Morris Adjmi, founder and principal of Morris Adjmi Architects, began his career working

with renowned Italian architect Aldo Rossi in 1981 after obtaining his masters of architec-

ture degree from Tulane University. In 1986, Adjmi partnered with Rossi and opened Studio

di Architettura in New York City. They collaborated on numerous international projects

including the Hotel Il Palazzo in Fukuoka, Japan, which won an AIA Honor Award. Other

notable projects include Disney’s Celebration Office Complex in Orlando, Florida, the ABC

Headquarters in Burbank, California and the Scholastic Headquarters in New York City. Ad-

jmi established his own design firm in 1993 and is designing five new buildings in New York

City, including a mixed-use building in TriBeCa, a commercial building in the Gansevoort

Historic Market District and a residential building in the Ladies Mile Historic District. His

office is also working on a number of commercial buildings and hotels in Florida. A member

of the American Institute of Architects, Adjmi has edited two books on Aldo Rossi, and his

work has been covered in numerous publications.

Julia Sanford has a master of architecture degree from Georgia Institute of Technology where she was the

recipient of Georgia Tech’s SGF award, the Skidmore Owings and Merrill Portfolio Fellowship and the

Governor’s Honor for the state of Georgia. She received a bachelor of art in art history from the University of

North Carolina and a continuing education grant from Harvard University. Sanford is the founding principal

of Starr Sanford Design Associates, a custom residential design firm based in Amelia Island, Florida. Sanford

previously worked with Skidmore Owings and Merrill in San Francisco, Scogin Elam and Bray, John Portman

Associates, Nix Mann /Perkins and Will, The Brookwood Group and Thompson Ventulett Stainback in

Atlanta, Georgia. She has designed feature film sets for Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios, MGM

Studios and Walt Disney Pictures.

Robert A.M. Stern is a practicing architect, teacher and writer. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of

Architects and received the AIA New York Chapter’s Medal of Honor in 1984 and the chapter’s President’s

Award in 2001. As founder and senior partner of Robert A.M. Stern Architects, Stern personally directs the

design of each of the firm’s projects.

Stern is dean of the Yale School of Architecture. He was previously professor of Architecture and Director

of the Historic Preservation Program at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at

Columbia University. Stern served from 1984 to 1988 as the first director of Columbia’s Temple Hoyne Buell

Center for the Study of American Architecture. He has lectured extensively in the United States and abroad

on both historical and contemporary topics in architecture. He is the author of several books, including New

Directions in American Architecture; George Howe: Toward a Modern American Architecture; and Modern Classicism.

Stern’s particular interest in the development of New York City’s architecture and urbanism can be seen

in his books, New York 1900, coauthored with John Massengale and Gregory Gilmartin; and New York 1930,

coauthored with Thomas Mellins and Gregory Gilmartin, which was nominated for a National Book Award,

an unusual distinction for a book about architecture. In addition, he wrote and co-authored New York 1960

and New York 1880 with Thomas Mellins and David Fishman.

The late Charles Gwathmey received his master of architecture degree

in 1962 from Yale University, where he won both the William Wirt

Winchester Fellowship as the outstanding graduate and a Fulbright

Grant.

In the decades since, Gwathmey was honored with the Brunner Prize

from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1970 and elected

to the Academy in 1976. In 1983, he won the Medal of Honor from the

New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and in 1985,

he received the first Yale Alumni Arts Award from the Yale School of

Architecture. Three years later, the Guild Hall Academy of Arts awarded

Gwathmey a Lifetime Achievement Medal in Visual Arts, followed in

1990 by a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York State Society

of Architects.

Gwathmey served as president of the board of trustees for the Institute of

Architecture and Urban Studies and was elected a Fellow of the American

Institute of Architects in 1981.

From 1965 through 1991, Gwathmey taught at Pratt Institute, Cooper

Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, Princeton University,

Columbia University, the University of Texas and the University of

California at Los Angeles. He was Davenport Professor (1983 and 1999)

and Bishop Professor (1991) at Yale and the Eliot Noyes Visiting Professor

at Harvard University (1985).

Gwathmey was the spring 2005 William A. Bernoudy Resident in

Architecture at the American Academy in Rome.

Robert Siegel graduated from Pratt Institute with a bachelor of

architecture degree in 1962 and received his master of architecture degree

from Harvard University in 1963.

In 1983, the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects

recognized Siegel’s skill and leadership as an architect with its Medal

of Honor. He received the Pratt Institute Centennial Alumni Award in

Architecture in 1988, and in 1990 he accepted a Lifetime Achievement

Award from the New York State Society of Architects. He was elected a

fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1991.

Throughout his professional career, Siegel has served as a design

critic, juror and lecturer at schools of architecture and professional

organizations. In 1983, he organized the Pratt Institute Student Intern

Program within the Gwathmey Siegel office—part of his continuing

interest in nurturing the skills of talented young architects.

Siegel is chairman of the board of trustees and a member of the executive

committee of Pratt Institute in New York City. Previously he served as

a member of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design Alumni

Advisory Committee.

Albany is grateful to have had the opportunity to work with both Bob

Siegel and the late Charles Gwathmey. Albany represents their only

collaboration in the Caribbean.

Richard Meier received his architectural training at Cornell University and established his own office in New

York in 1963. Since that time, his firm has been awarded major commissions in the United States and Europe,

including courthouses, city halls, museums, corporate headquarters, housing and private residences.

Some of his best-known projects include The Getty Center in Los Angeles, the High Museum in Atlanta,

the Frankfurt Museum for Decorative Arts in Germany, the Canal Plus Television Headquarters in Paris, the

Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, The Hartford Seminary in Connecticut and the Atheneum in New

Harmony, Indiana.

Meier has been honored with numerous awards for his landmark buildings in the United States and abroad.

He was elected Fellow to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and became the youngest recipient

of the Pritzker Prize for Architecture, considered the field’s highest honor. He also received the AIA Gold

Medal, the highest award from the American Institute of Architects. The Royal Institute of British Architects

awarded Meier a Royal Gold Medal, and the Japanese Government recognized his lifetime achievement in the

arts with the Praemium Imperiale. Meier’s numerous design awards include 29 National AIA Honor Awards

and 53 Regional AIA Design Awards

Meier has taught at Cooper Union, Princeton University, Pratt Institute, Harvard University, Yale University

and UCLA, has given numerous lectures throughout the world and participated in many juries. He has

authored and been the subject of many books, monographs and innumerable newspaper and magazine

articles.

In addition to being on the board of directors for the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and the

American Academy in Rome, Meier is also a Fellow of the French and Belgian Academies d’Architecture, and

a member of the Bund Deutscher Architekten and the American Academy of Arts & Letters.

After serving for two years as the town architect of Seaside, Florida, Scott Merrill opened a

practice in Vero Beach, Florida in order to work on the new Windsor development. He attended

the University of Virginia and Yale University where he received a master of architecture in 1984.

He is registered in Florida, Virginia and Massachusetts.

George Pastor joined the firm in 1991. He became an associate in 1996 and a partner the following

year. He attended the University of Miami, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture in

1989. At the University of Virginia, he received his master of architecture in 1991. He is registered

in Florida.

David Colgan joined the firm in 1994. In 1999, he became a partner and moved to oversee a

new office in Atlanta. He received his bachelor of architecture from Notre Dame in 1994 and is

registered in Florida, Idaho and Georgia.

The firm has designed a range of buildings, including a federal courthouse, a town hall, two

churches, a fitness center, a clock tower, two post offices, a motor court, several apartment

buildings, two groups of rowhouses, an equestrian center, a small office building, rental cottages

and a sales office. In addition, the firm has completed several dozen custom houses.

The firm has won three national AIA design awards and 12 Florida AIA design awards. Its work

has been published in numerous books, catalogues and magazines in Europe and the United States

and has been exhibited here and abroad. Merrill has lectured throughout the United States on the

firm’s work and served on school and professional design juries.

This property is divided by the wings of the house into four quad-

rants, each a garden or courtyard. The simple geometry of the plan

belies a rich and subtle experience of movement. The pleasure of the

house derives from how you are conducted from one quadrant to

another through openings in every wing, by how the rooms of the

house address the gardens, and by how the gardens enhance the views

from the inside of the house. The house sits high and these gardens

are often the foreground for great, long offsite views to water on both

sides of the island.

The drive approaches the main wing of the house obliquely. The pub-

lic rooms in this wing divide the entry court from the pool garden.

The living room, study and dining room are located in series under a

big, open, barn like ceiling. Bedrooms are located principally in a

courtyard in the northeast quadrant, and staff and service spaces are

in an outlying building at the end of the entry court, connected to the

main house by an atrium. A tower, visible from most everywhere, and

affording views of the whole island, stands where the four quadrants

intersect. The atrium and bedroom courtyard are quiet and simple

spaces. The pool garden by contrast is elaborately terraced, orchestrat-

ing a steady fall, with the contours of the lot, to the water.

Island House III

This house sits above the road on the spine of a small ridge. It has views

both north and south to the water. The house is sited and organized to

take advantage of all views, and the fall of the site. The south, east and

north elevations especially, show the wings of the house cut against the

fall of the lot, and approaches from the south and the north show the

house perched on a prominence at the top of terraces. The main water

views are to the north, where the privacy is greater. Consequently the prin-

cipal public rooms and the main public terrace face in that direction, with

carefully screened views over the road to the water south of the house.

Servicing of the house is from the wooded west side, where views are not

as good.

The drive brings guests and family into an entry courtyard next to a mon-

umental porch off the living room. The living room has the privileged

spot on the plan, centrally located with views north south and east. It is

one of four buildings that pinwheel around a cloistered lawn, but it also

organizes the public north terrace. The dining room is next to the living

room, looking north and east. The kitchen and services trail behind to the

south and west, screened from the cloistered lawn. The master bedroom

has privacy and remove, and great views in all directions. Guest bedrooms

are generally wrapped around the south side of the lawn, looking south

and steping down the south side of the spine, falling slightly to the east.

Geoffrey Mouen earned a master of architecture degree in 1989 from the Savannah College of Art and Design

in Savannah, Georgia. He graduated cum laude and won the “Outstanding Achievement in Architecture”

award in 1988 and served as founding president of Savannah’s chapter of AIAS.

Mouen has more than 15 years of professional design experience in architecture and town planning, including

his role as town architect for Celebration, Florida. He was responsible for the architecture and planning

much of that community and also for administering the Celebration Community Pattern Book. Mouen has

also worked at the firm of Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York City and has lectured on architecture,

planning and sustainable communities at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Plattsburgh State

University and for community groups nationwide. Mouen has also participated in many TND planning

charrettes, including Meriam Park, Celebration and Baldwin Park. He is the architecture and urban design

consultant to the town of Jupiter, Florida and collaborated on the planning of Baldwin Park, Florida where he

has detailed the Baldwin Park Pattern Book in addition to designing the community centers.

Roney J. Mateu established Mateu Architecture Incorporated after serving as president and director of design

for 13 years at Mateu Carreno Rizo & Partners, Mateu’s first architectural practice. With offices in Palmetto

Bay, Florida, Mateu Architecture Incorporated is a full-service architecture firm that designs commercial

buildings, schools, churches, government buildings and private residences.

Mateu, who has consistently been recognized for being on the cutting edge of the design process, has

collected 48 design awards from the American Institute of Architects during the past 28 years, the most

awarded to any individual in Florida during that period. His work has been published in numerous

newspapers, magazines and books throughout the world.

Mateu became the youngest recipient of the Award of Honor for Design, the highest design recognition given

for a body of work over a period of time by the Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects.

He was the first recipient of the Silver Medal for Design, the highest Award given by the Miami Chapter

of the AIA. Mateu was inducted into the Miami Chapter of the AIA Hall of Fame for his contributions to

design. The Florida Association of American Institute of Architects bestowed Mateu Architects with the

2000 Millennium Award of Honor for Design, Twentieth Century Decade.

Although the majority of Mateu’s projects during the last 28 years have been in Florida, his experience

includes projects in Georgia, North Carolina, the Caribbean and Central America.

Mateu has served in numerous positions with the Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects,

including president in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew.

A native Floridian who resides in Sarasota, Florida, Guy Peterson is president and principal architect of Guy

Peterson/Office for Architecture, Inc. Since the inception of his practice in 1980, Peterson has earned more

than 50 design awards and special recognitions for his work.

Peterson received his Bachelor of Design degree with honors from the University of Florida in 1976 and

earned his Master of Arts in Architecture degree with high honors from the University of Florida Graduate

Design Program in 1978.

He became one of the youngest architects in Florida to win the Award of Honor for Design from the Florida

Association of the American Institute of Architects and became the only architect from Florida to be elected

into the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Peterson was also honored

with the Distinguished Architecture Alumnus Award from the University of Florida School of Architecture.

Peterson, who belongs to a number of professional and community organizations, is an active member of the

University of Florida School of Architecture Professional Advisory Committee and serves as a trustee for

the Florida Foundation for Architecture. He was also a trustee for Sarasota’s Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

where he served on the facilities, nominating and capital campaign committees.

Carl Abbott opened his architectural firm in Sarasota, Florida more than 35 years ago. For the past three

decades, Carl Abbott Architecture has become one of the most celebrated firms in Florida.

Abbott earned his undergraduate degree, cum laude, from the University of Florida and his

master’s degree from Yale’s School of Architecture, where he studied under Paul Rudolph and Louis Kahn.

Specializing in the creation of functional, creative buildings where nature and natural light are dominant

factors, Carl Abbott Architecture has earned numerous design awards for public and private projects.

Abbott was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and honored by the University of Florida

as a Distinguished Architectural Alumnus. The Florida/Caribbean AIA awarded Abbott a Medal of Honor for

Design and awarded his firm the AIA Firm Honor Award, the most prestigious honor given to an architectural

office. A book on the firm’s work is in progress.

Abbott has worked in Hawaii, New York with I.M. Pei and London with Yale classmates Lord Richard Rogers

and Lord Norman Foster. He has taught and lectured at universities in the United States and Europe and

recently taught a design studio in Architecture and Planning at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard.

Eric Watson, a native of upstate New York, completed his undergraduate architectural training at the

University of North Carolina at Charlotte earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1984. He received a master

of architecture degree from the Yale School of Architecture in 1988 where he was introduced to the new

urbanism movement in a 1987 design studio taught by Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk.

Watson began his professional career in New York City designing traditional residential projects in the office

of Johnson and Wanzenberg. To combine his interest in traditional architecture and New Urbanism, Watson

interned in the office of Scott Merrill and was involved with the design of many of the first houses in Windsor,

a resort village designed by Duany Plater-Zyberk in Indian River County, Florida. In 1992, Watson established

his professional practice in Seaside, Florida and three years later relocated his practice to Tampa, Florida.

Over a 15-year period, Watson has designed more than 80 homes and buildings in Florida’s New Urbanist

resort towns of Seaside, Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach, WaterColor, and WaterSound. He is a frequent

participant of DPZ and New Urban Guild design charrettes.

Watson has been published in books, magazines, newspapers, journals and has lectured on his work. He is a

2004 Palladio Award recipient and is a two-time recipient of the Southern Home Award from the editors of

Southern Living magazine.

Watson is a member of the Institute of Classical Architecture, Congress for The New Urbanism, American

Institute of Architects, the New Urban Guild, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and

is a registered architect in Florida, New York and Texas.

A graduate of Auburn University’s School of Architecture, Gary Justiss worked for two established firms in

Birmingham, Alabama before launching his one-man firm, Gary Justiss Architect in 1993.

Justiss has designed more than 100 custom homes, as well as numerous commercial, recreational and civic

buildings. He lives and works with his wife and four children in Chelsea, Alabama. The vast majority of

his work is in New Urbanist communities, including Mt Laurel, Seaside, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach,

WaterColor, Blount Springs and Hampstead.

He served as an architectural consultant for numerous charrettes for Duany & Plater-Zyberk & Company,

the Architectural Charrette Team, the New Urban Guild and the Congress for the New Urbanism. These

include projects in Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Panama, Costa Rica and Ecuador. He

is also a founding member of the New Urban Guild and a member of the Seaside Institute and the Institute of

Classical Architecture. Justiss is registered to practice architecture in Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia

and Mississippi.

Douglas Patrick Luke is a Caribbean architect, partner and principle designer at Gillespie & Steel

Architecture in Barbados. The experience gained working extensively in the Caribbean and North America

has provided a comprehensive background from which he draws on for design solutions. He is focused

on providing authentically Caribbean lifestyles with a contemporary sensibility. Luke’s projects include

designs for the town pool facilities and various residences at Rosemary Beach and Draper Lake in the

Florida Panhandle; The Marina Village at Marigot Bay, St. Lucia; The Raffles Golf Villas at Canaoun in the

Grenadines; and a range of villas in the Southern Caribbean.
