The most significant contribution Nye has madeto Penn State and eastern collegiate golf history cameat the end of the 1995-96 season, when he led the Nit-tany Lions to the NCAA Finals with a ninth placefinish in the NCAA East Regional.

With their triumphant finish at the East Regional, the Nittany Lions became the first team from eitherof the NCAA's eastern sections - District I or II - toadvance to the finals since the regional format wasestablished in 1987.

In 2004, his Nittany Lions rocked the collegiategolf world by nearly winning the NCAA EastRegional, finishing second out of 27 teams, of whichseven teams were ranked in the nation’s Top 15. Oneof the teams finishing behind the Lions was the No. 1ranked Florida Gators. The Nittany Lions then wenton to finish 15th among 30 teams at the NCAAFinals, making Penn State golf history with its highestteam finish ever.

"The 1996, 2004 and 2008 teams were very spe-cial,” said Nye. “More importantly, those were verytough minded and believed they could be successfulagainst the higher ranked teams.”

Personal Milestone

at Marshall InvitationalIn April 2007, Nye marked a personal achieve-

ment while the Nittany Lions celebrated their victoryat the Marshall Invitational, beating the next best teamby 12 strokes. The championship, won on a coolsnowy weekend at the Guyan Golf and Country Club, was the 50th of Nye's coaching career. His careercoaching win total now stands at 57.

Academic & AthleticExcellence

In addition to the team's success on the course,Nye has continually stressed strong performance in theclassroom. In 15 of 19 seasons at Penn State, the Nit-tany Lions have achieved a team grade point averagegreater than 3.00. In 2000-01, Nye's team posted thebest G.P.A. of any of the 29 teams at Penn State. Nyehas coached 17 GCAA All-American Scholars, oneGTE Academic All-American and each year he hasseen a high percentage of the team rewarded for theiracademic achievements with Academic All-Big Tenhonors.

Nye's teams have ranked near or at the top of theMid-Atlantic Region and qualified for the NCAA EastRegional 17 times. His squads also won the EasternChampionship three straight seasons, 1993-95, andin 1997.

Nye was voted the NCAA District II Coach of theYear in 1993, 1994, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2008 and2009. He has coached 39 NCAA All-District players, five Mid-Atlantic Region Players of the Year, eight All-Big Ten selections, as well as four NCAAAll-Americans. Itwas a big challenge to even conduct practice for a fewyears. He was instrumental in helping us perseverethrough that four year period. What was real specialabout that period was the performance of the teamseemed to go hand-in-hand with the improvement ofour facilities, and Coach Dunlap had a big hand inmaking that happen.”

Since Fall 2005, Nittany Lion golfers have receivednumerous accolades including two GCAA All-Amer-icans, one Golfweek All-American, three AcademicAll-Americans, five All-Big Ten selections (First or Sec-ond Team) and one Big Ten Freshman of the Year. “Coach Dunlap is involved with nearly everyaspect of our program here at Penn State. He has andbrings a high level of energy to the team every day, andconsistently guides our student athletes through theexpectations we as a staff have set forth for our pro-gram,” said Nye.

Before arriving at Penn State, Dunlap was theHead Coach at Kennesaw State University (GA) forfour seasons.

IN MEMORIAMMIKE CARTER’S LEGACY LIVES

ON WITH TREE AND SCHOLARSHIP

The Penn State golf family is still healing from theloss of Mike Carter — the spunky and colorful sopho-more player from Westfield, N.J. who passed away onFebruary 13, 2002.

Carter, who was known around the course and acrosscampus for his upbeat attitude and engaging personality, was returning home when his car lost control and went offthe roadway.

Penn State was devastated and the Nittany Lion’s golf family mourned and remembered theirfallen teammate with unity and grace. The men’s team wore pink pants as a tribute to Carter atthe 2002 Rutherford Invitational, the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA East Regional.

“He was a very bright light on our team and we will always remember how he lived each dayto the fullest,” said Coach Nye.

To ensure that the memory of Mike Carter lives on in perpetuity, the Penn State golf familyand the Carter family have taken two significant measures. In the spring of 2002, the Penn Stateteam and coaches planted a red maple tree near the 18th hole on the home Blue Course in StateCollege, Pa. and dedicated it, with a plaque, to Mike Carter.

In 2003, Michael and Mary Lou Carter endowed a grant in the name of their son to beawarded annually to the golf program.

Flowers and a pictorial were placed in memoriam atthe Penn State Golf Course Club House.

As a tribute to Michael, the 2002 men’s golf teamwore Carter’s signature pink pants at the RutherfordInvitational and in post-season play.

Ninth in East Regional, Nittany Lions Appear

In 1996 NCAA Finals

Following a solid regular season that included three tournament titles, theNittany Lions peaked at the end of the 1996 spring term. After finishing sec-ond at the Eastern Championships and sixth at the Big Ten Championships,Penn State surged at the NCAA East Regional, which was played on the Mon-ster Course at the Concord Resort in Kiamesha Lake, N.Y. Facing the best teams in Eastern golf, the Nittany Lions came off the teebox with first round ferocity, finishing in a five-way tie for seventh place af-ter an opening round 310. Senior Adam Decker (left) led with a two-over 74. In the second round, Penn State improved its team score by six strokes, but fell into a three-way tie for 15th — below the cut line that qualified thetop 11 teams for the NCAA Finals. Decker fired a 71 to keep the Lions incontention. In the final round, the Nittany Lions ripped apart the Concord course, making shot after pivotal shot in a miraculous run that ended with a 296 —the third-best score of the day — to tie for ninth place and a berth in theNCAA Finals. Byron Clift (right), a junior, led the Lions with a final round 72. Deckershot a 74 to tie for second place on the individual leaderboard with a total219, a monumental achievement for the senior, who came to the squad as afreshman walk-on. Seniors Dirk Ayers and Mike Banzhoff and sophomoreJoey Chuasiriporn all finished with 75 for the final round and the three-round team total of 910 tied with Tennessee and Alabama.

The Lions’ berth in the Finals was not only monumental for Penn State, but for the entire Eastern region as the Lions became the first team in therelatively short history of both Districts I and II to reach the Finals. For the first time since 1987, Penn State headed to the NCAA Finals, held in 1996 at the challenging Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. PennState played well, but failed to make the team cut after two rounds. Ayersled Penn State individually, making the individual cut and finishing in a tiefor 47th place overall after an opening round 71. Penn State placed 29thoverall as a team, which at the time was the top finish of any Big Ten teamat the Finals.

The Lions’ berth in the Finals was not only monu-mental for Penn State, but for the entire Eastern re-gion as the Lions became the first team in the historyof both Districts I and II to reach the Finals.

The first golf holes were laid out on thePenn State campus in the late 1800’s. Thegame became more and more popular and

eventually became a 9-hole course in 1901.Known as the Golf Club of State College, the clubbecame so popular that fifty percent of the facultyand students played the game. The possible loca-tion of this routing existed near the currentlocation of Pollock Hall with some claiming thatthe location was closer to the present location ofBeaver Stadium.

In December of 1908, a new club was pro-posed and the generous support of Mr. H. WaltonMitchell, a strong alumnus and faithful alumnitrustee, and other owners leased land known asthe Dale Farm at a reduced rate for the purpose ofa new club. The land was maintained by thecourse caretaker who lived in the farmhouse withtheir family and not only maintained the coursewith a flock of sheep but also would earn part payfrom the produce he could raise off the land notoccupied by the links. It is believed that the areaof land is where parts of the current White Courseare located today.

Former Penn State Athletic Director HugoBezdek, hired in 1918, wanted the University tohave better golf facilities and eventually a varsityteam. In 1921, with public school money and adream in his bag, Bezdek lured Golf ProfessionalRobert B. Rutherford Sr., from New Britain, CTto oversee the change from a nine-hole course toan 18-hole championship course. Bezdek andRutherford hired Willie Park Jr., an internation-ally known figure in the golfing world, and haddesigned some of the best courses in both theUnited States and Europe. Park, a native of Mus-selburgh, Scotland won The British Open in 1887and 1889.

The annual college championship was apopular event that was contested each fall on thecollege links. In 1922, Rutherford, nicknamed“Pop”, was named Head Coach and organized thefirst men’s golf team at Penn State. It was from thecollege championship that Rutherford wouldform the first varsity team. The team memberswere: J.W. Crookston (Captain), F.E. Dale, T.F.Connell, J.L. Bair, and C.M. Andrews (Manager). The first match in Penn State varsity golf historywas played on the new campus course on May 26,1922. The Nittany Lion golfers were defeated bythe University of Pennsylvania in their intercolle-giate debut by a score of four to three. Had theLions defeated Penn, they likely would have beeninvited to The Intercollegiates (National Champi-onship).

In 1923, intercollegiate golf began to takeshape. Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Dart-mouth, Columbia, Penn, and Williams developedplans to form a golf league. With the steadygrowth and interest in golf at Penn State, it wasonly a matter of time before Penn State joined. Each team in the league was to play matches andthe team with the best record was declared thechampion. With the 1923 Nittany Lion schedulefinalized, word was received in April that PennState had been admitted to the IntercollegiateGolf League. Penn State would begin league playin 1924. The 1923 schedule included matchesagainst Princeton, Lock Haven CC, Penn, andPittsburgh. The Lions would finish their secondseason of intercollegiate golf with a 6-1 record andwere invited to The Intercollegiates where theywent on to finish in 8th place. The first unde-feated season in school history occurred in 1927.That year, Penn State went 5-0-1. The Lionsproved to always be a challenge on the links dur-ing Pop’s years. The Lions only had three losingseasons from 1927 to 1942.

The War Years Through theMid-Fifties

With the major developments of World WarII in the mid 1940’s Rutherford was forced tohave a limited schedule in 1943 & 44 and wasunable to field a team in 1945 & 46. Varsity golfreturned to Penn State in 1947 with a limitedschedule. The Lions played five dual matches, fin-ishing third at the EIGA Championship and 25that The Intercollegiate. Rutherford’s team went onto have three more undefeated campaigns withthe most significant being in 1948. The 1948squad went into the EIGA Playoffs with anunblemished record of 3-0. The linksmen wenton to beat Pitt 8-1, Cornell 6-3 and Army 9-0 toreach the EIGA Championships in Atlantic City,NJ. In the first round of the finals, Penn Statewent on to beat a tough Georgetown squad by ascore of 6-3. Penn State had reached the champi-onship match for the first time in school history.Penn State’s previous best finish at the EIGAFinals had been in 1947 where they finished inthird.

The 1948 squad, captained by Donald Hart, was not going to be denied the afternoon of May15th, 1948. The Nittany Lions came out hot andwould not cool down. All six Lions would wintheir matches in dominating fashion and there-fore also claim the three best-ball matches. Theywent on to shut out 21-time NCAA Champion,Yale, by a score of 9-0 and became the first Non-Ivy league school to win the EIGAChampionship. Coach Boyle was a starting mem-ber of the 1948 team and remembered the historymade by winning the EIGA with a twinkle in hiseye.

“We were so excited to win the EasternIntercollegiate as those Ivy teams were awfully-tough in those days,” said Joe Boyle.

The team would go on to finish the seasonundefeated with a record of 10-0 and would goon to finish in 16th place at the NCAA Champi-onships in Palo Alto, California.

The first Grant-in-Aid (Golf Scholarship)was awarded to Rod Eaken of Reading, Pa. In theearly summer of 1950, a freshman to be, RodEaken received some disheartening news. He hadreceived a letter from Penn State advising that, due to budgetary restrictions, five sports had beendiscontinued.

During the summer months there was atleast one invitational golf tournament held eachweek at some of the best country clubs in thePhiladelphia area. One of the weekly competitorsin these invitationals was a Penn State Alumnusand member of the Penn State Board of Direc-tor’s: Fred Waring. Fred owned the famousShawnee-on-the-Delaware resort and had hisworld famous band “The Pennsylvanians” basedthere.

In June of 1950, while playing at ScrantonCountry Club, Rod Eaken’s competitor that weekwas none other then Fred Waring. During theround, Rod approached Mr. Waring and askedhim if he was aware that Penn State had droppedthe golf team? Fred was outraged and said to Rod,“Penn State will have a Golf Team if I have to payfor it myself.”

Rod, obviously elated, wondered if FredWaring would actually do something. He hadnever heard another word from Mr. Waring butwhen he returned to school in September, theGolf Team had been reinstated. It was not until

several years later that the other sports werereinstated.

Rutherford Jr. continued to build upon thesuccess of his father. In his inaugural season ascoach, Rutherford Jr. led PSU senior TommySmith to the NCAA Championship in New Mex-ico. Although his teams did not claim an EIGAChampionship, his teams finished the 1953 and1955 seasons undefeated. In his seven year span asHead Coach, Rutherford Jr. finished with a careermark of 50-13.

Coach Joe Boyle –Match Play to Medal

In 1957, a new Coach was named in JoeBoyle. Coach Boyle’s first day of work as the PennState golf coach just happened to be the same dayas that of legendary football coach Joe Paterno.Boyle worked as Rutherford Jr.’s assistant and wasa member of the historic 1948 EIGA Champi-onship team and captain of the 1949 team. Boylewasted little time building off of Rutherford’s suc-cesses. In his first year as coach, his squad went10-2 and finished second in the EIGA Champi-onship. In his 25 years as Head Coach, Boyle’steams won seven EIGA Championships, includ-ing back-to-back titles in 1963 and 1964 and astring of three from 1971-1973. He had a teamor individual compete for Penn State at theNational Championship in 19 of his 25 years withthe team and had a best finish of 16th Place in

1969. Boyle finished his coaching career with adual match record of 197-38-1 which includedseven undefeated seasons. He was an active mem-ber in the Golf Coaches Association of Americaand served as the associations President in 1967-68. Boyle was inducted in the GCAA Hall ofFame in 1987 and was the recipient of theGCAA’s highest award, The Honor Award in2007. The Honor Award which began in 1985 isawarded annually to a member of the GCAA Hallof Fame who is retired and has made a significantcontribution to the game of golf.

Boyle coached in an era that had a lot ofchange in collegiate golf. Part way through hiscoaching career intercollegiate golf gradually wentaway from traditional dual matches (Match Play)to stroke-play tournaments involving a numberof teams. The Lions went from playing 10-15dual-matches a year to 6-8 stroke play tourna-ments. One of the first and favorite tournamentsthat the Lion golfers became regular participantsin was the Indiana (PA) Invitational played at theIndiana Country Club. The Lions claimed theirfirst IUP title in 1964 and went on to win the title10 out of the next 11 years. With the popularityof intercollegiate golf growing across the nation, districts were also created to select the top teamsfrom various areas of the country. Under Boyle, the Lions were traditionally one of the top rankedteams in District II, made up of the northernMid-Atlantic States.

William (Bill) Davidson is an importantname in the history of Penn State golf. He becamethe programs first ever champion of the EIGAChampionship and first All-American in 1959. Inthe 1958 EIGA Championship, Davidson beatteammate Johnny Felus in the Semifinals andwent on to win the title the next day beating TedWeiss of Yale. He was named team captain for the1959 squad. In his career, Davidson qualified forthe NCAA Championship all three years he was aNittany Lion (1957, 1958 & 1959). He finishedhis career with a regular season match-play recordof 22-9.

In the fall of 1969, a young freshman fromJamestown, NY enrolled at Penn State. DanO’Neill immediately made an impact becomingthe Lions No. 1 man by mid spring of 1970 andfinished in 12th place at the NCAA Champi-onship. That finish earned him All-Americanhonors which he would achieve in each of his nextthree years with the Nittany Lions, becoming thefirst four-time All-American. In the summer of1972, Dan O’Neill qualified for the U.S. Openat Pebble Beach and made the 36-hole cut. Hiscut making putt was seen live across the nationon ABC.

Penn State golf began in 1922 with its first official collegiate schedule. From 1927 to 1942,the Nittany Lions only had three losing seasons.

In the late 1960’s golf became so popular onthe University Park campus, that administrationdecided to build a second golf course. The newcourse was named the “Blue” and was built on thefar west portion of the campus property and hada separate entrance off of College Ave. The origi-nal campus course was renamed the “White”course. The Blue course would open in 1970 at apar of 72 and length of 7,010 yards. It had 87bunkers and three ponds. The course wasdesigned by the architecture firm of Harrison &Grabin and built by university employees. Itbecame the primary course for all Penn StateIntercollegiate competitions.

Kennedy Leads Lions to Atlantic 10 Dominance

In January 1982, Mary Kennedy-Zierke, thewomen’s coach at the time, was promoted to headcoach of the men & women’s teams following theretirement of Joe Boyle. “Fall” collegiate golf wasnow a norm and Coach Kennedy-Zierke led anumber of successful teams in her 10 years as headcoach. Kennedy, an outstanding teacher, devel-oped several all district players and guided theLions to prominence in eastern golf her last fiveyears with the program. She was named District IICoach of the Year in 1987 and 1991. Her teamsclaimed six Atlantic 10 Conference Championshipsincluding five in a row from 1986-1990.

Through this period of Penn State golf ,nearly all competition was still eastern based.Through these years, Coach Kennedy’s teamimproved year after year, nearly always atop theleader board in District II competitions. Overallunder Kennedy’s guidance the Lions won 19events, and twice she was named District II Coachof the Year.

The program was given a big lift in the mid1980’s when the massive indoor facility, HolubaHall, was completed. This free span structure cov-ers two indoor 80-yard practice fields side-by-side.The 118,000-square foot facility, complete withthe latest indoor turf surface, provided the Lionswith a facility to get an early start on each spring.

In 1992, with the development and expan-sion of the “West” Campus and theinconvenience of running the golf operation fromtwo separate locations, both the Blue and Whitecourses underwent a major facelift. The $1.5 mil-lion expansion was generated through the golfcourse facilities. The golf operation became moreefficient with the renovation project of bothcourses would begin play from the Blue CoursePro Shop and eventually the Walker Clubhouse.

Nye - Builds and Goes National in Scope

On Aug, 28, 1992 it was announced thatformer Bowling Green head men’s & women’scoach, Greg Nye, would take over the men’s teamfrom retiree Men’s and Women’s coach MaryKennedy-Zierke and lead the Lion golfers in theBig Ten Conference. In Nye’s first season as theLions’ coach, he led them to six team champi-onships including the 1993 EasternChampionship. The Lions finished eighth in theBig Ten Championship and were the top rankingteam in District II. Eventually, they finished theseason in a tie for 16th at the NCAA EastRegional played in Charlottesville, Virginia.Freshman Dirk Ayers was named the Big TenFreshman of the Year.

The 1993-94 season was one for the recordbooks. In Coach Greg Nye’s second year at thehelm, the Nittany Lions went on to claim eighttournament titles. Penn State was in its secondyear as a member of the Big Ten Conference andthe Nittany Lions went to Madison, Wisconsinand finished in sixth place.

When the newest edition of the Blue andWhite golf courses opened in 1994, golfers weregreeted with completely new routings for bothcourses. The back nine of the Blue Course fromthe 1970 design became the current front nineand a new nine-holes, designed by Tom Clark,1971 Penn State graduate was built for the BlueCourse as the back nine. The new Blue Coursewas completely opened for play on May 13, 1994with a par of 72 and length of 6,525 yards. TheWhite Course was reduced to 12 holes and sixnew holes were added, becoming a par 70, 6,008yard layout.

With the NCAA Regional system put intoplay in 1989 the Nittany Lions qualified annuallyfor the NCAA East Regional and reached theNCAA Finals in 1996. The 1996 Nittany Lionteam made history, becoming the first northeastgolf program to qualify for NCAA finals sinceregionals began. Adam Decker, a one time PennState walk – on, nearly won the NCAA EastRegional finishing second, and went on the fol-lowing year to make the All American team.

Following their historic achievement in thespring of 1996, the Lions wasted no time provingthat they were once again the top team in DistrictII. Like in 1994, the Nittany Lions captured arecord eight tournament titles.

With 29 team titles in six seasons, Penn Statewas dominating the northeast and changed itsschedule to a more national one. Over the nextfive seasons, the Lions traveled to such places as

Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Cal-ifornia, Colorado and Hawaii. Though these yearsthe Nittany Lions were lead by the program’s 13thAll American, Matt Abbott.

The product of a more difficult schedulecame together for the 2003-04 team. Early in thefall of 2003, the Nittany Lions captured threetournament titles in a row. The key to the sched-ule that season was winning the MacDonald Cup,hosted by Yale University. The Yale University GCwas the host of the springs NCAA East Regional. After 36 holes of the Regional, the Nittany Lionswere shocking the college golf world. In the leadwith 18 holes to play, the Lions ended up finish-ing second behind Clemson University. Nye’steam went on to beat No. 1-ranked Florida, aswell as Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn, andNorth Carolina. Two weeks later, the Lions wouldride the momentum of their regional finish andbecome the first northeast golf team of the strokeplay era to make the cut at the NCAA Finals.Mark Leon went on to finish in sixth place andbecame Penn State’s 14th All-American.

In the spring of 2005, in order to competewith Big Ten Conference facilities, the BlueCourse and varsity practice facilities underwenttheir most recent renovation and additions. TheBlue course was lengthened some 700 yards to7,228 yards. Water hazards were added to holestwo, three, five and 15. The most significantchanges to the Blue Course occurred on holesseven and eight. Hole seven became 465 yards, par four and hole eight was reduced to 215 yards, par three. New tee boxes, two fairway bunkers, apitch green, and practice bunker were added tothe practice facilities located on the range. A newtwo-plus acre varsity short-game area was built for

the teams behind the 14th green of the BlueCourse. The area includes a 13,000 sq ft. puttingand chipping green and an 10,000 sq. ft. “impact”green, surrounded by three fairways and bunkersof four different styles.

A big change occurred to college golf in thesummer of 2007. The NCAA Golf Committeehad decided to change the NCAA Regional qual-ification system. Districts no longer existed andqualifying for Regional play was now based purelyon a team’s national rank.

Big National Wins Bring Highest Ranking

In the fall of 2007, Indiana played host tothe Wolf Run Intercollegiate where the Lionswould knock off Big Ten rivals Indiana, Michi-gan, and Northwestern as well as SEC teams likeKentucky and Arkansas to claim the first of twoconsecutive wins. The confident Lions went toRichmond, Va., the next week and defended theirVCU Shootout title. In that victory, Penn Stateknocked off perennial top 25 teams Wake Forestand North Carolina. Kevin Foley claimed theindividual title with a 15-under par performance. The following week the Lions received their high-est ever national ranking, 6th in the nation. Theywere also named Golfweek Magazine “Team ofthe Week” for their recent play. The Lions wouldfinish the regular season with a stunning head-to-head record of 119-15-0. At the Central Regional, led by a second place finish from two time All BigTen selection Robert Rohanna, the Lions finishedtied for eighth place and advanced on to theNCAA Finals hosted by Big Ten member PurdueUniversity. After three rounds of play at theNCAA Finals the Lions stood in 25th place of the30 teams and would miss the 54-hole cut. KevinFoley advanced as an individual to the final roundand finished 23rd and became Penn State’s 15thAll-American. Coach Greg Nye was named MidAtlantic Region Coach of the Year for the sixthtime.

The Rutherford Intercollegiate, hostedby Penn State, has become one of the topevents in the Northeast. The tournament, which was played in the fall for the firsttime in August, 2008, annually features atop field of Eastern teams and severalteams from around the nation.

The Nittany Lions have dominatedthe Rutherford since it was established asthe Nittany Lion Invitational in 1975,winning the tournament 17 times. Four-teen Penn State golfers have medaled atopthe leaderboard, the last featuring RobertRohanna in 2007. The Nittany Lions fin-ished in third place behind Purdue and

VCU in the latest installment of the tradition. The 2008 Fall Rutherford Intercollegiate was the 33rd edition of the tourna-

ment. For the first time the tournament was held at Nemacolin Woodlands Resorton the Mystic Rock golf course.

The tournament became known as the Rutherford Intercollegiate in 1983 tohonor R.B. “Pop” Rutherford Sr., the man known to the Nittany Lions as the “fatherof Penn State golf.” Rutherford organized the first Penn State golf team in 1922 andcoached it until 1949.
