2009 RAILSPLITTER TENNIS SEASON OUTLOOK

2009 LMU Tennis www.lmurailsplitters.com

The 2008-09 Lincoln Memorial University tennis teams begin a new era of play under the direction of first year HeadCoach Benny Collins. With seven returning men’s players from a year ago and a host of new faces on the court for theLady Railsplitters, the 2009 spring schedule could have a bitter-sweet flavor for Lincoln Memorial University tennisfans.

The Railsplitters will be led by All-South Atlantic Conference performer Hannes Ganss (Erlangen, Germany) andfellow countryman Bastian Guenther (Erlangen Germany). While the Railsplitters finished 4-11 in the spring of2008, both Ganss and Guenther completed the season with a strong showing. Ganss began his collegiate career bygoing undefeated in 2008, and Guenther lost only two matches while helping the Railsplitters end the year in the semifi-nals of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament.

Also returning from a year ago will be juniors Zack Jones (Murfreesboro, TN), Gabor Heredi-Szabo(Kecksemet, Hungary) and Andras Pauko (Budapest, Hungary). Jones finished the 2008 season with a 5-8overall record but is reported to have improved his game by leaps-and-bounds from a year ago. While Heredi-Szabostruggled in his sophomore season, he has come back in 2009 in better physical shape and ready to turn things around.Pauko also struggled against the tough 2008 schedule but has worked hard in the off-season to take his game to a higherlevel.

Other returners from 2008 are sophomores Andrew Bates (Walton, KY) and Cody Swindall (Clintwood, VA). Bothlook to take their game to the next level in an effort to allow the Railsplitters to become a legitimate conference champi-onship contender and to once again reach the NCAA Tournament.

Among the newcomers this year will be freshmen Tom Goossens (Ledestraat, Belgium) and Corbett Smith(Tazewell, TN). Goossens will be an impact player and will fight for time at the no. 1, no. 2 or no. 3 singles positionswith sophomores Hannes Ganss and Bastian Guenther, while Smith will provide the Railsplitters depth at the end of thelineup this season.

With the loss of Kathleen Rollet, Martin Rezic, Rachel Redmond and Sofie Denlinger from a year ago, the LadyRailsplitter tennis team will be very young in 2009. Returning will be juniors Mandy Mills (Tazewell, TN) and NicoleCombs (Harrogate, TN) who will play toward the back of the Lady Railsplitter lineup. Returning sophomore EmilyOsborne (Middlesboro, KY) will possess the strongest game among the Lady Railsplitters returning from a year ago.

The 2009 spring schedule will showcase a host of talented newcomers in the Lady Railsplitter lineup. Fighting for timeat the no. 1 and no. 2 singles positions will be Sofia Lopez Memendi (Mexico City, Mexico) and Ann-SophieIndeherberge (ZonHoven, Belgium). Memendi, small in stature but big in fire-power, will be an immediate impacton the Lady Railsplitter program, while Indeherberge will bring much-needed collegiate experience as a transfer fromMidwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where she played her first two season of college tennis. Both willlead the LMU attack this season.

Other newcomers to the Lady Railsplitter program include junior Jenny Powell (Middlesboro, KY), junior KatyOliver (Bournemouth, England) and freshman Melanie Smith (Manchester, KY). Powell, a nursing student atLincoln Memorial University, played for Coach Collins while at Middlesboro High School and will provide depth in thelineup, while Oliver originally came to Lincoln Memorial University as a golfer. After sustaining a wrist injury thatprohibited her from swinging a club accurately, Oliver made the transition to tennis and will compete toward the backhalf of the lineup this season. Smith, who enters her first year of collegiate tennis, was a standout at Clay County HighSchool and will compete for time at the no. 3, no. 4 and no. 5 positions as well.

With a new flavor, a new desire and a host of talented players, the 2008-09 LMU tennis season proves to be interestingand an exciting one for Lincoln Memorial University fans. The schedule, as always, is among the toughest in the regionand both teams will be looking to make an appearance in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship inlate April.

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorialto Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates froman occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with GeneralOliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around theCumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed hisappreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to theUnion during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr.Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and miseryalive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these peoplewho have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do allI can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of itlater!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard

(who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to theCumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, theRev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request andjoined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring theslain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of AbrahamLincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculumwas based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individualliberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellowpeople; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people;free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 111th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30undergraduate areas of study and five graduate degrees and programs. It is also home to Tennessee’snewest medical school, the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, which admitted its first class in Fall2007. LMU had a Fall 2009-09 fall enrollment of 3,365 students and employed 96 faculty members at themain campus and 11 extended campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham LincolnLibrary and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 32nd yearof athletic tradition and excellence. The conference hasenjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people buildinga premier athletic conference throughout its history.

The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Con-ference was the North State Intercollegiate Atlantic Con-ference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the“Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Caro-lina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. Thesecharter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, AtlanticChristian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon Col-lege, and High Point University.

The North State continued to grow over the next30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina(1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became nec-essary when the league accepted Newberry as its firstSouth Carolina member in 1961. The league took on thename Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC)on May 20th of that year.

The CIAC saw several changes in the followingyears as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962.Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference.

The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975solely as a football conference. The league received itsname from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greens-boro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College,Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University,Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry Col-lege, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of MarsHill College, was named league president for its inauguralyear, by a vote of the member institutions.

After the first season of play in the SAC-8, theBears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first footballtitle.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, theSouth Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Confer-ence sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’sbasketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s

golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conferencegrew to 14 championship sports by adding women’s soc-cer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) andwomen’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference wascomposed of the same eight member institutions from 1975until 1988, when Wingate University replaced NewberryCollege as the eighth member institution. Newberry laterrejoined the conference in 1996.

Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal art colleges and universities, similar in size and ath-letic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Divi-sion II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent repre-sentatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA tour-naments.

Tusculum College was admitted as a member ofthe league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial Universitybecame the league’s newest member. Brevard College wasadmitted in 2007 as a provisional member.

The league membership now includes BrevardCollege in Brevard, NC; Carson-Newman College inJefferson City, TN; Catawba College in Salisbury, NC;Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC; Lincoln MemorialUniversity in Harrogate, TN; Mars Hill College in MarsHill, NC; Newberry College in Newberry, SC; TusculumCollege in Greeneville, TN; and Wingate University inWingate, NC.
