Life, for many of us, is lived with the accelerator pushed all the way to the floor and the rpm’s maxed out. We get so used to life rushing by in blur that we don’t know how to react when we slow down or when life slows us down. In Elijah’s case, he was busy prophesying, making the rain stop, praying for fire to fall from heaven, and cool stuff like that when all of the sudden his mission seemed to come to an end. (If you haven’t read 1 Kings 17-19 lately, do. It’s a fun read. Plus, you’ll be ready for Sun- day’s message.) Elijah didn’t handle the stoppage of work well. In fact, he manifested all the signs of clinical depression. He appeared totally fatigued. He slept a lot. He complained. He was suicidal. He needed to be told to eat. His view of reality was distorted. He felt all alone. And, he blamed oth- er people for his problems. While we all need to find times of rest and Sabbath (some of us sooner rather than later), we certainly don’t want to handle time off the way Elijah did. Nevertheless, if our bodies, minds and spirits grow accustomed to a continual fast pace, it can be difficult to slow down and enjoy a healthy break. Haven’t you had that experience? You’re charging along, managing problems, meeting deadlines, handling what comes up, nourishing yourself on stress and getting things done. Then comes the family vacation, or an unexpected illness, which forces you to do nothing and you find yourself bored or antsy. “It’s not the fall that gets you. It’s the sudden stop at the end.” You’ve heard this saying, right?

Well, it certainly came true for Elijah. Elijah didn’t fall from a height, but he fell in his emotions.

I noticed as I studied 1 Kings 17-19 in preparation for this week’s sermon (6/23/13) that Elijah

went from being a guy who was on top of the world to a fugitive on the run and his emotions

simply couldn’t handle this rapid transition. He faced what one writer dubbed the “deceleration

dilemma.”

In our fast paced world, sometimes we can face the same dilemma. Life, for many of us, is lived

with the accelerator pushed all the way to the floor and the rpm’s maxed out. We get so used to

life rushing by in blur that we don’t know how to react when we slow down or when life slows us

down. In Elijah’s case, he was busy prophesying, making the rain stop, praying for fire to fall

from heaven, and cool stuff like that when all of the sudden his mission seemed to come to an

end. (If you haven’t read 1 Kings 17-19 lately, do. It’s a fun read. Plus, you’ll be ready for Sun-

day’s message.)

Elijah didn’t handle the stoppage of work well. In fact, he manifested all the signs of clinical

depression. He appeared totally fatigued. He slept a lot. He complained. He was suicidal. He

needed to be told to eat. His view of reality was distorted. He felt all alone. And, he blamed oth-

er people for his problems.

While we all need to find times of rest and Sabbath (some of us sooner rather than later), we

certainly don’t want to handle time off the way Elijah did. Nevertheless, if our bodies, minds and

spirits grow accustomed to a continual fast pace, it can be difficult to slow down and enjoy a

healthy break. Haven’t you had that experience? You’re charging along, managing problems,

meeting deadlines, handling what comes up, nourishing yourself on stress and getting things

done. Then comes the family vacation, or an unexpected illness, which forces you to do nothing

and you find yourself bored or antsy. (Continued on page 3)

GOT YOUR ARMOR ON? It’s time to Stand Strong for God at

Kingdom Rock Vacation Bible School

2013! This year VBS will be held on

July 8th – 11th from 6:00pm to 8:30pm.

On Sunday, July 14th , the 5th lesson

will be given during Children’s

Church. Following worship, a Royal

Celebration will be held at the Freder-

ickburg Park for the entire family. Lunch and games will be

provided. See details in the announcement at right.

As VBS is quickly approaching, we are in need of Children

and Volunteers. Remember every child from age 4 to the

Sixth Grade (completed) is encouraged to attend. Registra-

tion forms are now available in the sanctuary or you may con-

tact the church office to pre-register. Registration by July 5th

is requested. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Eri-

ka Schuch at 330-466-5684 or at [email protected].

A volunteer sign-up sheet will be distributed during worship.

Snack donations will also be requested in the coming weeks –

any help will be greatly appreciated. In addition, we are in

need of greenery that we can borrow for decorating purposes

(plants, trees, indoor/outdoor carpet). If you have any green-

ery that you are willing to loan, please mark them, so they

may be returned at the end of VBS. The mission project will

be a canned food drive for Haven of Rest Ministries.

All of us are needed to make this week ROCK! Thanks in

advance for your help! And don’t forget to invite a friend and/

or family member to join us for this exciting fun-filled week as

we STAND STRONG for GOD!

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK (cont. from page 1)

Another bit of common wisdom says that, “Idle hands are the

Devil’s workshop.” This, too, can be true. David didn’t get into

trouble with Bathsheba until he decided to dawdle in Jerusa-

lem at a time “when kings go out to battle” (2 Sam. 11:1). Still,

we must be intentional about slowing down in healthy and

productive ways.

As the calendar sends us past the first official day of summer,

work for balance in the extremes of summer schedules. In the

midst of house painting, gardening, softball, VBS, mowing,

family reunions, parades and picnics find time for vacation,

Sabbath and lazy Sunday afternoons. And, if you find yourself

feel bored or antsy in those moments, just remember the rest

of Elijah’s story…God spoke to him in the quiet.

REFEREES OF THE GAMES We are looking for older youth and adult Volun-teers to help with the Kingdom Rock VBS Family Fun Day. We would like all families with kids 4 years – 6th grade to be able to participate in the fun day. So, if you do not have kids within that age group and would be willing to help with games that day, please contact Lisa McClelland at 330-749-4342 or [email protected]

Hear ye! Hear ye! V Noble knights and fair ladies, The honor of your presence is request-ed at the Kingdom Rock VBS Family Fun Day. All families with children age 4 years – 6th grade are invited to join us for an afternoon of merriment at the Royal Fredericksburg Community Park on Sunday, July 14th directly fol-lowing the 10:30 a.m. church service. Bring the entire family and come pre-pared to engage in some family friend-ly competition as families compete in various games to see who will win the coveted “Kingdom Rock Family Tour-nament Games” championship. There will be activities for all ages including a bounce house, face painting and crafts. Lunch is provided. Festivities will con-clude around 2:00 p.m.
