2009Outlook These are exciting times for the University of

North Carolina men’s lacrosse program as theTar Heels officially inaugurate the Joe Breschicoaching era on February 7, 2009 by hostingRobert Morris at Fetzer Field. Breschi, a 1990Carolina graduate, returned to his alma materas the head coach in June 2008 after an 11-yeartenure at Ohio State where he rescued a Buck-eye program from oblivion and made it into anNCAA Tournament calibre side.Breschi is anxious to return the Tar Heel pro-

gram to its past glory. He played and alsoserved as an assistant coach at Carolina duringa period of time when UNC made 12 final fourappearances in a 14-year span from 1980 to1993.The Baltimore native who played his high

school ball at Calvert Hall is also enthusedabout adapting UNC’s style to one of his liking,a style which is also favored by today’s colle-giate players.THE OFFENSE“The offense will be transition style, pushing

the ball from defense through our D-mids andLSMs,” elaborates Breschi. “We will ask a lot ofour defense throughout the year to pressureteams and put the ball on the ground to utilizeour athletes in the transition game.“We will run motion sets on 6v6 opportunities,

attacking from every position on the offensiveend, making our style difficult to defend. We willlook for matchups that benefit our strengths asa team and put our guys in a position to be suc-cessful individually.”ATTACKExpect the attack unit to be keyed by return-

ing starters Bart Wagner (Glen Arm, Md.) andGavin Petracca (Manhasset, N.Y.) with sopho-more Billy Bitter (Stowe, Vt.) stepping in at thethird starting spot for the graduated Michael B.Burns.The top backups at the attack spots will be

junior Kevin Federico (West Islip, N.Y.), truefreshman Thomas Wood (Richmond, Va.) andsenior Matthias McCall (Manteo, N.C.).Wagner, who has led the Heels in scoring

three straight seasons, will lead the unit. He hastremendous hands and vision and the ability toscore in 6v6 and transition.Bitter had a tremendous fall ball season for

Carolina. He is a dynamic lefty dodger who canbreak down a defense at any time which helpsto open up his teammates. The steady Petracca is a versatile player who

can dodge, finish and distribute the ball. Breschifeels he will fit the system well.Federico is a lefty finisher who rides well and

hustles all over the field. Breschi labels Woodas a right-handed Billy Bitter. A dynamic player,he can shoot the lights out of the ball. His skillsare tremendous and he will be used at both at-tack and midfield. McCall is known for his abil-ity to chase the ball all around the field. He isrelentless in his love and enthusiasm for thegame and his style of play illustrates that.OFFENSE MIDFIELD1st Line–Ben Hunt, Bobby McAuley andSean DelaneyBreschi indicated in the fall that two seniors

and a junior would play on the first line midfieldthis spring. This trio is Ben Hunt (Arnold, Md.),Bobby McAuley (Hicksville, N.Y.) and SeanDelaney (Moorestown, N.J.).Hunt ranks as a major threat on the field and

is described by Breschi as one of the best play-ers in the game. Hunt has excellent skills both

right-handed and left-handed and he puts majorpressure on the defense every time he touchesthe ball. He is a down-hill dodger who is difficultto defend.McAuley plays with a tremendous versatility

in his game. He has the ability to control thegame through great communication and skillsset. He plays both a finesse and a physical styleof lacrosse, creating issues for opponents. Hehas terrific hands and vision. The third component in the first line is De-

laney. Sean is the most physical dodger on theTar Heel team. He actually looks for the contactand runs through the slides to get to the cage.2nd Line–Sean Burke, Cryder DiPietro andJimmy DunsterGoing into spring practice, Breschi lists his

second line as consisting of junior Sean Burke(Fort Salonga, N.Y.), junior Cryder DiPietro(Ruxton, Md.) and freshman Jimmy Dunster(Cos Cob, Conn.).Burke has tremendous talent, size and skills.

He’s a great athlete who can play both ends ofthe field to help bolster the Tar Heels’ transitiongame. Breschi said keeping Burke healthythroughout the season will be a key to thesquad’s potential success.DiPietro is a big middie who has solid skills

and a terrific shot. He is one of the best shoot-ers on the team with his hands free.Freshman Dunster is an athlete who really

came on in the fall, running the field and playingan aggressive style of offense. He attacks thecage well and worked on improving his shot inthe off-season.Breschi also said he expects to see redshirt

sophomore Colin Sherwood (Greensboro,N.C.) and freshman Tyler Morton (Denver,Colo.) making an impact in the offensive midfieldthis season.THE DEFENSE“We will play an aggressive style of defense

to put pressure on teams at the offensive end ofthe field,” says Breschi. “We are looking to dic-

    2009Outlook

tate the tempo of the game, playingman to man, zone, shut-offs and a highpressure style of lacrosse.DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDBreschi identified six players he ex-

pects to see in the mix in the d-midarea, citing three players who will seethe bulk of the playing time, a groupwhich consists of sophomore ChrisHunt (Arnold, Md.), redshirt sophomoreMichael Burns (Medford Lakes, N.J.)and freshman Chris Layne (Downing-town, Pa.). Hunt showed tremendousathleticism in the fall, turning up theUNC transition game and playing anaggressive style of defense. He canshut down offensive middies but also bea threat on offense. Burns is the mostphysical defender at the midfield thatthe Tar Heels have. Another transitionplayer who runs the field extremely welland can face-off with great successwhen Face-Off Yearbook preseasonfirst-team All-America and All-ACCchoice Shane Walterhoefer (EllicottCity, Md.) needs a rest. Burns’ compet-itiveness is evident every time the TarHeels step on the field.Layne is a youngster the coaches

moved to D-middie in the fall. He blos-somed in the role with great confidenceto defend and handle the ball betweenthe lines. Tommy D’Alessandro(Charlotte, N.C.), Matt Davie (Syosset,N.Y.) and Logan Corey (Chapel Hill,N.C.) will also battle for playing timecoming out of the fall.LSM POSITIONFreshman Mark Staines (Gambrills,

Md.) was the biggest surprise of the fallfor the coaching staff. He has amazingathleticism between the lines and as aformer middie his ball-handling skillsmake him a huge threat in transition. He will also face-off at times whenneeded.Junior Michael Jarvis (Richmond,

Va.) is improving every day. His size,

stick skills and range make him difficultto beat in 1v1 situations. SophomoreMilton Lyles (Miami Gardens, Fla.) hada solid fall, switching between close de-fense and LSM. He has continued toimprove his stick skills to add to his“fastest man on the team” title. SeniorPell George (Baltimore, Md.) and jun-ior Kerry McCormick (Garden City,N.Y.) will also be counted on in thespring while sophomore Scott Bollert(Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.) is redshirtingafter off-season foot surgery.CLOSE DEFENSETwo of the starting positions on close

defense appear set heading into thespring. Senior captain Jack Ryan(Darien, Conn.) has been an enforceron defense, directing traffic and playinga physical style that has set the tone forthe close D. An excellent athlete, Jackhas solid skills and stick work to helpwith the clearing game.Sophomore Ryan Flanagan (West

Islip, N.Y.) is probably also set in a start-ing spot for the Tar Heels. Flanagan isa rangy defender with solid ability to de-fend in 1v1 situations. A terrific athlete,Ryan covers a lot of ground with hiswing span, knocking down passes andcreating havoc for the offense.Five Tar Heels have all shown signs

of gathering up the third starting spot.Breschi has indicated it may be defenseby committee at this starting position. Inthe hunt are sophomore Kevin Piegare(Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), senior An-drew Pyke (Baltimore, Md.), juniorSean Jackson (Fairfax, Va.), redshirtjunior Chris Cortina (Pennington, N.J.)and freshman Charlie McComas(Parkton, Md.)GOALIEThe Tar Heels return one of the best

netminders in the nation in redshirt sen-ior Grant Zimmerman (Cockeysville,Md.), a preseason All-ACC selection asnamed by Face-Off Yearbook. Zimmer-

man will be in his third full-time year asUNC’s starter after sharing the positionas a freshman. He is a terrific stopperwith great hands and the ability to runthe defense. This past fall, he contin-ued to work hard on his clearing game. His athleticism is amazing with greatspeed and the agility to be a threat out-side the cage.Freshman James Petracca (Man-

hasset, N.Y.), the younger brother ofGavin, had a tremendous fall, playing inall three fall ball games and saving over65 percent of the shots he faced. He’sa classic ball stopper with high energyand enthusiasm between the pipes. Hecontinues to work on his clearing gameand stick handling. Junior ChrisMadalon (Darien, Conn.) will be red-shirting during the 2009 season.THE XCarolina is fortunate in that it returns theplayer considered by many to be the topface-off man in the country in seniorShane Walterhoefer. “Walt” has setevery conceivable record in the TarHeel archives in three seasons and henow looks to hunt down players at thetop of NCAA charts in his senior cam-paign. Both sophomoreMichael Burnsand freshman Mark Staines will becounted on as proven backups.A DEEP BENCHThe Tar Heels’ deep bench also in-

cludes junior attackman Joe Howard(Chapel Hill, N.C.), freshman attackmanRyan Kotowski (Crofton, Md.), sopho-more defenseman Emmit Kellar (Glyn-don, Md.), freshman defenseman GraySmith (Winston-Salem, N.C.), sopho-more goalkeeper Jamie Locke (Char-lotte, N.C.), freshman midfielder MattConte (Thornton, Pa.) and freshmanmidfielder Jeff Muscatello (Wells,Maine).
