DaviD ShuSter

head Coach

David Shuster is in his fourth season as the head golf coach at Houston Baptist University. Shuster was hired in June of 2007 to head of the rebirth of the golf programs at HBU, dormant since the late 1980’s. He oversees both the men’s and women’s programs. Last season, the women claimed the Great West Conference championship and Shuster was named conference coach of the year. He helped guide Gaia Olcese to the individual title and con-ference player of the year honors and Balbina Guajardo to new-comer of the year honors. Paige Gibson and Natasha Lee joined Olcese as first-team all-conference honorees, while Guajardo made the second team. The men’s program transitioned to the America Sky Confer-ence, which is consists of many of the Great West schools, and the Huskies finished third at the conference championship. Su-min Yu placed second overall to earn all-conference honors.During the 2008-09 season, Shuster led both programs in their first season of Great West Conference play. The men won the first-ever GWC championship and the women recorded a run-ner-up finish. Shuster also produced five Great West All-Conference honor-ees on the men’s side and four on the women’s side in the 2009-10 season. In addition to those, the women’s team produced two members of the NGCA All-American Scholar Team. A native of Fort Stockton, Shuster was an All-State golfer in high school before attending Temple Junior College on a golf scholarship. He finished his collegiate career at Angelo State University. Shuster comes to HBU after twenty-four years as a high school coach where he coached multiple sports. His teams have claimed State Championships in football and golf. His golf teams and players have won multiple district and re-gion championships as well as having numerous regional and state qualifiers. In his final year at Aledo in 2007, his boy’s team won the state title while the girls finished third in only their sec-

ond ever appearance at the state tournament. Those finishes landed him Coach of the Year honors from the NTGCAA. In addition to his coaching and teaching, Shuster also served as the vice president in a family corporation in Ft. Stockton. He also served as the Director of the Recreation Department for the City of Ft. Stockton, overseeing the operation of fifteen differ-ent sporting activities for several summers. Quite the golfer himself, Shuster hit his third-ever hole-in-one in December of 2007 with a 3-iron on a 213-yard hole.

Before returning to HBU in 2008, the Huskies’ made a name for themselves on the national stage with their men’s golf program, winning five Trans America Athletic Conference championships (1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989) and appearing at the NCAA Championships four times (1974, 1984, 1987, 1988). Former coach and di-rector of athletics Ed Billings took the Huskies to the college championships in 1974 before turning the reins over to Dave Mannen, the Huskies’ coach for the next 17 years. Mannen, one of the most successful coaches and recruiters in the Southwest, turned the Huskies into a perennial national power while winning an unprecedented eight conference coach of the year awards. He is the only coach to be honored in the HBU Sports Hall of Honor where he was inducted in 2009. Four of Mannen’s protégés won TAAC titles and earned conference player of the year honors: Ken Kelley (1982), Darryl Henning (1984), Colin Montgomerie (1985), and Paul Devenport (1988). He also had athletes selected all-conference 28 times and all-America seven times (Ken Kelley 1982; Darryl Henning 1985 & 1986; Colin Mont-gomerie 1986 & 1987; Jeff Wagner 1988; and Ulfar Jonsson 1988). Johnny Lewis and Robert Seligman were selected all-America in 1972 while competing for Coach Billings. The Huskies’ 1987 team rewrote the record books with a team that was possibly the strongest in school history. Anchored by Montgomerie, Glenn Joyner, Alex Espinosa and Jeff Wagner the team finished with an incredible 98-21 record and finished in 5th place at the NCAA Championships. Montgomerie’s stroke average was 72.19, edging out Wagner at 73.00. At that time, Montgomerie was the No. 1-ranked amateur in Great Britain and finished in the Top 20 eight times during the 1987 season. Wagner also finished in the Top 20 eight times while Joyner accomplished the feat seven times on the season. Over a dozen former HBU golfers enjoyed or still enjoy successful professional ca-reers, either as club pros or on the PGA or LPGA tours. The Huskies are building on their prestigious golf past as they look to the future.

WOMEN’S LETTERWINNERS

HBU golf was one of the most successful programs in the nation in the 1980s. Now the men and women who make up the team in the new century are beginning the trek back to NCAA prominence. Women’s golf at HBU enjoyed some bright moments in its history from 1973 until 1986 when the sport was dropped to make way for a team sport as mandated by NCAA Division I. The women’s program returned to HBU in 2007-08 and enjoyed a solid “in-augural” campaign and placed second in the Great West. The HBU women’s golf team has had two All-America selections in its history—Stephanie Farwig and Caroline Pierce. Farwig re-ceived the honor in 1981 while Pierce garnered the accolade in 1986. Both golfers have been successful on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour with Farwig being named the 1983 LPGA “Rookie of the Year.” Last season, Laci Humphrey continued the women’s tradition of national honors as she was named All-America Scholar by the National Golf Coaches Association.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETESWho is a prospective student-athlete?A “prospective student-athlete,” better know as a “recruit” or “prospect”, is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade, with the exception of men’s basketball which is a student who has started classes for the sev-enth grade. In addition, any younger student-athlete who receives any benefits from the institution would be considered a recruit.

Recruiting Only coaches and athletic department staff may be involved in the recruit-ing process. Athletics representatives are prohibited from contacting a pro-spective student-athlete or members of his/her family by telephone, letter, e-mail, or in person for the purpose of encouraging participation in athletics at Houston Baptist University. This prohibition remains in effect even after the prospect signs a National Letter of Intent (scholarship offer).NCAA Recruiting DefinitionsNCAA Recruiting Calendars

Visiting HBU An “official visit” is a visit paid in whole or in part by the university and cannot exceed 48 hours in length. A prospect can make a total of five official visits, with a limit of only one per university.Official Visit Checklist (link to .pdf file) An “unofficial visit” is a visit made at the prospect’s own expense. The university may provide (a) three complimentary tickets to an on-campus ath-letics event in which the university’s team is competing and (b) transportation to view off-campus practice and competition sites within a 30-mile radius. Prospects can make as many unofficial visits as they want.

National Letter of Intent The National Letter of Intent (NLI) is a binding agreement between a pro-spective student-athlete and an institution in which the institution agrees to provide a prospective student-athlete who is admitted to the institution and is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules athletics aid for one academic year in exchange for the prospect’s agreement to attend the institution for one ac-ademic year. All colleges and universities that participate in the NLI program agree to not recruit a prospective student-athlete once he/she signs an NLI with another college or university. Therefore, a prospective student-athlete who signs an NLI should no longer receive recruiting contacts and calls and is ensured an athletics scholarship for one academic year. The NLI must be accompanied by an institutional financial aid agreement. If the student-athlete does not enroll at that institution for a full academic year, he/she may be subject to specific penalties, including loss of a season of eligibility and a man-datory residence requirement.

Who is a “Representative of Athletic Interests?”A “representative of the institution’s athletics interests” or Booster can be an individual, independent agency, corporate entity or other organization

Dr. Robert B. Sloan Jr. is in his fourth year as President of Houston Baptist University, becoming the third president in the school’s history. He came to HBU from Baylor University, where he served as both Chan-cellor and President. HBU has seen tremendous growth in Sloan’s first three years as President. Enrollment has increased, building is happening all over cam-pus and the Huskies have moved back to NCAA Division I. This is all part of Sloan’s vision to make HBU one of the premier Christian institutions in the country. Born in Coleman, Sloan grew up in Abilene before attending Baylor and earning a bachelor of arts degree cum laude, graduating “With Dis-tinction.” In his freshman year, Sloan was a member of Baylor’s baseball team. He then earned a master of divinity degree magna cum laude from Princeton Theological Seminary before conducting postbaccalau-reate research in church history at the University of Bristol, England, and earned the Doktor der Theologie degree insigni cum laude from the University of Basel, Switzerland. Before returning to Baylor to join the faculty of the Department of Religion, he taught at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and adjunctively at Hardin-Simmons University. He was the first to hold the position of chair of the George W. Truett School of Evangelism at Bay-lor and became founding Dean of Truett Seminary in 1993. Two years later, Sloan was named President of Baylor University. Ten years later, in 2005, Sloan was named Chancellor. While holding a full-time academic position, Sloan served as interim pastor of more than 20 churches throughout Texas and Oklahoma. He has also authored two books, edited several and published more than 50 articles during his career. Sloan has held memberships in many professional societies and learned organizations. He has held numerous civic positions in the Waco area and has served on the board of Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, the American Association of Presidents of In-dependent Colleges and Universities, the Big 12 Athletic Conference Board of Directors, and the Group of 6 (six major athletic conferences). He was inducted into the Little League Hall of Excellence in 1996. Married to the former Sue Collier, the Sloans have seven children, a daughter-in-law and three sons-in-law: Charissa, Bryan and Amy, Eraina and Bryan, Michael, Alathea and Justin, Sophia and Mac, and Paul. In his new role, he will oversee the day-to-day operations of the athletic department while continuing to lead the department in its transition to NCAA Division I. He came to HBU in January of 2007 as the associate director of athletics, after 26 years across town at Rice University. In nearly two and a half years as the associate director of athletics, Moniaci has been with the Huskies from the beginning of the transition process. He was elevated to assistant athletic director in charge of operations in 1985, associate athletic di-rector in 1997 and rose to the position of senior associate athletic director in 2001, a position he held until 2006. Moniaci was the administrator at Rice directly responsible for vol-leyball, baseball, tennis, golf and women’s soccer. During his tenure with the Owls, he played an integral role in the success of the baseball team’s 11 conference championships and five College World Series appearances, including the 2003 NCAA National Championship. He was also the administrator responsible for academic advising, sports information, marketing and athletic fund-raising, concessions and facilities maintainence. Moniaci has extensive experience in over-seeing facilities renovations and construction. He oversaw renovations to historic Rice Stadium and to Rice Track to accommodate the addi-tion of women’s soccer. He also played an important role in the expan-sion of Rice’s Reckling Park. Moniaci graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a minor in mathematics from Ball State Uni-versity. He went on to attain his master’s degree in education with an emphasis in athletic administration from Ohio University. Moniaci and his wife, Cathy had two daughters, Alyssa (21) and An-drea (17).

Ron Cottrell is in his second year as associate director of athletics after serving 16 years as director of athletics for the Huskies. Cottrell worked very closely with HBU President Robert Sloan in leading HBU’s transition back to NCAA Division I. Under Cottrell’s leadership, HBU athletics became one of the pre-mier NAIA programs in the country, winning 42 conference champion-ships and competing in national tournaments 32 times.

Cottrell then led the Huskies back into NCAA Division I as a member of the Great West Conference, building on the successes of the past. In addition to the Huskies’ team success under Cottrell, HBU hasproduced 96 All-America and 62 Academic All-America honorees while maintaining a graduation rate above 90 percent. Cottrell was honored by his peers as the 2001 NAIA Region Athletics Director of the Year. Cottrell also has served Houston Baptist University as head men’s basketball coach for 18 years and led his last 10 NAIA teams to na-tional championship appearances. He recorded his 300th career vic-tory in 2004-05 and has been named Conference Coach of the Year five times. In 2002-03, Cottrell was chosen Basketball Times National Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to a 31-3 record and the nation’s top ranking. He also was chosen as a coach for USA Basketball in 2006, helping select the U18 team that won the gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship. A native of Arkansas, Cottrell attended Houston’s Westbury High School. After graduating from Westbury, Cottrell attended the Uni-versity of Arkansas, where he served as a volunteer coach for Nolan Richardson, his mentor, while earning his degree in industrial engineer-ing. He also served as sports director for Fayetteville, Ark., ABC affiliate KTVP-TV. Cottrell then spent a year as an assistant coach at North Dakota State College of Science before returning to Arkansas and join-ing Richardson’s staff as an assistant coach. During Cottrell’s years as an assistant at Arkansas, the Razorbacks won two Southwest Confer-ence championships and went to the NCAA tournament three times, culminating with the Hogs’ appearance at the 1990 NCAA Final Four. Cottrell is married to the former Jacque George, director of media relations for the Great West Conference, and they have two daughters: Scottlyn Rose (15) and Sydney-Anne (13). He also serves as a deacon at Sugar Land Baptist Church.

Dr. John Yarrington, director of the school of music, is in his eighth year as faculty athletics representative for the Huskies and serves as HBU’s representative to the NCAA. Yarrington, who also serves HBU as director of choral studies and a professor of music, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oklahoma. He completed the master of sacred music degree at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City and contin-ued his graduate studies back at the University of Oklahoma, complet-ing a doctor of musical arts degree. He is an active contributor to professional journals and his writings on choral techniques, organization and philosophy of church music are well known. His choirs at HBU have distinguished themselves for their artistry and range of literature. Yarrington is active in the American Choral Directors Association and served as Southwest Divisional President. He has been featuredconductor for numerous honor choruses and all-state events with his workshop schedule taking him throughout the United States and Canada.
