their great proposals and we

look forward to next year's summer research award cycle. These and the following listed achievements are just snap-

shots of the hard work and effort that our students and faculty have done over the past six months and we look for-

ward to continued commitment in our journey forward. Rosa Castro is now assisting with our research webpage de-

velopment. The Principal Investigator Guide (formally manual) is under revision with assistance by the Office of Re-

search & Extramural Programming (OREP) staff, D. Estrella, EARDA Project Coordinator, & R. Castro, Project

Manager of the P20 Center for ‘Ohana Self-Management of Chronic Illnesses. We hope it will provide continuing

guidance in our grants and project management efforts.

Message from the Director of Office of Research & Extramural Programming

Aloha from the Staff of the Office of Research and Extramural Programming! James Kowalski, Patsy Yamane, Thea

Nieves, and I have had an exciting and productive start to 2010 and hope that you have too. To begin with, we have

a new home and hope that you’ve made a visit to our new spacious digs in the BioMed building, Courtyard C 105.

Given the distance from Webster Hall, we are making every effort to ensure that you continue to have ready access

to our services – if not, please let us know.

Since December, we’ve assisted 12 faculty with grant/contract submissions for a total of $13,100.00. We also are

processing five partnership grants with the Queen’s Medical Center and Tripler Army Medical Center. We are also

in the process of conducting annual audits and providing each project with a current budget during those meetings.

This process is giving the PI and OREP valuable information about the status of each grant and we will continue to

schedule them. Jim has also offered to provide updated budgets to each PI at least quarterly.

Next on our agenda is to develop a user-friendly and robust website, continue to develop written policies to provide

you with another source of information that may assist you as you prepare and manage grants.

Thank you for your continued support of OREP!

— Deb Mark

ORD & COSMCI NEED YOUR INPUT ON TRAINING TOPICS

Upcoming Training: Project Facilitation/Coordination-June 25, 2010* from 12:00pm-

2:00 pm in Webster #402C presented by Rosa Castro and Dominic Estrella. This past

year, ORD and COSMCI hosted five journal clubs, six scholar lecture series, one grant-

manship workshop, and one writing for publication workshop. The presentation topics

included qualitative methods, quantitative data analysis, SPSS, clinical trials, self-

management with cancer care, community based program for overweight prevention, the

relationship between mass vaccines and chronic illnesses, self-management of diabetes

during pregnancy, and chronic renal disease at the end of life. Dr. Jobe’s grantmanship

workshop described in detail the NIH grant mechanisms, funding programs, new policies

and grant submission procedures, and funding opportunities in Community Based Par-

ticipatory Research. ORD & COSMCI would like to invite you to give us suggestions on

training topics for the new school year. Please contact Rosa Castro at 956-0536 or at

[email protected] with your ideas for training topics.
