2009 MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY - 1

2009 MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW

Experienced Vikings are building off two straight national meet appearances and have six runners back from last year’s top seven

As long as Paul Olsen has been the head men’s cross country coach at Augustana (and he is entering his 44th season in 2009) the words “optimistic” and “excited” are used often in any pre-season prognosis. The veteran mentor, who last spring had the track at Ericson Field named after him, once again can barely hide his enthusiasm when talking about his team.

There is good reason to be excited because last year his team qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet for the second consecutive season and for the 24th time in school history. With six of the top seven runners returning and 20 letterwinners in the mix, it is fairly easy to see why Olsen can’t wait to get started.

“I’m always excited,” said Olsen who has led the Vi-kings in cross country since 1966 and in track & field since the 1968-69 school year. “We have tremendous leadership from our seniors and there is a level of confidence with this team that is fun to see.”

The senior trio of Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.), Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Missouri) and Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) will serve as tri-captains. All three have enjoyed tremendous careers so far and are poised to finish their senior seasons in fine fashion.

Zook shared the team’s MVP honor a year ago and was the top Viking in the NCAA Division III national meet with a 50th place finish. Bailey has been a top seven performer his entire career and Hart had a superb sophomore season before suffering from an injury as a junior. All three have run under 15 minutes in the 5,000 during track.

Juniors Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) and Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) were both in the top seven last year. Bowman shared the MVP award with Zook and the graduated Andy Kubiak while Carmody was the team’s third man at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. Sophomores Billy Wisser (Hersey HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) and Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) both claimed valuable national meet experience as fresh-men.

Seniors Tom Ries (Iowa City Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) and Zach Riley (Winnebago HS, Win-nebago, Ill.) along with juniors Tim Faith-Rosley (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) and Brad Keating (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) will all make legitimate runs at the top seven. Sophomores Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.), Bran-don Gittelman (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Washington) will certainly be in the mix as well. Junior Ryan Miller (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) was in the team’s top five last fall before getting hurt.

While it is always tough for freshmen to make the adjustment to running 8,000 meters, Olsen is high on this year’s class. Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Mo-line, Ill.), Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensonville, Ill.), Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Kyle McNicholas (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) have made the biggest splash in the pre-season.

Last year the Vikings wee second in the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational, the Dan Huston Invitational and fifth in the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational and sixth in the Illinois Intercollegiate Championship. That was all during the regular season. In the post-season Augus-tana took second in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, fifth in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional and 21st in the NCAA National Meet. All of that was accomplished without an established number one runner. Four different Vikings took turns as the top finisher throughout the season.

“I think that once again we will be very balanced,” said Olsen, who is a member of both the Augustana Tribe of Vikings and the Illinois Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association’s Halls of Fame. “Making it to the national meet is a tremendous achievement, especially given the competition in the Midwest Re-gion. We have been there two years in a row and this team believes it can run with anybody in the nation. This will be a fun team to watch develop.”

2 - AUGUSTANA VIKINGS

HEAD COACH PAUL OLSEN

The name Paul Olsen has become synonymous with Augustana cross country and track & field and with good reason. The energetic and enthusiastic mentor has been producing winning teams and individuals since the mid 1960’s and he shows no signs of slowing down. He took over the head cross country coaching position in 1966 and he assumed the reigns of the track & field program in 1969. He completed his 43rd year as the head cross country coach and his 41st season as the head coach in track & field heading into the 2009-10 school year.

Through it all, success has been his constant companion, no matter whether the sport is cross country or track & field. In those 43 cross country seasons he has led the Vikings into the NCAA national meet a total of 24 times, including appearances in the last two years (15th in 2007 and 21st in 2008). Ten times during his illus-trious career his teams have been in the top 10 in the nation and his 1980 unit placed second, just four points

shy of a national title.

Augustana has won two College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin cross country titles in the school’s history and both have come under Olsen. The Vikings have placed second 26 times under his tutelage including 16 times in the last 21 years. Only twice during the last 43 years have his teams finished as low as fourth in the conference. Five individual Augustana runners have won a total of seven league titles and in national competition the Vikings have garnered 22 All-America certificates and three individual national titles.

He has served as meet director of the NCAA Division III national meet five times and his team has hosted the Midwest Regional 20 times since 1979. In 1996 and 2001 the Vikings hosted both the NCAA Midwest Regional and the NCAA Division III national meet.

His track & field resume is just as impressive as he has led Augustana to 11 CCIW titles and 34 runner-up finishes, 28 in the outdoor meet and six during the indoor championships. In the spring of 2008 the Vikings won the CCIW title for the first time since 1984 and finished the year ranked first in the NCAA Division III “Power Rankings”. In addition, Olsen was named the NCAA Division III “National Coach of the Year” by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Vikings repeated their number one ranking in 2009 during the outdoor campaign.

A total of 194 individuals and 22 relay teams have won league titles during Olsen’s tenure in outdoor track and 21 individuals and six relay teams have claimed indoor championships, giving him an all-time total of 215 individual CCIW champs and 27 relay winners.

He has also coached a total of 154 NCAA Division III All-America selections in both indoor and outdoor track and 22 times Viking ath-letes have won individual national championships. The Blue and Gold has placed in the top 10 in the national meet 16 times including second place finishes in 1975 and 1981. In 2007 his team was eighth in the outdoor national championships.

He was inducted into the Illinois Track & Field Coaches Association “Hall of Fame” in January of 2004 and went into the Augustana “Tribe of Vikings Hall of Fame” in October of 2005.

A native of Onamia, Minnesota, Olsen came to Augustana after a teaching and coaching stint at Lincoln High School in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. During his first couple of years at Augustana he served as an assistant in both football and basketball before assuming full time duties in track and cross country.

Olsen is a man of many talents and interests. As a professor in the English Department at Augustana, Olsen ranks as one of the most popular teachers in the entire school with his classes in Black Literature and the Sacred and Profane consistently filled to capacity. In 1989 Olsen was one of just 120 teachers nationwide who were honored at the American Association for Higher Education conven-tion in Chicago. He was the only Augustana faculty member named to the elite group. He has been selected by the seniors at Augustana to give the final lecture 10 times during his career. At one time he used to perform a one-person play entitled “Pilgrimage with Poets” that was highly acclaimed.

Olsen is a graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he was captain of the track team and a starter for the football team as a defensive back. He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Oregon. He resides in Bettendorf, Iowa with his wife Jeanne. The couple have a pair of sons - David, who is a for-mer United States Navy S.E.A.L. and Eric, who is an actor and a stu-dent at Pepperdine University. Eric has appeared in several movies, including “Pearl Harbor”, “Not Another Teen Movie” and “Arthur’s Quest”, and television shows, such as “ER”,“Smallville” and “Get Real”.

2009 MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY - 5

2008 MCC REVIEW

Vikings make NCAA Division III national meet for the second straight year and 24th time in school historyFor the second consecutive year the Augustana Vikings qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet. Veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s team spent the entire season ranked in the top 15 of the national polls and they finished the campaign with a 21st place finish in the national meet. It was the 24th national meet appearance in the storied history of the men’s cross country program.

This was an interesting year for Olsen and his team as four different runners took turns at being the number one finisher in at least one meet. Freshman Billy Wisser (Hersey HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) led the team in three meets (Augustana Open, Brissman/Lundeen Invitational and Dan Huston Invitational) while senior Andy Kubiak (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) was the top man in two meets (Illinois Intercollegiate Championship and NCAA Midwest Regional) as was Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.) (UW-Oshkosh Invitational and NCAA National Championship). Sophomore Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) led the team in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

Instead of being able to count on one runner to be the number one guy, Olsen had to deal with the balance of this team as its strength. The season started with the Augus-tana Open way back on August 29 and this meet has always traditionally been one where the freshmen and newcomers get to perform for the first time at the collegiate level. The 2008 version was no different as Olsen turned his youngster loose and Wisser won the meet with a time of 20:13 on a four mile course at the Sunset Marina.

Three weeks later the entire team ran together for the first time when the Vikings toed the starting line at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championship in Normal, Illinois. Com-peting against most of the colleges and universities in the state, the Vikings placed sixth with 179 points. Kubiak led the way with a 19th place finish as Augustana was the second NCAA Division III team in the meet.

A five year winning streak at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational was snapped on September 27 at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island but the Vikings still ran well. Olivet Naza-rene won the team title with 68 points while Augustana was second in the 28 team field with 74 points as Wisser was the top finisher with an eighth place finish. Bowman was also in the top 10 in 10th place.

After a two week gap in the schedule, the Vikings took second among 12 teams at the Dan Huston Invitational at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Wisconsin-LaCrosse won the meet with 43 points while Augustana was second with 62. Once again it was Wisser leading the way as he took sixth. One week later Augustana tangled with a tremen-dous field at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational on October 18. No fewer than six teams ranked in the top 20 were in the competition and the Vikings placed a solid fifth with 183 points. Zook was the top place winner in 15th with a time of 24:50. That set up the CCIW championships and Augustana took second with 65 points as North Central won the team title for the 35th straight year. The Vikings were second for the third straight season and the 27th time in school history. Bowman was the top Augustana finisher in 11th with a time of 25:49.

The all-important NCAA Division III Midwest Regional was next on the agenda and the Vikings came through with a fifth place finish in the meet, which was held at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island. The top five teams qualified for the national meet and Augustana had its second straight trip and the 24th appearance in school history nailed down. North Central (51), Wisconsin-LaCrosse (64), Wisconsin-Stevens Point (83), Wisconsin-Oshkosh (134) and Augustana (182) were the national meet qualifiers from the 39 teams that competed. Kubiak was the top Viking in 26th place as the top five finishers were within 35 seconds of one another. In the national meet, Augustana placed 21st with 529 points as Zook was the top finisher in 56th place.

During the course of the season the Vikings displayed tremendous consistency, finishing second in three meets (Brissman/Lundeen, Dan Huston and CCIW), fifth in two (Wis-consin-Oshkosh Invitational and NCAA Midwest Regional) and sixth in another (Illinois Intercollegiate Championship).

Now in its 64th year, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enjoys a reputation as the “Best Small-College Conference in the Nation.” The league was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central, and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Competition opened in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois.

Carthage left the conference in 1952 but returned in 1961.In 1967 the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin to recognize Carthage, which had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin from Carthage, Illinois in 1962, and Carroll, which entered the league in 1955.

As is often the case with athletic conferences, CCIW member-ship has experienced some changes since the league’s inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College with-drew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton left following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and then for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined officially with the 1955 spring sports seasons. Carthage returned in 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 year. The last change in CCIW membership came following the 1991-92 season when Carroll withdrew.

Now eight members strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence. The league sanctioned women’s sports for the first time in the 1986-87 school year and Augustana participated in the first ever women’s compe-tition. That was on September 14, 1986 when the Vikings met North Central in a volleyball match that was held at Elmhurst College.

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin sanctions 21 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, volleyball and wrestling.

Augustana owns more CCIW team championships than any other school in the league with 172 total. Of those 172, the men have won 135 and 37 belong to the women.

Augustana owns two CCIW titles (1969 & 1970) and has 26 second place finishes in mens cross country. The sport was first sponsored in the CCIW in the fall of 1960.
