“We lost a lot of skilled guys and most of our leaders from last year, so we all have to step up our level of play,” said longtime St. Joe’s head coach Tony Karcich. “We have only two starters returning on offense and four on defense so the younger players will have to mature really quick. Our schedule will test us in a big way every single week but we love the competition. To be the best, you have to go through everyone and beat the best. While not a usual goal for us, making the playoffs will not be as easy for us this year as it has been in years past with our schedule. But assuming we do make the playoffs, our tough schedule will season us and get us better prepared for the playoffs than any other team we’ll face during the states.”

SJR has by far the toughest schedule of any team in Bergen County; including being the only team in the state to play all three North Jersey parochial powerhouses (Don Bosco Prep, Bergen Catholic and St. Peter’s Prep) during the regular season. Every single team on its schedule will likely make the playoffs with most having realistic aspirations of winning a section title. Look for the Green Knights to get into the playoffs and then successfully defend their Non-Public Group 3 state title.

“We’re going to be very, very young this year, but we still want to compete at the highest level we possibly can,” said Bergen Tech head coach Peter Lesler. “In our league (Big North Division 3), it is tough to be competitive week in and week out with the type of competition every team faces. That is what we’re trying to do, be consistent and be competitive every week. Every year, we shoot to be above .500 and make the playoffs. It won’t an easy goal to achieve this year, but we want to be a playoff team and that’s what we’re shooting for.”

With the loss of 22 seniors, most of them starters, look for Bergen Tech to take a step back this year playing in a tough league (Division 3 of the Big North Conference) against a very difficult schedule. But the Knights are a team that played a very solid Ridgewood squad tough last year. They will get the Maroons again in the season-opener this year. If they can play them tough again, with an inexperienced squad, they could gain enough momentum to carry them through to a successful season. But three wins against their schedule is a more likely end result.

“We’re very green this year but I love our work ethic and our athleticism,” said Ridgewood head coach Chuck Johnson. “Most of the kids in our program play other sports. So while we’re catching up a bit football-wise, these kids are smart athletes and the competitive fire is there every single day. Our schedule is extremely tough. But you have to go through that kind of schedule to succeed in the playoffs. We’re growing each day and our coaching staff is doing a great job of getting these kids prepared for a big season.”

Under Johnson, the Maroons have quietly built one of the most consistent public school programs in Bergen County; having won at least seven games in each of the past 12 years. While it will be tough this year keep that streak intact, playing a rigourous schedule in Division 3 of the new Big North Conference, there is no reason to think that Ridgewood will fall flat despite their inexperience. Another 7-8 win season and a run in the North 1, Group 4 playoffs are achievable goals.

“We improved our win total last year and we have the players capable taking this team to the next level,” said Teaneck head coach Art Mazzaca. “We finally have experience and we are playing with a lot of confidence. We’ve been young for the past two years. We can’t use that as a crutch because we’re not young anymore. This is a senior-heavy team, most of which started as sophomores. I think we’re ready for it and it’s time for those seniors to prove what they can do.”

The talent is there for the Highwaymen to be a successful team, under most circumstances. Williams is one of Bergen County’s quickest tailbacks and Harrison led New Jersey in receiving yards last year. But their Big North Division 3 schedule is absolutely brutal. All of their opponents have playoff potential and six of them are among the favorites to win a section title. They should be competitive in every game but wins will be tough to come by.

“There is an excitement in the air here and we’re trying to build on a good season last year,” said Paramus head coach Dan Sabella. “I think we have a nice combination of experienced leaders and young players eager to make their mark on the varsity level. We were one game away from playing in Giants Stadium (in the North 1, Group 3 final) last year and lost a close game to the eventual champion. That is a loss that has motivated our kids all offseason. As good as we were last year, we’re striving to be even better and we want to play under the bright lights of (the New Meadowlands Stadium). The only way you do that is if you make a state final and that’s been our goal since we lost to Ramapo last year.”C

Robertson is one of Bergen County’s top quarterbacks and can sling it all over the field into tight spots. The Spartans do not have an easy schedule by any means though. In a four week span, they face St. Joe’s, Wayne Hills, Hackensack and Fair Lawn as part of their new Big North Division 3 schedule. How well they do in those four games will likely be an indicator of their playoff chances. Four losses will likely spell doom for their playoff hopes. But if they can go at least 2-2 in those four games, they’ll be primed for another playoff berth with the potential to make a push for a spot in the sectional finals.

Demarest returns a siginificant amount of talent at the skills positions. Lewis will be back at quarterback looking to get the ball to Crimmins early and often. The junior wide receiver is back for his second year as a varsity starter and is already on the radar screen of Division 1 programs. McVey should make an impact on both sides of the ball and Horowitz, who is only a sophomore, has been impressive so far this preseason.

The move to Division 5 of the Big North Conference can only help the Norsemen, who are looking for their first winning season since going to the North 1, Group 3 state sectional final in 2004. Demarest should be competitive in just about all of its league games, which include former NBIL rivals Northern Highlands, Bergenfield and Indian Hills. How well it plays in its tough crossovers against Fair Lawn and DePaul could go a long way to determining whether or not the Norsemen are a dark horse candidate for a state playoff spot.

“It’s going to be a long process but we’re showing signs of improvement and we’re starting to come together,” said Dumont first-year head coach Phil Delzotto. “We want to be competitive in every quarter of football we play. If we can be competitive in every quarter then we’ll be competitive in every game. This team wants to be successful week in and week out. To do that, you have to have consistency and that’s what we’re striving for.”

This year could be a rough one for the Huskies, who now play in the Big North Division 6 and have two of the league’s top three teams (Ramsey and Westwood) to start the season. But if they can compete in those two games then they should have confidence that they can compete against anyone, which could result in a few victories.

“We have some size and some speed this year and I really feel we can have a good season,” said Englewood head coach Greg Tanzer. “Having tremendous athletes isn’t the problem because we have plenty of those. We just have to get them to buy into our system and they are doing that. If we can get these guys to worry about a singular focus and get the job done every single day, that will show up on gameday when it counts.”

The first three weeks of the Maroon Raiders season will likely be a very good indicator of how its year will play out. They travel to face Mahwah and River Dell before a home game against a loaded Westwood squad. If they can sneak a win or two out of those three games then a playoff spot is a realistic goal. At the very least, they should be able to up their win total from last season.

“We have a completely new schedule and we’re excited about the challenges we’ll face within our (new) league against mainly other Group 2 schools like us,” said Mahwah head coach Jeff Remo of his team playing in Division 6 of the Big North Conference. “We held our own last year in the NBIL and we feel we can do that again this year in the new league. We will need to stay healthy in order to be successful. Last year, we just missed out on making the playoffs. This year, we feel like we’re a better team and we want to take that next step.”CO

With starting quarterback Karl Kreshpane and starting running back Dave Heitman both likely out for the year with concussion-related injuries it will be interesting to see how Mahwah’s offense gets acclimated early in the season. Buonocore (13 rushing TDs last year) will likely see some time at quarterback and will be one of the more dangerous offensive weapons in this league. Even with the likes of defending section champ Ramsey, section finalist River Dell, and solid Westwood and Ridgefield Park teams, look for the Thunderbirds to be in the upper echelon of the division and to qualify for the state tournament.

“We had a real tough year last year and there is lots of room for improvement,” said Fort Lee head coach Bill Straub. “Our goal seems cliché, but it’s true. We’re just trying to get better every practice, every day. If we can do that then we will be much more competitive.”

The new realignment may have hurt Fort Lee more than any other team. Infused in what was an already tough BCSL-American schedule, come two tough NBIL teams, including defending state champion Ramsey. Iafelice is a potential first-team all-league player but may not have enough talent around him to win games. The Bridgemen have some good athletes on their roster and there is some potential there. They should double their win total from a year ago.

Page 50: 2010 Bergen County Football Preview

52

“Our goals are simple every year -- win more games than we lose and qualify for the state tournament,” said Ridgefield Park head coach Tony Gonzalez. “In the past (22) years, we have only had a losing season twice. It gives our players motivation to work hard and keep that tradition going. We’ve had a great summer and a great camp. We have to keep that rolling into the season and get some wins to keep our confidence riding high.”

With the school’s all-time leading passer (McArow) graduated, the Scarlets will go back to what has worked for them for decades, and that’s running the ball down the throat of opposing defenses. Another above .500 season is likely, as is a potential run to the North 2, Group 2 section final, in what is generally a wide-open field.

After losing the way we did in the states (36-0 against Bogota), it woke the younger kids up and showed them you can’t take anything for granted,” said Westwood head coach Vito Campanile. “But the silver lining is due to injuries, some of those younger players got experience on the varsity level. With the senior leadership and the core players we have back, we really don’t feel like we have a spot on offense or defense that we’re trying to hide. Our aspirations are of winning a state title and that’s what these kids have been gearing towards since last December when our season ended.”

Stevenson is one of the best two-way players in both this league and in Bergen County. Page, his senior teammate, is perhaps the most underrated two-way player in Bergen County. Condon is an experienced quarterback and an accurate passer who can manage the game and stay poised in a pressure situation. The Cardinals are a team on the rise and their biggest measuring stick could come on the season’s opening weekend when they face off against old BCSL-American rival River Dell. They have not beaten the Hawks since the 2006 season, which was the last time the school won a section title.

Elmwood Park has as good a safety tandem as any team in Bergen County with Diaz and DeFreitas returning. They also happened to be the team’s leaders on offense last season and will be asked to carry the load again. A big test will come in Week 2 when the Crusaders play Glen Rock with a shot to avenge their only home loss of the year last season. Another big game comes against Lodi two weeks later. A pair of wins in those two games and they will likely be headed back to the postseason.

“We want to get back to the state playoffs and make that a consistent goal for this program,” said first-year Elmwood Park head coach Scott Wisniewski who takes over a team that made the playoffs last year for the first time since 1985. “What we’re doing this year is different from what they learned last year. So we worked all offseason on getting them acclimated to our system. I think defensively we’ll be fine and we’ll be able to run the ball with anyone. It was huge for these players to taste the playoffs last year and now they want more. We’re not satisfied with just getting in, we want to win a state game and take it from there.”

Garfield is small but feisty at nearly every position on the field. The Boilermakers will have to use their quickness as a positive and not be overwhelmed at the point of attack. They open the season with tough but winnable games against Elmwood Park and Rutherford. If they are to reach their goal of a .500 season, they will have to at least split those two games and win the rest of their swing games. It won’t be easy a task but it’s possible.

LODI – Each of the last two seasons have ended with mixed feelings for the Lodi football team. Last year’s squad went 7-3 and won the school’s second league title in a row. But for the second straight season the Rams were bounced out of the state tournament in the first round and an otherwise successful season ended leaving the Rams with a somewhat bitter taste in their mouths, again. While Lodi only lost a handful of seniors, those seniors were some of the best football players to come of out Lodi High School in recent memory. Linebacker Joe Falato led North Jersey in tackles and is now at Rutgers competing for playing time. Patrick Najbar was a speedy wideout and dangerous return man and Danny Ageyman was one of Bergen County’s leading rushers. Najbar and Ageyman are also playing college football. But the horizon is still bright for Lodi as

senior quarterback Joe Salame and most of their offensive and defensive lines, along with ¾ of their secondary return for the 2010 season as the Rams look to win a third straight league title.“We definitely lost a lot of talent on both sides of the ball but we also return a lot of guys with plenty of experience,” said Lodi head coach Pat Tirico. “Those guys are going to have to step up and take more a leadership role.”Anchoring the defensive line will be junior nose guard Paul Zeppieri, who Tirico feels could be a run-stopping force in the middle. Pete Zisa and Stefano Perito will also push for starting spots up front. Mike Calero and Kevin Couto will make up half of a strong secondary unit. The X-factor will be if 6’3” sophomore Fernando Almonte can translate his blazing track speed onto the football field to become Lodi’s No. 1 receiver.“We have some potential weapons on offense, the key is staying away from silly penalties that put us in bad situations,” said

Tirico. “Our line is solid, Joe Salame is an experienced quarterback, and DeLaRosa is capable of a breakout season. “We don’t know much about what our receiving core can do in game situations but the potential is there to give us a more diverse offensive attack.”Lodi will be tested right out of the gate when the open the season on the road at Glen Rock. The game will be especially interesting because the Rams’ hard-fought 9-7 win over the Panthers last year was their signature win and clinched the league title.“Glen Rock is a nice measuring stick for us opening day and we better be ready for them,” added Tirico. “I think if we have consistency on both sides of the ball, and especially stopping the run on defense, that we could have another successful year. “Our goal is to win a third straight league title and go a step further in the states. I think if we show that consistency and stay healthy we have a good shot of doing that.”

“We’re concentrated on building blocks for this to be a successful season and a perennially successful program,” said Lyndhurst head coach Scott Rubinetti. “I think the kids are more comfortable with our coaching staff and with the system that we run. We are working on the intangibles that turn a good team into a great team and the vibe in the locker room is much better than it was last year. We’re ahead of where we were but still a long way from where we want to be.”C

The Golden Bears will get a chance at revenge in their first two games against neighboring rivals North Arlington and Becton, who beat them easily last year. This team will have a tough time making the postseason but they have a chance at doubling their win total from last year, if not more with a couple of breaks here and there.

KSADDLE BROOK>2009 RECORD 1-9

NJIC – DIVISION 2B

“We’ve been very inexperienced the past two years but this is the year you can really see our growth,” said Saddle Brook head coach Leo Ciappina. “For two years now, we’ve been waiting in the wings. This year, we genuinely feel we can be competitive in every game we play. We’re hungry to get back to playing winning football. I think if we get some wins early on and gain some confidence that we will be a tough team to beat for anyone on our schedule.”C

Saddle Brook snapped a 21-game losing streak spanning three years with a season-ending rout over Sussex Tech in 2009. The prospects are much brighter for the Falcons this season. While likely not a playoff team, they should win 3-4 games and give a few top Group 1 teams a scare along the way.

CRESSKILL>2009 RECORD 7-3

NJIC – DIVISION 3A

“With 17 seniors returning, our core group has a lot of experience,” said Cresskill head coach Bob Valli. “They all get along and they all come ready to work hard every single day. After narrowly missing the playoffs the past two years, we know we have to take care of business. With so many seniors and this being their last shot at winning a league title and making the state tournament, there is a real sense of urgency and they understand what it takes to not have that happen again.”CO

The quarterback battle between Stovall, a senior, and Feulner, a junior, will be an interesting one to watch. Whoever takes the reins will be directing a loaded offense led by the versatile Young. Having to replace a two-time All-Bergen County linebacker (Wengerter) will not be easy. Cresskill should make the playoffs this year and could be a dark horse pick to win a section title.

RIDGEFIELD >2009 RECORD 1-9

NJIC – DIVISION 3A

“We have 15 returning senior starters and we have high hopes for this season,” said Ridgefield head coach Charlie Trentacosti. “With only one win last year, and that being a forfeit, there is nowhere to go but up. The big thing so far is that we’re being very physical and very positive about what we feel we can do. We’re growing together and these kids are tired of losing. I can’t begin to tell you how hard they have worked. We are giving them the big picture and they are starting to believe that they can become champions not somewhere down the road, but this year.”C

For the first time in five years, the playoffs are not just a pipe dream for Ridgefield. The Royals (playing in Division 3A of the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference) are a team that has taken their lumps and are now ready to dish a few out to their opponents. With a fast start, this team can make a playoff push. A .500 record though is more attainable and a vast improvement from a year ago when they allowed at least 24 points in every game they played and only reached double-digits in points offensively three times.

“It was hard to drop down to the JV level last year but it turned out to be the best thing for us and it probably saved the program,” said Palisades Park/Leonia head coach Dave Schuman in reference to not fielding a varsity team last year. “We had to start from scratch and teach these kids the fundamentals on a level where they could use them effectively. We were not prepared to play a varsity schedule last year. But this year we are and we feel we’ll be competitive. Our mindset about the future of our program is totally different from where it was at this time last year. Now we have some confidence and we’re excited to get back on the field.”

In the rebuilding process of the Palisades Park/Leonia program, the Tigers are going to struggle this year. But they will not be completely overmatched and there are some winnable games on their schedule. By getting the program back on its feet and fielding a varsity team, Palisades Park/Leonia has already scored a major victory. Getting two or three wins this season is a possibility and would be icing on the cake.

“Our whole defensive line is back and those same four were also starters on the offensive line, and that is a good core group to have,” said New Milford head coach Bill Wilde. “In our second and third games we have Cresskill and St. Mary’s. I think those two games will give us an idea if we are a contender for a league title or not. But we’re working hard and we are going to give every one of our opponents our best effort.”

Having a good experienced offensive and defensive line in any level, but especially in Group 1 where that is rare, is always a good starting point. But the Knights will miss Piasevoli, a bruising runner with great speed, who rushed for over 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns last year. If Gorman can do half of what Piasevoli did last year and the winner of the quarterback battle between Hackett and Swanson can manage the game and limit turnovers, this could be a dangerous team.

QUEEN OF PEACE>2009 RECORD 4-6

NJIC – DIVISION 3B

“You never know what a team is going to be like until they are in live game action but we feel like we can be pretty good this season,” said Queen of Peace head coach Steve Romano. “Staying healthy will be a big factor in our success. We feel our secondary is as good as any in our league and we are getting better every day. I think if we continue to get better and play with confidence that we can make the state playoffs and even make some noise, if we play up to our capabilities.”C

Neely, a transfer from the now-defunct Paterson Catholic, gives the Golden Griffins the speed threat they desperately needed in the backfield. While depth is a concern, Queen of Peace’s best 11 on both sides of the ball can compete with anyone in their league. If they stay healthy, they should make their first trip back to the state tournament since 2005 when they advanced to the Non-Public Group 2 title game.
