Lynn University’s athletic department continued on its tradition of reaching the postseason in 2009-10 but was unable to add to its national championship hardware. Seven of the Fighting Knights 11 programs reached the NCAA Tournament, including the women’s basketball team who in the process won its first Sun-shine State Conference crown and became the last of Lynn’s program’s to reach the tournament. Two squads advanced to the national stage as women’s golf concluded as national semifinalists and the men’s golf team finished ninth overall. Within the Sunshine State Conference, the Blue & White were one of three teams to qualify for every confer-ence tournament, marking the third consecutive year LU has accomplished this feat. In addition, Lynn posted 38 All-SSC accolades with two student-athletes earning Freshman of the Year recognition and another garnering Defensive Player of the Year honors. This Annual Report will delve deeper into all of the successes of Lynn’s athletic program’s both in the Sun-shine State Conference and within NCAA Division II play. Here is a quick look into Lynn’s triumphs this past season: The Men’s athletic programs finished tied for 4th in the SSC Mayor’s Cup, a standing determined by com-

petitive achievement of all nine conference institutions. The women’s program’s finished 8th overall The Baseball program saw 2009 NCAA Division II College World Series hero Tommy Kahnle drafted in

the fifth round of the Major League Baseball Amatuer Draft by the New York Yankees, becoming the highest drafted player in program history

Continued our partnership with Stretch Internet to provide radio and video coverage of our programs. We increased our video broadcast to include all regular season SSC men’s and women’s soccer games in addition to the conference volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball slate

The Athletic Department captured the NCAA Division II Community Engagement Award of Excellence for the Sunshine State Conference

Year One initiatives for the Athletic Department Strategic Plan were implemented, including: Visibility of our Mission/Vision , increased graduation , academic success and retention rates, department cohesive-ness, conducted funding benchmark analysis, evening Blue & White days and Athletic Alumni Education

Lynn University's athletic department and student-athletes were on hand at the annual Student-Athlete Banquet as four former athletes were enshrined in the Athletic Hall of Fame. The two most represented programs, men's and women's soccer, got a little stronger with the installment of Gareth Dunn and Joyce Parson-Roth while the baseball program upped its total with the inclusion of Donnie Bivens. The biggest addition came with the wel-coming of Aimee Murch as the first softball Hall of Famer in school history.

Lynn University’s student-athletes took advantage of numerous opportunities to grow as individuals off the field of play this past year. As the Fighting Knights’ CHAMPS/Life Skills Program continued to develop in its fourth year, student-athletes had the resources to take courses in personal development, career development, leadership and community awareness. In these workshop-based classes, the stu-dents learned how to be successful during their careers at Lynn University, in the community and in pursuing a career outside of athlet-ics. Upperclassmen also had the opportunity of becoming Student-Athlete Mentors through the CHAMPS programming and co-teach work-shops for the student-athletes in the one-credit courses. During the 2009-10 academic year, seniors Daniel Rouah (baseball) and Chris Goldan (men’s golf) and junior Sam Craven (men’s soccer) served as mentors, teaching sections of the Personal Development course in time management, conflict management, leadership and commitment. The volleyball team won the first-ever Knights Cup and $1,000 to use towards any program enhancements. Student-athletes competed on behalf of their teams and earned points in the following categories that align with the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program: Academic Ex-cellence, Athletic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development, and Community Service. The Knights Cup competi-tion encourages the achievement of academic excellence, promotes personalized choices for supplementing the student-athlete's educa-tional background, provides opportunities for personal development, involves the student-athlete as a role-model/leader, and supports the team concept and encourages student-athletes to support fellow student-athletes. Serving the South Florida area in many different capacities, Lynn’s student-athletes participated in 1,618 hours of community ser-vice. They strengthened relationships with the YMCA, Stratford Court Retirement Home, Community Blood Center of South Florida, and Habitat for Humanity, while continuing to help other established organizations. (See chart) The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee continued to join forces with the Any Solder Inc. campaign to collect and send items to United States Military personnel deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan for the second straight year. US Army, Marine, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force members post “wish lists” on the AnySoldier.com website and SAAC chose Florida-based troops once a month to send items to. In total, student-athletes sent 4,122 items to 10 different troops at war. SAAC’s two year total of items shipped has now been raised to 8,214. For the student-athletes efforts, Lynn will be awarded the Collection Donation Award sponsored by the Sunshine State Confer-ence Lynn completed its third trip in as many years to the Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee, Fla., to volunteer with 102 other Sun-shine State Conference student-athletes and administrators. The Fighting Knights sent a group of 16 volunteers to assist in the Village’s daily activities of hosting Make-A-Wish and Dream Factory children with life threatening diseases and their families. Building upon a relationship that started by hosted a single BINGO Night three years ago, SAAC continued to visit Stratford Court Re-tirement Home on numerous occasions. The Fighting Knights hosted BINGO at least once a month and organized the 2nd Annual “Winter Wonderland Senior Prom” for the residents. The “Senior Prom” served as the marquee event as over 250 senior citizens at-tended the themed event in December. On campus, SAAC set out on a new initiative that helped student-athletes because more involved with the athletics administration. At the committee’s monthly meetings, the group selected head coaches and administrators to join them as part of the agenda’s “Coaches and Administrators Corner.” The group’s leaders took all their concerns and suggestions to an end-of-the-year meeting with Lynn Univer-sity’s President Kevin Ross in hopes of making positive changes on campus. Head coaches Scott McMillin (men’s basketball), Rudy Garbalosa (baseball), Mandy Harris (softball), Mike Perez (men’s and women’s tennis), and Lynze Roos (volleyball) all met with SAAC during the 2009-10 academic year, as well as administrators Jeff Schaly (Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance), Jon Roos (Athletics Marketing Coordinator), Matt Roos (Director of Alumni Affairs), Kristen Moraz (Athletic Director), Michael Duck (Head Athletic Trainer), and Chad Beattie (Sports Information Director).

Our women’s basketball team enjoyed supreme success in 2009-10. The Knights closed out the sea-son 19-11 overall, winning the most games since 1995-96 while tying the school record for con-secutive winning seasons with four. Lynn also claimed the program’s first ever Sunshine State Con-ference Tournament title and NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. The Blue & White shocked the Sunshine State Conference by becoming just the second No. 5 seed to win the confer-ence tournament. LU hadn't won a tournament game in their program history but used solid de-fense and timely shooting to defeat the fourth seed Florida Southern, No. 1 seed Tampa and No. 3 seed Barry in the finals. Chelsea Patterson was selected as the Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Quanisha Dixon. Kira Harvey became the first women’s basketball player to garner SSC Freshman of the Year recog-nition and was joined on the All-Freshman team by Amanda Schultz. Patterson was honored as a Second Team All-SSC member also.

A year after claiming the program’s first national championship the baseball team went out in hopes of repeating. Although that goal fell short, the Fighting Knights still had many areas to be proud of. Patrick Roedel tied the school record for consecutive games with a hit by getting a base knock in 23 straight contests. Major League Baseball, though, took a liking to the Blue & White as the New York Yankees drafted pitcher Tommy Kahnle in the fifth round (175th over-all) of the amateur draft. Senior catcher Kyle Hollo-way signed with the Tampa Bay Rays after going un-drafted.
