Bringing Arts Education Where It Is Needed Most
In The Classroom“I continually strive to advance the learning process for my students by helping them develop creative skills that can be applied both inside, and outside of the classroom. A recent example of this occurred in my 2nd grade class at Sunnyside Elementary School, when a young boy named Wesley crumpled up a dinosaur drawing that he disliked, and set it aside on the
table. Bryon, his fellow classmate, looked at the crumpled, upright paper and proclaimed, “The dinosaur is walking!” I used this opportunity to help my students reevaluate the crumpled paper as a work of art. The following week the students worked on creating pop-up animal designs, a lesson plan that evolved from the outcome of the crumbled paper and one that they thoroughly enjoyed.
Wesley’s ‘walking dinosaur’ is just one of many experiences that illustrate how young people can develop innovative thinking through the arts. I think it also demonstrates how the arts impact a child’s creativity and curiosity, which inspires me to delve deeper into my own art practice and motivates me to apply the lessons that I have learned from my students. I am consistently amazed at how my students direct the creative process in new and unexpected directions.”

Our Mission
The Imagine Bus Project (TIBP) reaches children and youth in underserved communities to provide sustained, positive, and creative outlets for personal expression through the visual arts, which empowers our students to explore their potential, develop critical thinking, and build self-esteem.
We bring Teaching Artists to after school programs, juvenile justice centers, and youth organizations to engage over 2,000 Bay Area students a year in creative learning.
