2010-11 Parent Survey: District Results The early results for the 2010-11 Parent Survey, conducted by Denton ISD, have been released. There were 1,352 parents –an estimated 5.6 percent of the students’ parents - who responded to the survey. In October, the district issued a short survey asking parents/guardians for their opinions on a number of topics concerning the district and its schools. The survey was available online from Friday, Oct. 1, through Oct. 18, 2010. The survey covered a variety of topics and was aligned with district goals, which are established by the Board of Trustees. The topics include teaching and learning, safety and wellness, facilities and technology. The following is a breakdown of the survey results: Respondents: There were 1,352 parents – or an estimated 5.6 percent of the students’ parents - who responded to the survey. Parent residency: The largest number (387) had lived in Denton ISD from 5 - 10 years; 306 lived in Denton ISD for 10 - 20 years, and 276 lived in Denton ISD for 3 – 5 years. “I know how to reach my child’s teachers:” 97 percent stated that they strongly agreed or agreed. “School staff members are friendly:” 96 percent stated that they strongly agreed or agreed. In Communicating with Parents: 1,121 parents, or 83 percent of the respondents, said they get most of their information on their child’s school from their child(ren). There were 844 who said they received information from weekly folders /student agendas, and 833 from the teacher or school staff. There were 754 respondents who said they received information from Denton ISD’s website and 626 from the schools’ or teachers’ websites. Only 70 parents said they received information about their child’s school from news media outlets. For the questions at “my child’s school” – more than 90 percent of the parents responding were highly satisfied or satisfied in most areas. For example, 92 percent said the school provided feedback on their child’s performance, 91 percent that the school adequately supervised students, 82 percent said the school effectively resolved issues, and 84 percent stated that the principal was visible at their child(ren)’s school. There were 89 percent who said the schools were sensitive to the needs of a diverse population. “Counselor is available to address academics” 82 percent were highly satisfied or satisfied.

“School nurse addresses student’s health care” – 87 percent were highly satisfied or satisfied.

On Safety and Security, 95 percent were highly satisfied or satisfied that “My child feels safe at school” and 94 percent her highly satisfied or satisfied by “My child’s school supports positive behavior.”

“Curriculum and Instruction that my child receives is challenging:” 92 percent were highly satisfied or satisfied in all four core subject areas: English/Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.

“How is Denton ISD meeting the needs of your child:” 85 percent were highly satisfied or satisfied with technology skills; 95 percent were highly satisfied or satisfied with facilities being well maintained; 71 percent were satisfied with extra-curricular activities.
