I tend to be an extrovert, but I can be kind of shy when I’m around someone new. Once I’m in a familiar environment, who knows what may happen! “I wish I was more fearless. Right now,” Scott says, “I’m kind of trying to study Josh (Martin) and Megan (Latch- ford), who are really good at praying out loud in groups. I just really struggle and feel uncomfortable with that. What he likesScott is a big afficionado of food—all kinds. “Food is justamazing in itself,” he says. “I love seafood, Chinese, Italian, bacon cheeseburgers … and the amazing Sweet OnionChicken Teriyaki sub from Subway!” Scott’s favorite smellrelates to food—the smell of chocolate in Hershey, or apizza place.

“I like all kinds of music. I have a pretty eclectic collectionof music, from all different genres,” Scott says. “I’ve beengetting into a lot of the Christian music scene, but stillenjoy a lot of the mainstream stuff. I’d say my favoritesinger of all time is Phil Collins. As for movies—a bigrange … but I’m definitely an action/comedy-type guy—not a big fan of thriller/gore. And my two favorite sportsright now are tennis and volleyball.”

He’s grounded …Scott credits his mom for her steady, strong character. “Mymom has always been the example when it came to beinga strong person, going out and doing whatever needs tobe done to provide and support for her family,” Scott says.“She would delay herself gratification and always put herkids before her. I respect her a lot for that and know thatnow that I’m older, I can make sure she is taken care ofand gets those things that she didn’t allow herself to haveyears ago.”

but ready to flyLooking ahead, Scott has some far-reaching plans, andtravel figures in there somewhere. “Europe is definitely onthe list of places to visit. I’d also like to travel around theworld, trying different foods and seeing different sites.”For something a little closer to home, Scott would like totry.sky diving. “That would be pretty cool,” he says.

While I enjoy going tomovies I considermyself a bit of a movie

critic. Oftentimes, because of mypersonality, I pick movies apartand think about the message theyare trying to send. Recentlymovies have become so pre-dictable and have lacked real cre-

ativity. A few weeks ago I reluctantly went to see the movieKnowing. I had been told the movie was about aliens andwas not that good. The alien part didn’t bother me—I kindof enjoy alien movies, but was afraid it would prove to besomewhat corny like the latest Indiana Jones movie.

When I saw this movie, however, I did not have the sameresponse as others who had shared their thoughts withme. When the movie was over I heard the lady in front ofme say to her husband and child that she was now afraidto go to church. Then Jen looked at Andy and me andsaid, “Why do I get the feeling we should go to a dinerand talk about this movie for a few hours?”

My immediate thought was, “How could someone watchthis movie and not notice the overwhelming Biblical paral-lelism in this movie?”

This movie was not accurate Biblically; however, therewere so many similarities and parallels to the Bible thatyou could not have missed it if you had read the Bible. I

ParallelsPastor Mike Jarrell

promised a few of my close friends that I would write ablog post with a brief review of the movie.

The movie begins with the professor (Nicholas Cage) stat-ing that everything happens by random chance and thatthere is no order or design to anything. He says that it’s alljust an accident and there is no purpose. Later we seeCage in a room with his son, who is watching film with hismother on it. His mother has died. The father/professorand his son have a conversation about life after death. It ismade evident that the father does not believe in heavenand it is implied that he is an atheist. The father apparentlydoes not have a relationship with his dad, who is a pastor.

When the movie ends, the professor believes in a purposeand thinks he is a prophet. He also reconnects with his dad.

I began to think about all of the “end of the world” filmsor alien movies over the past 15 to 20 years. It is interest-ing to me that before 15 to 20 years ago you didn’t hear awhole lot about end times or aliens, but suddenly it’s allover Hollywood. Could it be that Satan is using Hollywoodto get people used to the end times and the alien connec-tion? Could it be that when the rapture occurs and allkinds of people disappear off the planet that the immediateresponse will be “Aliens did it”? It may sound strange, butafter tons of people disappear off the face of the planet itwon’t seem too far-fetched.

(Go to Pastor Mike’s blog on the church Web site for theentire article/review.)

You will never be happy with what you want if you arenot happy with what you have.

Life shouldn’t be a journey to the grave with theintention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-pre-served body, but rather, to skid in broadside, thor-oughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly shouting,“Wow! What a ride! Thank You, Lord!”

Sometimes decisions that parents make can totally rock your world. It’s hard to talk about it or

even come up with anything to say. It’s impor-tant to know that you’re not alone.

Who are we? A group of teenagers and some youth lead-ers that have one thing in common—we’ve all dealt withdivorce and separation in our families. We know the feel-ings of confusion and hurt.

What is “Dealing with Divorce?” We get together twice amonth (1st and 3rd Sundays from 3–5pm) to share, tovent, to encourage, and to let go. We talk and we listen. Welaugh and we cry. You don’t have to walk this road alone.

In May we’ll meet on the 3rd from 3–5pm at Megan’shouse. No meeting on the 17th. Check the Web site fordirections (cornerstone-efca.com. Click on Youth thenDealing with Divorce.)
