2011 PREVIEWSEASON OUTLOOK

The 2011 golf season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in school history. Head coaches MerriLyn Gibbs and Pete Coughlin believe they have their most talented teams since they have held the reigns of the programs

at California University of Pennsylvania. The women’s team is coming off a third-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title which it captured this fall, while the men are looking to rebound from a disappointing sixth-place finish at the conference championship. Gibbs is entering the spring season with a young, but experienced squad. With only one senior in Jenna Rothermel and one junior in Dianne Luke, the Vulcans have five sophomores and one freshman that will all be competing for a spot on the travel squad. Rothermel and Luke have been vital pieces to the success of the Vulcan program over the last few years and there is no reason not to think that it won’t continue in 2011. Kim Thomas and Maria Lopez return for their sophomore season with hopes of improving from their freshman campaign and fall seasons. Lopez played in the number one spot all last year and had a great finish at regionals last season, while Thomas has consistently shown improvement throughout her career. Gibbs believes her [Thomas] level of talent makes her extremely exciting to watch and that she will only continue to improve. Even though the Vulcans added another PSAC Championship to their growing list of recent accolades, Gibbs believes that there is more to be accomplished from this team. Since all eight players on the roster have the ability to have great performances on any given day, she feels the competition between them during practices will only elevate their level of play and the develop the consistency is takes to advance through the National Championships. The men’s team is looking to capitalize this spring on a tremendous off-season. After dedicating themselves in the weight room, in the indoor facility and taking steps to master the mental aspect of the game, Coughlin believes his team is focused and prepared to have a successful season. Junior Paul Babashanian, a two-time All-PSAC performer, is looking to lead the Vulcans back to a fourth-straight NCAA regional

appearance. With no seniors on the roster, Cal U will also have to depend on its youth and talent. Coughlin has high expectations of sophomore Justin Newbauer, redshirt freshman Chris Tull and true freshman Nick Erlichman. Newbauer recorded the second-best scoring average in the fall season, Erlichman had a stellar high school career by finishing second in the Massachusetts state tournament as a senior and Coughlin believes Tull has the natural talent to become one of the best players in school history as long as continues to dedicate himself to the game. Entering the spring season, the Vulcans have high expectations when it comes to the

NCAA Championship. The women’s team enters the spring ranked fourth in the region, while the men’s team is ranked 10th. As the spring progresses both coaches hope to improve their standing heading into the NCAA Tournament. One advantage the women’s program has is that it will be hosting the NCAA Regional Championship on its home course at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon. Gibbs is confident that the difficulty this course presents can be used to the Vulcans’ advantage knowing the terrain and dealing with the hills throughout the course that many

programs do not experience regularly throughout their season.

Coughlin guided W&J to a combined four Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) championships behind four medalist golfers and seven all-conference golfers. In 2006, he was selected as the Eaton Golf Pride Division III Mid-Atlantic Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the Presidents to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III National Championships. Among the PAC medalists was Michael Grasso, who became the first golfer in W&J history to be named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) PING Division III All-America Team. Coughlin also coached Grasso to two-straight NCAA Division III Tournaments. Prior to his tenure at W&J, the Berwick, Pa., native served as the golf services assistant at the Heron Creek Golf Club in North Port, Fla. During his time at Heron Creek, he represented the club in various PGA professional tour events, including the 2003 Canadian Tour Winter Qualifying School. A 1999 graduate of Maryland with a degree in marketing, Coughlin became the assistant golf professional at the University of Maryland Golf Course for two years. Among his duties at the course were planning and organizing tournament for the Terps, instructing students on techniques to improve their game and scheduling and marketing the course’s junior program, which included summer camps.

Peter Coughlin enters his fourth season as head coach of the California University of Pennsylvania men’s golf team in 2011 season after joining the program in spring of 2008. Coughlin directed the Vulcans to a second-place finish at the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships behind a pair of individual top-five finishes. Prior to league championships, Cal U claimed its first invitational title under Coughlin at a 17-team tournament. The Vulcans also finished 10th at the NCAA Regional Championships last season after finishing 16th in the team standings the previous year. In his first full season with the program in 2008-09, Coughlin guided the Vulcans to a third-place finish at the PSAC Championships and an appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament. A graduate of Maryland, Coughlin came to Cal U after leading nearby Washington &

Jefferson, a Division III program, to its most success years in program history. While with the Presidents, he served as both the head men’s & women’s golf coach for four-plus years.

ACADEMICS2009-10 REVIEW

Cal U student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2009-10 season, five PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and two NCAA regional trophies with nine team and 14 individual appearances in NCAA post-season play. The success continued as Cal U finished second in the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 205 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-straight semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Cal U also featured 16 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections highlighted by four Academic All-Americans. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophomore athletics and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports were named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. To be eligible for the academic honor, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport. Cal U ranked sixth among the 16-member conference with 141 scholar-athletes. The golf teams combined for nine players earning PSAC Scholar-Athlete status.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team

and 238 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division

II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate, assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan women’s tennis. I am confident that Coaches Peter Coughlin and MerriLyn Gibbs, their staff and players will continue to build upon the tennis tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive

No. 2 national ranking in the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place-finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 Cal U student athletes, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport

and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as the PGM Indoor Golf Facility. Golf and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010-11 season and that you will support all of these young athletes

enthusiastically.
