WELCOME TO KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITYWelcome to Kansas Wesleyan University. For nearly125 years, Kansas Wesleyan has provided its students with a faith-based, values-centered education in the arts, sciences, and professional studies areas characterized by excellence within a caring community.

Affi liated with the United Methodist Church, we off er over 30 undergraduate programs at the associate and baccalaureate levels, several special programs for adults who wish to fi nish their education, and the MBA degree. We are located in Salina, the crossroads of Kansas, so our students are in an ideal location for internships, student teaching placements, volunteer activities, and off -campus jobs. There is also easy access to shopping, restaurants, theatres, parks, museums, and cultural arts events.

The intercollegiate athletics program is an important part of the life of many Kansas Wesleyan students. We are proud members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program. Our teams compete through the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), and that competition demands both focus and commitment. The lessons our students learn through their participation in our athletic programs help develop those skills that will be needed throughout life: goal setting, commitment to excellence, teamwork, and communication. We have made a strong commitment to having the programs, services, and facilities needed to support a strong athletic program.

In addition to our athletic program, our students can choose from a full range of student activities that appeal to a wide variety of interests. Just a few examples of student activities include vocal and instrumental music groups, theatre, studio arts, debate and forensics, yearbook, newspaper, student government, ministry and fellowship groups, intramurals, and numerous other special interest organizations. I am impressed by the number of our athletes who become actively involved in many of these other opportunities on campus.

At Kansas Wesleyan University, you can make a diff erence, and you can achieve things far beyond what you may have imagined possible. I invite you to take the time to walk around our beautiful campus and sense the excitement of Kansas Wesleyan University.

WELCOME TO TODAY’S GAME FROM MATT WILLIAMS, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETIC PROGRAMS

Welcome to Kansas Wesleyan University, the home of the Coyotes. As I embark on my fi fth year as Director of Athletic Programs, KWU continues its commitment to excellence, providing outstanding opportunities for student-athletes to excel not

only in athletics, but also in the classroom. KWU’s commitment to give students the tools they need to succeed is evident all over campus.

Our athletics programs continue to be a dominant force in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. Kansas Wesleyan won seven KCAC Championships in 2008-09,

and for a third straight year had the best conference and overall combined records in the eight major sports sponsored by the conference (Football, Volleyball, Men’s

and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball and Softball). Wesleyan won 86 conference games last season and 145 overall. Women’s Soccer made its second straight appearance in the NAIA National Tournament, the Women’s Basketball team made history for the program, winning its fi rst conference

title since 1988 and its fi rst ever KCAC Tournament title. The Coyotes then earned a best ever No.9 ranking in the fi nal NAIA Top 25 poll and received a No.2 seed in its section of the NAIA National Championship bracket. Kaylaen Dittmer was named the KCAC Player of the Year, and Coach Gordon Reimer earned KCAC Coach of the Year honors and also went on to earn Kansas Women’s College Coach of the Year honors from the Kansas Basketball Coaches’ Association. The KWU Baseball team made school history as well, winning its second straight Regular Season title and a second KCAC Tournament title in the last three years and advancing to the Championship Series of the Opening Round of the NAIA World Series. Coach Dave Dawson was named KCAC Coach of the Year for the third time in his four seasons leading KWU Baseball, Brandon Mathes was named KCAC Player of the Year for a second straight year and Mike Pettibone earned the Rawlings NAIA National Gold Glove at Third Base.

This year we celebrate winning our 25th Championship since the start of the 2005-06 athletic season, and continue our emphasis on the “Three E’s,” where student-athletes are: EXPECTED to graduate from Kansas Wesleyan University, EXPECTED to strive just as hard in the classroom as on the athletic fi eld, and EXPECTED to have a winning season.

Our coaches have continued to recruit high quality student-athletes that excel not only on the athletic fi eld, but in the classroom as well. Last year, our Women’s Basketball team was named as a NAIA Scholar Team and KWU had 12 NAIA Scholar-Athletes in 2008-09.

The faculty, staff , and administration of Kansas Wesleyan University have all taken pride in what we have accomplished and will continue to take pride in the success we will have this year both on and off the athletic playing fi eld.

I hope you enjoy today’s contest and are impressed with our student athletes’ accomplishments both on and off the athletic fi eld.

As you look around here today and through this athletic program, I encourage you to please support all our local sponsors and thank them for supporting these young student athletes. These sponsors play a very important role in maintaining the success of the athletic programs here at Kansas Wesleyan University.

MUIR GYMNASIUM was the former home of Kansas Wesleyan Basketball and Volleyball. Opened in 1981, Muir was the last new facility to be constructed on the KWU Campus prior to the construction of the new Student Activities Center. Muir Gym features a capacity of nearly 800 and provided a high quality small college atmosphere for all athletic contests. Muir Gym is still being used as a practivce gym and host to community events.

GENE BISSELL FIELD AT MARTIN STADIUM will be the site of all JV Football games in 2009. Sacred Heart High School also plays its football games at Martin Stadium. The stadium complex, built in the early 1940s as a Public Works project, is the oldest athletic facility in use by the Coyotes today. Over the years, Martin Stadium has been the site of many classic Kansas Wesleyan football games, and it hosted the 2000 American Family Insurance Charity Bowl between the Coyotes and arch-rival Bethany College. The fi eld at Martin Stadium is named Bissell Field in honor of Gene Bissell. “Mr. Wesleyan” coached Coyote football for 26 years and served the athletic department in various capacities, including athletic director until his retirement in the early 1980s. Bissell is KWU’s all-time wins leader in football with 116 career victories.

The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, commonly called “The Kansas Conference,” is a prominent intercollegiate athletics conference comprised of ten outstanding independent or private institutions of higher education in the state.

The origins of the KCAC are traced to February 15, 1890, when the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Association became the result of the fi rst successful attempt at organization among Kansas colleges, “to promote and regulate amateur intercollegiate athletics.” At that time the association or conference included not only private universities and colleges but also Kansas Agriculture College (now KSU), Kansas University, and Washburn University. Football seems to have been the major sponsored sport, and Baker University won the championship for the fi rst three or four years.

In about 1902 this early association became allied with the Kansas College Athletic Conference, a group which was the fi rst to adopt a defi nite set of rules and regulations. It also promoted an annual track and fi eld meet which has continued yearly since, except for World War years. Basketball has been sponsored since 1904. Football was revived in 1907. Tennis began as early as 1912. Golf was added in 1923. By this time the name of the conference had been altered to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference; it had grown to 17 college members and two allied members: Baker, Bethany, Bethel, College of Emporia, Fairmount (now WSU), Friends, Kansas Wesleyan, KSTC of Emporia (now ESU), KSTC of Hays (now FHSU), KSTC of Pittsburg (now PSU), McPherson, Ottawa, St.Benedict’s (now Benedictine), St.Mary’s, Sterling (formerly Cooper), Southwestern, and Washburn, and with St.John’s and Kansas City University (Kansas) as allied members. Kansas University and Kansas Aggies had dropped out earlier to join other conferences. In 1923 the College of Emporia, KSTC of Emporia, KSTC of Hays, KSTC of Pittsburg, Wichita (formerly Fairmount), Southwestern, and Washburn withdrew to form the Central Conference.

The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the predecessor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928, and a new conference was formed which again was called the Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, Kansas Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St.Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswriters quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the “Little Six,” in contrast to the Big Six (which became Big Eight, now Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St.Mary’s College was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. Sterling and Southwestern were approved for membership in 1958. In 1968 Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to make twelve members in the conference, and the conference was organized into Southern and Northern divisions until 1970 — when Baker, College of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. In the mid-1970s the formal name was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975 women’s intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference membership to 10. In 1992 St.Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999, Saint Mary College (now University of Saint Mary) joined to return the KCAC membership to ten institutions.

The “Kansas Conference” (KCAC) continues to be an all-Kansas conference. The KCAC is an affi liated conference of the National Association of intercollegiate Athletics with headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.. THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS (NAIA)The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefi ts of membership in a national association.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA off ers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive diff erence in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, offi cial and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the fi ve core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

NAIA CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALLWOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Kansas Wesleyan Women’s Basketball team is in the hunt for a second straight KCAC Championship in 2009-10, but with the loss of four seniors, including two NAIA All-Americans, the Coyotes will have to rely on the leadership of the returning players to help the Coyotes be in the hunt for the title this season.

Wesleyan had a magical year in 2008-09, fi nishing the year with a 27-6 record and KWU’s fi rst KCAC Title since 1988. The Coyotes fi nished the year ranked No.9 in the NAIA, and advanced to the Second Round of the NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. Three players earned All-American honors, headlined by Second Team selection Kaylaen Dittmer, who also was named the KCAC Player of the Year. The Coyotes also virtually rewrote the record books, setting 19 new team and individual records. KWU Coach Gordon Reimer was named the KCAC Coach of the Year, and also earned the KBCA Women’s College Coach of the Year Award

“Those four seniors were special players. They were special to me, with a couple of them being here for four years and getting so much accomplished,” Reimer said. “Obviously you can’t replace them, so we had to go out and fi nd some players that could start for us right away and we felt like we got some of those kind of players.”

Among those players expected to compete right away for a spot in the lineup are junior college transfers Jamie Alexander (G, 5-8, Jr., Hill City, Kan. / Colby CC (Kan.)) and Damara Lewis (F, 5-10, Jr., Lyons, Kan. / Butler CC (Kan.)).

“Jamie is defi nitely the type of player we expected her to be,” Reimer said. “We shouldn’t miss a beat with her. Damara is a really athletic, undersized post player that can do a lot of diff erent things with the basketball off ensively, and she’s a good defender too.

Also expected to make an immediate impact will be freshman Stephanie Frost (F, 5-11, Fr., Assaria, Kan. / Southeast of Saline HS).

“Steph is probably the most athletic player we’ve ever had here during my tenure,” Reimer said. “She is a great rebounder and has a knack for getting the ball in the basket.”

The Coyotes didn’t have to look far to fi nd a couple other players that will be fi ghting for a spot in the starting rotation. Returner Shelby Babcock (G, 5-5, So., Ventura, Calif. / St. Bonaventure HS) looks to fi ll the void vacated by the loss of All-American Emily Luckeroth to graduation. Babcock got a lot of minutes last year as freshmen as one of the fi rst two off the bench, and really came on strong at the end of the year in 2008-09, something that Reimer feels will be benefi cial to both. Also Reimer points to outstanding off -seasons for both players that has elevated their game to a new level. Wesleyan does have to deal with the loss Jessica Potthoff (G, 5-7, Highlands Ranch, Colo. / Thunder Ridge HS) to a season-ending injury during one of the preseason scrimmages

“Shelby really worked hard over the summer and has brought her game to an all-new level,” Reimer said. “She can defi nitely fi t into that shooting role, and she can handle the ball too. I look for her to have a much stronger role this year.”

“Jessica had a great summer too,” Reimer said. “She worked on the things that we needed her to, and losing her for the year hurts our depth and experience, but I’m confi dent we will have players that can step in and fi ll the void.”

Also returning is All-American LaCole Wilkinson (G, 5-3, Jr., Stewartsville, Mo. / East Buchanan HS) at point guard. Wilkinson was named First Team All-KCAC last season, and also was named Honorable Mention All-American, averaging 12.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.

“LaCole is just on another page from everyone else,” Reimer said. “She could very easily be one of the best point guards in the KCAC this season.”

Wilkinson spent the summer honing her skills and correcting the little things to become better, something that Reimer pointed out.

“She spent the summer working on fi xing the things that were wrong the year before, and that has made her that much better,” he said, “I anticipate for her to score more this year, because she’s going to have to, whereas last year she didn’t have to score as much. She’s very capable of scoring a lot of points for us.”

Wesleyan’s roster won’t be without a Santee in 2009-10, as Montric Santee (G, 5-9, So., Little Elm, Texas / Northeastern Oklahoma State), the younger sister of graduated senior Khristy, comes to KWU after spending a year at Northeastern Oklahoma State University. Reimer likens the younger Santee to her older sister, but with a little more strength and power.

“Montric will defi nitely take care of that spot opened up by the loss of her sister to graduation,” he said. “She’s a little bit of a diff erent player than her sister, a little stronger and a little more powerful around the basket, and does a good job of fi nishing around the basket. She also has great three-point range.”

Reimer also expects some local products to fi t into the mix this season, including Chelsea Freed (G, 5-8, Fr., Scandia, Kan. / Pike Valley HS), Abby Sherbert (G, 5-6, Fr., Wakefi eld, Kan. / Wakefi eld HS) and Kaitlyn Bressie (G, 5-7, Fr., Galva, Kan. / Canton-Galva HS).

“Chelsea is a good three-point shooter and has good skills off the dribble,” Reimer said. “Abby has been a real surprise for us in the early going. She’s got a lot of skills and she can shoot the ball. We get her into the weight room a little and she can be a great player for us in the future.”

“Kaitlyn comes from a really good program and she is just very fundamentally sound, is a hard worker and does so many things right. She just is a great person to have on the team and a great person to coach.”

Wesleyan’s schedule is not the brutal test it was last season, but will still present a challenge early on. The Coyotes open on November 4 at Haskell, before facing three GPAC opponents in Dana (Nov. 10), Midland Lutheran (Nov. 13) and Dordt (Nov. 14). The home opener is November 17 against Baker University. The Coyotes then take on Johnson and Wales at home on November 20 before heading to Parkville, Mo., to take on the Park Pirates on November 21. An exhibition contest on November 24 at Newman is the fi nal tune-up before the Coyotes open KCAC play on December 3 at McPherson.

“We will get tested early again this year, which will be good for us to have a good idea where we are heading into conference play,” Reimer said. “The conference will be a challenge as it always is. Everyone lost key players from last year, and are in the same boat as us, having to fi ll those open spots.”

Ryan Showman has been an assistant coach in women’s basketball for Kansas Wesleyan since the start of the 2007-08 season.

Showman played basketball for former Wesleyan head coach Jerry Jones for three seasons, and was a three year letterwinner for the Coyotes.

“I am excited to have a chance to help Coach (Gordon) Reimer to continue the turn around of the women’s basketball program,” Showman said. “He has already made great strides, and I am excited to have opportunity to help the team continue its ascent to the top of the conference.”

Showman graduated in 2004 with a degree in HPER Education and taught at Schilling Elementary and was the assistant boys’ basketball coach at Sacred Heart High School the last three years. He graduated from Emporia State in December 2008 with a Master of Science Degree.

MEN’S BASKETBALLMEN’S BASKETBALL

Kansas Wesleyan Men’s Basketball opens the 2009-2010 season with hopes of carrying over the success the Coyotes saw in 2008-09, but will have to deal with the loss of six of the top 11 players from the team a year ago. However, it’s something that Coach Mike Davert, in his third season, and the rest of the coaching staff feels they have overcome with an equally talented group of newcomers ready to fi t into the mix.

Wesleyan lost six of its top 11 from a year ago, and approximately 60 percent of its off ensive output. Gone from last year are All-American Trey Sims, the versatile Eric Hammond, Romero Hood, Melvin Underwood and a pair of All-KCAC All-Freshman team members from a year ago in Dante Jordan and Brad Wespieser.

“Trey was an All-American and a two-time All-Conference player for us,” Davert said. “He will be tough to replace. Also Eric Hammond who just was very versatile for us, and Romero Hood, who we thought had another year on a redshirt, but we found out he didn’t over the summer. Melvin will be back in 2010-11 to fi nish up, and we lost two freshmen that had a lot of potential in Wespieser and Jordan that were named All-Freshman in the conference, and that’s tough too.

With all that being said, the Coyotes do return a strong nucleus of players that saw a large amount of playing time last year, including two full-time starters and a couple others who moved into starting spots at diff erent times of the year last year.

Among those returners is Willie McCarty (F, 6-2, Sr., Omaha, Neb. / Southeast CC (Neb.)), who will be in his third year in the program and has a chance to be a three-year starter. Also Matt Jarrett (F, 6-2, Sr., West Helena, Ark. / Arkansas Baptist) returns from a year ago, who played signifi cant minutes and played a key role for the Coyotes last year. Those four will be looked upon to be the leaders on and off the court for the Coyotes in 2009-10.

“Willie has a chance to be a three-year starter for us,” Davert said. “He is incredibly athletic and plays hard all the time, never takes a play off . Jarrett did a great job as an undersized post for us last year, but we should be able to move him back to his more natural position at the three or four this year.”

Also returning will be Rodney Brown (G, 5-10, Sr., Phoenix, Ariz. / Mesa CC (Ariz.)) and Matt Dickman (G, 6-0, Jr., Tucson, Ariz. / Central Arizona College), both of which came on strong at the end of last year. Brown was a part time starter on and off throughout the year, but really advanced his game near the end of the season, which carried off into the playoff s.

“We fi nally saw the real Matt Dickman at the end of the year last year,” Davert said. “He came into the season with a bad ankle injury and took a while to get going, and he never really fully recovered. He’s back at 100 percent this year. He’s quicker than last year, and a better player than last year. We are expecting those four to step up and be leaders for our team on and off the court, especially for the new guys, helping them to understand how we do things and how hard we have to work to achieve the goals we have set.”

Among the new guys will be some old guys, and some guys that are all too familiar with Salina, Coach Davert and Kansas Wesleyan. Mike Bartee (F, 6-5, Sr., Bronx, N.Y. / Chandler-Gilbert CC (Ariz.)) returns after missing last season, staying in Arizona to help out his family. Bartee played nine games for the Coyotes in 2007-08, and Davert is glad to have his presence back on the court.

“Having Mike around is a great addition for us,” he said. “He’s extremely athletic and plays hard all the time.”

The Coyotes also welcome a pair of newcomers to the mix in the post in Wes Jones (F, 6-5, Jr., Surprise, Ariz. / Phoenix College (Ariz.)) and Salina native Stephen Shaw (F, 6-5, Fr., Salina, Kan. / Salina Central HS).

“Jones has a chance to be a top player in the conference for us this year,” Davert said. “Stephen is a big body, 6-5, 245 pounds of pure muscle. He will be a very physical presence for us in the post. He will give us some great minutes in the post.”

Davert says the wing position will be the most athletic for the Coyotes in 2009-10. The Coyotes are athletic and versatile on the wing, with size and a great shooting range. Among the players at that position include Park University transfer Joe Harvey (G/F, 6-4, Sr., Wichita, Kan. / Park (Mo.)) and Mekan Moss (G/F, 6-5, Sr., Topeka, Kan. / Jamestown College (N.D.)), along with Pepe Araujo (G/F, 6-3, So., Ventura, Calif. / Ventura College (Calif.))and returners McCarty and Jarrett.

“Joe and Mekan are long athletic kids that can really defend, run the fl oor and crash the boards,” Davert said. “Araujo is a pure shooter with incredible range that will stretch the defenses. He will defi nitely fi ght for some time for us. Add McCarty and Jarrett into that mix and we are really deep at those positions.”

At the guard position, newcomers Bryson Flax (G, 5-11, Jr., Salina, Kan. / Brown Mackie College (Kan.)) and Tyler Antenen (G, 6-2, Jr., Salina, Kan. / Cloud County CC (Kan.)), both from Salina, will come in and pay immediate dividends, complimenting the play of returners Dickman and Brown. They will provide the Coyotes with additional shooters, and toughness and all around good play according to Davert.

“Those players will also give us depth that we really haven’t had at the shooting guard spot in the past,” Davert said.

Davert also said that freshman Trevor Kuhlman (G, 6-2, Fr., Belleville, Kan. / Republic County HS), has a chance to compete for some varsity time, but will defi nitely be an asset for the Coyotes as he works his way into the rotation.

The Coyotes’ schedule will be challenging as it was last year. The biggest thing will be the fact that the Coyotes play 12 of their fi rst 14 games on the road. Wesleyan kicks off the season on Halloween Weekend, in the York College Classic, followed by a November 4 trip to Lawrence to take on Haskell. Wesleyan doesn’t see the lights of Mabee Arena until game number seven, when the road warriors host Baker on November 17. Five more road games dot the schedule, including a November 24 trip to Washburn, and the December 3 KCAC opener at McPherson, precede the only other home game of the fall semester on December 5 against Saint Mary. The Coyotes open the second semester of play at home against Park on January 4, and then host conference rival Tabor on January 7.

“We feel like we have a schedule that is going to prepare us for conference play,” Davert said. “It’s a tough schedule and we are on the road quite a bit, which will help build our team chemistry and toughness.”
