Dawn Simmons
Head Coach
One of the most prolific all-around
athletes in the history of Lynchburg
College women’s athletics, Dawn Sim-
mons completed her 12th season as the
Hornets’ skipper in 2010, posting more
than 30 wins in seven of the last eight years.
The 2009 season was another fantastic one for LC as the Hornets posted a
record of 38-8-1, just one win shy of their record setting total of last sea-
son. They also won their third straight ODAC Championship and advanced
to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
In 2008 the Hornets went 39-8 - the best season in school history. LC won
the ODAC regular-season and tournament tiles and advance to the NCAA
Division III Tournament for the second-straight year. LC won the Fayette-
ville Regional and advanced to the finals for the first time in program his-
tory. In 2007 LC won the ODAC Tournament and advanced into the NCAA
Tournament for the first time in program history. The Hornets won three
games in regional competition and finished the year 36-13.
Simmons’ 2006 team finished 30-15 - and led the Hornets in 2005 to a
31-9 record. LC tied for first place in the conference, and she was named
the ODAC Coach of the Year for the third-straight season.
During her tenure, the Gretna, VA, native has led the Hornets to an overall
record of 282-135-1, including a 121-35 mark in the ODAC. In addition,
Simmons has guided the LC women to 10-straight appearances to the
ODAC Tournament.
Simmons graduated from Lynchburg in 1997 with her bachelor’s degree in
health, movement science and recreation.
2010 Season in Review The 2010 Lynchburg College Softball team finished the season with an overall record of 24-17, including an impressive 12-6 record in ODAC play, while hitting .304 as a squad. Close play all through-out the season led to a three-way tie for first place in the ODAC standings to-wards the end of the season. Lynchburg entered the ODAC tournament fourth after a complex series of tiebreakers. Senior Lauren Duguay was named ODAC player of the year, as well as ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She led the Hornets with a .422 batting average and 36 RBI, while accruing on-base and slug-ging percentages of .500 and .633, respectively. She hammered seven
home runs, and displayed speed on the base path, going 10-10 on base stealing tries. Lauren was even tougher on ODAC competition, bat-ting .520 with six taters and 21 RBI. Duguay and her fellow seniors have combined for a 137-46-1 record (74%). Senior third basemen Rachel Gallagher led the ODAC in walks drawn with 21, complimenting a .454 slugging percentage, 21 runs

Since the softball team’s inaugural season in 1987, it has seen a tre-
mendous amount of progress. The team finished with a 10-13 record in its
first year, but it improved to 17-8 in 1990 to finish atop the ODAC standings
in the first season of ODAC play.
In 1993, the program advanced to the championship game for the
first time then won the title for three-straight years from 1994-1996. Since
2005, LC has made every single ODAC title game, finishing runner up twice
while taking home the championship the last three seasons. Lynchburg has
finished in the top four of the ODAC every single season and has finished
atop the conference standings eight times.
The team has only had three coaches in its 23-year history. Aubrey R.
Moon, Jr. coached the squad in the beginning, leading the team to three
ODAC titles while earning four ODAC Coach of
the Year honors. Dawn Simmons took the helm
of the program in 1999 and has taken the team
to new heights, winning 30 or more games
for seven straight seasons in addition to three
ODAC titles, three NCAA Tournament appear-
ances, and a berth in the NCAA Finals in 2008.
scored, four homers and 23 RBI. Senior Kelly Self also contributed as a solid defensive sub, com-mitting only one error in 97 total chances for a .990 fielding percentage. Several other Hornet players had fantas-tic seasons and earned recognition for their ef-forts. Junior pitcher Katie Bruce and sophomore shortstop Taylor Walker both joined Duguay on the All-ODAC First Team. Bruce boasted 15 wins in 146.2 innings pitched, a 2.67 ERA and 95 strikeouts. At the dish, she hit .323 with 34 runs scored, six homers, 29 RBI, and a slugging percentage of .543. Walker turned in a superb sophomore campaign, hitting .346 with nine
extra base hits and 24 RBI. She touted on base and slugging percentages of .427 and .495, respectively. Walker’s fellow classmates Sarah Smith and Meagan Fredenberg garnished second-team All-ODAC and honorable mention All-ODAC honors, respectively. Smith finished the season hitting at a .311 clip and reaching base nearly 40% of the time. Fredenburg hit .264 with eight extra base hits and 18 RBI. She also posted a solid defensive season as the Hornets primary catcher, committing only two errors in 153 total chances. Freshman Jenny Carroll had a fantastic rookie year for the Hornets, hitting .360 with 10 extra base hits, 16 runs scored, and 26 RBI. Junior Caitlin Dolby helped to anchor a Hornet staff that boasted a 3.25 ERA. Dolby collected eight wins in 72.2 innings pitched, a 3.28 ERA and 50 punch-outs.
