2009-2010 Fact BookOffice of Institutional Research
The University of Northern Iowa offers a world-class university education,
providing personalized experiences and creating a lifetime of opportunities.
Message from President Benjamin J. Allen
I’m delighted to present you with the University of Northern Iowa’s (UNI) 2009-2010 Fact Book. These facts and statistics about the university community and academic programs illustrate our dedication to providing a premier undergraduate liberal arts education.
While the series of statewide budget cuts to the regent universities have produced a particular toll on the university community, they also present us with opportunities to reflect and reaffirm our commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, sustainability and service to the state of Iowa. In fact, UNI has significant news to report for 2009. First, UNI was named to the Presidential Honor Roll for Community Service in February 2009, the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Second, the Chronicle of Higher Education’s survey found UNI to be one of the “Great Colleges to Work For, 2009” in the large-sized universities category among institutions with enrollment of 10,000 or more. Third, for the 13th consecutive year, UNI is ranked second in the “Best Midwest Universities—Master’s” category for public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2010 “America’s Best Colleges” guidebook.
More good news is the continued growth of enrollment at UNI with a total enrollment of 13,080, a new record high in six years. The fact that more students are choosing UNI, and that they are successful here, affirms the quality and relevance of our academic programs. Our minority student enrollment is up 11.6 percent over last year, illustrating our commitment to creating an inclusive environment.
In presenting this fact book, I can say that I’m proud of the progress UNI has made under such economic conditions and the recognition it has received for its high-quality education.
Sincerely,
Benjamin J. AllenPresident, University of Northern Iowa
