EMW PRESIDENT JOHN ANNER ON AN ORGANIZED BIKE RIDE ACROSS VIETNAM TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR EMW’S PROGRAM WORK

On behalf of the East Meets West Foundation (EMW), I am pleased to present our accom-plishments and highlights from 2010. We continued to fulfill our

mission of designing and implementing solu-tions to systemic issues that affect people in de-veloping countries: high infant mortality rates, barriers to education, and disease and death due to lack of safe water and proper sanitation.

Over the last 23 years of work, EMW’s core programs that combat these issues have served millions of people and have been proven to be both high-impact and sustainable. One of our constant goals is to deliver these high-impact programs at scale. Translated from the jargon, the idea of impact at scale basically means, “How can we help a lot of people and still do it in a meaningful, effective way?”

But what does “a lot” mean? And what makes an intervention meaningful?

To use the example of one of EMW’s healthcare programs, a typical surgery for a child born with a heart defect costs around $2,000 in Vietnam. By any measure, providing a child with lifesav-ing surgery qualifies as high-impact. But there are 15,000 children waiting for this type of op-eration in Vietnam. To help all of them would cost $30 million, money we just don’t have in our budget. Using that same analysis, we could take that hypothetical $30 million and help 30 mil-lion people in Cambodia by giving them each a bottle of water that costs $1. Now, a lot of people would have been helped, but not very much and only for a short time.

But the tradeoff between impact and scale isn’t insurmountable. At EMW, we have found ways of getting to impact at significant scale through three crucial activities.

We seek catalytic moments where the intervention can fundamentally and permanently change the way a given system operates. In our neonatal program, for example, we began by imagining how the entire system of Vietnam’s infant healthcare could be improved. To do so requires a full intensive care solution

P.S. Thank you for your continued support of East Meets West—our work is made possible through the commitment of our donors!

Warm regards,

John Anner President, East Meets West

for each hospital that treats babies; it took time, but that is what we now can provide.

Negotiating strategic partnerships with major companies or agencies. For example, EMW’s partnership with VTV, the national television station in Vietnam, has resulted in a major increase in the capacity of the country to treat congenital heart defects through a massive fundraising and awareness building initiative. By building on each partner’s inherent strengths, we exponentially increase our impact.

Finally, we constantly look for ways to scale up high-impact programs, and methods of increasing the impact of large-scale programs. When possible, we do both at the same time. EMW builds water supply systems that deliver clean water to people’s homes. The benefits to the family are enormous—and, permanent. Thanks to funding from the World Bank, EMW went from building a few systems each year to now around one a month. And two years ago, we added a sanitation component that has significantly improved the outcomes of the program in terms of promoting health and hygiene.

Impact at scale is not only about money—it’s about innovation, creativity and collaboration.

health care

$2.6 millionEMW’s programs in pediatric cardiology, infant critical care,

dentistry and disabilities are models of high-impact programs that operate

on a national or regional scale. For example, our neonatal program

Breath of Life now reaches over 250 medical facilities treating 45,000 newborns a year in six countries.

East Meets West’s results in 2010 reflect our commitment to implementing programs that offer the people we serve opportunities to live more productive, healthy lives. Our programs provided critical care

for infants, multi-year scholarships for students, and affordable safe water and improved sanitation for low-income communities.

education

$1.9 millionEducation offers a critical pathway out of poverty for families, but to be educated means having at least a high school degree. Basic literacy is not enough; students need to be supported through the end of high school. EMW’s education programs prevent drop-out for over 11,000 students.

water & sanitation

$1.9 millionPreventing water-borne disease

means providing both clean water supply and sanitation. EMW delivers

a comprehensive solution, combining piped water supply to over 250,000 people along with sanitary latrines

and hygiene education at a cost that is reasonable and sustainable for low-

income communities.

infrastructure

$6.6 millionGood engineering leads to sustainability; well-built facilities need less maintenance and last longer. EMW has completed many projects, including hospitals, university buildings, hundreds of primary and secondary schools, bridges, dams and other facilities. Most of them are built to the latest appropriate green building standards.

strategic partnershipsEMW has brought its model of neonatal care to India—high-value, locally manufactured neonatal equip-ment designed for the Indian medical system. Results will be in-creased dramati-cally through a partnership with GE Healthcare and collabora-tions with local partners.

impactIn one of the world’s newest democracies, Timor Leste, EMW has established a program to improve infant healthcare outcomes.

scaleEMW continues to scale up our core

programs in Vietnam. We added 7,000 high school students to our scholarship

program so that over 11,000 students from the poorest families in Vietnam are

now guaranteed an education. We dra-matically increased our sanitation efforts and expanded our healthcare programs.

impactEMW built the first intensive care units for infants in Laos—now nearly every province in the country has a facility that has been devel-oped—and the staff trained—by EMW.

opportunityIn 2011, EMW launched new programs in the Philippines. Although it is a middle-income country, many people in the Philippines lack access to safe water, education and healthcare. Most low-income people in the world now live in middle-income countries such as India and the Philippines.

innovationEMW is building solar-powered water systems in Cambodia which serve thousands of school children.

East Meets West implements programs that are high-impact, which we define as making a lasting, profound and meaningful change in the lives of the people we serve. We have done this in Vietnam for 23 years, and

over the past five years have expanded to other countries in Asia.

In 2010, East Meets West launched its first employee giving campaign, called “Together for Our Future.” Through this totally voluntary, peer-to-peer effort, 92% of EMW employees made personal three-year commitments to the program of their choice, totaling over $100,000 in support. Below we recognize their contributions (employees chose how they wanted to be publicly recognized).
