Surfing - a day trip 11th July Meet at Market Yard: 8am Organiser: Tim Cottle Cost £13

When there’s no water in the rivers, you can always count on the sea! Certainly beats driving to the Try-weryn to paddle on a dam release river doesn’t it? But if there are no waves ....

Let’s just pray for waves on July 11th, shall we?

You need to bring a packed lunch, your canoeing things, or collect them from Market Yard on the morning.

Don’t forget to sign up on the sheet in the Clubhouse so we know you want to come and can plan the transport.

River Avon 8th August Meet 9.30am Clubhouse Cost £3

This is a river trip with a difference. We base ourselves at Bradford on Avon and we paddle downstream to the weir in the morning where we shoot it if we are feeling brave and water levels are right.

Then we paddle back to the car park where our packed lunches are waiting for us.

We picnic on the grassy banks of the Avon and when everyone is ready we get back on the water and paddle upstream to another weir which we shoot with impunity.

Then on the way back we try our hardest to sink all the instructors be-fore they sink us.

In case you haven’t already worked it out, it’s a

fun and games river trip Bring with you a packed lunch and your change of clothes for canoeing, You can pick up all the canoeing kit that you need when we meet at the clubhouse in the morning.

BBQ and Try-a-Boat Day 29th August At Langham Farm, Rode 11am-5pm We set up the big marquee and cook over two enormous barbeques so that we can dine in style, what-ever the weather.

People bring along their various different boats and let others try them out.

We will also, for this year only, enjoy the additional pleasure of a ceremo-nial burning (not literally) of two C2 boats. You may well ask why? See P17 for explanations!

COST £3.50 youth £5.50 adults

It is important that you sign up on the sheet in the clubhouse or let Pam know by email if you would like to come so that we can cater for you.

A great family day

Calendar in detail - Surfing weekend

Suring Weekend 14th /15th August

A self catering, camping and surfing weekend.

It’s time to catch some surf! Yes it’s that

time of year again when we head down to camp at Dinham Farm in Cornwall to catch some surf on anything which floats. Last year was very successful with surfers heading out to the waves very early to beat the crowds. This left the rest of the day to spend with the family on the beach or whatever you want. It’s good safe white water practice for both new and experienced. To partake you will need camping equipment because it’s self catering. If you’re under 18 bring your parents and if you’re over bring them anyway. Also bring your chosen surf craft and gear - you can borrow club kit if you need to but be sure to either email Carl (see below) or write it on the list when you sign up.

Costs Transport: variable. (£20-£25) Food: variable (it’s DIY time - you sort it out for yourself!) Camp charges :

2 Adults (tent/caravan) £16 Child (2 – 12 years £4 Child (13+ years) £8 Dogs £1

Dinham Farm Caravan Park at www.dinhamfarm.co.uk

Meet: Arrangements are variable - most people make their own way there on Fri-day. Pair up to share costs! Any questions please email Carl at [email protected]

Pray for waves!

Reports - Local trip

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

Local Trip on Sunday, 27th June

By John Kent

What a great trip! The sun was shining and the water was warm.

This time we got on at Weston Lock on the River Avon in Bath and that was the hardest part of the trip.

We had over a metre to drop down to our boats from the jetty. Some just seal launched. However, with the help of the open boats we all managed it without a swim. We set off in the di-rection of Saltford.

Along the way yet another football was found with which to play tag, we avoided (docile for a change) swans, and the odd rowing shell. As usual James B seemed to spend a lot of time in the water but alas no points James, it was self-inflicted.

Eventually we reached Saltford weir. Not much water flowing over it today but just enough to make the near vertical drop (for kayaks any-way). This is where we gained the only copper nose clip points of the day. Jonathan, next time you shoot a weir you must wear a spray deck or you will fill up again.

By this time people were getting hun-gry so we stopped at the Shallows

where we had parked the cars, for a quick bite to eat.

We continued to the second weir downstream of Saltford. This one was sloping but also had a shoot between two concrete walls. A short drop, then a wave, and a stopper at the bottom. Everyone made this, even the open boats.

After several goes we called it a day and paddled back to the Shal-lows, a total distance of around four and a half miles.

Paddlers and points: John Kent, James Munn, Karl and Jonathan Waldeck (2), James and Josh Han-nan, James Bennett, Mandy James, Stephanie Parker Smith, Richard and Matt Norman, Amanda Reeves, Josie and Jasmine Shilla-beer, and the Bloodworths - Pete, Troodie, Dennis, Alex, Charlie, Kia and Sophie.

Ed: The River Avon is indeed a lovely river. We visit it again at the beginning of August when we have a gentle trip playing on the weirs in the centre of Bradford on Avon. Keep 8th August free in your diary.

Here is a copy of Andy A’s Press Release

Canoeists enjoy competition on River Frome Frome Canoe Club welcomed fel-low paddlers from all over the South and Wales, who came to compete in a national slalom at Langham Farm on the River Frome near Rode over the weekend of 19th and 20th June. Competitors came from as far away as London and mid Wales for the event, and competed in glori-ous sunshine over two days, many camping overnight on the site. Local paddlers from Frome Canoe Club were well represent-ed: the senior Danny O'Gorman and junior Jack Hobbs taking first and second places respectively in the top division 3 Mens Kayak event on Sunday. Said the event organiser and Club Chairman Andy Bell, "The event was a huge success and I was re-ally happy to see so many smiling faces. The club owes particular thanks to the local farmer for the use of the site, and to the owner of the hydro plant at Tellisford for the help in creating exciting water levels for the competitors." Canoe Slalom is an Olympic sport, and is a test of paddlers’ skills as they try to negotiate a set course through sets of poles while de-scending rapids and

waves. Course designer Andy Avery said "Slalom is great fun, but also a real challenge. We make sure the course is well suit-ed to those taking part, but by no means easy. Olympic champions like Campbell Walsh (silver medal Athens 2008) and David Florence (silver medal Beijing 2008) all started out at events just like this one. It’s exciting to think we may have seen a future Olympic champion, take some of their first paddle strokes this weekend right here in Frome" Frome Canoe Club welcomes all, and organises trips and events for all abilities throughout the year. Sport England Grant - success

Andy Avery gains massive grant for the club

Surfing the net on a slack day at work, Andy discovered that Wadebridge gained £10 grand from Sport England (SE) and there was money to be had for the asking. I guess we all know what went through his mind? . . . . “Umm more slalom boats....””

So he wrote up a bid and sent it off. Bingo! It worked.

The thrust of the bid: ‘to increase par-ticipation in the discipline of slalom at the club through provision of new boats which will make the discipline more accessible for members, existing and new.’

The deal was for us to provide a pro-gramme of training and events, and SE would give us the money to buy boats in a variety of sizes to cater for young people aged 11-18. But Andy also cunningly asked for some bigger white water boats to expand the white water slalom provision.

So, our part of the deal is to organise: A programme of 5 slalom training

courses (3 down, 2 to go)

A series of mini slaloms (already

underway—1 down, 2 to go) A second ranked slalom (planned for

18th July) Other training days through the

winter (to be planned)

Our contribution is to be: Coaching hours.

What we get from SE: 2x C2, 2x C1, 7x kayak 3 white water boats (we want G3s) 14x spray decks

Targets—we do have some to meet but that’s OK!

ARE WE HAPPY WITH THAT OR WHAT?

Thank you Andy

And so this is why we can dispose of the C2s and C1!

Information about Leptospirosis

All about Leptospirosis / Weils Disease Leptospirosis is an infection that can affect people who come into contact with water where rats live. It can cause a disease called Weil's disease, which feels a little like flu with a persistent and severe headache to start with. It is far more serious than flu and it is important that you tell your doctor if you’re feeling unwell after kayaking/canoeing. As canoeists and kayakers we are all at risk of suffering from this infection, but following some basic rules can reduce the likelihood of getting it. Cover all cuts and broken skin with waterproof plasters. It can be a bit tricky to keep the plasters on, but your instructor will have some ideas for keeping cuts cov-ered. Wash your hands after paddling and always before eating or drinking. Better still, have a bath or shower after paddling.

Remember that live on the rivers that we like to pad-dle.

Always after pad- dling and definitely wash

hands before

This article is not to alarm you - it is to give you information. Last year

the committee decided that we would inform members of the possible

risks via the Newsletter. Please be reassured that are not telling you

about Leptospirosis because we have any more concern than normal, at

the moment - the last case in the club was about 10 years ago.

Have fun paddling, be aware of the risks and

ENJOY YOUR SPORT.

Arthur - seen every Wednesday, taking

the Adult group. Arthur is one of the club’s senior coaches (BCU Level 3).

What do you like about Frome Canoe Club? The people, we have a great mix of ages and backgrounds and everyone is there to do one thing: have fun on the water. Every-one supports each other regardless of their ability.

Which river would you describe as your most favourite? The Middle Tavy from Hill Bridge to Harford Bridge. It needs the water levels to be spot on and when it is, it is the most fantastic rollercoaster ride all the way. Anything above the optimum level gets a bit hairy and the Tavy demands respect.

What is the happiest moment you have had on the water? Being able to roll in a stopper and get out of it intact!

What is your most embarrassing moment on the water? Assisting Neil and Steve Paice on the 4 star River Leader training and getting sucked back into Chapel Falls stopper and swimming! Still it gave the guys training some good rescue practice!

Tell us about the boats you have owned. I’ve only had two boats a Dagger Crossfire which now belongs to the club and my trusty Wavesport X. I also use my son’s Wavesport EZ which I nearly had to replace when I lost it for a couple of days on the Tavy. The nose on the EZ has a dent in it where Andy Bell headbutted it! The X is getting a bit battered now and I think it is time to replace it, so any donations will be gratefully received.

Your favourite piece of kit? I’ve got two: my Werner paddles which are al-most indestructible and my palmless mitts which keep my hands nice and toasty in the winter.

Tell us some of the highlights in your paddling career. I started paddling in

my teens in the Scouts before plastic boats were even thought of. I remem-ber we did a three day expedition up the Thames in big canvas canoes which took two people to lift. We really annoyed the boat owners on the Thames when we surfed their stern waves, so much so that they took to throwing beer cans at us (not full unfortunately).

We learned to make fibre glass boats one year but when we made our own we used up all of the material for four boats on two so they were a bit heavy. I destroyed one of them when I got sucked down a siphon through a sluice gate the following winter when the river where we paddled was in spate. I obviously (luckily) got through ok despite my friend’s best attempts to rip my hair out to stop me going under (now you know why I have no hair). The boat came through 30 min later in pieces. We hung it on the wall in memory of the incident and the boat’s durability. If it hadn’t had so much fibreglass in it would probably have bent up with me in it.

My first white water experience was at Symonds Yat with Salisbury Canoe Club and it was in spate we had a brilliant time and spent a lot of time rescu-ing army cadets who ignored advice not to hold on to the trees and ended up in them without a boat.

After a twenty year break I discovered Frome Canoe Club and have pro-gressed in my paddling since to get my Level 3 Kayak Coach award and I am still learning. During my time with FCC I have been involved in securing the funding and commissioning the new clubhouse in various roles on the com-mittee. The opening of the new clubhouse was a dream come true that at some stages looked as if it was never going to happen. I do not miss the old portacabins or the dark and dingy Cheese and Grain back room one bit!

My sporting hero is Sir Steve Redgrave. His sporting achievements are incred-ible even more so when you consider that he also had to contend with the onset of diabetes prior to his last Olympic medal. He is an inspiration to many showing what is possible if you have the determination to do it and the support of friends and fellow athletes.

Have you got a top tip you can offer to fellow paddlers? Don’t drive off in your car with the sun roof open when you’ve got a load of kayaks on the roof after a river trip; it leads to a wet experience!

Can you see the paddler in this shot? He is there in a green boat

taking the route on river right to avoid the big rock. Can anyone recognise this place? Can anyone recognise this paddler?

It is the Ribo waterfall in Switzerland and it is allegedly a great 15 metre jump, straight into a big pool. The book says “The biggest danger is in climbing down from the street”.

The paddler is Danny. He said “Lol.. The Fall was actually ok, though it's normally run at lower levels. There were things in the Gorge upstream that we didn't run... that was just knarl!”
