Welcome to the first Reel Brazil Film Festival. I am delighted to be showing a New Zealand audience some of the things that Brazil has already shown me. The films selected in this programme highlight Brazil’s diversity, its joys and its fears. Some aspects of my home country are widely known, but some may just surprise you.
This festival aims to show a REAL Brazil: one that has nothing to hide. A country where passions rule, be it good or bad, a country where happiness may sometimes be interrupted, but never lost.

Bem-vindo ao Reel Brazil!
Welcome to New Zealand’s first Brazilian film festival, and a particularly warm welcome to any visitors to Wellington.
This is the arts and culture capital of New Zealand and I am delighted that Wellington is hosting this festival to showcase the creativity of this huge, diverse and vibrant nation. And how appropriate that it should be in a city famed for its diversity, its film industry and its love of a good party!
Wellington in November doesn’t feel much like Rio, perhaps. But if we can’t stand beneath an amber moon and softly murmur, we can at least soak up the atmosphere of Brazil through the medium of film.
Brazil speaks to us of sunshine, passion, samba and carnival. And this festival pays tribute to that tradition, from its roots, through the glamour and glory of the Carmen Miranda era and on to today’s annual spectacles in Rio, Bahia and elsewhere.
There is far more to Brazil than that, of course, and the classic and modern films on show in this festival will take audiences deep into the nation’s heart. So get some fruit on your hat and samba on down for a glimpse of the real Brazil.

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the first edition of Reel Brazil Film Festival in New Zealand.
This event, which I hope will become part of Wellington’s annual vibrant cultural calendar, comes to enhance the ever growing friendly relationship between our countries.
For those who already share the movie sessions at our Embassy, this is another opportunity to check past and recent productions of the successful Brazilian film industry.
As we cannot change the physical distance of our Nations, what better way to bring you closer to the different aspects of Brazilian culture than through the big screen.
I congratulate director Leandro Cavalcanti for this initiative and wish him all success!

Australian director Hunt, does not focus on the horrors of slavery, but rather the influence this history has on their music.

Mari Corrêa is a Brazilian documentary film director and editor as well as co-director of the NGO, Videos in the Villages (VNA), which provides training programmes for indigenous videomakers. This project has resulted in the creation of important image archives of indigenous peoples of Brazil, and the production of over 70 films, most of which have received national and international awards.

Reel Brazil Film Festival will host a Panel Discussion at The Film Archive, bringing together Brazilian and New Zealand professionals from the film industry. Topics will include indigenous challenges and achievements in both countries and how New Zealand and Brazil can work together on the audiovisual front.
