    BACHELOR OF HEALTH SCIENCE(HONOURS) PROGRAMAs a student in the Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) (Honours)comprehensive degree program you will be introduced to a broad-basedfoundational curriculum that will enable you to select and build aprogram suited to meet your needs and provide you with an educationthat can open the door to a challenging career in a variety of health-care professions.

    The Faculty of Health Sciences has been particularly innovative inencouraging and developing specialized learning pathways within the fieldsof health information management and kinesiology. Through the integrationof various foundation disciplines within these specializations, you will gainan understanding of health issues from the biological, behavioural anddemographical principles that apply in professional practice.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    A minimum overall average of 70 per cent on six 4U or 4M credits

    HEALTH INFORMATIONMANAGEMENT SPECIALIZATIONRecognizing the increasing importance and role that health informationplays in todays health-care industry, the Faculty of Health Sciences offersa Bachelor of Health Science (Honours) Health Information Management(HIM). Our faculty is committed to excellence and research in healthinformation management and to that end, strives to prepare you tobecome an HIM leader nationwide.

    As a student in the HIM program you will be introduced to thefundamentals of HIM within the Canadian context, with an emphasis onthe biomedical sciences, health information science (including informationtechnology), privacy and security of health information, health informationanalysis and presentation (including epidemiology, research andstatistics), ethical practice and management theory as it applies to thehealth system and health information management. Our technology focuswill provide you with a strategic edge in the health information industry.

    KINESIOLOGY SPECIALIZATIONAs a student in the Kinesiology specialization you will study humanmovement and function with a focus on exercise and rehabilitation as itapplies to the sciences of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology andpsychomotor behaviour. In these areas of study, you will have theopportunity to take an in-depth look at the processes involved in motorcontrol and the stages of motor learning. Principles will be applied tovarious dysfunctions of the motor system including means of preventionand assessment. This program will provide you with the fundamentalknowledge to pursue graduate studies in medicine, physical therapy,occupational therapy and chiropractic. As a graduate of the program, youwill have completed the registration requirements to become a certifiedkinesiologist with the Ontario Kinesiology Association.

    BACHELOR OF HEALTHSCIENCEIN MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE(HONOURS)The BHSc in Medical Laboratory Science (Honours) degree is the first of its kind in Ontario. As a student in this program you will be introduced tothe exciting world of health science with a strong focus on medicalresearch. You will become skilled in the five main areas of the diagnostic

    laboratory chemistry, hematology, histotechnology, microbiology andtransfusion medicine. Professional communication, scientific writing andresearch skills will also be emphasized.

    With the health-care system becoming increasingly dependent onlaboratory testing to diagnose, monitor and treat disease, as a graduateof this program you will be in high demand.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    BACHELOR OF SCIENCEIN NURSINGAs new attitudes and objectives in healthcare redefine today's nursingprofessional this is an exciting time to embark on a nursing career.Our four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program, offeredcollaboratively with Durham College, will teach you the practise of scientifically-based nursing using theory, clinical skills and researchfindings from individual, family, group and community care.     REGISTEREDPRACTICAL NURSE TOBACHELOR OF SCIENCEIN NURSING PROGRAMThe post-diploma BScN program is an educational pathway available if you have successfully completed your Registered Practical Nursing (RPN)diploma from an approved program and are interested in pursuing yourdegree. As a student in the program you will build on your previous

    knowledge in science, nursing and additional disciplines, while beingintroduced to the latest in learning technologies to enhance your accessas a working professional. This program will provide you with the flexibilityto complete your degree in three years of full-time study or up to fiveyears of part-time study.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    As a RPN seeking admission to the BScN program, you must be agraduate from an approved RPN diploma program and you will be required

    to submit transcripts to confirm your diploma completion. Preference willbe given to individuals who have achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 or higher. In addition, applicants must hold a current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario.     MASTER OF HEALTH SCIENCESPROGRAMThe Master of Health Sciences program specializes in two areas of study: Health Informatics and Community Health. Students will acquirethe knowledge and skills required to conduct high-quality researchin those areas while being challenged to push their boundaries of thinking and learning.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:: Hold a four-year honours degree or its equivalent from a recognized

    institution in the area of graduate study or a closely relatedsubject; and

    :: Have an overall academic standing of at least a B (GPA = 3.0 on a4.0/4.3 scale), with a minimum B in the last two full-time years(four semesters) of undergraduate work or equivalent.

    HEALTH INFORMATICS SPECIALIZATION

    Health Informatics focuses on the effective use of knowledge andsimulation to improve health and healthcare. You will be immersed in aresearch-intensive learning environment that will provide you withresearch opportunities including patient journey modelling, data miningand security, clinical simulations, telehealth and artificial intelligence inhealth care. You will be prepared to design, implement and managesystems in a diverse range of health informatics services to moreefficiently and effectively deliver healthcare and promote the health of broader populations.

    COMMUNITY HEALTH SPECIALIZATION

    Focused on the environmental and social determinants of communityhealth, as a student in this program you will conduct research in areassuch as HIV/AIDS, kinesiology, nutrition, mental health and vulnerablepopulations. You will also have the opportunity to work with facultymembers and partner with community organizations, health departmentsand other agencies on community-based research projects. Graduates willbe in an excellent position to work in and with community organizations,health departments and other agencies to design research and analyzedata oriented toward understanding and promoting the well-being of targeted communities.

    As a student in our nursing programs, you will also have access to ourunique Interprofessional Centre of Excellence in Simulation, whichfeatures numerous simulated human beings, all of which are programmedto demonstrate many health conditions including different blood pressurereadings and the loss of vital signs.

    In addition, you will receive a personal digital assistant (PDA), a handheldcomputer loaded with the latest critical care software resources for usein simulation and within the practice setting and be introduced to Virtual

    Clinical Excursions, which will give you an interactive, virtual experiencewithin a hospital setting to further advance your practical skills.

    Nursing students are not the only ones who benefit from our innovativetechnology. As a student in the BScN (Honours) or BHSc in MedicalLaboratory Science (Honours) programs, you will apply scientific principlesto health care by performing sophisticated laboratory tests using the twostate-of-the-art health sciences laboratories we house oncampus.Technology is changing the face of health care, but theprofession will always be about the people. At UOITs Faculty of Health

    Sciences, you will learn how to successfully combine the technology andinterpersonal skills required to be successful in the 21st century.

As a result of theseinterconnected relationships, we continually strengthen the education,

    employment and research opportunities we offer to students.

    Building on our strong partnerships, members of our exceptional facultyalso launched the Health Education Technology Research Unit (HETRU) todevelop advanced technologies for creating teaching, learning andlearning assessment environments based on rigorous research evidence.HETRU is designed to be an academic-business hybrid that drivesadvances in research related to technology use in education; promotesbroadly-based partnerships among academics, institutions andbusinesses in Canada and other countries around the world; and

    develops technologies that will further advance health education from thenovice student to the expert practitioner.

    Our partnerships with local organizations such as Lakeridge HealthNetwork and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences alsoprovide our students with outstanding internships, placement and co-opopportunities. In addition, our mentorship program, in partnership withLakeridge Health, helps new graduates transition smoothly into theircareers with mentors providing years of experience and knowledge tograduates.     Our faculty members understand that hands-on experience will give youan edge in getting a job or in the pursuit of graduate studies andresearch careers and they are eager to provide you with opportunities toundertake research projects. Student-faculty research collaborationshappen on an ongoing basis and this unique one-on-one model is animportant part of our student experience.

    As a student studying within the Faculty of Health Sciences, you will have

    the opportunity to participate in research practicums during your fourthyear of study. Working alongside our world-class faculty, you will have theopportunity to gain hands-on research experience while turning innovativeideas into real solutions.

    Examples of current Health Science research projects include:

    :: Complementary and alternative medicine used by patients living withcancer in the Durham Region;

    :: Designing a next generation Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) healthinformatics infrastructure for Canada;

    :: Studying the impact of new multidisciplinary integrated service toindividuals living with HIV/AIDS;

    :: Studying common challenges faced by social service workers; and

    :: Using simulation to educate police officers about mental illness.

    Dr. Carolyn McGregor, an associate professor at UOIT, holds a Tier 2Canada Research Chair (CRC) in recognition of her research in healthinformatics, groundbreaking work that has the potential to save lives andlower health-care costs.

    The Med Lab program has been an amazing learning experience. All of

    the hands-on work and fantastic professors have helped to guide me

    and my peers for the past three years. I am extremely excited to put

    everything I have learned into use in my clinical placement during

    fourth year.

    A variety of fun activities and informative sessions are planned towelcome you to campus and assist you with the transition to university.In addition, the Student Life office works year-round to offer youcomprehensive orientation programming.

    Many students get connected through dozens of campus clubs includinggroups that relate to your program of study such as the Canadian NursingStudents Association and Med Lab United. Other students pursue apopular interest or topic like the Cheerleading Team, while organizationssuch as Student Harmony and Students Against Social Injustice worktoward a better world by advocating on key social issues.

    We even offer a Co-curricular Recognition program that supports andrecognizes your participation and leadership in campus activities.Leadership awards and recognition ceremonies are held for graduatingstudents in the spring.

    E.P. Taylors , one of UOITs campus pubs, is located in the Student Centreand is a popular spot to catch a regular lineup of great entertainment forall ages including comedy at lunch and Campus Idol. It even meritedmention from the Harvard Crimson online edition. To realize the potentialof an on-campus pub at Harvard, one need only look at places like E.P.Taylors at UOIT, wrote the Crimson. With comedy shows every Monday,pub nights every Wednesday and huge all-campus events Friday andSaturday, the establishment is everything any student could wish for.

    If your interests run more towards the political arena, you may want toconsider Your Student Association (Your SA) , which works hard to servethe needs of all students. If youre more the happy host, our StudentAmbassador program could be just your thing. Student Ambassadors are

    proactive leaders who introduce prospective students and their familiesto the UOIT community by leading campus tours and providing a currentstudents perspective.

    We also offer student life programs, which promote intellectual andpersonal growth by connecting you to existing campus opportunities andassisting with the development of new initiatives. Staff liaise with YourSA, the Student Centre, residences, student clubs, academic units and allstudent services to enhance your student satisfaction.
