Who Are We? Psalm 79: 9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and forgive our sins, for your name’s sake. 10 Why should the nations say, ‘Where is their God?’ 13 Then we your people, the flock of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

We have begun a critical practice at the end of our worship at St. Paul as we collectively proclaim our intention to go forth into the world, led by Holy Spirit, to creatively connect, intentionally grow, and joyfully serve. This is our mis-sion statement and sets our posture towards the world while declaring to people who we are in Christ. We are mak-ing a positive difference when we offer and welcome youth from all over the county to our Vacation Bible School, by participating in efforts to meet assistance needs through HACAP and in cooperation with the Anamosa Police De-partment, and in enthusiastically supporting the Better Together Block Parties and Community Garden. These are ways we continually praise God. Church Leadership is asking you to prepare for the St. Paul Lutheran Annual Meeting, starting at noon on July 15, by reviewing the proposed budget & annual report. We would love to see your investment in our mission through your presence at the meeting. A grilled lunch will be provided as well. The Stewardship Committee, Finance Working Group, and Church Council have spent hours deliberating and praying over the budget numbers recognizing that in a very real way it reflects the values and principles of this faith community. Who we financially support and how we spend our collective money are expressions of the relationships we build, the visits we make, and the value we place on community life. Our church leaders have been praying the Suscipe prayer, first offered by St Ignatius Loyola in the early sixteenth century, at the All Leadership meetings since February: “Take Lord and receive all my liberty; my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace; that is enough for me. Your love and your grace are enough for me.” I am quite moved whenever I hear a group of people pray this together because if we truly let the words sink in and embrace them, we will experience newfound freedom in our lives. It is a prayer of surrender so that God can be God and fill us with good gifts for the sake of the world. I believe that is what we desire here at St. Paul and I believe this budget is an effort to reflect that desire. I encourage you to add the Suscipe prayer to the Welcoming Prayer in your daily dialogue with God and notice what is being freed in you. Bring that transformative freedom to our meeting, planning, and living. I have a personal desire to gather people together for the sake of study, learning, and community building, and so, beginning Tuesday, Aug. 7, I will begin to facilitate what I am referring to as “Rubber and the Road” from 6:30-8:00 p.m., immediately following Tuesday Community Prayer from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Come for either or both. During Rub-ber and the Road, we will share faith, engage scripture studies, explore topical presentations or YouTube talks, and avail ourselves of Visio Divina and other forms of prayer. RSVP is appreciated to assist with preparation. On Aug. 7, we will break open the scriptures for the following Sunday. I look forward to sharing my experiences in Houston at the National Youth Conference with you next month. In the meantime, blessings and peace,

Pastor Rodney

Happy Summer everyone!

We had a blast at our Shipwrecked Vacation Bible School! We had 71 kids attend through out the week and we had 14 crew leaders and 11 station leaders! Check out page 8 for photos from our week. The video will be on our website by July 15th.

I am just about finished with her children and youth ministry certificate that I have been working on since September.

As the summer continues I am looking forward to planning out our 2018-19 CYFM year with Pastor Rodney and the Children and Youth ministry team. Some changes for this fall will include an updated confirmation ministry curriculum for 7th and 8th graders. Our 5th and 6th graders will be using Grapple in their new small group. We are looking for individuals who would like to partner with us as small group leaders for our Kids For Christ (elementary age) groups, our Club 56 (5th and 6th Grade), and our high school youth group. Please contact Shawna if you are interested. We will be having a small group leader training and fellowship evening in late August. Details to come.

The ELCA National Youth Gathering Team

Our team flies out of Cedar Rapids early in the morning on Wednesday, June 27th and will re-turn home on July 2nd.

Want to see what is happening at the Gathering while we are there? Check out this link and watch the mass gatherings live with us online.

What will out trip look like?

Travel and Mass Gathering (Wednesday): Flying from Cedar Rapids to Houston. Setting in our ho-tel and then going to the evening Mass Gathering Opening Service. Each night of the Gathering we will come together in the NRG Stadium for a time of inspiring speakers, uplifting music and more. Be a part of the Mass Gatherings by indicating your group’s interest in Mass Casts when you register. Our speakers will share how God’s call, God’s love, God’s grace and God’s hope changed everything in their lives. Be watching here in the months to come as we release speaker names and bios. Our house band leads us in singing each night. You will sing some of your favorite praise songs and hymns and you will learn some new favorites!

Interactive learning (Thursday): Interactive Learning is a “Holy Playground” of sorts, that invites Gathering participants to encounter God through a variety of learning styles and sensory experiences. All 30,000 partici-pants have a dedicated day in the three day program rotation to experience the extensive offerings inside the over 700,000 square feet Interactive Learning space. From sports to creative expressions, service projects to quiet meditation, Interactive Learning offers something for everyone.

Synod Day (Friday): Worship and bible study gather with bishop and others from Synod will go with theme of Day 11:30-3. Then will be experiencing some community life activities. Community Life is a "One Stop Shop" for Youth and Adults, these events are happening in The NRG Arena daily starting June 27. It offers a place for youth to play games, inflatables, live stages with prizes and our own live bible studies that will happen in the afternoons. We will also offer a place of relaxation for participants in our Hammock Village. Community life also has volunteers that will help check you in at your hotel, and make sure you have everything you need for the Gathering.

Service learning (Saturday): Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaning-ful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. (Learn and Serve America National Service Learning Clearinghouse)

The mission of Service Learning Day is to: Invite participants to enter into the diverse story of Hou-ston. Empower our partners in Houston to further their mission. Join in relationships of accompaniment with our partners. Create opportunity for transformative experiences for Gathering participants so they return home as agents of change in their own communities.

The ELCA Youth Gathering invites participants to engage in one day of service learning during their time in Hou-ston. As a faith community, the ELCA Youth Gathering combines meaningful service, instruction and reflection with a faith lens of accompaniment.

Sunday Is our Mass Gathering Worship service. We will be serving communion. On Sunday, July 1 we will gather one last time in the stadium for closing worship and the Eucharist. Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will preach and we will celebrate and remember that Jesus Changes Everything!

Congratulations to Olivia Christianson and Ashlyn Fortune, they are this year’s recipients of the Debra Herren Weeks

Memorial Scholarship.

Ashlyn and Olivia were recognized at the 10:30 service on Sunday, June 10th.

The Scholarship Review Committee would like to thank all the seniors who applied for the scholarship.

PARKING ON SUNDAYS

Our neighbors have politely requested that we not park in front of their houses on the street on Sunday morning (from our driveway south to Huber Street). That is their only parking option and some are returning from work on Sun day morning. Thanks for your

sensitivity to our neighborhood relationships.

You will have the opportunity to learn more about this special pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Jordan from Mark Hoffman of Magi Travel. Please bring friends or family members that want to learn more. Bring any questions you may have as well. We still have space available on the trip but it is limited. We hope to see you August 23rd!

WOMEN OF THE ELCA Mary and Sarah Bible Study circles join together during June, July and August, meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at Woodland Park, beginning at 1:30. Sarah’s Circle will host the June study.

Sisters Ecumenical Bible Study meets on Tuesdays in the Classroom & office building at 2:00pm. The first Tuesday of the month they meet at Grounds & Goodies. Join us at noon for coffee when at Grounds and Goodies if you would like, join us on the first Tuesdays.

It’s time for ALY (Anamosa Lunches for Youth) summer lunches again. St. Paul is responsible for Thursday lunches and, as

always, the sack lunches will be prepared in the LCC kitchen. Beginning on Thursday, June 7, volunteers are needed at 10:00 am each Thursday for packing, and 2 drivers will leave for the meal sites around 11:15 am. Please sign up on the volunteer form posted on the bulletin board in the church entry. These sack lunches are provided free to all children and youths who come to the meal sites. ALY is an all-volunteer organization, funded by donations and grants. If you can’t volunteer your time, your dona-tions are always welcome, and can be sent or given to ALY treasurer, Janet Sanborn, at Citizens Bank. ALY Board members ask that we join in showing our appreciation to the Anamosa Fareway for their help in ordering food items at the best prices possible, and delivering at no charge. Manager Brian has also organized his vendors to donate close-to-sell-date items. ALY couldn’t continue its work without community support, including St. Paul’s gift of inventory space, the LCC gifts of storage and kitchen use, and financial help from Anamosa residents and area churches and businesses.

Celebration Singers are on their traditional summer break, and I want to thank Barb and our faithful singers for an inspiring experience. From early fall through late spring we have prepared anthems for the traditional worship

service, sharing our gift of music for the glory of God. We look forward to joining together in a few months to begin another season’s offerings.
