Why are branded products more expensive?They aren’t always, so be sure to do your homework. However, in many cases branded products cost more than generic alternatives. This is because the original product developer can spend in excess of $100 million to do the research and development to bring a new product to market. They then have a small window of time in which to recover their investment and make a profit before patent protection runs out. Once a patent expires, others can bring the same active ingredient to market with limited costs for basic research or product development, such as identifying rates or studying plant safety. With limited costs, they copy existing information and sell it for less.

Are generic pesticides the same as the branded products?Rarely are the generic and branded products exactly the same. While the active ingredient (AI) is listed clearly on the label, there are several factors to consider. One factor is the formulation of the chemical. The formulation that a manufacturer uses is proprietary and when a product is copied, the formulation can vary significantly. The formulation can affect length of control, efficacy of control, and plant safety. Other meaningful factors include the source of the AI and manufacturing processes, which affect the size, quality and purity of the end product.

Are there risks involved with generic products?BFG Supply Co. has made every effort to select the best available alternative products for those who wish to use them. Traditional manufacturers of branded products have invested greatly in knowledge and people to make sure users understand how a product works and what to expect from it. Most generic manufacturers provide limited or no support when it comes to detailed product use questions. It would be unusual for a generic product to perform significantly different from the branded product, however subtle differences are not uncommon, such as how they look or smell, how well they mix in the tank, or length of efficacy, for example.

Branded Versus Generic – Which is Right for You?In today’s rapidly changing marketplace, growers have more choices than ever before. One of those choices is which pesticides are the best options for their individual needs. Here is a quick Q&A to help you.

Every grower should ask: “What is my goal with this application?”Depending on what you are trying to accomplish and what your motivations are, a generic may be an appropriate choice for you. Some growers demand only the lowest priced product. Others demand the confidence of a time-tested product with a support network when questions arise. Others are very appreciative of the long-term investment some companies have made in our industry, and want to see that legacy continue. For others, a low-value crop requires a low-priced input. 5. You tried to save a few pennies by using a lower rate.When lower than recommended rates are used, the herbicide concentration in the chemical barrier starts out low. And under typical degradation processes, it is soon degraded to the point where weeds can successfully germinate and grow. 4. You failed to use proper sanitation. If you neglect sanitation, especially in container nurseries, forget about controlling weeds. Herbicides alone will fail to provide sufficient weed control.

3. You topdressed fertilizers.Topdressing fertilizer is a common practice in container production. It is also a practice that will likely lead to poor weed control. It might be that increased microbial activity around elevated nitrogen concentrations (caused by topdressing) leads to accelerated microbial degradation of the herbicide. There is also a scant amount of research that suggests increased salinity reduces herbicide activity.

2. You did not calibrate your equipment. Improper calibration will result in improper herbicide rates being applied to your crops. When applying herbicides with a sprayer, be sure the sprayer is properly calibrated. Without regular calibration, you cannot know what rates are being applied.

1. You applied herbicides to soil that already had weeds.This is hands down the number one reason why herbicides fail to provide weed control. A common excuse is that “there wasn’t enough time” to weed the containers before applying the herbicide. Herbicides registered for use in nursery crops will not kill existing weeds (except for spray-applied Goal, which is only labeled for conifers or directed sprays). Container and/or fields must be weed-free before applying preemergence herbicides.

HERBICIDE HINTS: WHAT TO USE INSIDE THE GREENHOUSEWeed control in your greenhouse can be difficult, but it is important for many reasons. Weeds harbor disease and pests. Even if you have a solid pest control program in place, weeds around the outside of the greenhouse can provide a breeding ground for insects and disease that can enter the greenhouse through open vents.

When weed seeds get into your crop, then you have an even bigger mess! Whether it be annuals, perennials or nursery stock, hand weeding is expensive. Weeds can leave a bad impression with customers who take plants home only to find they contain weeds. Weeds are also unsightly and can be a safety hazard. Luckily, weeds can easily be controlled with a well planned herbicide program.

There are no pre-emergent herbicides labeled for use inside the greenhouse, except for Goal (read the label). This is because of potential volatility which causes herbicides to become a gas and move up into the crop on the bench. The damage can be devastating. Consider using Scythe or Reward.

Regardless of the types of crops grown in greenhouses, a few major weeds will usually be encountered. The big three are woodsorrel (Oxalis spp.), bittercress (Cardamine spp) and spurge (Euphorbia spp.). There are many reasons for the development of these weeds:

• Adaptability to various soil, air and light conditions.• Fast life cycle (short seed-to-fl ower production).• Prolifi c seed production.

WoodsorrelOf the several species of woodsorrel, probably the two most common are yellow woodsorrel (Oxalis stricta) and creeping woodsorrel (Oxalis corniculata). Both species have very similar weedy growth characteristics:

• Progression from seed to fl ower in fewer than 3 weeks.• Production of large amounts of seed.• Dispersion of seeds up to 12 feet.

BittercressThere are several species of bittercress, but probably the most common is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta L.). Others that may be encountered are smallfl owered bittercress (Cardamine parvifl ora L.) and less-seededbittercress (Cardamine oligosperma L.).

• Progression from seed to fl ower in approximately 3 weeks.• Production of large amounts of seed.• Dispenses seeds several feet by a special mechanism in the wall of the fruit.

SpurgeLow-growing or creeping spurges (Figure 9) are represented by approximately 11 species. They can be identifi ed by the milky sap produced when a leaf or stem is broken off. The two most common spurges encountered are prostrate spurge (Euphorbia humistrata) and spotted spurge (E. maculata). Most of the species encountered in the greenhouseare annuals. Other weedy characteristics include:

TIPS FORSUCCESSFUL ROOTINGTreating cuttings with root-promoting compounds can be a valuable tool in stimulating rooting of some plants that might otherwise be diffi cult to root. Prevent possible contamination of the entire supply of rooting hormone by putting some in a separate container before treating cuttings. Any material that remains after treatment should be discarded and not returned to the original container. Be sure to tap the cuttings to remove excess hormone when using a powder formulation.

FOR best results, plant growth regulators (PGRs) should be handled as production tools, like water

and fertilizer. They should not be used as crutches for poor management of other cultural practices. PGRs should be an integrated part of your crop production cycle.

They are most effective when applied at the appropriate times to regulate plant growth or development. In other words, growth retardants cannot "shrink" an overgrown plant. They must be applied before the plant is overgrown to avoid plant stretch. When planning PGRs in your production schedule, consider what you want to accomplish with the treatment. – Do you want to reduce the growth rate of the plant, improve its color and general condition (toughness)?– Do you want to increase plant branching for enhanced cutting production, or for a more bushy potted plant or hanging basket? – Do you want to enhance flower initiation or synchronize flowering?

Answering these questions will indicate which type of PGR you need to use to accomplish your goal. It also will determine the most appropriate timing of the application. Then you will need to select a specific PGR in that class and determine the appropriate dosage and the appropriate application method for the selected application. Always consider any rate recommendation as a starting point for your own trials and keep records of your success and failures with plant growth regulators. Whenever you treat your crop, hold back a few untreated plants so that you can judge the effectiveness of your treatment. Methods of application have significant effects on results. Develop your own program. Then test and refine it. Achieving the best results with plant growth regulators is a combination of art and science.

A brand name is the name — usually a trademark — used by a chemical company to identify a pesticide product. The common name (or the chemical name, if no common name is given) is the most accurate and useful way to identify a pesticide product.

Q. Name and explain the meaning of the signal words and symbols you may see on a pesticide product.

A. "Caution" indicates that the pesticide product is slightly toxic or relatively nontoxic. "Warning" indicates that the pesticide product is moderately toxic. "Danger" indicates that the pesticide product is highly toxic. "Poison" and the skull and crossbones symbol indicates that the pesticide product is highly toxic as a poison, rather than as a skin or eye irritant.

A. It is illegal to use a pesticide in any way not permitted by the labeling. A pesticide may be used only on the plants, animals, or sites named in the directions for use. You may not use higher dosages, higher concentrations, or more frequent applications. You must follow all directions for use, including directions concerning safety, mixing, diluting, storage, and disposal. You must wear the specifi ed personal protective equipment even though you may be risking only your own safety by not wearing it.

Q. Does the pesticide label contain all the instructions and directions for use that you need to use the product safely and legally?

A. Some pesticide products have all the necessary instructions and directions for use on the product label. For other products, more instructions and directions may be in other labeling that accompanies the product at the time of purchase. The label or labeling of still other products may refer to separate documents that contain specialized instructions and directions. Pesticide users are required by law to comply with all these types of instructions and directions -- not just with the label itself.
