The River Dart 7th February Organiser - Rich Carter Meet at the clubhouse, 8am Cost £13

We’re going the River Dart, but which section will we do? That is the question you are all asking!

Upper, could be both if we are ca-tering for mixed abilities! And we might even be able to fit in a trip on the Lower for those not wanting so much adrenaline.

So it’s a wait and see, and decide on the day.

If you are interested in any of these sections, please put your name on the list and

option.

Of course it is all water-dependent and the Instructors have

everyone does.

Which ever section you do, the Dart is a beautiful river, with its crystal clear water, beauti-ful surround-ings and peace and tranquillity.

The River Exe 28th February Organiser - John Kent Meet at the clubhouse, 8am Cost £10

This trip is always a favourite. It is the river we paddled when we did the Tiverton weekend and for those of you who went on the training week-end it would be a good opportunity to put all those skills you learned into practice.

We start at Bolham and finish this time at Bickleigh, with six sloping weirs in between and a distance of about 6 miles. The first weir is Bolham weir which has a nasty tow back when there is a lot of water so we may portage this. Down to Tiverton there are three more weirs, Salmon Ponds (the one with the steps), Tiver-ton Town and Walronds, with some short grade 2 rapids in between.

Beyond Walronds there are a couple of miles of easy grade 2 and then you get to Broken weir which really is bro-ken these days and you have to avoid being swept into the trees below it. Then onto Bickleigh weir with a play wave at the bottom and this is where we get out.

Be sure to bring lots of food and warm clothes for the journey.

Tryweryn 27/28th March Organiser - Tim Cottle

A self catering weekend away in North Wales.

The river Tryweryn is a dam re-leased river so while other rivers are drying up, this one goes! This river is not for novice paddlers as the water is graded 3/4, with some man-maintained play spots in the first 2km and then there is 6km of easier water, the features on this lower section being natural.

Accommodation: in previous years some have camped and some have stayed in a hostel so exact costs will vary.

Transport: most people leave Frome on Friday evening and re-turn on Sunday afternoon. We will organise the cars nearer the time. Fuel costs will be in the region of £20-£25

If by any chance there is no dam release over that weekend, our trip will have to be cancelled or re-arranged.

And finally, the clocks go forward this weekend so there is one less hour for rest/ recovery / drinking / general socialising etc!

The River Frome 7th March Organiser - Andy Bell Meet at the clubhouse, 9am Cost £3

We will meet at the clubhouse at 9am and get changed there in the warm before we hop into cars and

go to the start point.

The Frome trips are always good fun, and good turn-outs make for a lovely paddle. We never quite know the section we will paddle till the morning we go. So it’s a bit of a mystery trip. It is often Creamery to Langham Farm because this section has some lovely weirs on it, all different and some offering a chance to play in the stoppers. Oth-ers are just adrenaline inducing ver-tical drops! However there is the possibility that we will do the sec-tion with the much talked about ‘Zoom Flume’ with its lovely play waves below.

Whichever we do, we will have some flat sections and some weirs to drop over! Let’s hope there is not much walking.

This paddle is good for paddlers at Passport and One Star standard and above. See you there!

Wednesday DVD nights

7 - 9 pm at the Clubhouse

We meet, chat, have a cup of tea and then get stuck into the serious busi-ness of watching a canoeing DVD to-gether. Last month’s meeting was put to good use reviewing the Tavy pictures, and we spotted an omission in the Points gained! (See Back Page. Then we sat and watched ‘Tweaking the Nose of Terror’. Awesome!

The evenings are good fun. It’s a chance to meet fellow paddlers and find out the latest news in the club. Do come. Tea and cake are free!

Sunday Morning sessions 14th February, 14th March At Market Yard, 10 - noon. Cost £2

Everyone is welcome to our regular monthly morning paddle at Market Yard.

Last month the water levels were perfect, but it was very, very cold.

Meet at the Clubhouse, 10am till noon. Paddling is not essential! You can just meet, chat and sip tea as did a few of us last month.

Go to page 14 for a report of last month’s morning paddle.

Pool Sessions Fridays 8-9pm at the Leisure Centre, Frome £2.50 youth members, £3 adult members

Pool sessions start again on 5 February and run through February and March.

You need to bring a towel and swimming costume - we provide the boats and paddles.

If you bring your own boat, be sure it is clean and leaf free, and bring it in through the Fire Exit door.

If you have never been to a pool session before, tell Pam when you book in at the door and she will introduce you to the supervisor - the person who will help you on poolside.

All our coaches AND volunteers are invited to this meeting.

To be led by Alun and assisted by Pam, this meeting will get you up to speed on all the good practice around safeguarding. And we can answer any of your questions about the issue. We will also explain the BCU’s stance on the new Vetting and Barring scheme.

Think about coming if you are new to the role of volunteer or if you want a refresher.

Note: this meeting will be in place of the normal Wednesday club session.

The AGM is your chance hear what the com-mittee has been doing for you in 2009, how we have looked after our assets and how we have spent your money!

We also vote in a new committee

We elect a total of 12 people: Chairman Vice Chairman Treasurer Secretary and 8 other members Then we listen to your views and plan for 2010. We also bring to the membership any proposals from the committee. Please see the Agenda, P8 for details of proposals for this year.

River Axe Race 7th March

Sadly this event clashes with our Frome trip, and so we are not going to go to it as a club. But if you are willing to sort your-self out and get there under your own steam, Pam has the details and an entry form.

The Axe Race is a good introduction to canoe racing. Separate classes and age categories allow for fair competitive rac-ing.

The race starts at 11am at Whitford Bridge and finishes at Axmouth Har-bour (5 miles).

Fees: £7 for BCU mem-bers and £8 for non BCU members. If you enter on the day you pay an extra £2. You need to book in be-tween 9.30 and 10.30 at Whitford Bridge.

space anyway because where ever you looked there were tables and chairs of what seemed like happy people. Of course, one of the main purposes of the Social is to present our annual awards and we did this Oscar-style this year with on-screen pictures of the nominees and a vid-eo of a presentation of one winner who sadly could not be with us. (See the video on the website gallery.)

We need to thank Andy Lyall for managing the bar so effectively all evening, with some help from a few others. Also thanks must go to Bev, (Alun’s wife) on the door, and to all those who donated raffle prizes and helped during the evening in one

way or another. But most of all we need to thank members who came and made the evening so pleasant.

After thought: The raffle combined with the ‘drinks raffle’ made a total of £100 - thank you everyone. I am not surprised by this amount though be-cause I gather Hazel was offering to ‘strip for 50p’ all evening. I don’t think we have had an offer like that at previ-ous events – Hazel we want you back at all our ‘do’s from now on! But what did Tim make of it, I wonder?

Alex Nicol was awarded the Youth Cup, in recognition of his significant contribution to the picture gallery on the Website, assisting on Wednesdays and for the develop-ment of his own personal paddling skills.

Megan Jones received the Ivor Morgan Trophy, for her contribution to coaching this year, in particular to the Passport programme which was run in 2009 as it should be.

Reports - 2009 Prizewinners continued


Fred Hobbs was awarded the Langham Trophy for his suc-cess at the Langham Farm Slalom. Fred came 6th in the Div 3 K1 Mens on Saturday and then on Sunday he came second, only one second away from First.

Andy Lyall was awarded the Bayman Trophy, for the best result in a National Competition. Andy is now ranked 67 in Division 2 K1 Mens. Well done Andy!

Jonathan Howell was awarded the Steve Allen Trophy, for the most promising new-comer to the club.

Peter and Sam Nicol got the Volunteers Cup, for their contribution to the organisation of Wednesday club sessions.

Gary got the Editor’s Award, for his long running series of articles about the life of bags and their owners.

Amanda Reeves - the Coppernose Clip Award, for the most swims in the year 2009. She clocked up a very modest 24 points!

Tango with the Tavy

24th January The Tavy is a pretty one, and like a farmer’s daughter has a good sense of fun but can be a bit naughty. She likes to give a thrill but needs a lot of attention and woe betide those who do not satisfy her needs.

A large group of 23 gathered at the clubhouse to visit one of the most beautiful rivers we paddle. A verita-ble myriad of vans including Bill’s big red bus from Warminster were em-ployed to transport us to our desti-nation in the centre of Tavistock where we unloaded ourselves and our kit and met Dave in the car park.

Bill was introduced to the ‘’catch up if you can’’ game when the shuttle convoy left for the get out point without the big red bus.

As we waited for the shuttle to re-turn we did wonder if it had gone pear shaped but at last they all returned as planned.

We began the paddle in the centre of Tavistock but were soon in the rural depths of Devon surrounded with trees and wild life. Evidence of the otter population manifest-

ed itself in the form of a half eaten salmon marooned on boulder and several kingfishers confirmed the abundance of fish.

The start of our journey was without incident and we made progress with

a bump and a scrape over and around some of the visible and not quite visi-ble rocks before the first drop, which

caught out the unwary. The accu-mulation of points had begun

and they continued to be accrued on the grade 2/3 drops allowing some useful rescue practice.

more adventurous to tackle.

A sunny glade with a small beach overlooking a grade 3 section pro-vided a perfect lunch stop, though the cafe was unattended. During the stop we took the opportunity to check out the best line to run the grade 3 section. For some who rec-ognised their limits or felt they wanted to stay dry, a walk round

was sensible, for others the line was decided upon and the point of no return was passed.

We continued through the wooded valley until the river disappeared over a large weir, a good chance to stretch the legs for most, but a few took the plunge and found a way down.

By now the day was almost over

and we just had time to surf on a friendly river wide play wave be-fore trying to find the concealed get out point in the trees.

This trip is a great introduction to grade 2/3 water and judging by the smiles at the end was enjoyed by all (or perhaps they were pleased to be off the water?)

Thanks to Rich, the rescuers, and ‘the vans’ who all enabled the day to go ahead.

Ed: Thanks Alun, for this report. It was indeed a brilliant trip! In those ‘after-trip’ discussions you always have, one of the recur-ring comments was “You would come round a corner and never be quite sure what was going to meet your eyes! Inevitably there was a plethora of bodies and up-turned boats...” Ah well!

Reports - Sunday Morning Paddle, 10th January

January 10th Sunday morning paddle

Depending on whose car thermome-ter you believed, the temperature ranged between –3°C and 0°C as we

drew into the car park that morning. The water tempera-ture must have been

close to zero - the sheets of ice on the river gave that away. No one could remember when the Frome was last frozen, but records show that we had lows of –3°C in 1991 and lower than that in 1986 and 1963. Who can remember when the Frome was last frozen?

Not deterred, a group of 7 paddlers got on and paddled upstream. Most of these went on the water just to

show up the ones of us who just sat in the clubhouse, chatting to avoid the necessity of skull caps, five ther-mals, knitted bootees, gloves and so on. However Andy L was not go-ing to let his training regime go astray and he got on to paddle for

real - slalom training.

Howard says he was glad to have paddled. ‘It was really invigorating’. Others had different descriptions!

They weren’t the only ones out having a good time - ducks were there floating around alongside them. It was Alan Carpenter who said, rather aghast, ‘They splashed me. I’ve never been splashed

Sunday Morning Paddle continued + Courses

Sam, bless him, decided to practise for his 18-day Himalayan expedition, and took advantage of the glacial melt to do a couple rolls. He said as he came up the second time gasping, ‘That was bleeping cold ...’ (or equivalent!) and as he sat later in the clubhouse drinking tea, he said ‘My head still hasn’t recovered.’

Ed: And just in case you have spot-ted that Stu doesn’t appear to be wearing a buoyancy aid - he was. It is under his warm jacket. Rich would not let him get on until he had checked!

What’s New?

This is the second time I’ve written this article section for newsletter and it aims to inform readers of new kit released recently. It will include all those new expensive toys plus those little ‘treat yourself’ ones. To start off again the new Pyranha Burn which is a adaption of the much ac-claimed 2009 Burn. This new boat is very similar to the old but has significant improvements. It has big-ger rails which means it’s easier to carve and cut into eddies. The boat has been redesigned so that it is easier to roll which was found to be a problem with the old Burn.

Another new product out at the moment is the limited edition Astral Green Jacket. Astral has released this

limited edition coloured vest which is made to be different and something a bit odd. Astral has always been a company that has been in the back light when it comes to PFDs but they are something to be considered. These aids are designed in very different ways to the Palm ones so may be more

comfortable.

This next item is a product which has been in the planning for 2 years but is now available to purchase. It is

the coming together of Merrill and Palm to make a good white water kayaking boot. This boot has the sole of a walking boot but the top of a water sport boot. This means they’re excellent for climbing up and down river banks for portages.

We are offering a period of amnesty for the return of kit in the month of February which means you can return all

club kit, no matter how long you may have been harbour-ing it, without fear of public flogging or expulsion from FCC! Even if you are sure you aren’t a kit hoarder, we strongly recommend you CHECK for un returned kit - we know how hard it is to keep track.

COMPETITION TIME .. two more

This is Alun Jones who was 14 at the time of the photo, 15 years ago (?!) , taken after he had just competed in Chippenham Canoe Club's Marden and Avon race. Alun took the cup for first junior.

The clue we gave you about Alun being a ’raft ex-pert’ refers to the 75 mile raft race he completes on the River Wye annually. Alun paddles in a team of 6 or 8 and they start with about 30 other rafts made from kevlar bows and interlocking barrels which are pressurised with air or helium. The race starts at Hay on Wye and ends above Sy-monds Yat 3 days later having spent 15 to 20 hours on the raft.

Ed: when Alun was asked if he had ever won or come in the first three he said:

“We normally make the top ten but we struggle to get committed crew members and many first tim-

ers say never again!” .... Do you blame them?

A clue for you This person is new to the club, but obvious-ly not to the sport! A Division 2 slalom paddler in his youth, this was taken at Washburn in 1981.

COMPETITION TIME .. two more

This is Nick Kent who looks like this now, on the right. Maybe the waveski he is sitting on helped you to work it out, as Nick comes from a family of very successful paddle surfers. Both his mum and his dad were successful in national surf competitions in the past, so it’s not surprising that Nick had a go even if on dry land for the photo!

However Nick didn’t stick with surfing. He branched out trying slalom, river running, playboating and so on.

He is now a serious and dedicated white water paddler - see him in this picture, doing a move called the ‘Hammer’ on one of the weirs on the Fournel in the French Alps last June. Grade 4 and 5 are his play spots now, but Nick joins the club when he can. He was the one who led the way down that early morning ‘blast’ on the Upper Dart in our recent Dart Weekend.

Bits and Pieces


Do you want to paddle some of the best white water in the French Alps?

FCC member Bill Fryer is helping to organise an expedition to the Ecrin Alps on 27 July to 10 August for members of the Frome Canoe Club, Warminster Adventure Sports Club & Frome Caving Group.

The Ecrin Alps have a group of glacial-fed rivers in grades 2-5 as well as a 400 metre artificial white water slalom course. They are fed by glaciers and are at their best in mid-summer. There will be a minibus and kayak trailer going out.

There will be the chance to do: white-water kayaking, climbing, downhill MTB, mountaineering and via ferrata. But you can do as much or as little of every activity as you like. The trip will be family-friendly (Bill will be taking his kids who are as young as four). Accommoda-tion will be on a campsite right next to a white water river. Unfortunately we just couldn't get your picture in this month’s edition - we will try to get it in next month.

From an informed source This comment was overheard in the clubhouse recently:

“I’m going to beat you into Division 1 by the end of the season.”

Can you think who said it?

Present at the time were Fred, John, Andy L, Alex, Rich, Jack and Pam. We like a bit of competition don’t we? However the sting in the tail is that if

it doesn’t come true then we’ll throw that per-son in the river at the end of the year!

So someone has a lot of training to do this year!

Stu might wonder where he got his 2 points from. We only spotted it on DVD Wednesday when we were reviewing Alex’s shots from the trip. The move, all caught on Alex’s camera is now on the website. The Topo Duo got caught sideways. Did they lean onto the rock? No! Luckily his co-paddler, Bex, was paying attention and saved them both with a nifty little brace (or was it a punt off the bottom?) Look for yourself!
