Q: you have taken great pride in building the program here, so what does it mean now to put on a Fairmont state jersey?

a: The number one goal as a program that we have for our players is that they have a sense of pride when they put on that uniform. With that pride goes responsibility, and that they take those concepts of pride and responsibility with them after they are done playing here so that playing women’s basketball at Fairmont State means something. It’s important for them to leave a legacy for the next group of players after them.

Season previewQ&a with Steve McDonald

Q: how are the players adjusting to the loss of senior ashley Vavrek’s timely scoring and finding their own roles for the upcoming season?

a: Every team, every year has to find its own identity. They have to find what they do well and get better and better at it. Right now I think we are developing that in terms of defense, but offensively I think that we are still searching. That’s going to happen when you have four a young team like we do. It’s going to take a while. This is definitely going to be a basketball team that is better in January and February than we are

in November and December. What we need to have happen is we need our defense to carry us through November and December.

Q: you are in the second year of a different offensive system, so how have the players and coaches grown with having a year of that under their belts?

a: The biggest difference between last year and this year, in terms of offense, is that I think as coaches we are more familiar with what we want out of it, so I think we are doing a better job of teaching it. We are progressing at a good pace, but we still have five freshmen that are trying to figure this thing out. There is a learning curve. At the same time, it’s been a much easier transition this year in terms of how everyone views the offense and where you can score out of it.

Q: how did kaitlin snyder progress from the start of the year to the end of the year last year, and then from the end of last year to this year?

a: Like most freshmen, Kaitlin was tentative in the sense that she just wasn’t sure how she fit in the offense. I thought as the year went on she became more comfortable and her abilities came out and was able to play at the level she’s capable of, which is very high. This year, she’s picked up where she left off last year, but she still is learning what her role is with this team, which I think is much more of a scorer for us.

Q: rachel Murray is obviously a huge defensive presence. is one of the challenges this year to make her more consistently offensively?

a: Rachel’s biggest challenge is to come and play every day; to come out and go to work every day in practice and in a game and not let her move away mentally at given moments. When she is focused, she is an excellent defensive player and she can score.

Q: What are lauren Gilbert’s biggest strengths to the team and what is the biggest key for her success this year?

a: Lauren has worked extremely over the summer but has been set back with an Achilles injury in the preseason. I think she’s made the transition from junior year to senior year, and out of basketball for a year and a half before that. I’m not worried about her mental approach, we just need to get her healthy and on the court.

Q: has bringing in a core of players from one school (north Marion) affected the dynamic of the team in any way?

a: I think it has had only positive effects. They are four really wonderful kids, and they get along extremely well with each other and the rest of the team. I think one of our biggest strengths right now is team chemistry – the girls genuinely like each other. There is no North Marion separation when we are practicing or at meals. They’re just good kids who want to see each other succeed.

There’s no amazing camaraderie out on the floor with them right now. It will probably help us over time more than it will when most of them are trying to adjust to college basketball ball.

Q: as the team continues to find its identity offensively, how important is it for the defense to be consistent on a nightly basis?

a: Much like in football, the defense is always going to be ahead of the offense. It’s kind of like that for us right now. We’re trying to figure out who

is going to score, how they’re going to score and where they’re going to score from, so we have to be consistent defensively. We spoke about that with our players yesterday in practice. You can’t get better in any aspect of basketball unless you know what that “getting better” should look like. Right now we’re not 100 percent sure, even defensively, what that should be like but I think that’s because we’re young.

Q: is this year’s team an unknown quantity?

a: I know what this year’s team should look like, right now I’m not going to be able to lay odds of whether it will end up that way. We are very inexperienced in addition to being young because our three seniors are only in their second year of the program, so we don’t have a single player out there on the floor that has been in our program for more than one year on the floor. As a coaching staff, we have an end goal and we are constantly moving towards that end goal. We feel like we have the type of players that can play the style that we want to play.

Q: do you see any carryover and hunger from the returning players to win another WViaC tournament and get back to the nCaa tournament?

a: If you have a sophomore or junior dominated team that has made it, then I think you can talk about the hunger to get back. We graduated a number of kids, we’re very young, I think they’re more worried about what entre is going to be served tonight at dinner than getting back to the NCAA Tournament. I think it’s our job as coaches to bring them along to the point where they understand that the basketball purpose of the program is to get to the NCAA Tournament. We’re not talking about that right now, though. We’re talking about today’s practice and trying to get a little bit better.

Q: as a group, what does the group of newcomers bring to this year’s squad?

a: The new group is quick, they play well together and they can shoot; but they’re still learning college basketball and the speed of the game. We think we can win every game on our schedule, but we think we can lose every game on our schedule, and that’s the nature of college basketball. In high school you can look at 12-15 games and if you have a good team, you’re going to be OK, so you have four or five games where you have to play at a different level. It’s a different situation now. We are trying to communicate to them that we need to get a consistent level of effort and enthusiasm because we think we have enough talent to win, but we have to be consistent in our behaviors. lauren gilbert

As Fairmont State’s women’s bas-ketball program continues to reach new heights, head coach Steve Mc-Donald has continued to recognize and celebrate the student-athletes who dedicated themselves to the sport. As part of that celebration, McDonald is hosting the third an-nual Alumni Weekend on Jan. 7-8, which focuses on welcoming back former players and enjoying fellow-ship among themselves as well as with the current squad.

The first two editions of the Alumni Weekend have been a huge success in bringing back players who had not been on campus in years and re-connecting them with the school and the women’s basket-ball program. McDonald has tried to stress that the program’s current success is rooted in the solid foun-dation set by the players from the past. In addition, many fans have come out to the game to see for-mer stars lace it up once again on the hardwood.

Fairmont State Hosts Third annual alumni Weekend

“By creating the Alumni Week-end and having that alumni game which so many people enjoy, we’ve connected the present to the past,” McDonald says. “The success we’ve enjoyed recently can now be en-joyed by players who have helped set that foundation. It’s a great op-portunity for our current players to meet former players and build

relationships, which is why we coach and they should play.

“We were so pleased with the turnout from last two

years,” McDonald continued. “It was also a real treat for our fans as they came out to see so many popular names from the past.”

“It’s an outstanding event,” said Donna Hopkins, Fairmont State Class of 1983. “It was great to see my old teammates and see some of the younger players and the suc-cess that this program have had.”

“It was a lot of fun,” said Vicki Huffman, Class of 1984. “It was re-ally good to get to know some of the new players but also good to see some old friends.”

As part of the festivities, wom-en’s basketball alumni will receive a complete gift bag. Alumni will then divide into two teams and square off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, prior to Fairmont State’s confer-ence doubleheader against Con-cord starting at 2 p.m. All women’s basketball alumni in attendance will be recognized at the FSU-Con-cord game.

Steve McDonald atFairmont State

entering his 11th season, Steve McDonald has known nothing but success as head coach at fairmont State. He has led the falcons to 20 or more wins in six of the last eight years and directed fairmont State to its first-ever nCaa tournament in 2005, and then once again in 2008 and 2010. McDonald has also helped deliver two of the three wviaC tournament championships won by fairmont State capturing the crowns in 2008 and 2010.

in his 10 seasons on the sideline, McDonald has compiled a record of 203-93, a winning percentage of nearly 70 percent. the 203 wins are already the second-most in school history. Of the top-five winningest seasons in fairmont State women’s basketball history, McDonald has been at the helm for four of those seasons, including a program-best 28 wins in 2005.

His players have earned first team all-wviaC honors 10 times, second team honors seven times and all-freshman recognition six times. He also coached the only nCaa Division ii all-americans in the program’s history, 2005 wviaC Player of the year and fairmont State’s all-time leading scorer, Kristen Gattuso, and fairmont native ashley reed in 2006.

in addition to directing the success on the court, McDonald has also enhanced the program in different ways. He helped fundraise to renovate the women’s basketball locker room to make it first-class, complete with hand-crafted wooden lockers and a flat-panel television. He has also helped celebrate fairmont State’s tradition in women’s basketball with banners and plaques commemorating some of the great players and teams in school history that adorn the hallway as the players take the floor. in that same vein, he has connected with former players with the alumni Classic played in

established a new school record for blocks, was a wviaC honorable mention selection.

two seasons ago, McDonald led the falcons to a record of 18-11 and the second round of the wviaC tournament. vavrek was a first team all-wviaC selection and Gabby Gattuso earned second team recognition.

in the 2007-08 season, the falcons wrapped up the regular season with a record of 21-6 before starting the wviaC tournament. after a win over Davis & elkins at home in the tourney, fSU knocked off wv State in Charleston. the falcons then advanced to the tournament final with a 67-62 win over rival Glenville State before avenging a loss earlier in the season to wv wesleyan to win the program’s first championship since 1984. the win secured the second-ever nCaa tournament appearance, both of which came under McDonald. fSU finished the season with a mark of 25-7, and the 25 wins were the second-most in a single season at

January, inviting back all those who wore the Maroon and white to come and take to the court once again and be a part of a myriad of activities.

last season, the falcons finished the season in strong fashion winning six of its final eight games, which included an incredible run through the wviaC tournament. the falcons trailed by 18 points in the second half in their first round game against wv State, but stormed back to claim the victory. that propelled fSU to wins over Charleston and Shepherd before the falcons defeated rival west liberty, 85-78, in overtime in the finals. the win secured a third nCaa tournament trip -- all under McDonald -- for the women’s basketball program. fairmont State finished the season with a 22-10 record.

ashley vavrek closed her stellar career with wviaC tournament MvP honors, first team all-wviaC recognition and second team all-region accolades. rachel Murray, who

best seasons in school history in 2004-05, leading the falcons to a 28-4 overall record and a conference mark of 17-1. the squad won the wviaC Championship for the first time since 1972 and advanced to the nCaa east region Playoffs for the first time in school history, losing in the semi-finals to anderson College.

Prior to taking the head coaching position for the women’s program, McDonald spent seven seasons as an assistant for the men’s team helping the team to five seasons of at least 20 wins and a national ranking in five of those seasons. in 1997-98, fairmont State made its deepest run in the national tournament since moving to Division ii by advancing to the “elite eight.”

“Coach Mac” began his coaching career in 1980 at Ganado High School in texas. He was named Coach of the year in 1981 when Ganado posted a 27-7 record. He received the same honor in 1984, guiding Strake Jesuit Prep to a 23-7 record and the state finals. His six-year high school record was 109-66.

in 1986-87, Coach McDonald served as a graduate assistant at Sam Houston State University in texas. the Bearcats finished 16-12 in their first year of Division i competition. He then returned home to his native west virginia as an assistant coach from 1987-89 at west virginia wesleyan College. the Bobcats were 40-17 during those two seasons. in 1989, McDonald was named the head coach at wesleyan, posting a 55-35 record over the next three seasons. He was named the wviaC Coach of the year in 1990-91, leading the Bobcats to a 23-9 record and a west virginia Conference championship. Before his appointment at fairmont State, he coached the Basket flyers of vienna, austria.

McDonald is a 1976 graduate of Hampshire High School in romney, w.va. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from west virginia University in 1980, graduating magna cum laude in secondary education. He earned his master’s degree from west virginia wesleyan College in 1989, and he is currently working towards his doctorate in curriculum and instruction at west virginia University.

McDonald is married to the former Melissa lazzari of Monongahela, Pa. they are the parents of daughter, Madison, and son, Mason.

as a Marion County native and a fairmont State graduate, no one embodies the passion of falcon athletics like rusty elliott. elliott, who has been associated with fairmont State for nearly three decades, was named athletic director in august of 2007.

last season, three fairmont State teams ad-vanced to nCaa Championships in historic fashion. the men’s and women’s basketball teams made it to the nCaa tournament in the same year for the first time in school history, and the softball team earned its first-ever nCaa tournament bid. in ad-dition to the on-field accomplishments, the nCaa released its graduation rate in January 2010 and fairmont State’s student-athletes boasted the top graduation rate of any school in the state of west virginia. in the Spring of 2010, the fSU athletic department was recognized as the wviaC win-ner in the nCaa Division ii’s Community engage-ment initiative for its efforts in the football season opener against Clarion that saw over 5,000 people make their way to Duvall-rosier field.

in 2008, elliott oversaw an athletic department that saw fairmont State finish third in the wviaC President’s Cup. the men’s golf team once again captured a wviaC title and advanced to the nCaa Championships, the men’s basketball team record-ed 20 wins, the softball team set a school record for conference victories and finished runner-up in the league and the baseball team captured the wviaC Central Division championship. in addition to the athletic successes, fairmont State student-athletes had unprecedented success in the classroom as the cumulative GPa for all student-athletes was 2.99. He also oversaw major improvements to the basketball arena with the installation of a state-of-the-art scoreboard and renovations to the feaster Center as fairmont State continues its commit-ment to a superior student-athlete experience.

in his first year as athletic director, fairmont State won a pair of conference championships in women’s basketball and men’s golf, with each of those teams advancing to the nCaa tournament. the football team, playing its first season on a brand-new playing surface, finished with a win-ning record and the men’s basketball team finished with 19 victories.

athletic Directorelliott guided the football program for five years

before accepting the athletic director’s position. in his last season as head football coach he landed six players on the all-wviaC first team – tied for most in the league. the falcons closed the season strong down the stretch, winning three of their last four. in his five seasons, elliott’s players earned first team all-conference honors 29 times.

elliott spent 15 seasons as an assistant coach for the falcons from 1986-2000, spanning the tenures of wally Hood and Doug Sams. in his first two seasons, he served as the wide receivers coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 1988. that season, the falcons were the west vir-ginia intercollegiate athletic Conference (wviaC) champions and advanced to the national associa-tion of intercollegiate athletics (naia) playoffs. He remained offensive coordinator for the next four seasons.

from 1994-2000, elliott coordinated the fal-cons’ defensive and recruiting efforts under Sams. the falcons won two wviaC championships (1996 and 2000) during those seven years. the falcons were conference runners-up in 1986, 1987 and 2005.

elliott served as the skill development coach for rich rodriguez at west virginia University during the 2001 football season before taking over the helm of the fairmont State program in the spring of 2002.

“this is home and this is definitely the place i want to be,” elliott says. “i want to be part of the development of this school, this community and this county. that’s a big part of my life, and i want to make this athletic program and this school a re-ally positive thing for the community.”

elliott also served as a temporary instructor in the School of Health and Human Performance and had done so for 11 years at fairmont State. elliott received his bachelor’s degree from fairmont State in 1979 and obtained his master’s degree from wvU in 1988.

He taught and was an assistant football coach at north Marion High School from 1980 until 1985. He served under head coach roy Michael at north Marion. the Huskies posted a 57-13 re-cord and won the state championship in 1980 and 1981. north Marion finished as the state runner-up in 1982. from 1981-86, elliott was the head wrestling coach at north Marion. His teams posted a record of 73-26 and won five state champion-ships.

Conference (wviaC) rates as one of the oldest leagues at the small-college level. the 16-member conference currently boasts the largest membership of any nCaa Division ii league.

the current membership includes alderson- Bro-addus College, Bluefield State College, University of Charleston, Concord University, Davis & elkins College, fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Ohio valley University, Shepherd University, west liberty State College, west virginia State University, west vir-ginia wesleyan College and wheeling Jesuit University. the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Seton Hill University joined the wviaC for the 2006-07 sea-son. Pitt Johnstown and Seton Hill are the wviaC’s first out-of-state members since 1932.

the wviaC moved into the nCaa Division ii ranks in 1994 after a long affiliation with the naia. the con-ference was the only one in Division ii to place a team in the national quarterfinals in men’s basketball, foot-ball and baseball during the 1998-99 academic year. in 2002 the wviaC, along with two other conferences, became the first league to earn four bids to the nCaa Division ii Men’s Basketball Championship.

Commissioner Barry Blizzard, who has held the post since 1987, led the move into the nCaa. Blizzard, a native of Bramwell, west virginia, previously served as the athletics director at Bluefield State. the long-time conference chief has served in a variety of national leadership positions, including a stint as president of the Division ii Conference Commissioners’ associa-tion. He is currently the chairman of the nCaa Division ii nominating Committee.

alumni of conference members include west vir-ginia State’s earl lloyd (the first african-american to play in the national Basketball association), Salem in-ternational’s Cecil Underwood (two-term west virginia governor) and wheeling Jesuit’s John Beilein (current Michigan men’s basketball coach).

the conference’s basketball tournament is one of the longest-running events in collegiate hoops; the 70th annual event was held earlier this year at the Charleston Civic Center. attendance at the wviaC tournament ranks among the highest in Divi-sion ii. the conference also boasts a 10-station radio network for the tournament.

women’s sports were incorporated into the wviaC during the 1981-82 academic year as the west virginia intercollegiate athletic association was absorbed. Cur-rently, women’s championships are offered in softball, golf, tennis, track, basketball, volleyball, cross country and soccer.

Men’s championships are conducted in football, cross country, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis and track.

the league was recognized by the State Journal as one of “55 Great things about west virginia” in the magazine’s april edition. the wviaC is headquartered in Princeton, w.va.

the outstanding efforts of a certified athletic trainer employed in a collegiate setting at a Division ii school. the nata selected Cable on the merits of his active community and campus involvement; vol-unteer service; national, district and state athletic training participation; promotion of the profession; and exceptional performance in the role of colle-giate athletic trainer.

Cable is a member of the nata District 3 Board of Directors. He has served the west virginia ath-letic trainers association (wvata) in numerous ca-pacities throughout his career, and is currently the president of that group. One of his top priorities as president of the wvata is licensure for all certified athletic trainers in west virginia. further, Cable is in his second term as president of the west virginia in-tercollegiate athletic Conference (wviaC) athletic trainers Committee.

in 2007, he was named the wvata “trainer of the year” for his willingness to go “above and be-yond the normal call of duty.”

Prior to coming to fairmont State, Cable was the head athletic trainer, head women’s softball coach and assistant women’s basketball coach at west virginia wesleyan College. His softball team made the school’s first trip to the naia national Softball Championship tournament in his final season.

Cable also spent time as a clinical athletic train-er at Medbrook Sports Medicine Clinic and adjunct professor of health and physical education at Salem international University. He also worked as an ath-letic training intern with the Baltimore Colts early in his career.

in addition to his athletic training duties, he also teaches in the Health and Human Performance De-partment.

Cable has been instrumental in expanding the training facility to over 1,300 square feet that was completed in the spring of 2008. the new training room is four times the size of the previous location and features include four small treatment tables, six large treatment tables and increased unobstructed floor space.

Cable is married to the former Jill Hinkle and they are the parents of two children, Courtney and Johnathan.

She is involved in all facets of planning and imple-mentation of athletic department initiatives, includ-ing season tickets and parking; facility use and scheduling; and office maintenaince. the fairmont State alumna began working at fairmont State in 1994 in the office of the registrar. “We look at our camp as an opportunity to affect young people in a positive way. We want every camper to learn to help and respect other people. We spend a lot of time talking about life as well as learning the fundamentals of basketball. We don’t play a lot of five-on-five. What we do is we teach individually and through two-on-two, three-on-three and sometimes four-on-four situations.”

“the concept of having fun when you play the game of basketball along with learning fundamentals, i think, is the cornerstone of enjoying the game of basketball.”

“the game of basketball for women is improving every year, and i think the reason for that is that more and more kids are going to camps and applying the things that they’ve learned during the summer into the school year.”
