Sliced bread. The wheel.

Whatever you compare sixth-year Cal State Dominguez Hills men's bas-ketball coach Damaine Powell to, there'sno denying that he has been the bestthing for the program in recent years sinceeither society-altering invention.

In his five years at the helm ofthe men's basketball program, CoachPowell has taken the Toros from the

California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doormat when he official-ly took over on August 19, 2004, to a share of the 2008-09 CCAA regularseason title with a program-tying 22 wins, which included an NCAA WestRegion 1st-round win, and pushing top-seeded and No. 3-ranked BYU-Hawai'i to the brink in a competitive second-round defeat.

One year earlier, the Toros finished third, and within just two gamesof qualifying for the Division II version of March Madness after earning aNo. 5 seed in the CCAA Tournament, where the Toros advanced to the semi-finals.

Powell, who enters the 2009-10 campaign with a 69-70 record in hisfirst five years in Cardinal & Gold, intends on carrying last year's momen-tum over to this season … and then some.

“CSUDH should be a basketball power,” Powell states, “and I am goingto make sure I do everything I can to make it that.”

With his no nonsense approach to the game, Powell prides himself onhis strong work ethic, and demands that his players follow suit. He refus-es to concern himself with how his players performed in last night's game, but focuses on how hard they compete in the ensuing practice, an effortthat ultimately will decide who sees the most floor time on game day.

Equipped with an insatiable appetite for detail, Powell preaches a rep-etition of fundamentals, especially on defense and on the boards, practicesthat are known for determining success or failure come crunch time.

And based on each of his teams improving its record from the previ-ous year, including the 2008-09 squad's 22-8 overall ledger that tied theprogram's history for most wins in a season, Powell's formula has paidnoticeable dividends thus far.

“The focus of all my teams is defense and rebounding, first and fore-most,” Powell preaches. “Defense and rebounds are the way to champi-onships.”

Now entering his sixth season at the helm of the CSUDH men's bas-ketball ship, the 37-year old and new father continues to draw from over adecade of head coaching experience, not counting the three years on themen's basketball staff at the University of Southern California, wherePowell played collegiately from 1992-94.

Always the learner, Powell travels to different top-notch coaches todraw their wisdom and incorporate what he learns into his own ever-evolv-ing philosophy.

“I go to coaches all over the country to learn and soak in as muchknowledge as I can,” Powell says as a matter of fact. “I've visited with TimFloyd, Lute Olsen, George Raveling,” he continues, as he rattles off the topcoaches past and present, “Rudy Washington and Tom Izzo, and takeeverything I learn from them and put them into my personality and teach-ing style.”

During his first year as head coach of Compton College, the then-24year old Powell was believed to be the youngest coach ever to win a statetitle after the Tartars captured the Championship with a 27-3 record.Powell then led the program to a second title in 2003 after Compton defeat-ed American River JC and finished 17-8 on the year, sending Powell off witha Championship in his final season at the junior college level. Enjoyingunparalleled success at that level where he compiled an overall 152-60record in seven seasons as a junior college head coach, Powell led histeams to the state playoffs every season, including a semifinal berth in1998-99.

Prior to Compton College, Powell served on the men's basketball staffat USC from 1995-97 under former Trojan head coaches Charles Parker andHenry Bibby, where he helped the Trojans to a 39-47 overall record, includ-ing a 17-11 mark in 1996-97 when USC dropped a 90-77 decision to Illinoisin the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

As a player under legendary former USC head coach George Raveling,Powell enjoyed two winning seasons from 1992-93 to 1993-94, when theTrojans qualified for back-to-back NIT berths. As a senior co-captain in hisfinal regular season game, Powell connected for the game-winning basketwith 2.6 seconds left to propel USC to a 69-68 victory at Oregon State, sending them to the NIT Tournament. During his career, he averaged 2.2points, 1.0 rebound and 1.6 assists per game.

“Damaine worked as hard as anybody and was a great person to haveon our club,” says Raveling. "I always felt that one day he would be an out-standing coach, and he proved that at Compton College. I fully expect him

to bring success to CalState Dominguez Hills.”

Prior to his twoplaying years at USC,Powell was named theSouth Coach ConferencePlayer of the Year atLong Beach CityCollege, averaging 9.8points, 6.4 assists and2.5 steals per game dur-ing the 1991-92 seasonas he led the Vikings toa 31-6 record and asemifinal appearance inthe junior college statetournament. As a fresh-man one year earlier, he averaged 4.7 points, 3.9 assists and 2.2 steals forLBCC, which finished 32-5 and made the state championship game.

Powell is no stranger to the Carson campus. A native of the localcommunity who prepped at Long Beach St. Anthony's High School, he grewup in the Torodome shooting hoops and attending legendary and formerCSUDH head coach Dave Yanai's basketball camps.

“I just try to bring in good people because good people find a way tobe successful,” Powell concludes. “We try to create a family atmosphere onmy teams, and hopefully produce a good kid that's passionate about aca-demics and basketball, and who will help us win at the same time.”

Powell received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Historyfrom USC.

The 2008-09 campaign was a sea-son of firsts for Cal State DominguezHills men’s basketball coach DamainePowell and his Toros.

Not only did CSUDH earn a shareof the CCAA regular season crown forthe first time since 1986-87, the Torosalso played their way into an NCAAplayoff berth for the firsttime since 1988-89, takinga first round contestagainst 5th-seeded CentralWashington before givingtop-seeded and No. 3nationally ranked BYU-Hawai’i everything theywanted in a second roundcontest before the hostskept the lead for good withjust five minutes left in reg-ulation.

In 08-09, coach Powellhad a five-headed monsterof then-seniors MichaelHernandez, Jerrell Smith,Rodney Yearby, JonathanToliver and Ryan Walton athis disposal, using their tal-ent and buy-in to lead theexperienced squad to“March Madness,” a tournament thatpointed out an obvious, yet crucial fact.

“Last year taught me how manygood players we need,” reflectedPowell, on his team’s first foray into theNCAA postseason in two decades.“You have to have an older, experi-enced team with talent, and when youget to the NCAAs, it’s all about talent.

“If you don’t have the talent, you’renot even in the game,” Powell contin-ues. “We were lucky last year in thatthe team wanted to win. It wasn’t aboutindividuals. It was a bunch of seniorswho did whatever they had to do to win.It really opened the coaching up andallowed us to get the most from them, and that was the difference.”

This year’s team, however, fea-tures just four returners from last year’ssquad, but two who have a combinedseven years of experience under thebelts after redshirt seasons, and fromwhom Powell will need leadership, leadership, and more leadership.

“It’s early, and we almost have tostart all over again,” begins Powell, looking at a roster filled with 12 new

players. “But I like the character of thisteam and its work ethic, and at somepoint this year we will be a good team.I don’t know when, but at some point,we will be a good team.”

Here’s a look at who will be leadingthis year’s Toro squad:

RETURNERS

Just four Toros return for a second-consecutive run at the CCAA Title andNCAA postseason, who are expectedto lead, produce and execute.

Guard Jamel Ward begins his fifthyear in Cardinal & Gold as the seniorstatesman of the squad, after using aredshirt season in 05-06. Last year, theLos Angeles native started 16 of 28games played, tallying five games indouble figures, with a season-best 17points at Humboldt State in lateFebruary. Ward also grabbed at least5 assists in seven games, with a sea-son-best effort of 7 coming at CS SanBernardino, while leading the team insteals and blocks twice, and in scoring, rebounds and assists once.

“Jamel is a solid guy, and I expecthim to be a leader this year,” beginsPowell. “He already leads with his workethic and play, so I’m looking for him tohelp the new guys transition and learnour system.”

High-flying senior Tim McGrathset the Torodome on fire last year withhis innate athletic ability and shootingtouch, two qualities Powell will need forhis team to succeed this year. McGrathstarted 24 of 30 games played in firstyear in Carson and scored in double-figures twice, including a season-high

18 points on 6-of-7 shoot-ing from 3-point rangeagainst Cal Poly Pomonain early December. TheWestchester native alsopulled down at least 5boards in nine games, including year-best 8against Fort Lewis in lateNovember, leading theToros in blocks six times, inrebounds four times, insteals twice and in scoringand assists once.

“We hope that Timsteps up to the next level,”says coach Powell. “Hehas all the talent andpotential to do that. Thekey is whether he can pullit all together and be con-sistent with it.”

Junior James Cawthorne beginshis fourth season in Carson after beinggranted a medical redshirt his freshmanyear. Improving in nearly all categoriesfrom 07-08, Cawthorne led the Toros inrebounds and blocks twice, and in scor-ing and steals once. The Orange nativetallied five games with at least 10points, including a 20-point outburst on8-of-15 shooting from the floor atCSUMB in mid-February which includ-ed 4-for-8 from 3-point land.

“We hope we can get a little moreproduction out of James without any bigmen returning,” says Powell. “We thinkhe can be an All-CCAA guy, and weneed him to play like one if we want tobe a good team. He can shoot andscore, and has a high IQ, but he has tostay healthy and get better.”

Sophomore Robert Willhite start-ed nine of 30 games as a redshirt fresh-man last year, scoring in double-figures5 times, including a season-high 14points against SSU in late January on6-of-7 shooting from the floor. Hegrabbed a season-best 7 board twice, and led the team in assists three times,

CSUDH’s lone four returners (clockwise from top left: Jamel Ward,Robert Willhite, James Cawthorne, Tim McGrath) have big shoes

to fill if the Toros hope to make a run at another CCAA title and NCAA postseason appearance this year.

in steals and blocks twice, and in scor-ing once.

A cerebral player, Powell expectsand needs Willhite’s learning curve toincrease exponentially this year ifCSUDH again will make a run at theleague title. “We forget that Rob is real-ly young because he has a lot of talentand is very smart,” he begins. “But ifour team is going to be good, Rob hasto be an all-league kind of guy for us. Ifnot, we’re going to struggle.”

NEWCOMERS

With 11 new faces in Cardinal &Gold this year, coach Powell knows amajority of them have to contribute to fillthe void left by last year’s senior class. With two University transfers and anumber of junior college transfers, thesixth-year head coach already haspicked out a few he thinks can make adifference.

"Tim McLaurin, from ChadronState, has to be a big-time contributorfor us to be successful,” begins Powell.“He is a really good player and we knowwe have a talent in him, but we’re stilltrying to figure out how to use him best.”

At Chadron State, McLaurinearned 1st-team Rocky MountainAthletic Conference All-East Divisionhonors, a Daktronics 2nd-team All-Central Region nod, and a 1st-team All-Nebraska D-II accolade as a sopho-more, while averaging 17.9 points, 5.6boards, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals in twoyears as an Eagle. The Comptonnative recorded just the second triple-double in CSC history in a gameagainst Augustana (SD), tallying 23points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists(Nov 15, 2008), with his 492 pointsscored in 2008 placing him 21st inschool history for most points in a sea-son, following the best scoring seasonever at Chadron State as a freshman(458 pts).

“Danny Benson, a 6’2 guard fromFlorida who was named ‘Mr. Pensacola’as a prep, is another player we expectto give us heavy contributions,” Powellcontinues. “He has a lot of talent butneeds to learn our system and imple-ment and fuse his talent to fit into howwe do things.”

Of his bigger guards, Powell pointsout junior Stephen Faulkner and truefreshman Wesley White as two whoneed to contribute early and often.

Faulkner was named a 2nd-teamAll-league player at Allen Hancock JC

after lettering in three sports in highschool, while White was named a 1st-team All-League and 2nd-team All-CIFselection as a prep, leading InglewoodHS to a runner-up division finish afterleading the league in rebounding andblocked shots.

The “X” factor on the team may be6’6 forward Zareh Zargaryan, who cansee action in positions 1-4, a trait hedemonstrated in CSUDH’s last exhibi-

tion game against Biola. “I think Zarehis going to be a good player for us,”says Powell. “He has a lot to learn, buthe’s talented, and once he gets towhere we want him to be, we have tolearn how to use him best in our sys-tem. But he does have talent.”

PROGNOSIS

Guard play, especially at the “2”position, is the team’s biggest strengthat the moment, exemplified by CSUDHtaking a 35-26 halftime lead over USC

at the Galen Center in the second ofthree pre-season exhibition contests forthe Toros as its shooters drained agood percentage of shots before goingcold from behind the arc after the break.

Conversely, the center and pointguard positions are the thinnest, but willbe bolstered in January when playersget cleared eligibility wise, including 7-foot transfer Amir Aguilar, who aver-aged over 6 boards and nearly 4 pointsat Division I Colorado State during the2007-08 season, and set the schoolrecord for points, rebounds and blockedshots at Marshall HS, where heprepped.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Although just four Toros return tothis year’s squad, coach Powell is con-fident that the 2009-10 can achievesuccess. The only question is when.

“We were encouraged that we candefend once we follow our principlesand play at a certain standards, and wewere encouraged that we got a bunchof open shots,” Powell reflects on theexhibitions, specifically after the contestat his alma mater. “I also liked the factthat we competed and actually out-played them.

"We can improve on our blockingout, our offensive execution, defensiveexecution … There’s a lot to improveupon. We just have to play a littletougher and smarter.”

Looking forward to how the CCAAConference will pan out after the Toroswere chosen to finish 4th amongst apre-season poll of head coaches,Powell is satisfied with that predictionheading into the tomorrow’s seasonopener.

“It’s hard to project because wehave so many new guys and a newteam, but I’m hoping to finish in the top4 somewhere, and hopefully make arun to the CCAA Tournament and gofrom there.

“But so much depends on if we canstay healthy, if the players want to win,or if that’s their first priority, or whetherit’s to score 20,” Powell concludes.

“Last year’s team was really talent-ed, and we had guys who were experi-enced as well. We were also very luckyto get out without any significantinjuries. I’m still learning the team, butas long as we are healthy, we’ll be fine.”

President García addressed her constituents for thefirst time on August 20, 2007, at the Fall Convocation.Following are a few excerpts from her speech:

“Many of our students come for a better career and abetter quality of life. We are the ones who help them open theirimaginations and see the wonders of learning and form a lovefor learning and education.

“Here was a diamond in southern Los Angeles, aninstitution serving the students that I have committed my life to.This is a community that provides excellent academic pro-grams and good customer service to every student who enters, with a strong faculty who understand our student body. Thisinstitution gets it.

“We are a community where everybody knows thatno matter where you work, you are an educator. Yes, the fac-ulty is the heart of an institution and students learn mainly inthe classroom. But all the research I have read indicates thateducation occurs inside and outside the classroom.

“We will succeed and continue to succeed because ofpeople like you, committed to all students regardless of theirstanding in life. Together, we will take Dominguez Hills to newheights and I will serve you as a president who will work along-side of you and give you nothing less than my all.

“I thank you on behalf of the students at DominguezHills, our communities and those we will serve in the future.”

The California Collegiate Athletic Association

The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences sinceits establishment in December 1938.
