Winona State SEASON OUTLOOK Scott Ballard has brought unprecedented success to the Winona State women’s basketball team, and his team has all the pieces in place to continue their run of strong play. It was a young team that fi nished 17-11 a season ago and posted a 12-8 mark in the NSIC. Winona State lost talented scorer Ana Wurtz and post presence Bonnie Bjorke, but will look to retool around a talented group of sophomores and juniors who are already veterans in the Warrior system and structure. Posts Natalie Gigler and Michelle McDonald bring stability and productivity up front for the Warriors, while Katie Wolff and Marieanna Dulas emerged into key cogs as freshmen a season ago. A large crop of talented newcomers will provide fresh faces as the Warriors look to continue their run of success. Winona State has averaged nearly 21 wins a season over the last three years, reaching new heights as a program. The Warriors won a school record 24 games in 2008-09 and advanced to the NCAA Central Regional Tournament for the fi rst time in school history.

THE BACKCOURT Wolff and Dulas bring the promise of stability to the Winona State backcourt for years to come. Both players contributed imme-diately as freshmen, seeing signifi cant minutes and responsibility on the fl oor. Dulas started all 28 games of her freshman season. She led the Warriors with 117 assists, facilitating an offense that averaged 71 points per game. She contributed better than fi ve points a game as well. Wolff started nine games of her freshman campaign and played in all 28 contests. A lights-out shooter, she hit 49% of her three-point attempts (48-of-98). She was third on the team with 79 as-sists while also collecting 25 steals. She capped off the year with a selection to the NSIC All-Freshman team. Senior Afton Glander provides a veteran presence and proven productivity at guard as well. A three-year player for Ballard, Glander dished out 69 assists and had 24 steals. She started ten of her 28 games a season ago as well. Four new faces will also be counted on to provide depth and energy to the Warrior backcourt. Beth Alberson transferred to Wi-nona State after playing the last two seasons at Centenary. She averaged nearly fi ve points per contest in 34 games in her fi rst two collegiate seasons. She made 28 three-pointers as a freshman in 2008-09, providing an added outside shooting threat. Freshmen Darcey Rice, Kelsey Andrist and Tessa Wells will all be asked to contribute. Guard Becca Friestleben will be on the roster but will sit out the season after transferring from St. Cloud State. She averaged 13 points per game a season ago for the Hus-kies.

THE FRONTCOURT Winona State returns a pair of outstanding posts, giving the team a fantastic inside-outside combination. Senior Natalie Gigler and junior Michelle McDonald provide two experienced posts that are comfortable with the grueling NSIC slate. Gigler was an All-NSIC Second Team selection a season ago after averaging 11.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game as a junior. Gigler is just 21 points away from becoming the 13th player in school history to reach 1,000 points. She has averaged 11.0 points

per game in her WSU career. Gigler is joined in the post by McDonald, a player who was second on the WSU squad in scoring (11.9 PPG) a season ago and led the team with 7.5 rebounds per game. An extremely effi cient scorer, McDonald hit 123 of her 206 shot attempts, shooting at a .597 percent clip. Michelle Tobin showed signs of being a force down low as well, seeing action in 22 games as a freshman. She averaged 3.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in just 12 minutes a game. The frontcourt will be solidifi ed with the additions of Abby Busch, Lizzi Naumann and Caitie Zepczyk. Busch already has a season in the Warrior system under her belt, having redshirted last year. Naumann is a sophomore who transferred from Drake. In 23 games last season for the Bulldogs she scored a total of 24 points and netted 28 rebounds. Zepczyk is a freshman from Ashland, Wis. All three will be called on to contribute for the Warriors.

THE OUTLOOK The Warriors were tabbed to place fourth in the NSIC in a vote of conference coaches. Winona State has moved into the upper segment of the conference with their consistent strong play. WSU has 21, 24 and 17 victories in the last three years, and boasts the school’s fi rst NCAA postseason victory. Wayne State claimed the top spot in the preseason poll with Au-gustana, Concordia-St. Paul, Minnesota Duluth and the Warrior nipping on their heels. Top to bottom, the NSIC is as deep as any conference in the nation, with no easy wins on any team’s sched-ule.

Beginning his 30th season coaching women’s basketball, Winona State Head Coach Scott Ballard brings to the Warriors over 500 combined high school and college career wins. The 2009-10 sea-son marks Ballard’s sixth year at Winona State. Since being named head coach at Winona State, Ballard has started a winning tradition for the Warriors similar to the winning traditions he established at the other schools he has coached. Prior to Ballard’s arrival as head coach, the Warriors had six winning seasons, never hosted a play-off game, or fi nished in the top four in the conference.

The 2008-09 season was a historic season for Ballard and the War-riors as they earned a second place fi nish in the Northern Sun Inter-collegiate Conference, the highest fi nish in program history. They set a program record with 24 wins, to go along with a conference record of 15-5. The Warriors advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the fi rst time in school history, where they won their fi rst NCAA Tournament game, 78-55, over Colorado State-Pueblo. The 2008-09 season also marked the fi rst time in school history the Warriors fi nished back-to-back seasons with over 20 wins as well as the fi rst time the program has had three straight winning seasons. The season also included a school-record 11 game winning streak in addition to the Warriors hosting the NSIC Tournament.

The Warriors closed out the season with the second ranked offense and defense in the NSIC. Ballard coached Warrior players who led the NSIC in assists (Molly Anderson), free throw percentage (Jenny Steffen), three point fi eld goals made (Ana Wurtz) and were second in the NSIC in scoring (Wurtz) and three point fi eld goal percentage (Wurtz).

Five Warriors (Steffen, Wurtz, Kelsey Homewood, Natalie Gigler, and Anderson) earned All-NSIC honors following the 2008-09 sea-son. Wurtz also earned selection to the All-Central Region Team.

The 2007-08 season saw the Warriors set a school record for wins in a season as Ballard and his Warriors fi nished 21-9. The season ended with the Warriors fi nishing third in the NSIC and hosting a playoff game for the fi rst time in school history. The season also capped off back-to-back winning seasons for the Warriors which has only happened one other time in school history. Ballard’s War-riors fi nished the season leading the nation in free throw percent-age at 79.4%. The Warriors also won recognition for their work in the classroom with three members of the Warriors earning NSIC All-Academic honors.

In 2009, Ballard’s Warriors earned a tie for 9th place on the Wom-en’s Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Team Hon-or Rolls with a team grade point average of 3.52. This marked a second consecutive year the Warriors received academic recogni-tion under Ballard. In 2006-07 the Warriors’ earned a team GPA of 3.46 which ranked seventh in the nation in team GPA. WSU

fi nished 17th in team GPA in 2007-08 with a 3.413 average.

The 2007-08 season set a personal milestone for Ballard as he re-corded his 300th career collegiate coaching victory. The 300th win came on Nov. 17, 2007 with an 80-45 victory over Wisconsin-River Falls. Ballard has compiled a career record of 359-214 in 20 seasons coaching college women’s basketball which ranks him 25th in career wins among all NCAA Division II women’s basket-ball coaches. Ballard set the season win record at Missouri Southern State as well with 27 wins in 1992-93. While at Missouri Southern State, Ballard coached three All-Americans and won the MIAA Tournament Championship in 1994.
